Tamil Nadu election 2026: The big Annamalai question — what BJP gains, what it risks | India News

BJP Drops Annamalai From TN Candidate List, Signals Alliance-First Strategy?

NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader K Annamalai on Saturday clarified that he was not denied a ticket for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, stating that he himself had chosen not to contest and would instead focus on campaigning for the party and its allies.“I had already informed the core committee in writing that I would not be contesting in any constituency. Therefore, it is not that I was denied a ticket the truth is that I chose not to contest the election,” Annamalai told reporters at Chennai airport.

BJP Drops Annamalai From TN Candidate List, Signals Alliance-First Strategy?

The clarification comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of 27 candidates for the April 23 assembly polls, with Annamalai’s absence drawing attention across political circles.

.

Annamalai said he would take on a broader organisational role during the elections while campaigning for BJP across multiple states.“… In this election, my role is to campaign for candidates across Tamil Nadu. Right now, the party has given me the responsibility to campaign in Puducherry and Kerala till the 7th (April). From the 7th to the 23rd, I have to campaign for all BJP and NDA candidates across Tamil Nadu. That is the responsibility given by the party to me. I’ll be fulfilling that responsibility,” he said.He also expressed gratitude to the party leadership for accepting his decision.“When I did not express any interest in contesting, how could the leadership allocate me a ticket? If I had decided to contest, it wouldn’t have mattered which constituency I could have contested from anywhere. I am grateful to the BJP leadership for respecting my decision and giving me the opportunity to campaign in support of the NDA alliance candidates,” he added. However, there were reports that Annamalai had conveyed to the party national leadership his “extreme” displeasure over the constituencies allocated for the national party by the AIADMK.Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran termed Annamalai’s absence from candidate list a leadership call.“This is a decision from the high command…,” Nagendran said, expressing confidence in the party’s candidates. “All the 27 candidates will surely win this time.”Despite not contesting, Annamalai remains central to the BJP’s campaign strategy. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said his popularity would benefit the party across the state.“Annamalai is the most popular leader of the BJP, not just in Tamil Nadu, but he commands a large following all over the country. He has been given the responsibility of campaigning for all the candidates in Tamil Nadu. I am extremely confident that Annamalai’s popularity and his campaign all across Tamil Nadu will translate into victory for the BJP candidates all across the state,” Surya said. The BJP’s candidate list includes senior leaders such as Tamilisai Soundararajan from Mylapore, Vanathi Srinivasan from Coimbatore North, and Union minister L Murugan from Avinashi.Annamalai, a former IPS officer known as “Singham”, had earlier served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president before being replaced by Nagendran. He played a key role in expanding the party’s presence in the state and led outreach initiatives such as the “En Mann, En Makkal” yatra. The BJP is contesting the elections as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led in the state by the AIADMK. Under the alliance arrangement, the AIADMK will contest 169 of the 234 seats, while the BJP will contest 27 seats alongside other allies.Tamil Nadu will go to polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. The main contest is expected between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the NDA, with actor-turned-politician Vijay also entering the fray. Why the move may work for BJPAnnamalai is freed from constituency-level responsibilities, allowing him to campaign extensively across multiple regions. His role as a star campaigner strengthens BJP’s outreach across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. This also helps BJP to push for a stable alliance with AIADMK. His absence reduces friction with Edappadi K Palaniswami, aiding smoother alliance coordination.Annamalai was known for his ruthless criticism of AIADMK and DMK. Subsequently, EPS had made Annamalai’s ouster from state politics a precondition for alliance talks ahead of the polls. The leadership transition to Nainar Nagendran signalled a more alliance-friendly and structured approach. It allowed the party to project a unified command and avoid internal contradictions during elections. What might go against BJPAnnamalai’s absence from the ballot could demoralise grassroots workers who viewed him as a key leader. BJP risks weakening its independent “third force” narrative in Tamil Nadu politics. His aggressive campaign style, which attracted younger voters, may not fully translate without him contesting. The move may create confusion among voters regarding the party’s leadership direction in the state. It could be perceived as BJP conceding space to AIADMK within the alliance structure. Lack of a strong face as a candidate may also impact local-level electoral momentum.

