India-US trade deal: Piyush Goyal shares update; ‘every country has to…’

India-US trade deal: Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has said that India is not disappointed over delays in the India–US trade agreement as every country will prioritise its interests. Goyal said that India remains focused on safeguarding its interests. “Not at all. Every country looks after its own interests. We have to protect ours,” he told TOI in an interview, adding that “negotiations continue in a friendly manner.” These comments come after Economic Survey 2026 suggested that India and the United States might reach a trade deal conclusion this year. “Ongoing trade negotiations with the United States are expected to conclude during the year, which could help reduce uncertainty on the external front,” the Survey stated.

‘Did Not Discuss It At Any Point’: Piyush Goyal On US President Trump As India-EU FTA “Unifier”

The minister’s comments come days after India inked ‘mother of all deals’ with the EU and pursues multiple free trade agreements (FTAs) across regions, including New Zealand, Chile and other nations. Goyal said that India remains open to negotiating with economies that believe in fair trade, do not hurt India’s interests and respect its sensitivities.India and the US have been engaged in trade negotiations since March 2025. Since August last year, Indian goods have been subjected to a 50% tariff from America, one of the highest among countries. These tariffs consist of 25% reciprocal tariffs and 25% of additional tariffs, which the Trump administration alleged was due to India’s continuous purchase of Russian crude.Meanwhile, speaking about the remaining trade deadlocks between the two nations, Goyal told Hindustan Times, “India and the US can now look at moving towards a closure of their bilateral trade negotiations since no ‘sticky issues’ are left to be resolved.” Describing the proposed agreement as a “a positive, good deal,” he added, “we are actively engaged. We never do any deal with a deadline in mind; when both sides are satisfied, the date will be announced. I don’t think there are any sticky issues left to be resolved. We can now look at moving towards closure.”

India to buy oil from Venezuela instead of Russia? US pitch to counter 25% tariffs

India to buy oil from Venezuela instead of Russia? US pitch to counter 25% tariffs

The United States has told India it can soon resume purchases of Venezuelan oil to reduce its reliance on Russian crude, Reuters reported. The move is part of a broader US effort to redirect India’s oil imports away from Russia while reshaping energy ties between the two countries. According to sources quoted by Reuters, India is now on track to cut Russian crude imports by several hundred thousand barrels per day in the coming months. The US decision to pitch Venezualan oil to India comes amid broader diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Caracas. Venezuela interim president Delcy Rodríguez on Friday said she had agreed with India on energy cooperation during a telephone call with PM Modi, a day after Venezuela opened its hydrocarbons sector to private companies. PM Modi also in a post on X said they “agreed to further deepen and expand our bilateral partnership in all areas, with a shared vision of taking India‑Venezuela relations to new heights in the years ahead.”Venezuela, which sits on the world’s largest proven oil reserves, recently reformed laws to open the sector to private investment, a major shift from decades of state control designed to attract foreign capital and revive its battered oil industry.

US sanctions and Venezuelan oil

President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs in March 2025 on countries buying Venezuelan oil, including India, as his administration intensified its campaign against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. US forces captured Maduro on January 3, after which Washington began directing the Caracas government and announced plans to control Venezuela’s oil industry indefinitely.

