‘Cultural insensitivity’: Mamata slams PM Modi over ‘Swami’ prefix to Ramakrishna’s name

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday launched a scathing attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for adding an “unprecedented and improper prefix” to Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsadeva’s name while paying tributes on his birth anniversary.Mamata accused the Prime Minister of “aggressively displaying his cultural insensitivity to great figures of Bengal.”

“Yet again, our Prime Minister aggressively displays his cultural insensitivity to great figures of Bengal. Today is the janmatithi of Yugavatara (God’s incarnation in our age) Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsadeva. While trying to hail the great saint on this occasion, our PM added an unprecedented and improper prefix to the great saint’s name, ‘Swami’!” Mamata said in a social media post on X.“As is well known, Sri Ramakrishna was widely revered as Thakur (literally, God). While his ascetic disciples constituted the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission after their Master’s demise, and those monks were then called ‘Swami’ as per Indian traditions, the Master, the Acharya, himself continued to be referred to as Thakur. The prefix ‘Swami’ was meant for his disciples in the Ramakrishna Order; but the holy trinity of the Order remained Thakur–Ma–Swamiji. Thakur is Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsadeva, Ma is Ma Sarada, and Swamiji is Swami Vivekananda,” she added.Earlier in the day, PM Modi paid tributes to Swami Ramakrishna Paramahansa on his birth anniversary and said his noble thoughts will forever remain a source of inspiration.“Humble tributes to Swami Ramakrishna Paramahansa on his birth anniversary. The way he established spirituality and meditation as a vital life force will continue to benefit humanity in every era. His noble thoughts and messages will forever remain a source of inspiration,” Modi said in a post on X in Hindi.Ramakrishna Paramahansa was born on this day in 1836.Ramakrishna Paramahansa, who served as a priest at Kolkata’s Dakshineswar Kali Temple, is known for his teachings on the harmony of religions. The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission were brought into existence by Sri Ramakrishna and his chief disciple, Swami Vivekananda. The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are worldwide, non-political, non-sectarian spiritual organisations that have been engaged in various forms of humanitarian and social service activities for more than a century.

‘Give AI an open sky, but ...’: PM Modi hails AI, flags caution — top quotes

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed India’s growth in the field of artificial intelligence as he joined world leaders, heads of state, and global tech leaders at the AI Impact Summit. While giving his keynote address, PM Modi said that AI needs to be democratised to ensure hat humans don’t become a data point or raw material.

‘A Very Positive Case Study’: Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang Praises India’s AI Startup Ecosystem

Here are the top quotes from PM Modi’s address

  • We have seen the destruction of nuclear power and its positive contribution too. Similarly, AI is also a transformative power. If it gets directionless, then it results in disruption and if gets in the right direction, then it results in solution. How to make AI human centric from machine centric, how to make sensitive and accountable – this is the main purpose of this Global AI Impact Summit.”
  • India sees a strong future in AI. We have the talent, energy capacity, and policy clarity. I am pleased to inform you all that at this summit, three Indian companies have launched their AI models and apps. These models showcase the talent of our youth. I invite you all to design and develop in India, deliver to the world, humanity.
  • We are entering an era where humans and intelligent systems co-create, co-work and co-evolve.
  • Decades ago, when the internet started, no one could have imagined how many jobs it would create. The same is true for AI. Today, it is difficult to imagine what kind of jobs will be created in this field in the future. The future of work in AI is not predefined. It will depend on our decisions, our course and course of action. I believe the future of work is a new opportunity for us. This is the era of humans and intelligent systems working together.
  • Today at the New Delhi AI Impact Summit, I present the MANAV Vision for AI. MANAV means human, and MANAV Vision says M- moral and ethical systems: AI should be based on ethical guidance. A- accountable governance means transparent rules, robust oversight; N- national sovereignty means whose data, his right. A- accessible and inclusive means AI should be a multiplier, not a monopoly. V- valid and legitimate means AI should be lawful and verifiable. This MANAV vision of India will become an important link for the welfare of humanity in the AI-based world of the 21st century.
  • We have to be more cautious regarding children’s safety. The AI space should also be child safe and family guided.
  • Let us pledge to develop AI as a global common good. A crucial need today is to establish global standards. Deepfakes and fabricated content are destabilising the open society. In the digital world, content should also have authenticity labels so people know what’s real and what’s created with AI. As AI creates more text, images, and video, the industry increasingly needs watermarking and clear-source standards. Therefore, it’s crucial that this trust is built into the technology from the start.
  • For AI, humans are just data points. To ensure that humans are not reduced to mere raw material, AI must be democratised. It must be made a medium for inclusion and empowerment, especially in the Global South. We must give AI an open sky and also keep the command in our hands, like GPS. GPS shows us the way, but the final call on which direction we should go is ours. The direction in which we take AI today will determine our future.
  • The pace with which the world’s youth are embracing AI and taking ownership of it is commendable. There is tremendous enthusiasm among young people for the AI Summit.
  • AI is a transformative power. If directionless, it becomes a disruption; if the right direction is found, it becomes a solution. How to make AI from machine-centric to human-centric, how to make it sensitive and responsive, this is the basic objective of this Global AI Impact Summit. The theme of this summit clearly reflects the perspective from which India views AI. Welfare of all, the happiness of all. This is our benchmark.
  • We must make skilling, reskilling, and lifelong learning a mass movement. The future of work will be inclusive, trusted, and human-centric. If we move forward together, artificial intelligence will elevate the potential of humanity.
  • We have to have a big vision and shoulder an equally big responsibility. Along with the present generation, we also have to worry about what form of AI we will hand over to the coming generations. Therefore, the real question today is not what Artificial Intelligence can do in the future. The question is, what do we do with Artificial Intelligence in the present? Such questions have come before humanity before. The most powerful example is nuclear power. We have seen its destruction and its positive contribution has also been seen.
  • I welcome you all to the most historic AI Summit of the world. India is the centre of the world’s largest tech pool. It is a matter of pride for the Global South that the AI summit is being organised in India.
  • When signals were first transmitted wirelessly, no one imagined that the entire world would one day be connected in real time. Artificial Intelligence is such a transformation of human history. What we are seeing today, what we are predicting, is just the beginning of its impact.
  • AI is making machines intelligent, but more than that, it is increasing human capabilities manyfold. There is only one difference: this time the speed is unprecedented and the scale is also unexpected. Earlier, the impact of technology used to take decades to be visible. Today, the journey from machine learning to learning machines is faster, deeper and wider than ever.

