US helicopter on search mission for downed jet also hit by projectile, claims Iran media

Iranian state-linked media has claimed that a US helicopter sent to search for a downed American fighter jet was itself struck by a projectile, adding further uncertainty to an already tense situation. The report, carried by Mehr news agency, has not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate response from US officials. The claim follows Iranian state television reports that an American fighter jet went down over southwestern Iran, with at least one crew member ejecting. In response, the United States launched a search and rescue operation, with an Israeli military officer saying Israel was assisting in the mission. Social media footage appeared to show US drones, aircraft and helicopters flying over a mountainous area where the jet was believed to have come down.

If confirmed, it would mark the first known instance of a US aircraft being lost inside Iranian territory during the ongoing conflict, now in its fifth week. It remains unclear whether the jet was shot down or crashed due to a technical fault, and the number of personnel on board has not been confirmed.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump had been briefed on the situation, but did not provide further details. The Pentagon and US Central Command have not commented.Iranian television escalated its messaging, with an anchor urging residents to report or hand over any “enemy pilot” to authorities, promising a reward. Broadcasts in Kohkilouyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province and nearby regions called on civilians to assist in locating the pilot. Earlier, an on-screen message reportedly urged people to shoot at suspected US personnel, referring to unverified footage circulating online. The claims come amid a wider surge in regional hostilities. Iran has been accused of targeting key infrastructure across the Gulf, including a desalination plant in Kuwait and energy facilities. Air defences were activated in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, while Israel reported incoming missiles. The conflict, which began on February 28, has led to rising casualties across multiple countries and increased global concern, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions have pushed oil prices sharply higher.

Foreign medical graduates stuck in registration limbo in Maharashtra | Mumbai News

Over 2,000 foreign medical graduates in Maharashtra are awaiting permanent registration (Representative image)

MUMBAI: Over 2,000 candidates in the state are awaiting clear directives from the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) for permanent registration after the National Medical Commission (NMC) clarified guidelines allowing foreign medical graduates (FMGs) who attended online classes during Covid to register in India. The FMGs studied in Georgia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, China and the Philippines, among others.MMC has stated that each case is different and not all graduates have completed the compensatory internship as prescribed by NMC, which is why NMC guidelines need to be implemented with care. Some of the graduates who completed their compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) are trying to repeat their internship in India, waiting to hear from MMC. “We cleared the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). We have completed our mandatory one-year internship in our country of degree completion. We… ensured that all our online classes were supported by offline classes and practical hours. Still we are not getting registration to practice here,” said Rachita Kurmi, who completed her MBBS in China.Candidates alleged that while states such as Kerala, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have been reluctant to grant permanent registration, others like UP had been allowing FMGs to practice, and J&K issued a directive following the NMC guidelines.Another candidate, said, “Countries like the UK and the USA also faced the pandemic, India wasn’t the only one. However, those countries granted registration to students who had studied abroad after they cleared the screening exam. We are concerned that the MMC may require us to undergo an additional one or two years of internship here as well.”The candidates have approached RTI activist Faisal Shaikh, who has approached MMC and the medical education minister seeking relief for the affected ones. “Given that these doctors have already lost significant time, we demand a fast-track redressal mechanism,” he said. MMC administrator Vinki Rughwani said there are over 2,000 FMGs from the state who have been seeking permanent registration in the last year. “We will have to deal with this on a case-by-case basis. We will have to implement the NMC guidelines with care, to ensure there is no deviation from their policy,” he said. “The state council will take a student-friendly decision.”

IIT-Bombay means business: Section 8 company to bridge lab-market gap | Mumbai News

IIT-Bombay has launched TRYST, a Section 8 company, to commercialize dormant early-stage technologies. (File Photo)

MUMBAI: IIT-Bombay has taken a unique approach to convert ‘dormant’ early-stage technologies developed on campus into commercially viable industry solutions. The Powai institute is the first IIT in the country to set up a Section 8 company called the Translational Research Yielding Solutions for Tomorrow (TRYST) for the purpose. The company will identify technologies that remained unused after the proof-of-concept stage, often because students graduate and faculty shift focus to new research areas, and transform it into industry-relevant products.Engineers, from within and outside the IIT system, will be hired at TRYST. It will follow a corporate-style structure, led by a CEO, and will also engage business development managers to bridge the gap between the lab and the market. Unlike the regular academic research timelines (PhDs in five years), TRYST plans to deliver products with market potential in shorter timelines.

