Railways announces 89 special trains following IndiGo flight cancellations

The Railways announced 89 special trains across all zones to be operated in the next three days starting Saturday to help people facing travel disruptions due to the mass flight cancellations by IndiGo. In a coordinated move by the Railway Ministry, the trains, which are to make over 100 trips, were arranged in the shortest possible time after analysis of train traffic situations in major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Patna, and Howrah, among others. “The number of special trains and their trips might increase further depending on the traffic scenario. All zones have been asked to make use of all available resources, including rolling stock as well as manpower, to safely operate these trains for the convenience of lakhs of passengers stranded at different parts of the country due to flight cancellations,” said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information & Publicity, Railway Board. Officials said efforts are being made to make people aware about the trains, and some divisions have even disseminated information at nearby airports to help passengers. South Eastern Railway has issued a press release and informed the Airport Authority to display information regarding the newly introduced special train services. “Western Railway will run seven special trains on a special fare between Mumbai Central-New Delhi, Mumbai Central-Bhiwani, Mumbai Central-Shakur Basti, Bandra Terminus-Durgapura, Valsad-Bilaspur, Sabarmati-Delhi and Sabarmati-Delhi Sarai Rohilla stations,” a press note said. Similarly, South Central Railway on Saturday announced that it would run four special trains to manage the surge in passengers resulting from the large-scale cancellation of IndiGo flights. Central Railway and Northern Railway have planned 14 and 10 special trains respectively, and officials said these numbers are being further reviewed to meet any rising requirements. Other zones have also issued notifications regarding special trains along with their schedules. For at least five days in a row, IndiGo flight operations have significantly disrupted, with a large number of cancellations and delays causing hardships to thousands of passengers. In many cases, baggages have been misplaced.

‘Warm, engaging’: Shashi Tharoor says he enjoyed Putin banquet, shares pictures

Shashi Tharoor Says Strengthening Russia Ties Won’t Affect Relations With US, China

“Attended the Rashtrapati Bhavan banquet for President Putin last night. A warm and engaging atmosphere reigned. Enjoyed my conversations with many of the attendees, especially my dining companions from the Russian delegation,” Tharoor wrote. Tharoor’s presence at the dinner has triggered tension within the Congress once more. Earlier, he had confirmed that he received an official invitation and said he would “definitely go”. This came at a time when the party claimed that invitations were not sent to leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. Several Congress leaders criticised the decision. Pawan Khera said the government was “breaching protocol” by not inviting the two LoPs, and questioned why Tharoor accepted the invitation. Khera argued that party members should recognise the “game being played” and avoid being part of it. Other leaders, including Salman Khurshid, also said that the move goes against democratic traditions. Rahul Gandhi too expressed displeasure, saying foreign dignitaries usually meet the leader of the opposition, and claimed that the government prevents such meetings due to “insecurity”.“Generally, the tradition has been that whoever visits India, the LoP used to have a meeting. It used to happen in the Vajpayee government, the Manmohan Singh government. But this is not the case now,” he said.

UK imposes first domestic terror sanctions on Sikh businessman; cites alleged Babar Khalsa links

