‘Don’t recognise Arunachal’: China on Indian harassed in Shanghai; Cong urges Centre to reply strongly | India News

NEW DLEHI: China on Tuesday denied allegations that an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh was harassed or detained at Shanghai airport, insisting that its border checks were conducted strictly “in accordance with laws and regulations.” The statement came even as India lodged a strong diplomatic protest. The woman, Pema Wangjom Thongdok, a UK-based Indian passport holder, was travelling from London to Japan on November 21 when immigration officials reportedly flagged her passport as “invalid” because it listed Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace.

China Rejects Charge of Harassing Indian Woman in Shanghai, But Insists Claim Over Arunachal Pradesh

She later wrote on social media that she was held for around 18 hours, until officials at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened.Responding to PTI’s query on the incident, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the woman was not subjected to any coercive action.“During the entire time, China’s border inspection authorities carried out checks procedures in accordance with laws and regulations… no compulsory measures were taken on her, and there was no so-called ‘detaining’ or ‘harassing’,” Mao said, adding that the airline had provided “resting facilities and meals.”Mao also said Beijing’s position on the state, saying, “Zangnan is China’s territory, and China does not recognise the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”Citing sources agencies said, a demarche was issued to China in New Delhi and Beijing on the day of the incident, asserting that Arunachal Pradesh is an “indisputable” part of India and residents are entitled to travel on Indian passports. The Indian Consulate in Shanghai “extended the fullest assistance” to the passenger, officials added.Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu said he was “deeply shocked” and called the episode a “violation of international norms and an affront to the dignity of Indian citizens.”The Congress party, reacting sharply to Mao’s remarks, accused Beijing of making an “offensive” statement and urged the government to respond firmly. In a post on X, the party said China’s comments were “extremely objectionable” and “a blatant attack on India’s integrity,” adding that “India will not tolerate such low-level rhetoric.”(With inputs from agencies)

Mumbai: Vakola police rescue kidnapped girl and arrest five for selling her in Panvel | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Vakola police arrested five people, including a couple, for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old girl from Santacruz East and selling her in Panvel for Rs 1.80 lakh. The accused include the girl’s maternal uncle and aunt, as well as an auto-rickshaw driver and two others. On Saturday at 12.30 pm a woman approached the police claiming that her daughter had been kidnapped. “Since the offence involved a minor and was deemed serious and sensitive, seven teams worked over two consecutive days, analysing CCTV footage, conducting technical investigations and gathering confidential information to identify a suspicious auto-rickshaw and its driver,” said the police. The officer said it was learned that the auto-rickshaw operated out of Panvel. Eyewitnesses and CCTV recordings showed a couple travelling with the girl in the rickshaw between 2.00 and 3.00 am on Saturday. “We received information that a motorcyclist and two other suspects had been patrolling the area along with the couple who kidnapped the gir,” said an officer from Vakola police station.Without the vehicle number, investigators relied on the description of the auto-rickshaw. Using confidential leads, they arrested the rickshaw driver, Latif Abdul Majeed Sheikh (52) of Triptashila Chawl in Santacruz East, on Monday.Interrogation revealed that the kidnappers were the girl’s uncle, Lawrence Nickles Fernandes (42), and aunt, Mangal Dagdu Jadhav (38). They were traced and arrested at Vitthalwadi in Panvel. The pair had sold the girl to Karan Maruti Sanas for Rs 90,000.Following further technical investigation and information on Sanas, he was apprehended in Usrli Budruk, New Panvel, Raigad. He admitted selling the child to Vrinda Vinesh Chavan (60) and Anjali Ajit Korgaonkar (57) for Rs 1.80 lakh. During a search of Chavan’s residence in Panvel, police safely rescued the girl on Tuesday and returned her to her mother at Vakola station. The accused are identified as Latif Abdul Majeed Sheikh, Lawrence Nickles Fernandes, Mangal Dagdu Jadhav, Karan Maruti Sanas, Vrinda Vinesh Chavan and Anjali Ajit Korgaonkar.“We have arrested the accused and are trying to find out the motive behind the kidnapping and selling the girl,” said the officer.