CEO hired, Managers coming soon

CEO hired, Managers coming soon

Explaining the concept, Prof Milind Atrey, deputy director (academics, research and translation), said, “Only about 1% of the campus population become entrepreneurs, and just a fraction of these start-ups survive beyond five years. Since most professors and students are not trained for entrepreneurship, many great ideas do not take off despite funding. But if a technology has real-world value, it shouldn’t remain unused at IIT Bombay.” The institute estimates that about 20-30% of their technologies hold potential for further development and industry adoption.TRYST was mentioned by director, Prof Shireesh Kedare, during the recently concluded Bharat Innovates Deep-Tech Pre-Summit, which focused on taking India’s translational research to the global stage. The initiative will function in two ways, first by translating existing laboratory technologies into industry-relevant products, and by developing solutions based on specific industry demands. In the second, companies can approach the centre with problem statements, which will be addressed using the institute’s technical expertise. TRYST’s professor-in-charge Chandra Sekher Yerramalli said, “If a technology is currently at a readiness level (TRL) of 3, we aim to advance it to levels 6 or 7, demonstrate a pilot to industry partners, and subsequently take it to the product stage for commercialisation.”Dr Jitendra Balakrishnan has been hired as TRYST CEO.Prof Atrey added, “Today, when industry collaborates with a professor, they end up handling everything, from timelines, hiring, and project management, leaving less time for core technical work. With TRYST, these responsibilities can be centralized, allowing faculty to focus purely on their expertise.”The institute recently invested Rs 200 crore in the Centre for Sophisticated Instruments and Facilities. TRYST will make use of this centre for development of technologies. The institute hopes to raise funds from alumni as well as govt under Research, Development and Innovation scheme.

He then forced himself on her,” Macherla police inspector Venkata Ramana said. The accused tied the woman up with a scarf, gagged her with a piece of cloth, raped her and thrashed her severely. Ruturaj Gaikwad ‘threatened’ by Sanju Samson at CSK? Ex-captain’s big claim | Cricket News

Former England captain Michael Vaughan and ex-New Zealand pacer Simon Doull have raised questions over the dynamics inside Chennai Super Kings, suggesting that skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad could feel “threatened” by the presence of Sanju Samson.Speaking on a Cricbuzz show, the duo discussed Samson’s role before turning their attention to Gaikwad’s position as captain.“What about the captain, Gaikwad? Do you think he feels threatened [by Samson]?” Vaughan asked.“Absolutely,” Doull replied.

Mike Hussey admits CSK were outplayed after batting collapse

Vaughan elaborated on the situation, pointing out the layered dynamics within the side. “[One of the league’s] youngest captains Gaikwad, he’s done it a bit now and you kind of go, ‘Go on, we’re gonna back you, you’re the captain. But by the way, we’re signing Sanju, who’s a very good captain and he’s a keeper. And guess what? We’ve had a keeper who was a captain for a long period of time and did very well, and we’re gonna try and replace him. But you carry on captaining and hope it doesn’t affect you.’”Samson, who was the longest-serving and among the most successful captains at Rajasthan Royals, had led the side to the IPL 2022 final, strengthening his credentials as a leader. However, his start with CSK in IPL 2026 has been underwhelming, with back-to-back single-digit scores. Doull acknowledged the pressure surrounding the wicketkeeper-batter, especially after a high-profile move.“Tough challenge for him, and it’s one of those situations you find yourself in when you’re not desperate, but when you want to play for a certain side and you want to put on a show,” Doull said. “I mean, he is a South boy, isn’t he? He is a Kerala boy. He wants to put on a show. I think he feels like he’s more at home. In the South, the trade happened; it was a big trade as we’ve talked about, you’ve lost 2 high quality players for one player. So the pressure’s quite enormous, the pressure of maybe what they see him as in the future as well. But he just got to think back to a few weeks ago, doesn’t he? And how was he playing in the last 3 games [in the T20 World Cup].”The comments came after Chennai Super Kings slumped to their second successive defeat, going down to Punjab Kings despite posting a competitive 209 for five.Punjab’s chase was anchored by skipper Shreyas Iyer, who struck a fluent 50 off 29 balls and stitched a crucial 59-run stand with Nehal Wadhera. Contributions from Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly ensured the visitors chased down the target with five wickets in hand.

