The voice heard in the clips is that of another inmate, Zypsin Daniel. Officials said the trio are associated with the Sunkadkatte Rakshit gang.

Barrack shift triggered backlash

According to Alok Kumar, preliminary findings indicate that the videos were recorded after the prison administration initiated a new system of shifting inmates to different barracks based on the alphabetical order of their names. The move aims to break communication links among inmates and prevent coordinated criminal activities.Darshan had been shifted to a quarantine barrack on the evening of March 27 as part of this system. Officials said the video was recorded just minutes before his relocation.Investigators believe the clips were deliberately leaked to the media to derail the reform process, tarnish the image of the prison administration, and demoralise senior officials of the Prison and Correctional Services Department.A complaint was filed at the Parappana Agrahara Police Station on March 28 against the accused inmates. Simultaneously, disciplinary action has been initiated against prison staff for lapses in duty.

Three warders suspended

Warders Niranjan Kamat, Hanumantappa Hadpad, and Shivanand Karlabatti have been suspended for dereliction of duty during the night of March 27 and the morning of March 28, when the mobile phones were allegedly used to record the videos. Action is also being initiated against the jailer who was on supervisory duty at the time, officials said.In a concerning development, authorities also detected active Airtel network signals in certain parts of the prison, raising serious questions about communication loopholes. Officials have issued a warning to the telecom provider to take corrective measures and prevent misuse.Despite the incident, prison authorities asserted that reform measures will continue. “Efforts to streamline and improve prison administration will not be deterred by vested interests attempting to disrupt the system,” a senior official said.

PALANPUR: A 36-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by a woman she had trusted for years in Palanpur in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, in an incident that has raised serious questions about trust.The victim, Shantiben Akedivala, a resident of Chanakyapuri Society in Palanpur city, was allegedly killed in a premeditated manner over a dispute involving around 790 grams of gold, silver jewellery and Rs 2 lakh in cash.According to police, the prime accused, Rekha Rathod, had been associated with the Akedivala family for nearly fifteen years, working in household chores and cooking, and had won their complete confidence.Rekha Rathod, who is also engaged in the furniture business in the Hanuman Tekri area, had maintained close contact with Shantiben. About a year ago, Shantiben had reportedly helped Rekha Rathod during a time of need by giving her gold and silver ornaments along with cash. Over time, when Shantiben began asking for the return of the money and jewellery, tensions arose between the two.On the night of March 22, around 8 pm, Shantiben went to Rekha Rathod’s furniture shop, where, according to investigators, a murder conspiracy had already been planned. Rekha Rathod, along with her husband and two other accomplices, allegedly murdered Shantiben in a brutal manner.They first intoxicated her, then strangled her using a clutch wire used in bikes.