India’s declining Russian oil imports

India became a major buyer of Russian oil after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered Western sanctions that pushed prices lower. However, growing US pressure and rising trade costs have driven India to diversify its crude supply. Oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri said last week that India is expanding its sources as Russian imports decline. Two sources said India is preparing to reduce Russian oil imports to below one million barrels per day soon. Imports were around 1.2 million bpd in January and are expected to fall to about 1 million bpd in February and around 800,000 bpd in March, one source said. Another source said imports could eventually decline to about 500,000–600,000 bpd, helping India clinch a trade deal with the United States.US tariffs on Indian goods reached 50% in August after Washington added an extra 25% levy over purchases of Russian oil. Operational challenges created by Western sanctions have also prompted Indian refiners to increase imports from other suppliers.Trade data showed India’s Russian oil imports fell to their lowest level in two years in December, lifting OPEC’s share of Indian imports to an 11-month high. Refiners have stepped up purchases from Middle Eastern, African and South American producers to offset reduced Russian supplies.Several refiners have already cut ties with Russian crude. State-run Hindustan Petroleum and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, along with private refiner HPCL-Mittal Energy, have stopped buying Russian oil. Other state refiners, including Indian Oil Corp and Bharat Petroleum Corp, have slowed purchases, officials said at the India Energy Week conference this week. A private operator of the world’s largest refining complex plans to buy up to 150,000 bpd of Russian oil from February, a company source said. The effort to supply Venezuelan crude to India also aligns with Washington’s goal of cutting Russian oil revenues that are funding the war in Ukraine. Reuters sources did not say whether the Venezuelan oil would be sold through trading houses such as Vitol or Trafigura or directly by Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA.

Trump administration to add roughly 65,000 H-2B guest worker visas this year

Trump administration to add roughly 65,000 H-2B guest worker visas this year

President Donald Trump’s administration will add some 65,000 H-2B seasonal guest worker visas through September 30, a Federal Register notice said, stating the visas would be available to employers at risk of severe financial hardship due to a lack of US labour, Reuters reported. The move roughly doubled the 66,000 visas available each year to businesses such as construction, hospitality, landscaping and seafood processing, in a recognition that US employers in those industries could be struggling to find workers.A temporary rule making the additional H-2B visas available will be formally published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, the notice said.Trump, a Republican, launched a wide-ranging immigration crackdown after returning to the White House in 2025, portraying immigrants without legal status as criminals and a drain on their communities. His administration also clamped down on forms of legal immigration, with broad travel bans and reviews of refugee and asylum cases. The number of available visas also was expanded under former President Joe Biden, a Democrat, and Trump during periods of his 2017-2021 presidency.Employers in the seasonal businesses, including hotels, clamoured for more visas. Some construction businesses complained of a lack of workers during Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown.Groups that favour lower levels of immigration opposed the visas, saying they undercut wages for US workers.Trump made it harder for tech businesses to obtain workers through the H-1B programme, tacking on a $100,000 fee that triggered a legal challenge.

‘They do want to make a deal’: Trump says Iran ready for talks — how Tehran responded

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran was ready to negotiate a deal to avoid American military action, but Iran said talks cannot happen under threats.Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “They do want to make a deal.” He added that he had set a deadline for Iran to enter talks but did not reveal what it was. “Hopefully we’ll make a deal. If we don’t make a deal, we’ll see what happens,” Trump said, referring to the deployment of a US naval carrier group near Iran.Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, meanwhile, Tehran was “ready to begin negotiations if they take place on an equal footing, based on mutual interests and mutual respect”, but, he emphasised, “I want to state firmly that Iran’s defensive and missile capabilities will never be subject to negotiation”, adding that no plans were in place to meet with US officials about resuming talks.Trump has repeatedly warned of military action if Iran does not agree to US demands, which include limits on its nuclear programme and missile capabilities. Iran has said it would retaliate against any US strike. Turkey has offered to mediate between the two sides.

Sunetra Pawar to be named NCP leader, to take oath as deputy CM tomorrow: Chhagan Bhujbal

