Fans erupt as Lungi Ngidi’s four-wicket burst powers South Africa to a dominant win against Canada in T20 World Cup 2026

The Narendra Modi Stadium bore witness to a clinical exhibition of T20 cricket on February 09, 2026, as South Africa dismantled Canada by 57 runs in their Group D clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. While the Proteas’ batters set the stage with a towering total, it was a ferocious opening spell from Lungi Ngidi that truly broke the Canadian spirit, sending fans into a frenzy and solidifying South Africa’s dominance in the tournament.

Aiden Markram and South African middle-order fireworks set a massive target Canada

Opting to assert authority early, South Africa’s top order came out firing. The Powerplay was a masterclass in aggressive accumulation, as Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock raced to 65/0 within the first six overs. Markram was particularly devastating, reaching a 28-ball half-century characterized by elegant drives and brutal pulls. Despite losing De Kock for 25, the momentum never wavered.

Ryan Rickelton added a brisk 33, but the real sting came in the final overs. Although Canada’s Ansh Patel managed a brave triple-strike to remove Markram (59), Rickelton, and Dewald Brevis in quick succession, he couldn’t stem the tide of the “Killer Miller” show. David Miller (39 off 23) and Tristan Stubbs (34 off 19) combined for an unbeaten 75-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Their late-inning onslaught, aided by a slow over-rate penalty against Canada in the final over, propelled South Africa to a massive 213/4.

Lungi Ngidi’s four-wicket haul takes South Africa to an emphatic win in T20 World Cup 2026

The Canadian chase was effectively over before it began, thanks to a masterclass in seam bowling from Ngidi. Charging in under the lights, Ngidi struck with the very first ball of the innings, removing Canadian captain Dilpreet Bajwa for a golden duck. He didn’t stop there; in a frantic opening burst, Ngidi dismantled the top order, claiming Yuvraj Samra and Nicholas Kirton to leave Canada reeling at 26/3 within three overs.

While Navneet Dhaliwal played a lone hand of defiance, scoring a gritty 64 off 49 balls, he found little support at the other end. Ngidi returned to provide the finishing touch to his spell, dismissing Harsh Thaker to finish with stellar figures of 4/31.

Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada provided excellent support, ensuring Canada never gained the required run-rate momentum. This victory sends a loud message to the rest of Group D: the Proteas possess both the batting depth to post 200+ scores and a bowling spearhead in Ngidi capable of winning matches in the first six balls.

Mohammed Shami, Ishan Kishan among five players dropped from BCCI central contracts | Cricket News

Mohammed Shami, Ishan Kishan among five players dropped from BCCI central contracts
Mohammed Shami and Ishan Kishan (X-Cricbuzz)

Several familiar names have been left out as the BCCI announced its central contracts for the 2025–26 season on Monday, with Mohammed Shami, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Mukesh Kumar and Ishan Kishan missing out despite being part of the previous cycle. The Board awarded annual retainers to 30 men and 21 women cricketers, categorising them into Groups A, B and C. Notably, the A+ category has been scrapped, a move that has reshaped the contract hierarchy.

T20 World Cup Groups Explained: Who Can Reach the Super 8

Senior stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been placed in Group B, a downgrade that was largely expected following their retirement from Tests and T20Is respectively, effectively making them one-format players. Under the current criteria, which factors in performances and the number of matches played in the preceding season, they were no longer eligible for the top bracket. For the first time in his career, Shubman Gill finds himself in the highest pay grade, as the two-format captain was retained in Group A alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. While the BCCI has not officially disclosed the retainership amounts, Group A was previously valued at Rs 5 crore annually, with Group B and C fetching Rs 3 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively before the A+ category was abolished. The decision to do away with A+ stems from the fact that Bumrah is now the only player who remains an automatic selection across all formats. The category, introduced during the COA era for all-format excellence, previously featured only Kohli, Rohit, Jadeja and Bumrah. The men’s list has been trimmed from 34 to 30 players, with Shami’s exclusion seen as a strong signal that he may be out of the selectors’ immediate plans. Kishan, Mukesh and Sarfaraz were also dropped after failing to play a single international match during the evaluation period. While Kishan has returned to the T20I setup, that comeback falls in the new cycle. One notable inclusion is Sai Sudharsan, the only new entrant in the senior men’s contract list. On the women’s side, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma retained their Group A status, while Jemimah Rodrigues earned a promotion following her standout World Cup performances.

