Ajinkya Rahane said on Cricbuzz: “However much we talk about Virat Kohli is never enough. But I have seen him very closely, how he goes about his batting. We talk about his passion and his intent each and every time. But I feel for me what stands out is his attitude. Attitude of learning, attitude of never giving up. People outside think Virat is arrogant, but he is not. He gets into the zone.”

NEW DELHI: Our battle with toxic air across cities is showing up sharply in medical bills. Sales of respiratory medicines, including anti-allergics and anti-asthma therapies, surged past Rs 1,950 crore in Dec 2025, the highest monthly level ever, signalling a troubling escalation in pollution-linked illnesses. The Dec sales were 10% higher than the corresponding month in 2024, and over 18% more compared with 2023, figures culled from market research firm Pharmarack showed, indicating a consistent increase each year. For the Oct-Dec quarter, the period when pollution typically peaks, sales rose in tandem, by 14% year-on-year over 2024, and by 8% over 2023. During the quarter, respiratory therapy sales crossed Rs 5,620 crore, a rise of 17% over the previous quarter. A majority under this therapy – nearly Rs 3,500 crore – was contributed by anti-asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) medication.

Further, Foracort, the medication used for asthma and respiratory issues, is among the top selling drugs during the winter months, mirroring the trend. In Dec, it was the second largest selling drug with sales of Rs 90 crore, following weight-loss therapy, Mounjaro. Overall, the domestic pharma market is estimated at Rs 2.4 lakh crore annually. Exposure to air pollution can aggravate asthma and respiratory infections, and can even lead to serious issues like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, medical experts say. “With rise in suspended particles in the air, allergic rhinitis and bronchitis patients increase by about 60% in the daily outpatient (department). Use of masks and air purifiers does help to a great extent especially in susceptible individuals. As far as treatment is considered, use of steroid inhalers as well as anti-allergics forms the backbone,” Amitabh Malik, head of department – ENT, Paras Health in Gurgaon, told TOI. Other widely-used therapies during these months include Augmentin (marketed by GSK Pharma) and Paracetamol (pain and fever management). A GSK Pharma India executive said, “The Oct to Feb period typically coincides with a seasonal rise in upper respiratory infections. This leads to increased demand for related medications during these months. Poor air quality is purported to be a contributing factor, particularly in the rise of allergic rhinitis and respiratory symptoms like cough and cold.” Significantly, the trend is visible across zones – with north and south similar in sales, the data noted. “Multiple regions recorded a double-digit month-on-month growth, indicating that winter triggered ailments are no longer a seasonal fluctuation but air pollution in winter months makes it an escalating public health trigger,” Pharmarack noted in its Nov update.

Mumbai: While granting bail to a woman helper who allegedly hurt a junior kindergarten student of a Mumbai school while washing her in the toilet, Bombay high court recently said schools must train its employees who are in direct contact with young children to be careful and cautious while doing such duties.“The school and its employees, vested with the duty of looking after small children such as the young girl here, must take sufficient care and ensure that such physical touch is avoided at all costs. If at all in unavoidable circumstances, they are required to touch a child in her private part, the same should be done with extreme sensitivity and care,” said Justice Neela Gokhale on Dec 19. After returning from school, the girl complained to her mother of a burning sensation while passing urine. Upon coaxing, she said “a nanny (sic)” hurt her when she had gone to the toilet. An hospital’s report mentioned “alleged sexual assault based on history and examination due to fingering.” The helper was arrested on Sept 16 and booked for rape and under POCSO for aggravated sexual assault. The Dindoshi sessions court rejected her bail application.Her advocate C K Talekar said the medical report does not indicate she committed any offence. She was not present on the day the incident is alleged. Two other “ayahs (sic)” took the girl to the toilet on that day. On Dec 10, Justice Gokhale requested investigating officer, API Suvidha Pallelly, to get the minor’s version independently. From the video-graphed interview, she noted “it appears that the redness and scratch was caused by a finger ring worn by the applicant…” The girl said the helper’s finger ring hurt her.“As far as the nanny is concerned, she does not prima facie appear to have committed any offence, however, she lacked sensitivity while helping young children wash themselves after urinating and she was doing her job quite rashly,” said Justice Gokhale.Shown a video by the mother’s advocate Saili Dhuru, she said “it does appear the child is hurt…” However at his stage, it cannot be said the act constitutes offences alleged. Considering the totality of the circumstances and that the helper has “2 children, who are alone”, Justice Gokhale released her on Rs 35,000/- personal bond with stringent conditions including that she “shall not take up any employment involving care of minor children in any school or organisation during pendency of the trial.“