‘Ghayal hoon isliye ghatak hoon’: Raghav Chadha tears into AAP allegations with Dhurandhar reference | India News

'Ghayal hoon isliye ghatak hoon': Raghav Chadha tears into AAP allegations with Dhurandhar reference

NEW DELHI: Raghav Chadha on Saturday hit back at the Aam Aadmi Party after being removed as the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha and replaced by Ashok Kumar Mittal, rejecting the allegations cited against him. Terming the move part of a “scripted campaign”, Chadha alleged that it was a “coordinated attack” aimed at targeting him. In a video shared on X, he said he would expose “every lie” and responded to each charge levelled by the party, ending with a popular line from Dhurandhar: “Ghayal hoon isliye ghatak hoon” (I may be wounded, but I am also stronger because of it).“The Aam Aadmi Party made three allegations and said that because of these, Raghav Chadha should not be allowed to speak in Parliament. I would like to address all three,” he said.“The first allegation is that when the opposition walks out of Parliament, I remain seated and do not join them. This is completely false — a blatant lie. I challenge anyone to show even a single instance where the opposition walked out and I did not join them. Parliament has CCTV cameras everywhere — bring out the footage and the truth will be clear,” he added. He further rejected the claim that he refused to sign the impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.“The second allegation is that I refused to sign the impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner. This too is false. No leader from the party ever asked me — formally or informally — to sign it. In fact, several Rajya Sabha MPs from the party themselves did not sign the motion. So why is the blame being placed solely on me? Moreover, such a motion requires 50 signatures in the Rajya Sabha, and that number could easily have been met. So why the noise?” he said.Tearing into the third allegations of raising “trivial issues” in the Parliament, Chadha said: “The third allegation is that I am afraid and therefore raise trivial issues. Let me clarify — I did not go to Parliament to shout, create chaos, or break microphones. I went there to raise public issues. I have spoken on GST, income tax, Punjab’s water, Delhi’s air pollution, the condition of government schools, strengthening public healthcare, and problems faced by passengers in Indian Railways. I have even raised issues like menstrual health, which people often hesitate to discuss, along with unemployment and inflation. You can check my four-year parliamentary record — I went there to create impact, not disruption.”AAP on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha secretariat that Ashok Kumar Mittal has been appointed as its new deputy leader in the Upper House, replacing Raghav Chadha.Chadha, who has been a Member of Parliament since April 2022, has frequently drawn attention for raising key issues in Parliament. Recently, he flagged concerns over the practice of “sarpanch pati” or “panchayat pati,” where women elected to reserved local body seats often remain nominal representatives while actual authority is exercised by male family members. He urged the government to take steps to ensure that women elected to Panchayati Raj institutions are able to exercise real power, in line with the intent of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.

‘Didn’t grant statehood to Puducherry’: Vijay slams BJP, Congress ahead of polls | India News

'Didn’t grant statehood to Puducherry': Vijay slams BJP, Congress ahead of polls
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay

NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Saturday criticised both the BJP and Congress for failing to grant statehood to Puducherry despite ruling at the Centre for years. “Neither Congress nor BJP could give statehood to Puducherry despite holding power at the Centre. A TVK government will make a 100% effort to secure full statehood legally, free from interference by the lieutenant governor,” Vijay said at an election rally in the poll-bound Union territory.Puducherry, a former French colony, officially merged with India in 1962 and was granted Union territory status the following year. It is administered by a lieutenant governor appointed by the President on the Centre’s recommendation, while the elected regional government has limited powers—fuelling a long-standing demand for full statehood.Meanwhile, the actor-politician also urged voters to support TVK’s “whistle” symbol to usher in a “one-finger revolution,” an apparent reference to a dialogue from one of his films.Vijay took a swipe at both major alliances in the region. “The ruling All India NR Congress (AINRC)-BJP combine is an exhausted alliance. Just like in Tamil Nadu, the opposition DMK-Congress alliance in Puducherry is a confused one,” the Tamil superstar, popularly known as “Thalapathy” (leader), added. He also introduced TVK’s candidates, describing them as leaders who “stand with the people,” and outlined a series of welfare promises. These include:

  • Conducting local body elections within six months of assuming power
  • Rs 25 lakh medical insurance to every family
  • 200 units of free electricity to those below the poverty line
  • Establishing the Puducherry University of Applied Sciences and Arts

The Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 members, of which 30 are elected and three are nominated by the Union government. Voting for the 30 seats will be held on April 9, with over 9.4 lakh voters set to decide the fate of 294 candidates. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, alongside assembly election results in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, which are voting around the same period as Puducherry.

