Mumbai: Bhandup Residents’ Agitation Leads to Restoration of Cancelled BEST Bus Routes, Increased Services | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A citizens’ agitation in Bhandup recently resulted in the BEST administration restoring bus routes that were scrapped or short-terminated and also increasing the number of buses operating in the area. Supported by the local Shiv Sena and a few activists, citizen protesters forced BEST to resume discontinued services after passengers faced higher fares when forced to travel by autorickshaws, said regular commuter and bus fan Yash Mhadgut.“The buses were deployed on the Bhandup routes, and the administration reinstated 605 and 606 to their original courses after being short-terminated, while services on 608 also returned to normal,” said another bus fan, Shubham Padave.Advocate Karan Shinde, a local commuter, said scrapping and short-terminating bus services impacted 20,000 to 30,000 commuters who rely on the service to connect with local train timings. He said the decision not only inconvenienced passengers but also increased passenger load on remaining services and pushed commuters towards more expensive and unreliable modes like autos and Uber/Ola. He welcomed BEST’s decision to restore all services.Rajool Patil, a political and social activist who was part of the protesters near Bhandup railway station recently, said, “The agitation was supported by the local Shiv Sena and a few activists. BEST administration has not just bowed to citizens’ demand and resumed services, but also increased the number of buses for better frequency. It will benefit scores of residents in the area who depend largely on public transport buses.Suresh Nandire from Bhandup said that there were initially two types of buses for the hilly narrow tracts of Bhandup West. “They introduced six-metre-long and nine-metre-long buses. Since the latter had problems in taking a turn at a few locations and there was traffic congestion and delays, the six-metre buses were taken off completely. Now only 9-metre Midi buses are plying.”A BEST official said, “Small buses have their advantages in some pockets of the city where it is not easy for the 12-metre-long bus to operate.” Small buses can navigate through narrower, more congested residential streets, providing crucial connectivity to many Bhandup neighbourhoods that might not be accessible to larger buses. Bhandup has several homes along the hilly areas, and there are lanes and bylanes which can be accessed either by share autos (which are also popular here) or the small buses.Yogesh Mhatre from Bhandup West said, “There is a huge demand for the buses. Many senior citizens and school students depend on these buses, while office-goers also stand in long queues outside railway stations during peak hours to catch these popular buses in Bhandup.”Mhadgut recalled that citizens were left fuming when the bus services were short-terminated or scrapped on November 1. “For example, the Bhandup station to Tembipada bus, which got short-terminated, upset many passengers. Another two routes were Hanuman Nagar to Bhandup and Kanjurmarg stations. I am happy that Bhandupkars have got their demands fulfilled and the services have been restored back to normal.”

Big blow to BJP as 6 Ulhasnagar netas join Shinde Sena & Kalani party | Thane News

ULHASNAGAR: Shock overshadowed celebrations in BJP’s Ulhasnagar unit over the party’s stunning victory in the Bihar assembly elections after six of its former corporators, including three who were regarded as its strongest faces in the city, quit and joined Shiv Sena and its local ally, Team Omie Kalani (TOK), on Friday. The defections ahead of civic polls are being viewed as one of the biggest blows to BJP in Kalyan Lok Sabha region. They are also being described as a turning point for the Kalani family, whose influence in Ulhasnagar politics had weakened two months ago after five of its former corporators crossed over to BJP.

‘Bengal Is Far-Fetched…’ Bengal Minister Shashi Panja Hits Back at PM Modi’s Jungle Raj Jibe

Among the six leaders who switched sides, Kishor Vanvari and Meena Sonde joined Sena, while Jamnu Puraswani, Prakash Makhija, Mahesh Sukhramani and Charlie Parwani joined TOK in the presence of MP Shrinkant Shinde and TOK president Omie Kalani. Three were BJP’s towering figures—Puruswani is a five-time corporator and former deputy mayor, Makhija is a four-time civic standing committee chairman, and Sukhramani held the rank of minister of state in Maharashtra Sahitya Academy.According to insiders, the fragile peace between the Mahayuti allies in the region became more frayed after Ravindra Chavan became the state BJP chief this year. His push to strengthen his party in the Kalyan LS constituency, the Shindes’ stronghold, resulted in many Sena functionaries joining BJP. In response, Shrikant poached BJP functionaries for Sena and TOK.Makhija said senior BJP and Sena leaders are working against each other, which prompted him to quit.Sources said if senior leaders do not intervene in this rivalry between BJP and Sena, it could spill over to other belts.