Industry split, govt reviews import policy on refurbished med devices

Industry split, govt reviews import policy on refurbished med devices

NEW DELHI: As India pushes ahead with bilateral trade agreements, the issue of importing refurbished medical equipment has emerged as a contentious flashpoint in the medical devices sector. Domestic players have warned against easing restrictions, flagging patient safety risks and concerns over unfair competition, while MNCs are advocating a globally-aligned framework to allow wider access to refurbished devices under stringent regulatory oversight.Recently, the health ministry constituted a committee to frame a policy for imported refurbished med devices, raising concerns among domestic players. Industry sources said the debate has intensified alongside India-US trade talks. “The push has come into sharper focus as India negotiates a trade deal with US, which could include market access for such med devices over next few years,” they told TOI.Total imports of medical devices last year stood at Rs 76,000 crore. Of this, Rs 48,000 crore are med electronics, with an estimated one-third being illegal pre-owned medical equipment. Such imports without any regulatory oversight have been ongoing for years, industry experts told TOI.Domestic industry body, Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AiMeD) has opposed the move to relax policy restrictions on importing refurbished medical equipment, saying its highly unsafe for patients in the absence of inadequate calibration.“In case of locally-made devices, refurbished imports should only be allowed with a robust, enforceable regulatory framework benchmarked to global standards. Refurbished devices pose risks from unknown histories, inconsistent performance, limited traceability, and shortened lifespans. India must prioritise new, indigenously-manufactured devices under ‘Make in India’, and the Medical Devices Policy, rather than becoming a dumping ground for end-of-life equipment,” Rajiv Nath, Forum Coordinator, AiMeD said.Rival firm, Medical Technology Association of India welcomed the govt move. “As India actively pursues FTAs, we urge the adoption of a time-bound, globally aligned policy. Such a framework should permit the use of refurbished devices only when managed through original equipment manufacturers, ensuring clear legal accountability, robust service support and stringent patient safeguards,” its chairman Pavan Choudary said.BPL’s growth under PLI demands rejection of these imports, said Sunil Khurana, executive chairman, BPL Medical. “Allowing refurbished medical equipment without a globally benchmarked regulatory framework introduces unacceptable patient risk,” Sudhir Srivastav, CMD, SS Innovations, a robotic surgery firm, said.

T20 World Cup: Aiden Markram's fifty leads South Africa to 57-run win over Canada

Aiden Markram led South Africa with a sparkling half-century as the Proteas cruised to a 57-run victory over Canada in their opening Group D T20 World Cup clash on Monday. Batting first, Markram struck a rapid 59 off 32 balls, laced with 10 fours and a six, setting the tone for a commanding total. Quinton de Kock (25), Ryan Rickelton (33), Tristan Stubbs (34) and David Miller (39) also made crucial contributions as South Africa posted 213 for 4 in their 20 overs.

T20 World Cup Groups Explained: Who Can Reach the Super 8

Chasing 214, Canada never really got going, finishing at 156 for 8. Navneet Dhaliwal stood out with a valiant 64, while Harsh Thaker added 33, but the asking rate proved too steep for the visitors. Canada’s innings began on a disastrous note as captain Dilpreet Bajwa edged the very first ball from Lungi Ngidi (4/31) to de Kock. Dhaliwal and Yuvraj Samra briefly steadied the ship with 17 runs in two overs before Ngidi struck twice in the third over, dismissing Samra and Nicholas Kirton as Canada slumped to 26 for 3. A 69-run partnership between Dhaliwal and Thaker offered some resistance, but Marco Jansen (2/30) struck in the 18th over to seal the emphatic win. South Africa’s innings had been explosive from the start. Markram attacked Dilon Heyliger in the second over, while de Kock followed with two fours off Saad Bin Zafar, the pair putting on 70 runs for the opening wicket in just 6.5 overs. De Kock was eventually cleaned up by Bajwa, and Markram reached his fifty in the 10th over before falling to Ansh Patel at long-on. Rickelton followed soon after, giving Patel another wicket, and Dewald Brevis added to Canada’s woes, caught by Kirton. In the final overs, Miller and Stubbs accelerated brilliantly, putting together an unbeaten 75-run partnership from just 37 balls, with Miller clearing the ropes at will. For Canada, Ansh Patel was the standout bowler with 3/31.