Should CSK consider a leadership change if performance doesn't improve?

Earlier, youngster Ayush Mhatre impressed with a 43-ball 73, while Gaikwad chipped in with 28 as CSK built a strong platform. But Samson’s early dismissal and a middle-overs slowdown hurt the hosts, who managed 64 runs in the final five overs through late hits from Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube.In the end, despite posting a formidable total, CSK were outplayed by a composed Punjab unit, leaving questions not just about their bowling but also about the evolving leadership equation within the side.

Citizens to be invited on town vending panels | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Five days after announcing the election results of hawker representatives who would be a part of the eight Town Vending Committees (TVCs) across the city, the BMC has initiated the process of appointing govt and non-govt members on it.Officials said each TVC will comprise 20 members. On the govt side, representatives will be drawn from the police, traffic department and planning authorities, such as Mhada and MMRDA. For non-govt representation, the civic body will soon issue a public advertisement inviting applications from interested stakeholders. These could be citizen representatives or members of NGOs. The BMC chief was briefed on the progress of the process on Thursday. A BMC official said, “We had a review meeting on the future course of action. Once all the names are finalised on the TVC, the same will be notified by the govt.”

Citizens to be invited on town vending panels

There is one TVC and seven others across the civic body’s seven zones. Even as the process of finalising the TVC moves ahead, the civic body has continued its crackdown on unauthorised hawkers. Over the two days on April 2 and 3, Lalbaug’s Mirchi Galli – a spice souk – saw back-to-back civic action. Shops here had for years encroached area nearly 10-15 feet ahead of the shops into public walking space, effectively swallowing up pedestrian walking space. Dayashankar Singh, president of the Azad Hawkers Union, said it’s best if the hawkers are regularised. “The BMC has resorted to blanket evictions. The recent drives in areas such as Mulund, Chembur, Dadar and Crawford Market (Dawa Bazaar), had many vendors being removed without prior verification of their status,” said Singh. Deputy municipal commissioner (special) Vinayak Vispute said formation of TVC is being done following the due process.

BMC takes on British-era drains with latest tech | Mumbai News

Mumbai currently has a 495-km-long network of underground stormwater arch drains in the island city

MUMBAI: The city’s century-old underground stormwater arch drains are undergoing an upgrade, with the BMC’s ongoing project using geopolymer lining trenchless technology — a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country. The work will cover 27 critical stretches of drains spanning 14.3 km in the island city, along with five years of maintenance. Civic officials said the intervention is expected to extend the lifespan of these British-era drains by at least 50 years while improving their discharge capacity during heavy rainfall.Mumbai currently has a 495-km-long network of underground stormwater arch drains in the island city. While routine desilting is carried out by the operations and maintenance wing of the storm water drains (SWD) department, recent CCTV surveys have flagged structural concerns in several sections. Officials found multiple defects, such as cracks, brick displacement, loss of mortar, and even partial collapses in parts of the ageing network.

