India closer to becoming 2nd nation to re-fuel on-orbit satellite

BENGALURU: When OrbitAid’s 25-kg Ayulsat lifts off aboard Isro’s PSLV-C62 Monday, the mission’s success will bring India a step closer to becoming the second country in the world to demonstrate on-orbit satellite refuelling, a capability so far claimed only by China, reports Chethan Kumar. Last year, China carried out a similar demonstration, but details remain limited and official disclosures sparse. No other spacefaring nation, including the US, has publicly demonstrated the technology in orbit. However, US firm Astroscale is developing a refuelling technology but is yet to launch. Ayulsat won’t demonstrate a full on-orbit re-fuelling. It is designed as a target satellite to validate fuel transfer in the space environment. Unlike more complex servicing missions involving two spacecraft, OrbitAid’s first step focuses on internal refuelling within a single satellite, allowing engineers to study how fluids behave in microgravity under real orbital conditions. OrbitAid founder and CEO Sakthikumar R told TOI the first refuelling is expected to take place within four hours of launch.

Shah wants ‘neutral’ Sabarimala probe | India News

Shah wants 'neutral' Sabarimala probe

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union home minister Amit Shah demanded Sunday Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan‘s resignation and warned of statewide BJP protests unless a “neutral probe” is ordered into an alleged gold heist linked to Sabarimala hill shrine. “It is time for CM Pinarayi Vijayan to go, as LDF could not safeguard Sabarimala and also could not bring development to the state,” Shah said, addressing party workers at a felicitation function for BJP winners in local body polls in Thiruvananthapuram. He said the FIR in the case was “designed to protect the real culprits” and questioned how justice could be ensured “when ministers are involved”. The alleged gold heist linked to Sabarimala in Pathanamthitta district has triggered political accusations, with BJP claiming a cover-up and seeking a probe independent of Kerala police. Left Democratic Front (LDF) govt denies wrongdoing. According to the state-appointed SIT, gold embedded in sacred structures was allegedly stripped, diverted and converted in 2015 through a planned operation involving temple officials, intermediaries and private jewellers. Setting the tone for BJP’s campaign ahead of the 2026 Kerala assembly elections, Shah predicted a breakthrough. “The lotus will bloom in the state as BJP will assume office in 2026,” he said. “Our aim is to develop Kerala, to protect the state from anti-nationals, and safeguard the centuries-old devotion of the people.” He accused both LDF and Congress-led opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) of “match-fixing” that led to stagnation. “Communist parties are wiped out from the entire world and Congress has been wiped out in India. The path to development of Kerala is with NDA under the leadership of Modi-ji,” Shah said, linking Kerala’s future to PM Narendra Modi’s goal of a developed India by 2047. Citing BJP’s growth, Shah said vote share rose from 16% in 2019 to 20% in 2024 and claimed the jump to “30% to 40%” would come in 2026. “I am confident that BJP state president Rajiv Chandrasekhar can end this musical chair by LDF and UDF,” he said. Drawing parallels with other states, Shah listed BJP’s rise from marginal presence to govt in Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and UP. “Today we have a mayor in Thiruvananthapuram, and tomorrow we will see a CM,” he said.

Ladki Bahin payout on civic poll eve sparks Maharashtra storm
Shiv Sena UBT president Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, held their first rally for the BMC polls on Sunday at the historic Shivaji Park ground, where Shiv Sena was founded.

NAGPUR: Maharashtra govt’s decision to credit Mukhyamantri-Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana instalments for Dec 2025 and Jan 2026 to beneficiaries’ accounts on Jan 14, the eve of municipal polls, has become a flashpoint between BJP-led Mahayuti and opposition Congress. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) moved state election commission (SEC), objecting to govt’s decision to credit two months’ instalments, totalling Rs 3,000, barely 24 hours before the civic polls. It termed the release plan a “collective govt bribe”, accusing it of violating model code of conduct to influence over 1 crore women voters. The party urged the commission to direct govt to release the funds only after polling concludes. Revenue minister and Nagpur district guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Sunday dismissed Congress’s objections as political opportunism, asserting that women beneficiaries could not be held hostage to election schedules as the Ladki Bahin scheme predated the announcement of civic polls and had “nothing to do with municipal elections”. “This is an ongoing welfare programme of the state govt. For polls in 29 civic bodies, women across the entire state cannot be deprived of their rightful benefits,” he told a press conference, adding any attempt to stall payments would amount to discrimination against women. Bawankule accused Congress of hypocrisy and obstructionism. “When this govt launched the scheme, Congress tried everything to stop it. Former MPCC president Nana Patole attempted to derail the scheme by encouraging a petition in the high court,” he alleged. “With nearly 2.5 crore beneficiaries, stopping payments because of elections would cause real hardship. Welfare cannot be switched on and off for political convenience,” Bawankule said. Nagpur BJP city president Dayashankar Tiwari called it an exposure of Congress’s “anti-women mindset”.

