BMC clears 3-tier alternative reservoir plan at Malabar Hill | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Among the first civic projects reviewed by municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide is the long-pending alternative reservoir at Malabar Hill, with officials zeroing in on a three-tier design of 52 MLD capacity. The water supply projects (WSP) department presented multiple options. The selected plan will comprise an underground tank, a ground-level tank and an upper-level tank. Water will be routed through the ground-level tank and pumped upwards to ensure uninterrupted supply when sections of the existing reservoir are shut for repairs. The push for an alternative facility stems from the need to repair the ageing Malabar Hill reservoir.

BMC clears 3-tier alternative reservoir plan at Malabar Hill

Earlier plans to demolish and rebuild the reservoir were shelved following strong public opposition in Sept 2023, as the move would have impacted the Hanging Gardens situated above it. Authorities have since opted for phased repairs, contingent on the alternative reservoir becoming operational. Bhide has directed officials to examine whether the proposed three-tier structure could affect the protected “funnel of vision” — a designated view corridor preserving uninterrupted vistas of Marine Drive and Backbay. Civic officials said that identified view-sensitive stretches include the eastern flank from Priyadarshini Park to Nepeansea Road (Sector 49), and the southern edge from the wooded limits of Raj Bhavan along Walkeshwar Road to Walkeshwar Circle. While preliminary assessments suggest the new structure is unlikely to obstruct these sightlines, officials said a detailed review is underway as part of due diligence.A civic official said, “Before deciding on the current site, two other sites — one near a post office and another on Ridge road — were studied. The plot near the staff quarters is being finalised for the project.”Once checks are completed to determine whether it could affect the protected “funnel of vision”, work on floating a tender for its construction will begin, officials said. “The administration is positive about getting started with this work, as the existing reservoir has already outlived its lifespan and there is a need for an alternate tank to be made ready,” an official said.

2 UBT MPs Nagesh Ashtikar, Sanjay Deshmukh attend Sena minister’s Delhi dinner meet | Mumbai News

MUMBAI/SAMBHAJINAGAR: Two MPs of the Uddhav Thackeray camp, Nagesh Ashtikar (Hingoli) and Sanjay Deshmukh (Yavatmal-Washim), attended a dinner meet hosted by Shiv Sena Union minister Pratap Jadhav in New Delhi on Wednesday, leading to speculation of a possible rift in the Shiv Sena (UBT) and a section of its MPs breaking away. However, Sena (UBT) netas said ministers host such dinners in New Delhi, and there was nothing more to the matter.Eyebrows were also raised as Sanjay Jadhav, Sena (UBT) MP from Parbhani, met Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday. However, Jadhav later clarified that his visit was to request a separate census column for the Vimukta Jati (Denotified Tribes), Nomadic Tribes and tribal communities in the 2027 census. On attending Pratap Jadhav’s dinner, Ashtikar said, “These meetings must not be viewed from a political angle. It was Jadhav’s anniversary dinner. He gave us the invitation in Parliament, so we went there as courtesy for only 5-10 minutes.”Ashtikar also said that speculation around ‘Operation Tiger’, a possible attempt to win over UBT Sena’s MPs, had been on ever since Sena (UBT) won nine Lok Sabha seats from Maharashtra, maintaining that such talks would remain mere conjecture. In Feb 2025, a similar controversy had broken out over Sena (UBT) MPs attending dinner meetings and events in New Delhi hosted by the Dy CM Eknath Shinde-led Sena’s Union ministers and MPs. During a visit to Delhi, Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray had spoken to his party’s MPs and was said to have told them to avoid attending events hosted by Shinde Sena’s ministers or MPs or at least take prior permission from the party, since it led to speculation about possible defections. However, Sena (UBT) MPs said it was the norm in Delhi to attend dinners or events hosted by ministers from Maharashtra and it was not right to stop MPs from going to such events.

3 GRP cops dismissed from service for threatening and extorting money from jeweller at Mumbai Central Terminus in 2025 | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Three Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel have been dismissed from service following a departmental inquiry for assaulting and extorting money from a jeweller in the presence of his minor daughter at Mumbai Central Terminus last year.Their dismissal order, issued on March 30, stated that assistant sub-inspector Lalit Jagtap, constable Rahul Bhosle, and constable Anil Rathod, all attached to the Mumbai Central GRP chowky, harassed the jeweller despite him providing an explanation for the valuables that he was carrying. The trio had been placed under suspension following the incident on August 10, 2025. They were currently posted at GRP’s Ghatkopar headquarters. The incident took place when the jeweller and his eight-year-old daughter, who were visiting Mumbai for Raksha Bandhan, were to board the Duronto Express to return home to Rajasthan. The jeweller’s brother-in-law accompanied them to Mumbai Central Terminus.Around 10.30pm, the group reached platform no. 5 when a uniformed man seated at a table stopped them for baggage check. The GRP cop, who wasn’t wearing a name tag, found a 14gm gold biscuit wrapped in paper and Rs 31,000 cash in the luggage. The jeweller explained that he had attended a jewellery exhibition in Mumbai, besides visiting his sister for Raksha Bandhan. But the cop was not satisfied and summoned another uniformed colleague, also not wearing his name tag. They took the jeweller, his daughter, and brother-in-law outside the terminus through an alley to a room where a third cop was seated. They claimed he was a “senior”.They hurled abuses and slapped the jeweller, and threatened to lock him up overnight. “I was slapped twice in front of my daughter who began crying,” the jeweller had told TOI last year. The cops threatened to produce the gold biscuit before a magistrate and asked him to arrange for a copy of his Aadhaar card over the phone. They also forced the jeweller to sign a few blank sheets of paper.Just five minutes before his train was to depart, at 10.55pm, the cops returned his gold, but kept the cash. When the jeweller pleaded, they returned Rs 1,900 and advised him to run if he wanted to board his train on time. The traumatised jeweller registered a police complaint in Rajasthan on August 16. It was subsequently transferred to Mumbai Central GRP and then to the Railway Crime Branch. “In seven months, GRP has completed a departmental probe and dismissed the cops, sending a strong message that corruption and extortion will not be tolerated,” said activist Sameer Zaveri.