A total of 56 drain components, measuring 23.5 km, were identified as being in a damaged condition. Of these, 27 components — covering 14.3km — were categorised as critical and in need of immediate rehabilitation to prevent potential collapse. To address the issue, the SWD department consulted experts from IIT Bombay and VJTI. Based on their recommendations, a technical advisory committee concluded that geopolymer lining using trenchless technology was the most suitable solution among the available options.“The technology allows internal strengthening of the drains without extensive excavation, making it less disruptive and faster to implement,” a civic official said. “Once completed, it will not only reinforce structural stability but also improve flow velocity, ensuring quicker disposal of rainwater during intense downpours.”The move comes against the backdrop of increasingly erratic and intense monsoon patterns in Mumbai, where instances of nearly 1,000mm of rainfall over a few days have been recorded in recent years, often leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas.Officials said the geopolymer lining method is environmentally friendly and widely used in countries such as the US, though this marks its first large-scale deployment in India. The project is currently underway in the city area, with civic engineers monitoring progress at key outfalls and stretches. Once completed, BMC plans to assess further phases to cover additional vulnerable sections of the drainage network.

AAP rift out in open: Raghav Chadha attacks leadership; party hits back | India News

Arvind Kejriwal (L) and Raghav Chadha (R)

NEW DELHI: A day after the Aam Aadmi Party removed Raghav Chadha as its Rajya Sabha deputy leader, the MP launched a pointed attack on the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, asserting that his silence in Parliament should not be mistaken for defeat.Once seen as a Kejriwal loyalist, Chadha, without directly naming individuals, raised questions over the party’s high command, especially after AAP requested the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to not allot him speaking time in the House.Taking to social media, Chadha shared a video clip shot against the backdrop of the old Parliament building, titled “Silenced, not defeated,” which he described as his “message to aam aadmi.”

“Silenced Not Defeated”: Raghav Chadha Hits Back After AAP Drops Him From RS Post

He said in the video, “Whenever I get a chance to speak in the Parliament, I raise public issues. And perhaps I raise topics that are not usually raised in the Parliament. But is raising public issues a crime? Have I committed a crime? Have I made a mistake? Have I done something wrong?”“AAP has told the Rajya Sabha Secretariat that Raghav Chadha should be stopped from speaking in the Parliament. Yes, the AAP has informed the Parliament that Raghav Chadda should not be given a chance to speak in the Parliament,” he added.Stressing that his parliamentary interventions have consistently focused on issues affecting ordinary citizens, Chadha said that while his right to speak may have been curtailed, his silence should not be mistaken for defeat.“And the people who took away my right to speak in the Parliament today, silenced me. I want to say something to them, too. Do not consider my silence as my defeat. Do not consider my silence as my defeat. I am that river which becomes a flood when the time comes,” Chadha said. The Aam Aadmi Party MP underlined that his interventions in Parliament have centred on everyday concerns, from high food prices at airports and the struggles of delivery workers to food adulteration, toll and banking charges, and taxation issues affecting content creators. He also flagged telecom practices such as frequent recharge cycles and the absence of data rollover benefits.“I talk about the problem of Zomato Blinkit delivery riders. I raise the issue of adulteration in food. I talk about the loot of toll plazas and bank charges. I even talk about the strike on content creators due to the burden of taxes on the middle class. I talk about how telecom companies make us recharge 13 times in 12 months. They do not give data rollover. They stop the incoming after the recharge is over,” he said.Chadha argued that these issues directly benefit the public and questioned how raising them could harm the party.“I raised all these issues in the Parliament. And after raising these issues, the common man of the country benefited. But how did that harm the Aam Aadmi Party? Why would anyone want to stop me from speaking? Why would anyone want to silence my voice? Anyway, you people give me unlimited love. Whenever I raise your issues, you support me, praise me, and encourage me. I want to say thank you to you. In the same way, hold my hand and support me. Do not leave me. I am with you. And I am for you,” he said.A day earlier, the party had formally informed the Rajya Sabha secretariat that Ashok Kumar Mittal would replace Chadha as its deputy leader in the Upper House, marking a significant shift within the party ranks. In recent years, the Punjab-elected Rajya Sabha member had built a strong public profile by consistently raising “public issues” in Parliament, ranging from gig workers’ rights and rising mobile recharge costs to paternity leave and pricing of eatery menus at airports.Chadha entered politics with the rise of the Aam Aadmi Party, an unconventional political startup that quickly grew into a national force. Much of the momentum behind Arvind Kejriwal’s emergence was driven directly by the Jan Lokpal movement led by Anna Hazare. As AAP expanded and consolidated its position, forming three successive governments in Delhi, including two with sweeping majorities, Chadha’s stature within the party also rose. He became one of Kejriwal’s trusted lieutenants and a prominent public face of the party. When AAP pushed beyond Delhi and made a decisive breakthrough in Punjab, Chadha was entrusted with key organisational responsibilities. He played a significant role in the party’s expansion and in the formation of the government which is being led by chief minister Bhagwant Mann.Raghav Chadha, also a chartered accountant, has long identified himself as a product of the “Arvind Kejriwal school of politics”, aligning his rise with the leadership and ideology of AAP supremo Kejriwal.

