‘We're scared to drink tap water’: After Indore contamination tragedy, trust on municipal supply dries up; residents turn to bottled supply

INDORE: The water contamination tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital Indore — repeatedly ranked India’s cleanest city over the past decade — has triggered widespread distrust of municipal tap water, forcing residents to rely on bottled water and adding to the financial burden of low- and middle-income households. Officials confirmed that at least six people have died and over 200 have been hospitalised following an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea linked to contaminated drinking water in Bhagirathpura. However, the death toll remains disputed, with figures ranging between 10 and 16.

Cleanest City Hit By Water Contamination As Lab Links Indore Diarrhoea Outbreak To Pipeline Leak

“Yes, we are now scared of drinking municipal water. We need proof that it is safe before we consume it,” said Sunita to news agency PTI, a resident of Marathi Mohalla. “We are buying drinking water jars from the market at ₹20 to ₹30 per jar.” She alleged that residents had been receiving “dirty water” from taps for the past two to three years, but repeated complaints went unaddressed. “For a long time, we have been adding alum and boiling water before drinking,” she added. The loss of trust is so severe that even tea stall owners are using bottled water to reassure customers. “We are making tea using bottled water, but we haven’t increased prices,” said tea vendor Tushar Verma. Meanwhile, the district administration has stepped up efforts to contain the outbreak and rebuild confidence. District Magistrate Shivam Verma said an information, education and communication (IEC) campaign is underway in Bhagirathpura through NGO workers, advising residents to boil water for at least 15 minutes and to use only drinking water supplied through municipal tankers. Chlorination of municipal pipelines and tube wells in the affected area is also in progress. Health experts said chlorination remains one of the most effective methods to eliminate disease-causing pathogens and prevent water-borne infections. While the administration has officially confirmed six deaths, Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava earlier indicated that 10 fatalities may be linked to the outbreak. Residents claim the toll is as high as 16, including a six-month-old infant. Indore draws its water from the Narmada river through pipelines from Jalud in neighbouring Khargone district, nearly 80 km away, with tap water supplied to households on alternate days. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday ordered the transfer of municipal commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and the suspension of additional municipal commissioner Rohit Sissoniya and the in-charge superintendent engineer of the Public Health Engineering department, Sanjeev Shrivastava. In a status report submitted to the High Court, the state government said the diarrhoeal outbreak caused by contaminated water supply is now under effective control, with continuous monitoring in place to prevent any resurgence.(With agency inputs)

‘Mere theatrics’: UP gangster, claiming threat from cops, posts live videos every 30 minutes; properties worth Rs 30 crore seized

SHAMLI: Claiming an immediate threat to his life from Uttar Pradesh police, gangster Haji Firoz Khan chained himself inside his home, rigged a noose and installed CCTV cameras at multiple corners on Saturday, and posted live videos every half hour.Calling it “mere theatrics”, police said Khan has been posting such “updates” on his social media account since Wednesday to affirm his well-being amid intermittent warnings that any attempt to arrest him would lead to his “suicide”.The bizarre episode unfolded at Jhinjhana town in Shamli district after police seized 14 properties worth Rs 30 crore belonging to Khan under section 14 (1) of the Gangsters Act on Dec 25 last year as he was listed as absconding in police records. He has been issuing criminal threats against the official proceedings by public servants and levelling false, baseless allegations against police and administrative officials while threatening suicide.”The SP added Khan had earlier maintained his own social media cell, through which he was now making unsubstantiated accusations, but legal action against the gangster will continue despite his “online stunts”. Khan has 22 cases, including those of rape and murder, against his name across the region, Singhsaid. In one of the clips, Khan could purportedly be seen showing the noose tied from a ceiling fan, while claiming “he has imposed precautionary house arrest upon himself as cops intend to eliminate him in an encounter”.Police said keeping in view the social media stunt, a case was filed against Khan, his niece and another accusedunder BNS sections i9ncluding 218 (resistance to lawful taking of property), 226 (threat of injury to public servant).

