Sathankulam custodial deaths: 9 cops convicted 5 years after father, son killed in Tamil Nadu | India News

Sathankulam custodial deaths: 9 cops convicted 5 years after father, son killed in Tamil Nadu

A court in Tamil Nadu on Monday found all nine accused policemen guilty in the 2020 custodial torture and deaths of a father and son in Sathankulam. The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai delivered its judgment in the case related to the deaths of P Jeyaraj and his son J Beniks, who died after alleged custodial torture in Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district in June 2020.Ten policemen, who were subsequently placed under suspension, were arrested in connection with the case. The accused included inspector Sridhar; sub-inspectors Balakrishnan and Raghu Ganesh; head constables Murugan and A Samadurai; and constables M. Muthuraja, S Chelladurai, X Thomas Francis and S Vailmuthu, along with special sub-inspector Paldurai. They were lodged in Madurai Central Prison following their arrest.Paldurai later died of Covid-19.The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the probe, filed its chargesheet against the remaining nine policemen on September 25, 2020. A supplementary chargesheet was submitted on August 12, 2022 after further investigation. The CBI said that Beniks had gone to the Sathankulam police station after his father, Jeyaraj, was detained there, seeking an explanation for the detention. According to the agency, a scuffle broke out between Beniks and the policemen, following which inspector Sridhar allegedly intervened and directed the officers to teach him a lesson on “how to behave with police.”The CBI alleged that both Jeyaraj and Beniks were then subjected to repeated rounds of custodial torture, during which their clothes were removed, further intensifying the brutality. The investigation also found that the following morning, Sridhar allegedly instructed a sweeper to clean the floor of the main hall and other areas of the police station in an attempt to destroy evidence. The agency said the victims’ blood-stained clothes were changed twice before they were taken to the hospital, and again at the hospital before they were produced for remand. The discarded clothes were allegedly thrown into a hospital dustbin to eliminate evidence. The probe further revealed that Jeyaraj and Beniks had not violated Covid-19 lockdown norms and that no altercation had taken place between them and the police on Kamarajar Salai in Sathankulam on the evening of June 19. According to the CBI, a false case had been registered against the two men.A total of 105 witnesses were examined in the case, including Selvarani, the wife of Jeyaraj, and R Revathi, who was then serving as a woman head constable at the Sathankulam police station, as cited by PTI.The court also examined 116 documents as evidence, including the judicial inquiry reports related to the deaths of Jeyaraj and Beniks.

‘Situation worrisome’: PM Modi clears India’s stand on Iran war, flags impact of Hormuz disruption | India News

'Situation worrisome': PM Modi clears India's stand on Iran war, flags impact of Hormuz disruption
Prime Minister Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed the Lok Sabha on the ongoing crisis in West Asia, triggered on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran, plunging the Gulf region into turmoil. The continued bombings and strikes across the oil-rich region have posed serious challenges to the global economy, the Prime Minister noted in his address. He also highlighted the large presence of Indian nationals in the region and assured that the government is extending full support to them.He added that Indian missions are in constant touch with the diaspora in the affected areas.

Here are key quotes from PM Modi’s address on West Asia:

  • “The crisis in West Asia has negatively impacted the global economy and people.”

  • “The West Asia war has created unprecedented challenges for India as well.”

  • “The situation in West Asia is worrisome. Over the past 2–3 weeks, EAM S Jaishankar and Union minister Hardeep Puri have briefed the House. This conflict has been ongoing for more than three weeks and is severely impacting the global economy and people’s lives. That is why the world is urging all sides for an early resolution.”

  • “India has extensive trade relations with countries at war and affected by the conflict. The region where the conflict is taking place is also an important route for our trade with other countries around the world, particularly for a large portion of our crude oil and gas needs. This region is also important for us for another reason.”

  • “Nearly 1 crore Indians live and work in the Gulf countries. Commercial ships operate there. The number of Indian Crew members is also very high. Due to these various reasons, India’s concerns are naturally greater. Therefore, it is essential that a unified voice and consensus reach the world regarding this crisis from the Parliament.”

  • “Since this war began, every Indian in the affected countries has been provided assistance. I have spoken over the phone with the heads of state of most West Asian countries for two rounds. All have assured the safety of Indians. During the conflict, some people have lost their lives, and some have been injured.”