Mumbai: Public hearings for the 23-km-long Versova-Bhayander coastal road were not held specifically for the fishing communities because the road does not run through any fishing villages, said BMC officials. But the potential impact of creekside construction and mangrove loss on their livelihoods has been recognised and will be compensated, they added.Authorities are commissioning the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in Versova to conduct a socio-economic impact assessment, including baseline surveys and identification of affected persons. Compensation, rehabilitation, and mitigation measures will be implemented based on the study recommendations, an official added. Fisherfolk say the surveys have not yet begun, even though construction work has started. Some 103 hectares of mangrove land will be affected by the construction. Despite protests, the BMC claims the transport benefits of the Versova-Bhayander coastal road will outweigh the costs to local ecology. The project cost-benefit analysis had found that 50 lakh people will benefit per day from the road. Asked how this figure was calculated, officials said the numbers were based on regional mobility and service population analysis. “The project serves a combined projected population of approximately 2.15–2.20 crore (21-22 million) across Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” an official said, adding, “The estimate represents a reasonable proportion (around 25%) of the population benefiting through improved connectivity, reduced travel time, and enhanced transport efficiency.“The protests over the road highlights the gap between environmental assessments on paper and community experiences. For instance, although Versova residents say several heritage trees in the Nana Nani park will be cut for the project, the BMC claims otherwise. “A detailed tree inventory was undertaken assessing parameters such as girth, species, and ecological significance. Based on Maharashtra Tree Authority norms, no trees within the project area qualify as heritage trees, as they do not meet the criteria of age, size, rarity, or cultural significance,” said an official. Similarly, while the diversion of 103 hectares of mangrove land will affect many species of birds, small mammals, and insects that make their home there, officials said the project area does not fall within any notified protected area, making wildlife clearances unnecessary. “The nearest protected areas—Sanjay Gandhi National Park (around 4 km away) and Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (around 15 km away)—are at sufficient distance,” an official said. Most of the affected mangroves are categorised as protected or reserved forest. Authorities have also said that almost 37,000 of the 45,000 mangrove trees to be cut will be eventually restored after road work is complete. A 308 crore restoration plan has been given to Mangrove and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation of Maharashtra (Mangrove Foundation), and will include plantation, habitat restoration, biodiversity conservation, shoreline monitoring, and use of advanced technologies for ecological management. Mangrove plantation is challenging, however, and success rates often low. Asked if BMC had successfully restored or planted any significant patch of mangrove, officials pointed to the 1998 mangrove replantation project for the World Bank-aided Ghatkopar & Bhandup Aerated Lagoons projects. That plantation was carried out by Soonabai Phirojsha Godrej Foundation Trust at their Vikhroli land. Still, an official acknowledged that “this project represents restoration at an unprecedented scale.“

They said that only a competent authority, like the BMC, has the right to issue any public notice along Carter Road and other parts of the seaside with regard to walking pets or feeding the local animals.“It appears that some local Bandra residents feel that they own the Bandstand area, and have therefore put up notices like ‘No Pets’, ‘No Cycling’, and ‘No Smoking’,” said Shiraz Ahmad of Humanity World Foundation. “On March 16, we complained to the BMC about these illegal notice boards and it removed some of them. On Saturday, we animal lovers gathered at Carter Road and we also blackened some of the remaining notices in the public spaces.“Sneha Visaria of Just Smile Charitable Trust said: “We assembled peacefully at Carter Road and also displayed our protest banners. While we can understand the ‘No Smoking’ notices since cigarettes are a health hazard, our protest was mainly against the ‘No Pets’ notices. Also, what right does a residents association have to enforce such rules on a public promenade.”Ahmad also complained: “I have seen how some slum children from nearby areas were stopped from entering the promenade by the residents’ body. Mumbai: A 33-year-old man working in the shipping industry was killed after being struck by a train at Ghatkopar station recently. Kurla Govt Railway Police (GRP) have recorded an accidental death and are probing further.The incident occurred on March 27. Narendra Mandre was struck by an Up fast air-conditioned local at platform 4 of Ghatkopar station. He was rushed to the Rajawadi Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. He lived at bhatwadi in Ghatkopar.Police are probing for what purpose was he on the railway tracks when the incident happened. The incident left his head severed from his body, officials said.

Mumbai: A consumer commission in Thane has asked Ola Electric Technologies to replace a defective electric scooter, or provide a full refund following a series of technical failures, citing “sheer deficiency” in customer service.The chronology of events shows the vehicle was not in proper condition and had various defects. “Not disclosing all relevant and necessary information in regard to the service of the vehicle and not removing the defects is a sheer deficiency on the part of the opponent,” it stated. The complainant purchased the scooter in July 2024 for Rs 96,997. On his first ride, just two days after delivery, the vehicle experienced acceleration snags and broke down multiple times. He said during a ride on Aug 29, 2024, the battery level plummeted from 21% to 3% within just 500 meters. It led to a sudden halt of the vehicle, which could have caused a fatal accident, the complainant claimed. The company was also ordered to pay Rs 20,000 for mental agony and hardship and Rs 15,000 for litigation expenses.