NEW DELHI: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will hold a meeting of its legislature party on January 31 to name Sunetra Pawar, wife of late deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, as its leader, senior party leader and Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal said on Friday.Speaking to reporters at the NCP office, Bhujbal said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has conveyed that he has no objection to Sunetra Pawar taking oath as deputy chief minister as early as Saturday, provided the legislature party formally takes a decision. Ajit Pawar was killed in a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday, leaving the deputy chief minister’s post vacant.“The legislature party meeting of the NCP will be convened on Saturday, where Sunetra Pawar will be named as its leader. Many leaders want her to become the deputy CM,” Bhujbal said. He added that the immediate priority was to fill the vacant post of legislature party leader and subsequently the post of deputy chief minister.Bhujbal said senior leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare were examining procedural aspects, including the mourning period. “(Senior NCP leaders) Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare are looking into the technicalities of the mourning period and other finer details…Sometimes, there is a three-day mourning period and sometimes ten days,” he said, adding that the final decision would be taken at the legislature party meeting.Earlier, Bhujbal said NCP leaders had met Chief Minister Fadnavis to discuss the matter. “We met the Chief Minister… We also met him last night. We asked whether everything, including the swearing-in ceremony and other formalities, could be done tomorrow. The chief minister said he had no objection. As you know, when a person passes away, sometimes mourning lasts for three days, sometimes for ten days, during which people do not step out. I am not fully aware of all such customs, but these matters are being considered. (Sunil) Tatkare and Praful Patel are also giving their inputs. In any case, a decision will be taken within the next two to three hours.”Sunetra Pawar is currently a Rajya Sabha MP and not a member of either House of the Maharashtra legislature. The Baramati assembly seat in Pune district has fallen vacant following Ajit Pawar’s death. NCP leaders also met the chief minister on Friday to stake claim to the portfolios held by Ajit Pawar.

Australian Open 2026: The agony of being Alexander Zverev in the age of Carlos Alcaraz | Tennis News

For those not familiar, the term sigma male is a modern-day Jungian internet archetype used to describe a man who is ostensibly independent, self-assured, and operates outside traditional social hierarchies. Think Tyler Durden, Travis Bickle, or John Wick.Of course, like most internet slang, it has become a parody of its original meaning, with the term used to describe malignant (and often misogynist) internet personalities that appeal to incels. The term was rather in vogue last year after influencers Jake Paul and Andrew Tate lost fights to professional athletes, with some even dubbing the losses “9/11 for sigma males”. Soliloquies on internet culture aside, the losses were a reminder of the gap that exists between regular people and athletes. Like the time billionaire Bill Ackman learnt this while participating in the Hall of Fame Open, where he could barely lay racket on ball. Most non-athletes wouldn’t last in a cage, ring, or court with a professional. But even amongst professional athletes, there’s a rare breed that has access to a metaphorical place their less hallowed peers wish they could reach. They operate at a level that even fellow professionals fail to comprehend. It’s both mental and physical. As Andre Agassi said after his 2005 US Open Final loss to Roger Federer: “In the tiebreak, he goes to a place that I don’t recognize…. I feel for the man who is fated to play Agassi to his Sampras.”Now Agassi is no shrinking violet; he is the first man to win a Career Golden Slam. One of the greatest returners in the game, and yet he couldn’t believe what Federer was doing.During their time, the Big Three showed how they were a cut above the rest. Their dedication to the craft was unmatched. Novak Djokovic has spent the last decade living like a hermit. Rafa Nadal pushed his body to a level that seemed unfathomable, perfectly epitomised by the John McEnroe line: “This kid is sensational, is he going to play every point like that?” Federer, as Agassi observed, looked like he could play a professional match without breaking a sweat, as if he should wear a smoking jacket instead of tennis gear. Federer looked like he was dancing on the court. Nadal covered every blade of grass, every grain of sand, every inch of clay. Djokovic looked like — and still looks like at 38 — he could go on for days, seemingly powered by a perpetual motion machine from another universe.Ivan Lendl, another man who knows his way around the tennis circuit, observed in 2017 while coaching Andy Murray, who was attempting a comeback after hip surgery: “The top guys are top guys because they do things a little bit better than the other guys. Yes, they can get upset, or the others can upset them, but if they play 100 times they are going to win more than half. They are better in stroke production, movement, physically. You put all that into a package and the package is slightly better than the guys below.”

