However, concerns over global and India-specific developments continued to dominate investor thinking. “The market has turned distinctly weak, weighed down by a series of India-specific and global geopolitical events. Geopolitical developments in Venezuela, the crisis in Iran and Trump’s threats regarding Greenland are also being viewed by the markets with concern,” said VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments. Meanwhile, Asian markets offered some relief, with South Korea’s Kospi, China’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng trading higher, while US markets closed in positive territory on Friday. NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking directions for the registration of an FIR against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banarjee, the DGP and the Kolkata police commissoner for “obstructing probe, tampering with and destroying evidence in a multi-state money laundering case against I-PAC”.Asserting the requirement for an FIR, the anti-money laundering agency said “protectors of law became party to a serious cognizable offence” as they “intimidated and threatened ED officers and snatched files and electronic evidence containing incriminating material.”

The central probe agency also said it had approached the Calcutta high court for the CBI probe into the incident but “the clout enjoyed by the CM and her supproters was used to create a ruckus in the courtroom forcing the judge to adjourn hearing”.The ED on Saturday moved the apex court alleging interference and obstruction by the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government during search operations at the Kolkata headquarters of political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee(I-PAC) and the residence of its director Pratik Jain. Later, the state government filed a caveat seeking to be heard before any adverse order is passed.The Bengal government’s caveat was filed after the ED carried out searches on Thursday at I-PAC’s office and Jain’s residence as part of a money laundering probe linked to an alleged multi-crore rupee coal pilferage scam. A caveat allows a party to ensure that no order is issued without giving it an opportunity to present its case.The ED has alleged that chief minister Mamata Banerjee entered the raid locations and took away what it described as “key” evidence, including physical documents and electronic devices. Banerjee has rejected the allegations and accused the central agency of overreach.The entire controversy erupted after CM Mamata Banerjee rushed to the house of I-PAC director Pratik Jain amid the raid and accused the Centre of holding political vendetta, alleging that central agencies were being misused ahead of elections.Reacting sharply to the action, Banerjee questioned the role of the ED and Union home minister Amit Shah. She claimed that party documents and data were being seized under the pretext of investigations. She also alleged that voter names were being deleted in West Bengal during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise, linking the moves to the election process.

It also identified US Vice President JD Vance as his deputy.

However, the image appeared doctored, as no official documentation or legal framework exists indicating that the US president holds any governing role in Venezuela as of now.The controversial post comes amid major political and military developments in Venezuela following a US-led operation that resulted in the capture of former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained during a US military operation in Caracas and flown to New York.The pair are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and face federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged cooperation with gangs designated by the US as terrorist organisations. Maduro, however, has denied the allegations.US officials told CBS News that the operation was carried out by the US Army’s Delta Force following months of military build-up in the region, including the deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and other naval assets in the Caribbean.Following Maduro’s removal, Venezuela’s vice president and oil minister, Delcy Rodríguez, was formally sworn in last week as the country’s interim president. Rodríguez, a 56-year-old lawyer and senior figure within the ruling political movement, took the oath before the National Assembly, which is headed by her brother, Jorge Rodríguez.A total of 283 lawmakers elected in parliamentary elections held in May were also sworn in. Most opposition parties boycotted the vote, leaving the legislature dominated by pro-government figures. The only lawmaker absent from the ceremony was Cilia Flores, who remains in US custody, Reuters reported.Earlier, in a statement made in Washington, US President Trump said that the United States would “run” Venezuela temporarily during a transition period and would “get the oil flowing”. US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the US military was studying “very strong options” for a potential military action against Iran, amid reports of deadly crackdowns against the country’s mounting anti-government protests.Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump suggested Iran may have crossed a red line he had previously set regarding the killing of protesters. “They’re starting to, it looks like,” he said when asked if that line had been crossed.“Some people, who were not supposed to be killed, have been killed… If you talk about leaders, I don’t know if they are leaders or just rule through violence… But we and the military are looking at it very seriously, and we are looking at some very strong options…We’ll make a determination,” he added.Trump’s comments came as nationwide protests against Iran’s leadership entered their third week. Demonstrators once again filled the streets of Tehran and Mashhad, the country’s two largest cities, amid escalating violence. GURGAON: The road to justice can be long. This one cut through nearly 500 villages in Haryana and UP in a search that took five months and burnt more than 10,000km worth of fuel.This was a search to find Anil, a man accused of kidnapping a teenager, making him work as a bonded labourer and torturing him. It began last July after the boy – frail and maimed – was found by locals in Badoli village of Palwal.The 15-year-old has his left arm missing. He was dumped in the middle of nowhere and told to go. Anil, a dairy and water was all he could remember of his captor. He had one more piece of information, that Anil had two daughters, Riya and Siya.Locals alerted police and a PCR van took him to hospital in Nuh. When he was being prepared for surgery, he escaped barefoot and without clothes. In acute pain, the boy climbed into a hilly area and reached Tauru in Nuh and took shelter at a deserted bus stop late at night. He walked back towards Nuh city, where a teacher found him, took him to a local health centre and informed police. His family in Bihar’s Kishanganj was contacted.It took a while for the boy to get over his trauma and reveal his ordeal. “The victim was so traumatised he didn’t initially reveal what happened to him to Palwal or Nuh police,” a Govt Railway Police (GRP) source said. “It was only after a local newspaper in Rohtak published a report about his plight that we got the alert at Bahadurgarh.”GRP filed a case under 75, 79 of Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Act, 2015 and under BNS sections 118(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons or means), 125 (rashness or negligence that endanger human life or personal safety), 127(4) (wrongful confinement for ten days or more), 137 (kidnapping), 146 (unlawful compulsory labour), 289 ( negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 3(5) (act done by multiple persons) because the boy had gone missing from Bahadurgarh railway station in Jhajjar on May 27.He had got off to find water, wandered too far, and missed his train, Farakka Express, that he was taking from Jind to his native place with his father and brother.When the GRP unit gleaned the details, they were shaken. They learnt the boy’s left arm was shredded in a fodder-cutter and the severed limb was thrown into a waterbody. Soon after the accident, the bleeding minor was driven for hours along highways and then left to cope on his own in Haryana. The captor had not taken him to hospital, just left him there with Rs 7,500 in cash.The boy left his Kishanganj home to work in Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. But when he wished to come back, his father Rishidev and brother Kailash went to Kangra to bring him back. They were on their way to Kishanganj in Farakka Express when the boy separated from them when he got off at Bahadurgarh.On July 29, Rishidev got a call from Nuh police, saying his son had been admitted at PGI Rohtak the next day. “We were devastated to see him in such a miserable condition. He told me that his employer and his family didn’t give him proper food or let him wear slippers,” Rishidev said in his police statement.By Nov, the boy had undergone three surgeries. But the search for Anil went nowhere. The family lost hope and took him back to Kishanganj.The GRP unit, however, did not quit. They had determined they would do whatever they could to get justice to a boy no one really was looking out for.While he recovered, GRP officials had begun reaching out to sarpanches with the clues they had – dairy owner Anil, two daughters Riya and Siya. They began with Haryana districts, mapped out possible areas based on his description of a waterbody. Initially, the search focused on villages around stormwater drains. Parallelly, GRP approached the Haryana education department, CBSE and other state boards to scan enrolment records for any Anil with daughters Riya and Siya. This digital sweep zeroed in on 20 potential matches. Cops visited every single one of them, but none owned a dairy.A breakthrough eventually came during one of the searches in Nov, an official recalled, when the boy was accompanying a GRP team in Delhi and pointed to silt along Yamuna banks. “He said Anil’s farm had the same soil,” the official said. GRP teams now knew they had to look along the Yamuna.GRP teams began scanning villages along Yamuna in Haryana, Delhi and UP to look for Anil. Often, officials said, they exceeded sanctioned spending on fuel, so the investigators paid out of their own pockets to keep the search going. On Dec 30, the GRP finally found the Anil they were looking for, a 28-year-old dairy owner at Motipur village of Greater Noida.Led by SP Nitika Gahlaut and inspector Satya Prakash, GRP teams from Ambala, Rohtak, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Panipat and Sonipat were involved in the pursuit on Anil. They leant that Anil had thrown the boy’s arm into the river and driven him to Palwal 100km away.Anil told police he “got frightened” after the accident. “The accused had gone to a colony near Bahadurgarh railway station when he saw the tearful boy and decided to take him with him for work,” a source said.For police, it was all about clinging to hope. “We wanted to get justice for a kid who lost his arm and was abandoned in pain on a road. Though the family gave up hope, our SP Nitika Gahlaut encouraged us to nab the accused even when all resources were exhausted,” said Satya Prakash, who led the trail despite his transfer to Ambala.