‘Jo darr gaya, samjho marr gaya’: AAP top brass targets Raghav Chadha

As Chadha raised questions on party leadership, the AAP hit back swiftly, with senior leaders publicly countering their now, a distant colleague.AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj responded to Chadha’s video with one of his own on X, invoking a famous Sholay dialogue in a pointed swipe: “jo darr gaya, samjho marr gaya.”The party’s IT cell chief Anurag Dhanda also launched a sharp critique, accusing Chadha of failing to perform his duties in the party’s interest. Taking aim at the issues Chadha raised in Parliament, he remarked, “In Parliament, the party gets just a little time to speak—in that, we can either struggle to save the country or haggle to make the samosas cheaper in the airport canteen.”Dhanda went further, questioning Chadha’s political stance and resolve. “If someone fears Modi, will they fight for the country?” he said, alleging that Chadha had avoided taking strong positions on key national issues.

Poll

Do you think internal conflicts affect a party’s image?

He cited multiple instances to back his charge, alleging silence during the arrest of party workers in Gujarat, inaction over voting rights concerns in West Bengal, and refusal to support a motion against the Chief Election Commissioner. Dhanda also accused Chadha of staying back in the House during party walkouts.“For the past few years, you’ve grown afraid, Raghav. You hesitate to speak against Modi. You hesitate to speak on the country’s real issues,” he said, ending with a pointed remark: “He who is afraid…”

India set to get 3rd nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine INS Aridhaman; Rajnath drops hint

NEW DELHI: India is set to commission its third indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridhaman, into the Indian Navy on Friday, news agency ANI reported, marking a major boost to the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities.Hinting at the induction, defence minister Rajnath Singh posted on X in Hindi: “It’s not a word, it’s power, ‘Aridhaman’!”INS Aridhaman, part of India’s Arihant-class submarines, is a 7,000-tonne vessel, making it larger and more advanced than its predecessors INS Arihant and INS Arighaat. Built under the Advanced Technology Vessel programme at Visakhapatnam, the submarine represents a key milestone in India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

India’s Defence Exports Jump to ₹38,424 Crore, Marking Record Growth in FY26

Equipped with an 83 MW Compact Light Water Reactor, the submarine is designed for enhanced stealth and endurance. It features advanced indigenous sonar systems and acoustic suppression technologies, improving its underwater detection and survivability.A major upgrade over earlier platforms is its increased missile capacity. INS Aridhaman is fitted with eight vertical launch system tubes, double that of earlier submarines, allowing it to carry up to 24 K-15 Sagarika missiles with a range of 750 km or eight K-4 missiles with a range of 3,500 km. It is also expected to support future K-5 missiles with a range of around 6,000 km.With its induction, India will operate three nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines under the Strategic Forces Command. This strengthens the country’s sea-based leg of the nuclear triad and moves it closer to achieving continuous at-sea deterrence, ensuring at least one nuclear submarine remains deployed at all times. The submarine is expected to be based at Project Varsha near Visakhapatnam, a high-security naval facility designed to house India’s nuclear fleet.India is also progressing on additional naval capabilities, including the planned induction of the Russian Akula-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, Chakra III, and negotiations for advanced diesel-electric submarines under Project-75(I).