And at Melbourne Park, Carlos Alcaraz reminded us how he is cut from the same cloth as the GOATs before his era. Before the semi-final, the murmur around the Australian Open — and the online chatter that follows it — suggested this had been too one-sided a tournament so far. One that could have been an email instead of a whole tournament because a Sincaraz final looked inevitable. Sinner and Alcaraz met in six finals in 2025, three of them Grand Slams. They have evenly split the last eight majors. And their meeting in the first Slam of 2026 seemed inevitable until it seemed impossible as Alcaraz lay on the floor. We have seen Alcaraz do remarkable things in his career so far. His drop shot can leave opponents wrong-footed. In the last few years, he has made good on his promise to become a serve bot. At times, he hits shots from angles that even cameras cannot catch.Alcaraz was cruising against Zverev with a two-set lead when cramps laid him low. And suddenly, he couldn’t walk, swing, or move at will. His movement was oddly reminiscent of Aussie cricketer Glenn Maxwell against Afghanistan in the 2024 ODI World Cup, where the Aussie was laid low by cramps. But like Maxwell, Alcaraz found a way out.His medical timeout will be discussed ad nauseam. Zverev’s infuriated response has already launched a million reactions on Tennis Twitter. Boris Becker added his two cents, which he is wont to do on issues outside tennis as well.Perhaps the organisers at Slams go out of their way to help the stars, given that it’s their presence that draws the big bucks and eyeballs. But what’s undeniable is that Alcaraz managed to reach into that special fountain of fortitude available only to the greatest players. Zverev’s outrage during the timeout foreshadowed the things to come.

Even after getting back on his feet, Alcaraz could barely keep up. And yet he would not give up. After the match he explained: “I always say you have to believe in yourself, no matter what you’re struggling [with], what you’ve been through, you’ve got to still believe in yourself all the time.”As Lendl had explained: “That’s how people win tournaments — they fight. It doesn’t come easy. You don’t always play your best and you have to get through that and fighting is part of it. When you play, sometimes you feel tired and you have to push through that pain barrier as well…”The Spaniard never stopped believing, and neither did the crowd, even when Zverev was serving for the match at 5-4. But in what seemed like an instant, Alcaraz had his arms aloft, level at 5-5, and suddenly ahead at 6-5.Watching them side by side was watching two responses to pressure unfold in real time. Zverev had the match on his racket, serving at 5-4, physically strong and dictating rallies, a player built to impose order. Alcaraz could barely move an hour earlier, yet he kept reaching for variety — drop shots, angled returns, sudden changes of pace — as if chaos itself were a weapon. One tried to close the door through force. The other kept opening windows through imagination. In the end, it wasn’t the healthier body that prevailed but the player willing to keep inventing solutions when logic said the match was over. One shot summed up the contrast. Appearing to hit a normal return, Alcaraz suddenly feinted a drop shot at 5-5 that seemed to send Zverev crumbling.Zverev is a good player trying to become great. He was the youngest player to debut in the top 20 since Novak Djokovic. He beat Roger Federer on grass when he was 17. At home, Zverev is called Sascha, the Russian diminutive for Alexander the Great, who wept after believing there was no world left to conquer. But as the match progressed, one wondered whether Sascha could conquer the demons in his mind — the ones that need to be exorcised to win a Grand Slam title.Alcaraz, on the other hand, has no such demons. The Career Grand Slam remains the Holy Grail of tennis. Eight men have done it, with four in the Open Era. The youngest so far is Don Budge, who was 22 years and 11 months when he completed it, though it was during an era when tennis was played on two surfaces: grass and clay. The youngest to do it in the Open Era was Rafael Nadal at 24 years and three months.Alcaraz, on the other hand, could become the youngest to complete the set. The ones standing in his way will be his great rival Sinner or Novak Djokovic, who is 38 now but refuses to go quietly into the night and wants to become the first man to win 25 Slams. Time will tell who emerges triumphant, but one thing is for sure: no matter what happens on Sunday, Alcaraz’s renaissance from the face of defeat will live long in the annals of the Australian Open.

‘India will decide in line with international law’: Palestine FM on Gaza Peace Board invitation for New Delhi

Palestinian FM Shahin Calls India Key Mediator In Israel Conflict, Cites 'Good' Ties With Both Sides

Palestine’s foreign minister Varsen Aghabekian on Friday said that India would decide on joining the proposed Gaza “Board of Peace” in line with its own understanding of peace. She further stressed that any genuine effort to end the conflict should be welcomed.Speaking on the US-backed initiative announced by President Donald Trump, Aghabekian said, “India will decide in line with its understanding of peace, international law. Each country can decide on its own, and each country would look at its interests”.