Must remain proactive, ahead of curve & future-ready: Rajnath | India News

Must remain proactive, ahead of curve & future-ready: Rajnath

NEW DELHI: India must remain “proactive, ahead of the curve and future-ready” in the defence sector as it cannot adopt “a reactive approach” in today’s rapidly evolving world and constantly shifting geopolitical landscape, defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday. The minister, speaking at the Navy’s ‘Swavlamban 2025’ seminar, also asked Indian defence companies to move forward with a “profit-plus approach” to further reduce the country’s dependence on arms imports and strengthen indigenous manufacturing.

India Entering ‘Golden Era’ Of Defence Innovation And Self-Reliance: Rajnath Singh

“The common perception has often been that the private sector is profit-driven. There’s nothing wrong with that. But the profit-plus approach means that along with monetary profit, there should also be nationalism, a sense of duty, strategic responsibility, and the sentiment of doing something big for the country,” Singh said.

Bring back 6 Bangladesh deportees, probe citizenship: SC | India News

Bring back 6 Bangladesh deportees, probe citizenship: SC

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Tuesday suggested to the Centre that it bring back the pregnant Sunali Khatun, and five others, including her husband Danish Sekh and their minor son Sabir, who were deported to Bangladesh on grounds of being illegal immigrants, as an interim measure and inquire about their nationality on their return, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra. The court, however, called for tough measures against infiltrators.Appearing for the deportees, senior advocates Sanjay Hegde, Kapil Sibal and G Sankaranarayanan told a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi that Sunali, her husband and son have documents to prove citizenship and their deportation violated their fundamental rights. “They must be brought back as per Calcutta HC’s order,” they said.Hearing the Centre’s appeal against the HC order, the bench said, “Now that certain material, including landholding records and relatives’ statements, have come on record, why don’t you bring them back and inquire about their nationality? You hardly held any inquiry before deporting them.”Give deported people chance to prove their nationality: SCAs an interim measure, bring them back and hold an inquiry. Examine the documents produced by them or on their behalf and give them a chance to prove their nationality,” the bench said. However, it accepted that the removal of illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Indian soil is absolutely justified. The bench sought Centre’s response to its suggestion on Monday. In its appeal, Centre has challenged the Calcutta high court’s Sept 26 order quashing the detention order of June 24 and deportation order of June 26, and directing the home ministry to take all steps to bring back the six persons so deported within four weeks by working in coordination with high commission of India in Dhaka.Centre said that the six people in question had failed to produce any document to substantiate their claim of being Indian citizens or residing legally in India. After their deportation, a missing person/s complaint was filed with West Bengal police and the gram panchayat issued them domicile certificates. Thereafter, HCs of Delhi and Calcutta were petitioned simultaneously, with the petition before Delhi HC being withdrawn without disclosing that another is pending before Calcutta HC.It said the Delhi Police’s inquiry had established that the persons concerned were illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In fact, they themselves had admitted to the fact. The deportation orders were passed after following due procedure, Centre said. “Since India has open/porous land borders with many countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar, there is continuous threat of influx of illegal immigrants, and such influx has serious national security ramifications. There is an organised and well-orchestrated influx of illegal immigrants through various agents and touts for monetary considerations,” Centre argued.