Lapsed 5% Muslim quota in Maha formally nullified | India News

Lapsed 5% Muslim quota in Maha formally nullified
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai: Eleven years after the BJP-Sena govt led by Devendra Fadnavis scrapped the 5% Muslim quota in govt jobs and education, the Mahayuti govt has cancelled a circular outlining the process of issuing caste validity certificates for the quota. Officials said the long-delayed process was completed after a query was raised in the last state assembly session. The 5% minority quota had been introduced by the Congress-NCP govt led in June 2014. However, the ordinance lapsed by Dec 2014 since it had not been converted into an Act under the subsequent BJP-Sena govt led by Fadnavis. A high court petition also led to a stay on the quota for jobs. In March 2015, the Fadnavis govt issued an order officially cancelling the ordinance. However, a related circular on caste validity certificates for minorities issued by the social justice department was overlooked. It is this circular which has now been cancelled. “This is just a formality,” said an official.

Autopsy hinting rape ignored, Bombay HC asks CBI to probe 2010 death | India News

Autopsy hinting rape ignored, Bombay HC asks CBI to probe 2010 death

Mumbai: The Bombay HC recently transferred to the CBI a probe into a 2010 accidental death case of a 13-year-old schoolgirl, saying police did not consider the autopsy report that said in the last 24 hours before her death, she was subjected to sexual intercourse. Police relied on an incomplete video recording and statement of doctors who had not seen the postmortem, HC said. It found “too many loose ends” in the death of the girl, and said cops “did not even consider the serious possibility of the offence being rape with murder”. School had taken students for a camp near Tungareshwar forest. They were playing in a stream and a teacher asked them to come out as the flow got stronger. All except the girl got out. She was carried away, said prosecution, and later her unclothed body was found. “No probe was carried out from that angle at all. Not finding clothes on the body was also an important aspect which needed to be probed seriously,” said a division bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and Sandesh Patil, in a Feb 10 order.

‘Electronic service valid under BNSS’: Bombay HC upholds summons via WhatsApp | India News

'Electronic service valid under BNSS': Bombay HC upholds summons via WhatsApp

NAGPUR: In a ruling clarifying the legal status of electronic communication in criminal proceedings, the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court last week held that summons issued through WhatsApp is legally valid under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and set aside an order imposing costs on a police personnel for effecting such service,.Justice Urmila Joshi-Phalke quashed a Jan 21 order of a Pocso court in Nagpur which directed recovery of costs from constable Santosh Ramteke on the ground that summons served through a mobile phone was “not allowed”. The court faulted the trial court for ignoring amended provisions under BNSS.The Pocso court noted that two prosecution witnesses in a pending case were absent and that the summons was served via mobile phone, resulting in delay in recording evidence. The court imposed costs on the constable for not serving the summons through a “legal mode”. The Maharashtra govt challenged the trial court order, filing a criminal plea on behalf of Lakadganj police station. The state argued that the trial court overlooked BNSS section 70 under which electronically served summons are deemed legally valid, and section 530 which permits trials, inquiries and proceedings, including service of summons, to be conducted in electronic mode.Justice Joshi-Phalke observed that the purpose of service is to put a person on notice and that “the mode is surely irrelevant”.