NEW DELHI: Our battle with toxic air across cities is showing up sharply in medical bills. Sales of respiratory medicines, including anti-allergics and anti-asthma therapies, surged past Rs 1,950 crore in Dec 2025, the highest monthly level ever, signalling a troubling escalation in pollution-linked illnesses. The Dec sales were 10% higher than the corresponding month in 2024, and over 18% more compared with 2023, figures culled from market research firm Pharmarack showed, indicating a consistent increase each year. For the Oct-Dec quarter, the period when pollution typically peaks, sales rose in tandem, by 14% year-on-year over 2024, and by 8% over 2023. During the quarter, respiratory therapy sales crossed Rs 5,620 crore, a rise of 17% over the previous quarter. A majority under this therapy – nearly Rs 3,500 crore – was contributed by anti-asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) medication.

Further, Foracort, the medication used for asthma and respiratory issues, is among the top selling drugs during the winter months, mirroring the trend. In Dec, it was the second largest selling drug with sales of Rs 90 crore, following weight-loss therapy, Mounjaro. Overall, the domestic pharma market is estimated at Rs 2.4 lakh crore annually. Exposure to air pollution can aggravate asthma and respiratory infections, and can even lead to serious issues like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, medical experts say. “With rise in suspended particles in the air, allergic rhinitis and bronchitis patients increase by about 60% in the daily outpatient (department). Use of masks and air purifiers does help to a great extent especially in susceptible individuals. As far as treatment is considered, use of steroid inhalers as well as anti-allergics forms the backbone,” Amitabh Malik, head of department – ENT, Paras Health in Gurgaon, told TOI. Other widely-used therapies during these months include Augmentin (marketed by GSK Pharma) and Paracetamol (pain and fever management). A GSK Pharma India executive said, “The Oct to Feb period typically coincides with a seasonal rise in upper respiratory infections. This leads to increased demand for related medications during these months. Poor air quality is purported to be a contributing factor, particularly in the rise of allergic rhinitis and respiratory symptoms like cough and cold.” Significantly, the trend is visible across zones – with north and south similar in sales, the data noted. “Multiple regions recorded a double-digit month-on-month growth, indicating that winter triggered ailments are no longer a seasonal fluctuation but air pollution in winter months makes it an escalating public health trigger,” Pharmarack noted in its Nov update.