Proxy advisory firm flags ‘crisis’ at Zee Ent, co rejects claims

Proxy advisory firm flags 'crisis' at Zee Ent, co rejects claims

MUMBAI: Shareholder advisory firm InGovern has turned up the heat on Zee Entertainment Enterprises, calling for the appointment of a professional managing director, a forensic audit of related-party transactions, and other governance reforms. InGovern said Zee is witnessing a deepening crisis of confidence, with promoters exercising substantial operational control despite holding a stagnant equity stake of less than 4%. The proxy advisory firm flagged what it described as a significant governance vacuum at the company. Although shareholders rejected Punit Goenka’s reappointment as a director in Nov 2024, he continues to lead the company as CEO, a move InGovern said effectively bypasses the shareholder mandate. InGovern also pointed out that the promoters, the Goenka family, have around Rs 500 crore in liquidity, enough to buy a 5% stake in Zee, but have chosen not to deploy it, calling such an investment “not meaningful”. “This contradicts standard confidence-building measures where promoter buying is typically seen as a positive signal,” the firm said. Responding to the report, a Zee spokesperson rejected the allegations, calling them “factually incorrect, misleading and prejudiced”. “The report consists of certain dated issues, which have already been addressed by the company,” the spokesperson said, adding that the absence of new points, coupled with “multiple factual inaccuracies, misrepresentation of facts and lack of basic diligence questions the intent of the firm behind the report”. The spokesperson added that the company issued a detailed rebuttal to InGovern in response to what it called “baseless allegations.”

Starbucks’ cold brews ride the protein wave

Starbucks' cold brews ride the protein wave

MUMBAI: Call it a fad or not, but brands are pushing protein-infused products into retail shelves-many Indians whose regular diets lack sufficient doses of protein are increasingly becoming health-conscious and companies are sniffing an opportunity here. Think about McDonald’s protein slices to go with burgers, local startup Phab’s protein bhel bars, or ITC’s high protein atta.American coffeehouse giant Starbucks doesn’t want to miss out on the trend that seems to be finding takers. The firm has started lacing cold foams with protein-for an extra Rs 50, people can get an additional layer of protein added to the cold foam that comes with iced drinks.

-

“It’s not a promo or one-time launch. It’s a menu architecture. We want to become a lifestyle brand where we can integrate seamlessly into consumers’ wellness.“Coffee is not just about getting a caffeine kick now and protein is no longer gym culture. It has become a daily routine,” Adrit Mishra, chief operating officer at Tata Starbucks told TOI.”A cup of iced coffee already includes anywhere between 20-25 grams of protein and topping it up with a protein-infused cold foam will give a consumer another 11-15 grams of protein depending on the portion size of the drink. Starbucks is also offering people the choice of cold foam with zero added sugar as Indians become more inclined towards cutting down on sugar levels. The product is targeted at consumers who are mindful of their health but do not want to compromise on their regular lifestyle, Mishra said. India has traditionally been a tea-drinking nation but coffee is now becoming more common in households and coffeehouses are propagating coffee culture. A cup of branded coffee is still aspirational for many and people are willing to get a dose of hot coffee while heading to work or drinking a cold brew after hitting the gym.Starbucks plans to extend the protein foam to hot brews as well in about six months or so besides exploring the idea of adding the feature to more categories going ahead, said Mishra. Outside India, the company has rolled out protein lattes and cold foam drinks only across its stores in the US and Canada. In India, Starbucks has partnered with home-grown D2C protein brand SuperYou for the launch across more than 500 stores here. Young working professionals, frequent travellers and consumers with a focused fitness regime have tried the protein cold foams, Mishra said.“Our airport stores are seeing good traction,” added Mishra. Protein in India is no longer a trend, people realise that it’s an important macronutrient and it’s also culturally relevant, said Nikunj Biyani, SuperYou’s co-founder.