He chose UK, she chose India: Gujarat HC paves way for couple’s divorce

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat HC has paved the way for a couple’s divorce after their marriage broke down over conflicting desires about where to live — the husband preferred living in the UK, but the wife did not want to leave India. The HC quashed Ahmedabad’s family court order that had rejected a mutual-consent divorce petition as “premature”.The family court had also cited the absence of a waiver application to bypass the mandatory six-month “cooling-off” period under Section 13B (2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The HC restored the divorce petition and directed the family court to decide the matter within six months. The couple married on Dec 9, 2023, but separated barely a month later, on Jan 17, 2024, when the man left for the UK for further studies. He informed her that he planned to settle permanently in the UK and asked her to join him. However, the woman was reluctant to leave India. She informed him she was settled in Ahmedabad and preferred to pursue her career in India only. After deciding to part ways, they filed a divorce petition under Section 13B of the Act on April 1, 2025, and stated that the discord between them arose from their desire to live in different countries. After the hearing, the bench of Justice Sangeeta Vishen and Justice Nisha Thakore said, “Perceptibly, there is no scope of reunion between the parties, for the parties are staying separately for more than one year as on the date of presenting the petition under Section 13B of the Act of 1955. Both the parties have mutually agreed to divorce; therefore, the six-month period as well as one year as provided in Section 13B (1) is almost over. Considering the stand taken by the respective parties, reunion is not possible. Not accepting the request of the parties, in the opinion of this court, will only prolong their agony. Both the parties are young and are desirous of pursuing their careers, as per their own wish.”

'MGNREGA bachao': Congress to challenge G RAM G in court; 45-day nationwide protest

NEW DELHI: Blowing the bugle for restoration of job guarantee scheme with a 45-day ‘MGNREGA bachao sangram’ from January 8, Congress on Saturday said it will also legally challenge VB-GRAMG in court because it violates a key provision of the Constitution. As it released a three-level agitation plan which will see outreach at panchayat level and end with four national rallies, Congress’ K C Venguopal and Jairam Ramesh said the nationwide struggle with maximum mobilisation will force Modi govt to restore the job guarantee scheme just like it had to roll back the three ‘black farm laws’.

VB-G RAM G Replaces MGNREGA: What changes?

VB-G RAM G Replaces MGNREGA: What changes?

AICC clarified the 45-day programme is the first-phase of the ‘sangram’ which will be extended beyond Feb 25. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “We will resist, peacefully and firmly, from every panchayat to Parliament.” “Centre has put 40% financial burden of the job scheme under the new law on the states. No state is in a position to provide these funds. So, the idea is to end the scheme,” Venugopal and Ramesh said.Ramesh argued MGNREGA was the responsibility of Centre but VB-G RAM G mentions upfront that the funding will be shared 60:40 between Centre and states. He said Article 258 talks about putting the funding burden on states “as may be agreed upon”, but no discussion was held with states. “The law is a violation of Article 258 and we will challenge it in court,” he said. Venugopal said the new law will deprive panchayats of funds and right to plan the work.

What are the hidden side effects of drinking black coffee regularly |

[ad_1]

What are the hidden side effects of drinking black coffee regularly

Black coffee has slipped into daily life so easily that it barely feels like a choice anymore. It is just there. Morning eyes half open, kettle on, mug in hand. No milk, no sugar, no guilt. It is often described as the cleanest way to drink coffee, almost like a health shortcut. That reputation is exactly why people stop paying attention to how it actually feels in the body. Food and drinks do not work in isolation. They react to sleep, stress, empty stomachs, hormones and habits. Black coffee is not bad by default, but drinking it regularly without noticing how your body responds can quietly create issues that feel unrelated at first.A peer reviewed study published in the journal Nutrients looked closely at caffeine intake and its effects on the body. It found that while moderate coffee consumption can fit into a healthy diet, excess intake or poor timing can increase anxiety, disturb sleep patterns and affect digestive comfort. The study also noted that individual sensitivity to caffeine varies widely, meaning the same cup can feel fine for one person and overwhelming for another.

How drinking black coffee regularly can affect the body

How drinking black coffee regularly can affect the body

The stomach often reacts first

One of the earliest side effects of drinking black coffee regularly shows up in the gut. Coffee increases stomach acid. When there is food present, this usually stays manageable. When there is not, that acid has nothing to work on except the stomach lining itself. Over time this can feel like acidity, bloating, a sour feeling in the chest or that odd hollow burn many people ignore and push through. It becomes normalised, especially for those who drink coffee first thing in the morning before eating anything.