Docs: Bad air may be delaying recovery from seasonal flu | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Doctors say high air pollution levels may be making recovery from seasonal flu more difficult this time, as particulate matter aggravates airways. Even people with no underlying condition have their illness prolonged because of airway hyperreactivity.Amid a surge in load at OPDs, many patients are either those with chronic respiratory illnesses or even healthy people living near construction sites, where dust levels are high. Some areas like Mazgaon crossed the 300 AQI mark on Nov 11 and then again on Monday. Pulmonologist Dr Abhijit Ahuja has seen the worst impact in patients with severe conditions such as interstitial lung disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease living near construction sites. Mulund resident Sippy Patwari has spent over Rs 1 lakh on dust control nets and air purifiers to protect her elderly parents. Her 75-year-old father has bronchial asthma and her 68-year-old mother has asthma and allergic rhinitis. The family has largely stopped stepping outdoors and Patwari often finds herself double-masking with N95s. “We didn’t even spend this much on protecting ourselves during the peak of Covid,” she says. Dr Chetan Jain, another pulmonologist, says even in healthy individuals, lung functioning tests show a reduction in capacity if there are frequent episodes of cough and breathlessness. “People need to start masking. We recommend minimising outdoor activities. There is very little else people can do.” Dr Anita Mathew, an internal medicine expert, says it is recommended that people have annual influenza jabs, especially if they have pre-existing conditions. “It prevents severity and is better than spending heavily on medical bills.” The doctors say another concern is that haphazard use of antibiotics is common this season. “Sometimes, symptoms are driven by dust exposure or viral infections and are not bacteria-led. So, antibiotics do not work. But because there is an overlap, people rely on a quick fix of tablets, which risks causing resistance,” says Dr Mathew.

‘This is what happens when you try to boss around’: Virat Kohli’s brother takes veiled jibe at Team India management? Deletes post later | Cricket News

'This is what happens when you try to boss around': Virat Kohli's brother takes veiled jibe at Team India management? Deletes post later
Pressure has been mounting on Gautam Gambhir after the Test side has been struggling in the Test series against South Africa. (PTI Photo/Swapan Mahapatra)

Virat Kohli’s elder brother, Vikas Kohli, stirred fresh conversation around India’s red-ball struggles with a sharp post on Threads, landing right in the middle of a tense fourth day of the Guwahati Test. As India chased an improbable 589 and slipped to 27 for 2 by stumps, his message added another layer to the ongoing scrutiny over the team’s choices and direction. In his post, Vikas suggested that the recent shift in approach had unsettled a system that once delivered results.

Look who is back! Virat Kohli arrives for the ODI series vs South Africa

Without naming anyone, he hinted at interference under the current setup. “There was a time that we played to win even in overseas conditions. Now we are playing to save the match.. even in India.. This is what happens when u try to boss around and change things unnecessary which were not broken,” he wrote.

The comment has been widely interpreted as a reference to head coach Gautam Gambhir’s leadership and India’s recent run of inconsistent performances. While the original post was shared widely as screengrabs on X, the post is no longer seen on his handle. On the field, the situation remained grim. South Africa, the defending WTC champions, declared at 260 for 5 earlier in the day, putting India under pressure with a target that had no real precedent in home conditions. India lost both openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul before settling at 27 for 2, leaving the middle order to hold off a spirited South African attack. This phase has come during a transformative period for Indian cricket. The team is still finding its way after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. With India now on the brink of defeat and South Africa dictating terms in Guwahati, the final day holds more uncertainty than optimism. Whether the team can steady themselves or slip further will shape not just the match, but the wider conversation that has only grown louder. Day 5 will also determine whether South Africa can bowl out the hosts to secure a clean sweep or whether India will hold on to salvage a draw.