Ganesh naik hints at contesting Thane municipal elections solo against alliance decision | Thane News

THANE: Cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Ganesh Naik on Thursday hinted that he may contest the upcoming Thane municipal elections alone, going against the decision of the state’s Mahayuti leadership to fight the polls as an alliance against the MVA–MNS combine. Naik, who was in Thane to attend a function, said he did not want grassroots BJP workers to get a raw deal.“Our state leadership wants the polls to be fought as an alliance… The situation today is conducive (to fight solo) as the country is making progress under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and CM Devendra Fadnavis… We may be allies, but as the senior leader and in-charge of Thane, I know the sentiments of our grassroots workers (to fight solo) and don’t want to do injustice to them. I will convey this to our top brass,” he told the media. The local BJP unit has long aspired to reclaim Thane city and other local bodies, which were once its strongholds but were later handed over to the Shiv Sena during their alliance decades ago. The Sena, under the leadership of the late Anand Dighe and later deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, steadily consolidated its dominance in the region, pushing the BJP to the margins.Observers note that contesting the Thane polls as an alliance would reduce the number of seats available to BJP aspirants, as the Shinde-led Sena held a clear majority in the 2017 elections. With nearly 90 former elected representatives — including those inducted from other parties over the past two years — the Sena is now in a strong position to demand a larger share of seats in any alliance arrangement.

Maharashtra introduces hi-tech measures to reduce leopard attacks in Pune and Ahilyanagar | Thane News

THANE: Forest Minister Ganesh Naik said the state has taken cognisance of the frequent leopard attacks in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts and is taking corrective steps by introducing a hi-tech mechanism to avoid man-animal conflicts in the region.“We are wary of the rising leopard population in Pune and the surrounding region. The big cats seem to have assumed that the abundant sugarcane farms are part of their habitat. Presently, there are roughly 1,000 or more leopards in Junnar alone. We are seeking approval from the centre to instantly shoot big cats that attack humans,” said Naik.

Naik added that the state is introducing initiatives to reduce man-animal conflicts in the region. “We have allocated Rs 11 crore for replicating the Chandrapur model of using an AI-based early warning system that will minimise instances of man-animal conflict. The system tracks leopard movements and alerts villagers in advance.”The minister, who visited families of the victims of leopard attacks, said he felt ashamed after seeing the tears in the eyes of the relatives. “No amount of compensation can bring back the lost lives. We are considering sterilisation of the big cats, else very soon we may see leopards strolling around in villages just like stray dogs,” he said while addressing the media in Pune on Wednesday.

Maharashtra polls: Ahead of Ulhasnagar civic elections, Kalani’s TOK faces setback as two-time corporator joins BJP | Thane News

Ahead of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation elections, the Kalani family’s TOK party suffered a setback as two-time corporator Rekha Thakur joined the BJP

ULHASNAGAR: Ahead of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation elections, the city’s once-powerful Kalani family has suffered a significant political setback. The family’s political outfit, TOK (Team Omie Kalani), faced a blow after two-time corporator Rekha Thakur resigned from the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).Thakur joined the BJP in the presence of State BJP President Ravindra Chavan, MLA Kumar Ailani, and BJP Ulhasnagar District President Rajesh Vadhrya. Known for her strong grassroots connect and active involvement in education and environmental causes, Thakur was considered one of the staunch supporters of the Kalani family. Her switch is being seen as a major loss for TOK and a strategic gain for the BJP ahead of the civic polls.BJP MLA Kumar Ailani said, “Thakur had won the previous election as a BJP candidate but later left the party to join Team Omie Kalani. However, she has now made a ‘ghar wapasi’ by returning to the BJP.”Thakur’s defection follows the exit of around five other corporators from the Kalani camp, who have also joined the BJP. In response, TOK has inducted some BJP functionaries into its fold.Political observers believe that ever since Pappu Kalani stepped back from active politics and handed over the reins to his son Omie Kalani, the family’s influence in Ulhasnagar has gradually weakened — a shift that the BJP appears to be capitalising on effectively.