  • “Our missions in the affected countries are continuously engaged in helping Indians. Whether it’s Indians working there or tourists who have gone there, everyone is being provided with all possible assistance. Our missions are regularly issuing advisories. 24/7 outreach rooms and emergency helplines have been established in India and other affected countries. Through these, all affected people are being provided with the latest information. In times of crisis, the safety of Indians in India and abroad is crucial.”

  • “3.75 lakh Indians returned home safely since the beginning of West Asia war.”

  • “Since the war began, more than 3,75,000 Indians have returned safely to India. From Iran, nearly 1,000 Indians have returned safely so far, of which over 700 are medical students.”

  • “In view of the situation, CBSE has cancelled Class 10 and 12 exams in the schools in Gulf countries and is taking necessary steps to ensure students’ education continues without disruption.”

  • “A large quantity of crude oil, gas, fertilisers and many essential items comes to India through the Strait of Hormuz route. Since the war began, the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has become very challenging.”

  • “Despite this, our government has made efforts to ensure that the supply of petrol, diesel, and gas is not severely impacted. As we all know, the country imports 60% of its LPG requirement. Due to uncertainty in supply, the government has prioritised domestic LPG consumers.”

  • “At the same time, domestic production of LPG is also being increased. Continuous efforts have also been made to ensure that the supply of petrol and diesel across the country remains smooth.”

  • “India’s role in diplomacy is clear. From the beginning, we have expressed our deep concern about this conflict. I have personally spoken to all the relevant leaders in West Asia. I have urged everyone to de-escalate tensions and end this conflict.”

Poll

What do you think is the biggest challenge resulting from the West Asia war for India?

  • “India has condemned attacks on civilians, energy, and transport infrastructure. Attacks on commercial vessels and the blockage of international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz are unacceptable. India is continuously making efforts through diplomacy to ensure the safe passage of Indian ships, even in this war-like environment.”

  • “India has always advocated for the welfare of humanity and peace. I reiterate that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions to this problem. All our efforts are aimed at reducing tensions and ending this conflict. Endangering the lives of anyone in this war is not in the interest of humanity. Therefore, India’s efforts are to encourage all parties to reach a peaceful resolution as soon as possible. When such crises arise, some elements try to exploit them.”

Martyrs’ Day: How India honours soldiers who gave their lives for the nation | India News

Martyrs’ Day: How India honours soldiers who gave their lives for the nation

In India’s collective consciousness, a soldier killed in the line of duty is not seen as just a casualty of war, but as a martyr, a ‘shaheed’ whose sacrifice becomes part of the nation’s identity. On Martyrs’ Day, observed on March 23, India remembers the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, who were executed by the British in 1931. Their legacy continues in the sacrifices of the soldiers who serve the country today, and Martyrs’ Day is an opportunity to understand how India honours their acts of bravery.Over time, India has built a system to honour its fallen soldiers, combining official ceremonies, support for families, and public memory. From the Amar Chakra at the National War Memorial to pensions and education schemes that reach families in remote areas, India tries to ensure that no soldier who dies for the nation is forgotten. The most solemn event is the arrival of a martyr’s body in a hometown. The coffin is often draped in the national flag and escorted by a guard of honour, with local politicians, police, and civil society leaders present. In many cases, the local community organises a procession and a brief ceremony, showing that the martyr belongs not just to the regiment, but also to the village, the town, and the nation.

Gallantry awards

India’s gallantry awards are among the highest honours given to members of the armed forces and, in some cases, civilians.Recipients’ families are invited to formal ceremonies, often at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the medal is presented, and the story of the soldier’s valour narrated. The highest wartime award is the Param Vir Chakra, awarded for “most conspicuous bravery” in the presence of the enemy. It is followed by the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra, which recognise acts of gallantry during military operations. In peacetime, the country awards the Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra for acts of bravery, including counter-insurgency operations and rescue missions.

.

.

These awards are announced on Republic Day and Independence Day, ensuring national recognition for acts of courage.