NEW DELHI: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday questioned the BJP-led Centre’s nationalist credentials, accusing it of inviting Chinese companies to invest in India despite security concerns following Operation Sindoor, and of remaining silent over what he described as repeated insults by US President Donald Trump.Addressing a rally for AIMIM candidates contesting the January 15 Jalna Municipal Corporation elections, Owaisi alleged that China had supplied arms to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, launched after the Pahalgam terror attack. He claimed that nearly 80 per cent of Pakistan’s military equipment was sourced from China and said, “Despite this, the Indian government is inviting Chinese companies to invest in the country.”He also accused the BJP leadership of failing to respond to Trump’s public remarks on India. “US President Trump has been repeatedly insulting and mocking India. However, the BJP leadership has remained silent. Where has its nationalism gone?” Owaisi asked. There was no immediate response from the government or the BJP to his allegations.Owaisi further criticised the Centre’s decision to grant asylum to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after her ouster, questioning why Indian Muslims were often branded as Bangladeshis while Hasina was given refuge in India. He also raised concerns over the prolonged incarceration of Muslim youth without trial, saying denial of bail violated Article 21 of the Constitution. The AIMIM chief accused the Congress of enabling extended detention without bail through amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, holding it responsible for the continued imprisonment of student activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.On Friday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the Centre over reports of easing curbs on Chinese companies and over Trump’s comments on India’s ties with Russia.

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu says: AI reduces need for junior engineers, but then …

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has shared concerns about how artificial intelligence (AI) may change the structure of software teams. Sharing a post on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), Vembu said that AI is making senior software architects more productive, but at the same time it is also reducing the need for junior engineers. This shift, he warns, could impact how future architects are trained. In the post, Sridhar Vembu further writes that senior architects today need to understand both technical requirements and the full technology stack to guide AI tools effectively and refine their output. “AI makes senior architects more productive and reduces the need for junior engineers,” he writes in the post, adding “The architect needs to understand the requirements as well as the technology stack well, to be able to guide the AI and fine tune its output”.“But if we don’t have junior engineers, we don’t get to train the next generation of architects – after all how does someone become a software architect without being a junior engineer first? I am still thinking through how this gets resolved,” he further says.Vembu’s comments reflect a broader debate in the technology sector, where AI tools such as coding assistants and autonomous agents are increasingly taking over tasks that were traditionally assigned to junior engineers. Experts have raised concerns about AI’s potential to reshape how technical careers begin.

Sridhar Vembu’s post triggers discussion

Vembu’s post has triggered discussion among engineers and social media users. Replying to his post, one user writes: “We still have some programmers who understand assembly languages. I think there will always be some engineers who would want to dig deeper. I think demand will play its role.” “Change the career ladder, not the headcount. Keep juniors, but redefine their role: AI-augmented engineers, not manual coders. Move juniors earlier into design, reviews, system thinking, and trade-off discussions while AI handles boilerplate,” suggested another. “With AI, all the unsolved problems of the intermittent steps become viable business problems. Hence new markets open to entrepreneurs for those middle step problems. Thats how we will see waves of new age entrepreneurs with many solopreneurs,” a third user commented.

‘What is the problem?’: Tej Pratap renews Bharat Ratna push for Lalu; will invite CM Nitish for ‘choora-dahi bhoj’

NEW DELHI: Janshakti Janta Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav on Sunday reiterated his demand for conferring the Bharat Ratna on former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, saying he would formally write to the Government of India to press the demand.“He should indeed be given Bharat Ratna. What is the problem? I will also write a letter to the Govt of India, on behalf of JJD, for the Bharat Ratna,” Tej Pratap Yadav said while speaking to reporters. His remarks came a day after he backed a social media post by his sister Rohini Acharya, saying her comments were accurate. “What she has tweeted is correct. I support her tweet…Everyone knows who she is talking about. I need not say it aloud,” he said, without elaborating further.Responding to questions on whether Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar would be invited to his traditional ‘choora-dahi bhoj’, Tej Pratap Yadav said he planned to invite everyone. “I will go everywhere. Why are you restless? I will invite you as well. I am inviting everyone,” he said.He also commented on the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, welcoming the reconstruction of the temple. “It is good that the temple has been reconstructed. I am also going to construct a Shiv temple very soon,” he said. The renewed demand for Bharat Ratna for Lalu Prasad Yadav comes amid recent political chatter around the country’s highest civilian honour, following awards conferred in 2024 on former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, and former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur.