Sleep quality can quietly slip

Coffee does not always stop sleep completely. More often, it changes how deep that sleep goes. Drinking black coffee regularly can reduce deep sleep even if falling asleep still happens. This is why someone can sleep for seven hours and still wake up tired. The body stays slightly alert underneath the surface. Over weeks, this builds into constant fatigue, foggy mornings and the need for more coffee to function.

Anxiety can feel louder

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system. That is the point. But when black coffee becomes a frequent habit, especially in high amounts, that stimulation can tip into restlessness. Racing thoughts, shaky hands, a fast heartbeat or a sense of unease can all show up. People often blame stress or personality when coffee is quietly amplifying everything. Those already prone to anxiety tend to feel this effect more strongly.

Hydration gets overlooked

Black coffee has a mild diuretic effect. It encourages fluid loss. When it replaces water rather than sitting alongside it, dehydration creeps in. This often shows up as headaches, dry skin, tiredness or constipation. Many people add another coffee when they feel drained, which only deepens the cycle. A glass of water sounds basic, but it makes a noticeable difference.

Mineral absorption can be affected

Drinking black coffee regularly around meal times can slightly interfere with the absorption of minerals like iron and calcium. This matters more for people who are already low in these nutrients. Women, especially those with heavy periods, often fall into this group. Over time, small disruptions add up. Spacing coffee away from meals helps, but most people are not aware of this link.

Heart sensations can feel uncomfortable

Some people notice palpitations or a fluttering feeling in the chest after coffee. This does not automatically mean something serious, but it is a sign of sensitivity. Black coffee delivers caffeine quickly, and in regular use this can feel like pressure rather than energy. Reducing quantity or slowing consumption often eases this.Black coffee is not something that needs to be feared or cut out completely. It simply needs attention. Noticing when it feels good and when it does not is often more useful than any rule. The body usually gives signals long before real problems begin.Disclaimer: This content is intended purely for informational use and is not a substitute for professional medical, nutritional or scientific advice. ‘Venezuelan forces were waiting’: Trump details how US carried out Caracas strikes; gives ‘larger attack’ warning

'Venezuelan forces were waiting': Trump details how US carried out Caracas strikes; gives 'larger attack' warning
US president Donald Trump

United States President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that Venezuelan forces were “waiting” for the American forces with “many ships out”.Trump said that despite being in a “ready position”, Venezuelan forces were “completely overwhelmed and very quickly incapacitated”.He said that the US was “ready” to stage a second “and much larger” attack on the country if needed, saying Washington was initially prepared to do a “second wave” and had assumed it would be necessary – but given the success of last night’s attack, it “probably would now not be”.The US President also said the US has “knocked out 97 per cent of drugs coming in by sea”, and claimed that each boat carrying drugs killed 25,000 people on average. Trump said that the lights in Caracas were shut off as the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was captured overnight, praising those involved for executing the mission.“No nation in the world could achieve what America achieved yesterday, or frankly, in just a short period of time, all Venezuelan military capacities were rendered powerless as the men and women of our military, working with us, law enforcement, successfully captured Maduro in the dead of night. It was dark, the lights of Caracas were largely turned off due to a certain expertise that we have,” Trump said in a news conference, adding that “it was dark and it was deadly”.Just minutes before the press brief, Trump posted a photo of Nicolas Maduro in custody on a US naval ship and wearing both a blindfold and handcuffs.“Nicolas Maduro on board the USS Iwo Jima,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, along with a picture showing Maduro hours after he was snatched by US forces. The Venezuelan leader had on what appeared to be noise-cancelling ear muffs and grey Nike-branded sweatpants and a jacket.

Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks regular season game: Full injury report, who's out, where to watch, and more (January 3, 2026)
Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid vs New York Knicks (Image via Getty).

The Philadelphia 76ers visit the New York Knicks on January 3, 2026, for an Atlantic Division game at Madison Square Garden. Both teams come in dealing with injuries, and those absences could decide how this game plays out.New York has been strong at home, while Philadelphia has held its own on the road. With key players listed as out or questionable on both sides, this game is likely to lean heavily on the stars who are available, especially in the fourth quarter.

Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks Injury report (January 3, 2025)

Philadelphia 76ers will be without Kelly Oubre Jr., who is sidelined with a left knee sprain. Trendon Watford is also out due to a left adductor strain. The biggest question is Joel Embiid, who is listed as probable because of right knee injury management. If he plays, the Sixers gain a clear advantage inside. If not, their frontcourt becomes much thinner. The New York Knicks are also missing important pieces. Josh Hart remains out with an ankle injury and has already missed several games. Mitchell Robinson is listed as probable as he continues to manage his own ankle issue. Landry Shamet is unavailable with a shoulder problem, while Karl-Anthony Towns could return after missing time due to illness.

Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks When and where to watch (January 3, 2026)

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will air on NBA TV nationally, with local broadcasts on NBC Sports Philadelphia and MSG Network. Streaming options include NBA League Pass, the ESPN app, and Fubo.

How both teams are playing

New York enters the night at 23-11 and has been one of the league’s best home teams, going 15-3 at Madison Square Garden. Even with recent injuries, the Knicks have stayed competitive by controlling the glass and limiting second chances.Philadelphia is 18-14 overall and 9-6 on the road. Tyrese Maxey has carried the offense, averaging 30.9 points per game, especially when Embiid’s minutes are managed. The Sixers have had success with strong second quarters, but injuries have made it harder to sustain that level across a full game.

Matchups to watch in tonight’s 76ers vs Knicks game

The guard matchup between Maxey and Jalen Brunson will set the tone. Both control the pace and take most of the late-game shots. If Embiid plays, his minutes against the Knicks’ bigs will matter just as much. Bench production is another concern, as both teams are missing rotation players.

Philadelphia 76ers vs New York Knicks Betting outlook (January 3, 2026)

New York is favored by 3.5 points at home. The total sits around 232.5 points. The Knicks are listed between -162 and -166 on the moneyline, with Philadelphia between +136 and +138. Projections lean toward a narrow Knicks win, with recent trends pointing toward another high-scoring game.

'We are going to run the country': Trump addresses after Nicolas Maduro capture, Venezuela strike - top quotes

US president Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States would assume control of Venezuela in the immediate aftermath of the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. “We don’t want to be involved with having someone else get in, and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years. So we are going to run the country.” He did not provide a timetable for the transition.Trump praised the US military for its “breathtaking speed, power, precision and competence”, describing the troops as “highly trained warriors” operating alongside U.S. law enforcement. He said Venezuelan forces were “waiting for us” and in a “ready position”, but were “completely overwhelmed and very quickly incapacitated”. He added that no U.S. personnel were killed and no equipment lost.Trump also claimed the US has “knocked out 97% of drugs coming in by sea”, alleging each drug boat kills 25,000 people on average. He said the capture of Maduro took place under cover of darkness. “No nation in the world could achieve what America achieved yesterday,” Trump said, adding that “the lights of Caracas were largely turned off”. “It was dark and it was deadly,” he said.Earlier today, the Trump announced that the US had captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a military operation early on Saturday, following weeks of escalating pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration. Speaking on Fox News, President Donald Trump said the US would play a central role in shaping Venezuela’s future. “We’ll be involved in it very much,” he said, adding: “We can’t take a chance in letting somebody else run and just take over what he left.”Trump described the raid in detail during an interview on “Fox and Friends Weekend”, saying Maduro had been “highly guarded” inside a presidential palace “like a fortress”. US forces, he said, were prepared to breach steel-reinforced rooms using “massive blowtorches” and had rehearsed the operation on a full-scale replica of the building. “He didn’t get that space closed,” Trump said. “We were prepared.”The operation took place under cover of darkness, with Trump claiming the US turned off “almost all of the lights in Caracas”. At least seven explosions were heard, and the assault lasted less than 30 minutes. Venezuela’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, said civilians and members of the military were killed, though she did not give figures. Trump said only “a couple of guys were hit” on the US side. The White House said weather conditions had delayed the raid for several days. The Justice Department has since released an indictment accusing Maduro and Flores of involvement in a narco-terrorism conspiracy.