MK Stalin at Nagercoil rally

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, campaigning ahead of the state assembly elections, on Saturday slammed the Union government’s proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), alleging it targets minorities, particularly Christians. Also Read | ‘Anxiety among minorities’: Shashi Tharoor questions FCRA Ammendment BillThe FCRA bill could not be taken up for discussion in the Lok Sabha due to opposition protests. The BJP-led Centre has defended the legislation, with Union minister Kiren Rijiju asserting that it aims to protect national security and is not targeted at any particular religion.Addressing an election rally in Nagarcoil, Stalin called the FCRA bill an “assault on freedom of religion.”“The FCRA bill is draconian. It targets minorities, especially Christian organisations. If passed, recognition of Christian NGOs can be cancelled and their funds taken away even for minor lapses,” PTI quoted him as saying. The DMK supremo added, “The bill is tantamount to taking away rights provided by the Constitution, and it is a serious assault on the freedom of religion and also on people who wish to do social service. SCs, STs, and the rural poor will be affected the most.”Stalin also claimed he was the first to condemn the proposed amendments and stated that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging that the bill be withdrawn.Nagercoil, where Stalin addressed the rally, has a significant Christian population. According to the 2011 national census, the town in Kanniyakumari district had a population of 2.24 lakh, of which around 30% are Christians.Meanwhile, Stalin further alleged that the Centre has failed to protect Tamil Nadu fishermen and criticised its foreign policy. He also claimed that PM Modi has weakened India’s influence, even among smaller neighbouring countries.Voting for all 234 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu is scheduled for April 23, with counting of votes set for May 4. In the 2021 polls, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance won 159 seats, with the DMK alone securing 133 victories—well above the majority mark of 118.

CM Rekha Gupta unveils Delhi’s air pollution mitigation plan for 2026 | India News

CM Rekha Gupta unveils Delhi's air pollution mitigation plan for 2026

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday unveiled the Air Pollution Mitigation Action Plan 2026, announcing a series of measures including strict enforcement of the “No PUC, No Fuel” rule, curbs on polluting vehicles and a push for cleaner transport and dust control.Announcing the rollout of the plan, Gupta said the initiative builds on the government’s ‘historic’ Green Budget for 2026-27 and aims to translate clean air goals into measurable outcomes. The action plan, announced after a high-level review meeting held at the Mukhyamantri Janseva Sadan, is aimed at tackling key sources of pollution such as vehicular emissions, road dust, construction activity, industrial discharge and biomass burning, officials said.

‘Can’t Stay Two Days In Delhi’: Gadkari On Severe Pollution, Transport Sector Role