Palestinian FM Shahin Calls India Key Mediator In Israel Conflict, Cites ‘Good’ Ties With Both Sides

Aghabekian underlined that the participation in the proposed body should be guided by national priorities and respect for international norms.Welcoming diplomatic efforts to end the Gaza war, the Palestinian minister said that any attempt to forge peace was positive. At the same time, she cautioned against external pressure shaping global responses to the conflict. Commenting on Pakistan’s reported inclusion in the proposed body, Aghabekian said that Israel must stop dictating what is acceptable to the international community. She also flagged broader regional risks, observing that continued instability, including tensions between the United States and Iran, was a concern for all countries and had direct implications for Gaza and the wider West Asian region. The remarks come after Trump announced the formation of a “Board of Peace” to oversee post-war governance and reconstruction in Gaza, calling it a key step in the second phase of a US-backed plan to end the conflict. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the body as the “greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled”. According to the White House, the Board of Peace will function as a new international organisation and transitional governing authority for Gaza, focusing on governance reform, reconstruction, economic investment and long-term stability. India has been formally invited to join the proposed board. In a letter shared by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, Trump said the initiative was part of a broader 20-point “Comprehensive Plan” to end the Gaza conflict, first announced in September last year and later endorsed by the UN Security Council through Resolution 2803 in November.New Delhi had received an invitation to join the initiative but has not officially accepted or rejected the offer.Alongside the Board of Peace, Washington has announced the formation of a 15-member Palestinian technocratic body—the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza—which will manage day-to-day governance once the war ends. The committee is expected to operate under the supervision of the proposed board. The plan also includes deploying an international stabilisation force and training selected Palestinian police units.Confirmed members of the Board of Peace include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s special negotiator Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, US financier Marc Rowan, World Bank President Ajay Banga and senior US National Security Council aide Robert Gabriel.A separate Gaza Executive Board will support implementation on the ground, with participation from international diplomats and regional representatives, including from Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.Apart from India, countries such as Argentina, Canada, Egypt, Turkey, Albania and Cyprus have been invited. Pakistan has also confirmed receiving an invitation, with its foreign office saying that Islamabad would continue supporting international efforts for peace and security in Gaza.According to a Bloomberg report, a draft charter of the Trump-led Board of Peace proposes that countries contribute $1 billion to secure long-term membership, with the US president retaining authority over membership and final decision-making.

‘Whitewashing brutal invasions’: BJP on ex-VP Hamid Ansari calling Mahmud of Ghazni ‘Indian’ | India News

'Whitewashing brutal invasions': BJP on ex-VP Hamid Ansari calling Mahmud of Ghazni 'Indian'
Former VP Hamid Ansari (ANI image)

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday strongly criticised former Vice President Hamid Ansari over his remarks describing Sultan of the Ghaznavid Empire Mahmud of Ghazni as an Indian. The party accused him of distorting history and attempting to “whitewash” the brutal invasions of India.Ansari, who served as Vice President during the Congress-led UPA governments from 2007 to 2012 and again from 2012 to 2017, had said that figures commonly described as foreign invaders in textbooks were, in fact, Indians.“Those whom we describe in our textbooks as foreign invaders—whether it is the Lodhis or Ghazni—were all Indian plunderers. They did not come from outside,” Ansari said.Reacting sharply, BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan questioned the Congress party’s position on Ansari’s statement and accused it of attempting to sanitise violent episodes from history. In a post on X, Kesavan said the remarks were “shocking” and recalled that Ansari had been the Congress-led UPA’s choice for Vice President twice.“Ghazni was not a foreign invader, he was Indian’! Indeed shocking remarks by former Vice President Shri Hamid Ansari ji, who was the Congress led UPA govt’s choice for the post of Vice President, not once but twice. Does the Congress leadership and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi agree with such whitewashing of mercenary brutal raids as mere domestic acts, which demolished Hindu temples and murdered thousands?” Kesavan said. He alleged that Islamic invasions beginning in the early eighth century had systematically targeted Hindu religious sites.Kesavan further said Mahmud of Ghazni carried out 17 raids into India in the 11th century, during which he claimed major temples such as those in Mathura and Somnath were attacked. He also linked the issue to the Congress party’s historical opposition to the reconstruction of the Somnath temple.Shehzad Poonawala, also attacked the Congress over Ansari’s comments, accusing the party of consistently “eulogising Hindu haters” and downplaying atrocities committed against Hindus.Speaking to ANI, Poonawala said, “The Congress ecosystem always eulogises Hindu haters. Whoever attacks or commits atrocities on Hindus is always subjected to whitewashing by the Congress ecosystem. Now, Hamid Ansari says that Ghazni was not a cruel person, that he was just an Indian. It shows the Hindu hatred they have in their mind.”Poonawala also expanded his criticism to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of disrespecting constitutional institutions and national traditions by skipping key official events.“‘Sena and Samvidhan ka apmaan is Congress’s pehchaan’. Rahul Gandhi feels his family is above the Constitution and the Army. For him, ‘parivar tantra’ is more important than ‘samvidhan tantra’,” he alleged.