National War Memorial

The National War Memorial in New Delhi stands as a central place of remembrance for soldiers who died in service after independence. The memorial stands with an eternal flame called the Amar Chakra (Circle of immortality) at its centre. Before the National War Memorial, the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate served as the main site for paying tribute to soldiers, especially those who died in the 1971 war.Around the Amar Chakra, concentric “walls of honour” are inscribed with the names of more than 26,000 soldiers, each slab symbolising the ancient war formation of a ‘Chakravyuh’, and every soldier’s name etched in granite to signify permanence and dignity.Every evening, a Retreat Ceremony is held at the National War Memorial, where the national flag and the flags of the Army, Navy, and Air Force are lowered before sunset as the Last Post is sounded. On Sundays and special occasions, a Change-of-Guard ceremony, accompanied by military band displays, draws schoolchildren, tourists, and veterans.Wreath-laying ceremonies by the Prime Minister and senior officials are held here on important national occasions. The memorial reflects India’s effort to create a permanent space to honour its fallen soldiers.

Support to families

Beyond memorials, India also honours its soldiers through a strong welfare and support system for their families. This is both a moral responsibility and a form of social security for families who have lost a member in service.Families of martyrs receive central ex gratia payments, along with pension schemes that provide long-term financial support.Pensions for war-bereaved families are usually set at 100% of the soldier’s last drawn basic pay, along with other components, helping widows and children maintain financial stability.Additional support includes education allowances covering tuition and hostel fees for children, cashless medical care under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and benefits related to housing and small business support. Some state and central schemes also provide financial assistance for the marriage of daughters or remarriage of widows, along with interest subsidies on home loans to help families rebuild their lives.Employment support is another key measure, with the government reserving certain jobs for the next of kin of fallen soldiers.

Martyrs’ Day: Remembering Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev

On March 23, 1931, three young revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were executed, becoming enduring symbols of courage and defiance against British colonial rule. They had been sentenced to death in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. The spark for their action came after the brutal death of Lala Lajpat Rai. While leading a protest against the Simon Commission, Rai was beaten by Superintendent of Police J S Scott and later died of his injuries on 17th November 1928. Outraged, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Chandra Shekhar Azad plotted to avenge his death. In a case of mistaken identity, they shot another officer, Saunders, instead. Initially, the British were unaware of the culprits. It was only a handwritten poster by Bhagat Singh explaining the motive behind the killing that linked him and his comrades to Saunders’ death. Later, Bhagat Singh’s dramatic protest in the Central Legislative Assembly on 8th April 1929, where he threw a bomb against two oppressive bills, brought him to the authorities’ attention. Even facing execution, the three showed no fear. They walked to the gallows at Lahore Central Jail with pride, shouting “Inquilab zindabad.” Bhagat Singh famously sang Mera Rang De Basanti Chola- “O mother! Dye my robe the colour of spring,” turning his death into a celebration of freedom rather than despair. Despite appeals for clemency and widespread public support, the three were executed, leaving a lasting legacy. Today, Martyrs’ Day is a tribute to their bravery, self-sacrifice, and patriotism. Their courage continues to inspire generations of Indians.Martyrs’ Day, therefore, is a reminder of the cost of freedom and the responsibility of every citizen. It honours those who fought for the nation and inspires people to uphold the values of courage, commitment, and selflessness.

NEW DELHI: The Employees Provident Fund Organisation is focusing on getting subscribers to withdraw unclaimed money lying in inoperative accounts.Nearly a quarter of the inoperative accounts, which are Aadhaar verified, may soon get cleared of the idle balances as the EPFO is working to develop an auto-settlement facility which will allow account holders to receive the unclaimed money in their bank accounts without filing for claims, an official told TOI. The facility is slated to deal with nearly 8.1 lakh Aadhaar verified inoperative accounts, amounting to Rs 5,200 crore, of which nearly 14,000 have more than Rs 5 lakh lying unclaimed. Another 38,000 Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts have Rs 1-5 lakh lying unclaimed, and 41,000 accounts have between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh. “In the last meeting, the central board of trustees (CBT) cleared auto-settlement of such inoperative accounts, with an unclaimed balance of Rs 1,000 or less, to registered bank accounts. Based on the learnings from this project, a separate initiative is planned to design a strategy for other accounts. Members who joined after Oct 2017 will be given priority,” the official said. An inoperative account in EPFO is one that has stopped earning interest and mainly belongs to members who have retired after 55 years of age and no contribution is made for three years. However, for those under 55 years, the account will keep earning interest until the subscriber turns 58. As of Feb 2026, there were 31.8 lakh inoperative accounts, with Rs 10,181 crore lying unclaimed. Of these, nearly 7 lakh accounts are older than 20 years, while 1.8 lakh are between 10-20 years old.