Read, think, don't scroll: PM Modi recalls learning from TOI in Pariksha Pe Charcha

NEW DELHI: Long before smartphones, search engines and AI entered classrooms, PM Modi said one habit shaped his thinking as a student – reading the newspaper and discussing ideas. Recalling his school days, Modi told students that a teacher once gave him a daily task rooted in curiosity and discipline. “My teacher used to tell us daily, ‘Go to the library. In The Times of India, there is a sentence on the edit page – write that in your notebook and come,’ and the next day we used to discuss it,” he said, underlining the role of reading and reflection in learning. The PM was speaking during the second episode of the ninth edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026, where he interacted with students from Coimbatore, Raipur, Guwahati and Devmogra in Gujarat. Using personal anecdotes and simple examples, Modi urged students to build habits that strengthen thinking, rather than becoming dependent on shortcuts. Warning against overuse of technology, he said mobile phones have become “masters” for some children. “Some kids cannot even eat food unless they are watching a smartphone or television,” he observed. He said every era has faced fears over new technologies, but technology must not become the master of human life. On AI, Modi advised balance over blind dependence, saying AI should be used for guidance and value addition, not as a substitute for learning. He noted that nature of jobs will keep changing, just as transport once moved from carts to airplanes. The PM also shared practical tips for exams, stressing preparation and rest. He said a good night’s sleep keeps students cheerful and encouraged practising previous years’ papers and focusing on writing. He cautioned parents against encouraging comparisons at home, saying constant comparison creates pressure rather than motivation. On leadership, Modi said it begins with courage and initiative. Expressing happiness that students carry the dream of Viksit Bharat 2047, Modi said small habits build a developed nation. Launched in 2018, Pariksha Pe Charcha has grown into a major student engagement programme. The ninth edition, held this year, recorded participation from across the country, reflecting sustained student enthusiasm nationwide overall.

Suicide abetment chargesheet relies on voice recording of Pankaja Munde’s PA and his wife’s argument in which he abused her and provoked her by telling her to ‘die’ | Mumbai News

Mumbai: On November 22, 2025, BJP minister Pankaja Munde‘s personal assistant Anant Gajre got into an argument with his now-deceased dentist wife Gauri Palve on his phone, during which he allegedly abused her, blamed her for harming his reputation, and repeatedly provoked her by telling her to “die”, stated the chargesheet submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the abetment to suicide charges against him. The chargesheet also stated that both were heard discussing suicide. Police said Anant later forwarded the voice recording to Gauri’s phone with the intention of intimidating her and maligning her image.Last month, the SIT submitted the chargesheet against Anant (32) for allegedly abetting the suicide of his 27-year-old wife Gauri, who was found dead at their 30th floor flat of Navin BDD Chawl in Worli in November 2025. Police have given a clean chit to the two co-accused — Anant’s brother Ajay and sister Sheetal Gajre Andhale — citing lack of evidence.According to the chargesheet, a crucial piece of technical evidence in the case is a voice recording made by Anant which, investigators said, captured a heated argument between him and his wife shortly before her death. The chargesheet also relies on 17 voice messages sent by Gauri to a friend, in which she described the alleged torture by her husband who threatened to make the message viral. Police said Anant forwarded the same voice clips to Gauri’s phone, an act the probe describes as deliberate and aimed at intimidating her, exerting psychological pressure, and creating fear that the recording could be circulated further to malign her image. Investigators stated that this act formed a key link in establishing sustained mental harassment and intentional instigation, which they believe directly contributed to the deceased taking the extreme step.Police concluded that the accused’s actions amounted to deliberate instigation, pushing the deceased to commit suicide. Based on witness testimonies and technical evidence, police concluded that the accused had betrayed the marital relationship by continuously mentally and physically torturing Gauri and by concealing significant aspects of his past life from her.The transcripts of both the accused’s recording and the deceased’s voice messages were prepared under panchnama and have been included as documentary evidence in the chargesheet. Statements of the complainant and other witnesses also corroborate allegations that Anant subjected the deceased to sustained harassment. Police said the deceased took the extreme step fearing that the accused would circulate the recording among members of society, thereby damaging her reputation. The case was initially registered as an Accidental Death Report following Gauri’s death. An inquest panchnama was conducted before two government magistrates and the body was sent to Nair Hospital for post-mortem. The autopsy later confirmed death due to ligature compression of the neck, classified as an unnatural death.During the investigation, multiple forensic examinations were carried out at the scene of the incident. Several articles, including bedding, hair samples, cushion covers, blankets, and dust samples, were seized and sent to forensic laboratories for chemical analysis.