Landmark ruling on women’s health: SC declares menstrual hygiene a Fundamental right; mandates free sanitary pads distribution, separate toilets in schools | India News

Landmark ruling on women's health: SC declares menstrual hygiene a Fundamental right; mandates free sanitary pads distribution, separate toilets in schools

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the right to menstrual hygiene is an integral part of the right to life and the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution. The top court has issued a series of binding directions to states, Union Territories and schools to ensure dignity, health and equality for girls and women. The order was given by the bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan. Pronouncing its judgment on a plea seeking free sanitary pads and adequate sanitation facilities for schoolgirls, the apex court directed all states and Union Territories to provide biodegradable sanitary napkins free of cost to girl students in all schools.“Before parting with the issue, we want to say that this pronouncement is not just for stakeholders of the legal system. It is also meant for classrooms where girls hesitate to ask for help. It is for teachers who want to help but are not able to due to the lack of resources. Progress is measured by how we protect the vulnerable”, Justice Pardiwala observed before parting with the judgment. It also ordered authorities to ensure separate toilets for female and male students, along with disability-friendly toilets, in every school. The apex body made it clear that the compliance would be mandatory for both government and private institutions. It warned that private schools could face derecognition if they fail to provide separate toilets for girls and boys or do not ensure access to free sanitary pads for students. The bench said that access to menstrual hygiene is not a matter of charity or policy discretion, but a constitutional entitlement flowing from the right to live with dignity and bodily autonomy. The top court further directed that it will hold government accountable if they fail to provide toilets and free sanitary pads to girls. It observed that lack of basic facilities and stigma around menstruation directly affects girls’ health, education and privacy. The judgment follows proceedings initiated in November last year, when the court took cognisance of a disturbing incident at Maharshi Dayanand University in Haryana, where three women sanitation workers were allegedly forced to send photographs of their sanitary pads to prove they were menstruating. The incident had triggered nationwide outrage over “period-shaming”.At that stage, a bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan had expressed concern over such practices in educational institutions and workplaces, observing that they reflected a deeply troubling mindset. The court had issued notice to the Centre on a petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), which highlighted multiple instances of women and girls being subjected to invasive and degrading checks. In its petition, the SCBA argued that such practices were “in gross violation of their right to life, dignity, privacy and bodily integrity under Article 21”.It also stressed that women workers, particularly in the unorganised sector, are entitled to decent working conditions that respect biological differences and protect them from humiliating treatment during menstruation.During the earlier hearing, the court had observed that if a woman was unable to perform heavy work due to menstruation-related pain, alternative arrangements should be made instead of subjecting her to degrading scrutiny. “If someone is saying that because of this reason heavy work could not be done, it could have been accepted and some other persons could have been deployed,” the bench had said, expressing hope that meaningful guidelines would emerge from the case. The Haryana government had informed the court that an inquiry had been initiated into the university incident and that action had been taken against two persons responsible.