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said clean air and environmental protection were now central to the government’s policy framework and would be backed by dedicated budgetary allocations and strict enforcement.“This is not just a policy announcement, it is an enforcement-driven campaign powered by resources, technology and strict oversight,” she said.Taking a tough stance on vehicular pollution, Gupta said the “No PUC (Pollution Under Control), No Fuel” rule would be strictly implemented with support from Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and digital tracking systems. From November 1, entry of goods vehicles into the national capital will be restricted to those compliant with Bharat Stage (BS)-VI norms or powered by CNG or electricity, officials said. The government will also regulate non-essential traffic inflow and may consider staggered office timings, work-from-home directives and additional restrictions on polluting vehicles during periods of severe air pollution, they added. As part of efforts to reduce vehicular emissions, the government plans to expand the city’s bus fleet to 13,760 by 2028-29, with priority being given to electric buses.Officials further said the government also plans to improve last-mile connectivity through better integration of metro and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) networks with feeder buses, e-autos and shared mobility services. To accelerate electric mobility, 32,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points will be installed over the next four years, while the proposed EV Policy 2026 will focus on two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and the transition of government fleets to cleaner fuels, they said. The chief minister also announced measures to ease traffic congestion at 62 identified hotspots through time-bound interventions and the rollout of an Intelligent Traffic Management System, along with smart parking solutions and pricing reforms.Recognising road dust as a major contributor to pollution, the government said it would deploy mechanical road sweepers, water sprinklers, anti-smog guns and mist spray systems on a large scale, with all operations monitored through GPS tracking and a centralised dashboard.Nearly 3,500 km of roads are to be redeveloped with paved surfaces, green buffers and utility ducts, while construction-related pollution will be monitored through an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled C&D Portal 2.0 for real-time tracking, geo-tagging and enforcement, officials said. The government has also set deadlines for clearing legacy landfill sites, such as Okhla by July 2026, Bhalswa by December 2026 and Ghazipur by December 2027, and have said that strict action would be taken against biomass burning and non-compliant industrial units. The city’s air quality monitoring network will be expanded, and a centralised Green War Room and Integrated Command and Control Centre will be set up to strengthen environmental governance, they added.Ward-level “Vayu Rakshak” teams will also be deployed and the 311 platform upgraded to improve citizen reporting and participation, they said. The government has set a target of planting 70 lakh trees, shrubs and bamboo in 2026-27, with a long-term goal of over one crore plantations across the city.Gupta said the action plan would also rely on innovation and public participation, with research institutions, technical experts and startups being involved in developing solutions to curb pollution.“The Action Plan 2026 is not just about intent; it is a robust execution model with financial backing, strict timelines and accountability at every level. Clean air is not a luxury; it is a fundamental right, and we are committed to delivering it,” she said. The meeting was attended by cabinet ministers Pravesh Sahib Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Pankaj Kumar Singh, chief secretary Rajiv Verma, representatives of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Traffic Police, and senior government officials, officials said.

Those hit by ‘kissing disease’ are 3 times more likely to develop multiple sclerosis | India News

Those hit by 'kissing disease' are 3 times more likely to develop multiple sclerosis

NEW DELHI: Next time you wake up with crushing fatigue, a high fever, a raw throat and swollen glands, take note. The trigger behind it could be something as simple as a kiss.Infectious mononucleosis, or the ‘kissing disease’, is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) – one of the most common human infections worldwide. It spreads through saliva, not just kissing, but every day close contact.A US study using records from the Mayo Clinic-led Rochester Epidemiology Project, tracking nearly 19,000 people, has found those who develop mono are over three times more likely to develop multiple sclerosis (MS) later. The risk remains small – 0.17% among those with mono versus 0.07% without – but the disease also appeared earlier in those infected.MS is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves, disrupting signals between the brain and body. It can begin with fatigue, vision problems, numbness and imbalance and may worsen over time.Experts said the link is strong but not causal. Dr Sudhir Kumar, neurologist at Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, said the apparent rise in younger MS cases likely reflects better awareness and earlier MRI-based diagnosis, not a true shift in onset. While EBV is closely linked to MS, it infects most people, whereas the disease remains uncommon. “EBV may act as a trigger in genetically susceptible individuals, but it is not sufficient on its own to cause MS,” he said, adding it is still unclear if earlier infection leads to earlier disease in practice. He cautioned against routine long-term monitoring after mono, noting the absolute risk is low and over-testing may cause unnecessary anxiety. Instead, awareness is key. Early symptoms – such as blurred or painful vision, tingling or numbness, unexplained fatigue, brief weakness, imbalance, or a shock-like sensation down the spine – are often missed as they come and go, but any neurological symptom lasting over 24 hours should be evaluated.Prof Manjari Tripathi, head of neurology at AIIMS, Delhi, said EBV is widespread in India, especially among children and adolescents. She said, “MS is a complex disease with multiple risk factors – genetic, environmental and immune. EBV may act as a trigger, but it is not the sole cause, and most people with the infection will never develop MS.”Scientists say the findings strengthen the case for preventive strategies, including a potential EBV vaccine.