‘Case pendency a sign of structural issues’: CJI Surya Kant | India News

'Case pendency a sign of structural issues': CJI Surya Kant

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice Surya Kant has said the growing backlog of cases – 5.4 crore in trial courts, high courts and Supreme Court put together – is a manifestation of deeper structural bottlenecks in the system. The CJI declined to elaborate on his efforts to ensure adequate representation of women and regional representation among SC judges as well as the issue of selective implementation of collegium recommendations for appointments and transfers by the government. “I am working on these issues,” he said. After taking oath as CJI on Monday, Justice Kant told TOI, “A scientific and comprehensive approach is essential to address the challenge of pendency across all tiers of the judiciary.” As of Tuesday, 4.8 crore cases were pending in trial courts, 63.8 lakh in high courts, and more than 90,000 in SC.Batting for a healthy three-tier judiciary that expeditiously addresses citizen’s grievances, the CJI said, “Our judicial system operates as an integrated whole, with each tier serving a crucial purpose. The effectiveness of our democracy depends on the robust functioning of all three levels of the judiciary.”Attributing pendency mainly to acute infrastructural deficiencies, the CJI said, “A coordinated effort by government and the judiciary is needed. What is urgently required to be done are – timely identification of land and resources for courts, equipping them with essential facilities and expeditious completion of judicial infrastructural projects,” he said, adding that the emphasis on mediation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms is expected to lessen the burden on courts in the future.Asked about the growing sense of disappointment among HC judges because of the ‘big brother’ approach of SC on the judicial side, the CJI said, “The relationship between HCs and SC is one of constitutional complementarity, not competition. Both institutions serve distinct yet harmonious roles within our federal democracy.”He said the HC’s power under Article 225 (jurisdiction of HCs) is in many aspects broader than SC’s power under Article 32 (right to constitutional remedies). And, in many instances, SC has asked litigants to first approach HCs for ventilating their grievances, the CJI said. “The real strength of HCs lies in their proximity to the people. They engage directly with regional realities and local challenges,” he said.“A vast majority of constitutional matters – right to protection, administrative oversight, executive accountability – continues to be addressed by HCs. This is where I believe the Constitution truly lives in daily practice,” the CJI said, adding that SC’s visibility in certain matters of national importance does not alter this constitutional architecture.

In a 1st, EV registrations across segments cross 2 million in 2025

CHENNAI: This calendar year has turned out to be an impressive one for battery-powered electric vehicles in the country. For the first time, total EV registrations across all segments have crossed the milestone of 2 million units – and the year is still not over, with more than a month to go. The surge highlights rising consumer interest, better product availability and continued policy support for EV adoption. As of Tuesday, for this calendar year, EV registrations (excluding hybrids) stood at 2.02 million units as against 1.95 million units in 2024.Despite EV policy changes, demand has remained strong, driven by falling battery costs, a gradually expanding charging network, and new longer-range models. As sales of electric vehicles (EV) gain momentum, the growth is mainly powered by electric two-wheelers. According to Vahan data, electric two-wheeler segment continues to be the major driver of total EV registrations, accounting for 57% of the total volumes during this calendar year.“We expect mid-teen growth in 2025, softer than last year’s 27% surge but still healthy, supported by firm two-wheeler demand, steady three-wheeler fleet electrification and a competitive four-wheeler launch pipeline, indicating a sustainable growth cycle,” said Poonam Upadhyay, director, Crisil Ratings. It is gathered that magnet shortages are manageable for now, with softer battery costs and rising localisation helping cushion the impact. The launch of higher-range, faster-charging models is also supporting demand.Total electric two-wheeler sales have grown to 1.2 million units year-to-date, slightly higher than the full-year number of 1.15 million achieved in 2024. “Established OEMs have driven electric two-wheeler growth this year, leveraging extensive dealer networks, competitive pricing, and higher-range models to expand customer base and boost retail confidence despite policy changes,” Upadhyay added.Among all categories, the electric passenger vehicle segment which include electric cars and SUVs) recorded a growth of 57% at 156,455 units year-to-date, compared with 99,429 units in 2024.Electric cars and SUVs are gaining traction, driven by a wider range of mid-range models and improved total cost of ownership. “While charging infrastructure remains a consideration for long-distance travel, it’s no longer a major concern for urban buyers who can rely on home and workplace charging. Expanding networks and increasing ranges are easing earlier infrastructure concerns,” she said.Electric three-wheeler sales stood at 6.9 lakh units year-to-date as against 6.91 lakh units in 2024.