The UK government has imposed sanctions on a British Sikh businessman and a group linked to him in the first use of its new Domestic Counter-Terrorism Regime aimed at cutting off funding to the pro-Khalistan militant outfit Babbar Khalsa.Gurpreet Singh Rehal, associated with the Panjab Warriors sports investment firm, has been hit with an asset freeze and a director disqualification after being suspected of ties to organisations involved in terrorism in India, the UK Treasury said on Thursday. The Treasury said it believes Rehal is involved in the activities of Babbar Khalsa and Babbar Akali Lehar, including promoting and encouraging the groups, recruiting for them, providing financial services, and supporting their operations, which allegedly include purchasing weapons and other military equipment.“This landmark action shows we are prepared to use every tool at our disposal to choke off funding for terrorism – wherever it occurs and whoever is responsible. The UK stands firmly with peaceful communities against those who promote violence and hatred,” Lucy Rigby, UK’s economic secretary, as cited by PTI. “We will not stand by while terrorists exploit Britain’s financial system,” she added. The sanctions prohibit all UK individuals and entities from handling any funds or assets linked to Rehal or Babbar Akali Lehar, and from providing them with financial services or support. The restrictions also apply to any organisations they own or control, unless permitted by an HM Treasury licence or other approved exemption.“Rehal is also subject to director disqualification sanctions which prohibit him from acting as a director of a company or directly or indirectly taking part in or being concerned in the promotion, formation or management of a company,” the Treasury said, as cited by PTI.The sanctions imposed on Rehal also cover entities linked to him, including his organisations Saving Punjab, Whitehawk Consultations Ltd, and the unincorporated group/association Loha Designs. This week’s action follows close coordination between the Treasury and law enforcement agencies, highlighting what the UK government described as its commitment to safeguarding national security and protecting communities affected by terrorism.Under the Counter-Terrorism (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019, HM Treasury has the authority to freeze assets and impose restrictions on individuals and entities suspected of involvement in terrorism, a measure intended to prevent terrorist financing and shield the UK’s financial system from abuse.Breaching these sanctions can result in penalties of up to seven years’ imprisonment on indictment, or civil fines of up to £1 million or 50 per cent of the breach value, whichever is higher. The Treasury said Babbar Khalsa, which also operates under the name Babbar Khalsa International, is a proscribed terrorist organisation, and its assessment classifies Babbar Akali Lehar as an “involved person” under the regulations.“Babbar Khalsa (which also uses the name Babbar Khalsa International) is a proscribed terrorist organisation. HM Treasury assesses Babbar Akali Lehar to be an “involved person” under the regulations,” said the UK government.

NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded his two-day state visit to India on Friday with a special dinner hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This was his first trip to India since December 2021—and his first since the Ukraine war began in February 2022—during which he attended the 23rd annual summit between the two nations in Delhi.Earlier in the day, Putin was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan before proceeding to Hyderabad House for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His first presidential visit to India took place in October 2000, when he travelled to Delhi and Agra. Here are the key takeaways from his visit:

  • PM breaks protocol: Upon his arrival on Thursday evening, Putin was received at Palam airport by PM Modi, who broke protocol to welcome him personally — a gesture that underscored the unusual warmth and longstanding rapport between the two leaders.
  • ‘Carpooling’: The two leaders then “carpooled” to the prime minister’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg for a private dinner. The gesture echoed their earlier ride together in Putin’s car to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit venue in Tianjin last September, a small but telling display of the easy camaraderie they often share.
  • The Bhagwad Gita: After the private dinner, the prime minister presented his guest with a Russian edition of the Bhagwad Gita. Sharing a photograph from their interaction, PM Modi highlighted the universal appeal of the scripture. “Presented a copy of the Gita in Russian to President Putin. The teachings of the Gita offer inspiration to millions across the world,” he wrote.
  • Rajghat visit: Putin also went to Rajghat and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
  • PM’s message on Ukraine: During their talks, PM Modi underscored that on the Ukraine conflict, India is not neutral but on the side of peace.” He said, “Whenever I have interacted with world leaders, I have always made it clear that India is not neutral. India has a side, and that side is peace. We support all efforts aimed at peace, and we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with every initiative that furthers it.”
  • Putin ‘grateful’ to India: The Russian leader responded by saying he was “grateful” for the attention India was giving to peace efforts on Ukraine. He added that Russia and India continue to cooperate closely across multiple sectors, including defence, space exploration, artificial intelligence and several other strategic areas.
  • India’s Russian oil conundrum: With New Delhi facing US tariffs of 50 per cent — half of them linked to its purchase of Russian oil — Putin sent a pointed message to the West, particularly Washington, by declaring that Moscow is ready to ensure “uninterrupted shipments of fuel to India.”
  • Economic Cooperation: During their joint briefing, the prime minister announced a new economic cooperation programme aimed at expanding bilateral trade volume to $100 billion through 2030 — a significant boost to ties between the two countries. “Taking the India–Russia economic partnership to new heights is our common priority,” PM Modi said.
  • Free Trade Agreement: Speaking at a business forum later, PM Modi noted that discussions have begun on the Free Trade Agreement between India and Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
  • Putin echoes ‘Sabka Saath…’: During the Rashtrapati Bhavan dinner, Putin invoked Prime Minister Modi’s trademark slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (striving together for inclusive growth), applying it to the India–Russia partnership. “I know in India you say ‘Go Together, Grow Together’ (Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas), which truly reflects the nature and character of Russia–India relations,” he remarked.
