IPL 2026: Ajinkya Rahane backs KKR’s young pace attack after loss

KKR’s campaign has been hampered by a weakened bowling unit. Injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, Matheesha Pathirana’s absence, and Cameron Green’s limited role have reduced their depth. However, the bigger concern is spin, with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy struggling in the opener.SRH are in a similar spot after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite a strong top order, their bowling looks vulnerable without Pat Cummins, placing added pressure on both departments to deliver.

Five players to watch in KKR vs SRH

Abhishek Sharma (SRH)The World No. 1 batter is enduring a torrid time since the start of the T20 World Cup 2026, and it has continued in IPL 2026. Despite a triumphant campaign for India, Abhishek was heavily scrutinised for his dismal showing, even though he scored a 52 in the final. In the opening match of the new IPL season, the left-handed opener failed to fire and was out for 7 off 8 balls. SRH posted 201, but RCB chased it down in just 15.4 overs. The explosive batter will be looking to turn around his fortunes against KKR at Eden. The 25-year-old is now in his eighth season with SRH, and the team will be hoping for another 400-plus season from their star batter after achieving a similar feat in the last two seasons.Varun Chakravarthy (KKR)India’s X-factor in the T20I bowling setup, Varun Chakravarthy also had a below-par T20 World Cup despite finishing as joint highest wicket-taker with teammate Jasprit Bumrah. Most of his wickets came in the early stages of the tournament, with his performances in must-win games not up to the mark. He is now under the scanner again in IPL 2026, as the premier KKR spinner returned dismal figures of 0 for 48 in the high-scoring opener against MI at Wankhede. Varun had three consecutive good seasons for KKR, and the team will be looking to him again for crucial breakthroughs in their first home game.Ishan Kishan (SRH)Ishan Kishan has been the talk of the town in recent months. One of the stars of India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, Ishan is now leading SRH in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins. Continuing his rich vein of form from the World Cup, he started IPL 2026 with a gritty 80 off 38 balls against RCB. Even though his team was beaten comprehensively, Ishan remains a force to reckon with. He will be looking for another big knock on the high-scoring Eden pitch against KKR.Aniket Verma (SRH)Young middle-order batter Aniket Verma showcased his power-hitting in SRH’s season opener against RCB. The 24-year-old smashed four sixes and three fours in his 18-ball 43 late charge to take SRH to a competitive 201/9. Even though the total proved insufficient, Aniket’s power game caught attention. After a decent debut season last year, the youngster will be aiming for another strong campaign.Angkrish Raghuvanshi (KKR)The young keeper-batter was in his element in KKR’s opener, smashing 51 off 29 balls against MI. KKR posted 220/4 at Wankhede, but it was chased down with ease. The 21-year-old will be looking for another good outing this time at home. In his third season with KKR, Raghuvanshi will be aiming for a breakthrough year.

‘Is Rishabh Pant really an opener?’ Kevin Pietersen questions LSG call

NEW DELHI: Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has raised doubts over Rishabh Pant’s decision to promote himself to the top order, suggesting the Lucknow Super Giants skipper may have “gone a little too far ahead” in his batting position.Pant, who was run out for 7 off 9 balls in LSG’s IPL 2026 opener against Delhi Capitals, later indicated he intends to bat in the top order this season. However, Pietersen believes the move could backfire.‘Too much pressure at the top’“When you look at the strength and depth of LSG’s batting, is Rishabh Pant really an opening batter?” Pietersen said. “I think he might have gone a little too far ahead of where he was in the line-up compared to last year.”The former England star pointed out that Pant had earlier dropped down the order but is now looking to move up again, a shift he feels may not be ideal. “He just needs to go out and enjoy his cricket,” Pietersen added, warning that forcing himself into a top-three role could pile unnecessary pressure.“Don’t force yourself into batting at number three. Enjoy the luxury of that position. I think he puts himself under tremendous pressure by opening the batting,” he said.Rizvi earns praise after match-winning knockPietersen also heaped praise on Delhi’s young batter Sameer Rizvi, who turned the game with an unbeaten 70 after the Capitals were reduced to 26/4 in a chase of 142.“He played the situation beautifully, and I’m not surprised,” Pietersen said, recalling his time mentoring the youngster. “This kid is a proper player, and we probably need to invest in him for a period of time.”He emphasised the importance of backing young talent, adding, “When you invest in a player, you need trust that he can pay you back, and he has done exactly that.”According to Pietersen, Rizvi’s match-winning effort under pressure in a season opener carries more weight than scoring freely in a high-scoring game, underlining his temperament and potential.

Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has approached the Colombo District Court seeking legal intervention to allow him to play in the 2026 Indian Premier League. Thushara has filed a case against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), requesting that the board be ordered to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for his participation. The matter was heard in court today and is scheduled for a full hearing on April 9. In his petition, Thushara has named SLC President Shammi Silva, Secretary Bandula Dissanayake, Treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda, and CEO Ashley de Silva as defendants. Thushara, who was picked by Royal Challengers for the 2026 IPL, highlighted that he had previously played in the 2024 and 2025 editions after receiving NOCs from SLC. However, the board has refused to grant the 2026 NOC, citing that he did not meet the prescribed fitness standards. The pacer maintains that his contract with SLC ended on March 31, 2026, and that he had already informed the board of his decision not to renew it and to step away from international cricket. He argued that he had also been informed he would not be selected for national duties, making the refusal to issue an NOC on fitness grounds unreasonable. Thushara further stated that his current fitness levels are consistent with those maintained throughout his career and that similar standards had not prevented SLC from issuing NOCs in the past. He warned that failing to obtain the NOC would force him to be replaced by his IPL franchise, resulting in a loss of income and career opportunities. Through the court, Thushara is seeking a declaration confirming his entitlement to the NOC, along with interim and permanent orders directing SLC to issue the certificate, ensuring his eligibility for the IPL and other overseas leagues. The court has fixed the next hearing for April 9.

NEW DELHI: The new season of the Indian Premier League is in full swing. All ten teams have played one match each after five days of action. IPL 2026 began with high-scoring affairs, with the first two games over the weekend producing 200-plus totals, but it took a sharp turn in the next three games this week — all of them low to modest totals. One trend emerging from these five games is that, irrespective of totals — low, modest, or high — chasing teams have come out triumphant. It will be interesting to see if this continues through the tournament. If so, the toss could become increasingly crucial for every team.

Sameer Rizvi on batting approach: simple mindset, big impact for DC

So far, all five matches have been played under lights. However, day games are limited, with each team scheduled to play just two, where the dew factor won’t be a factor and the chasing advantage may reduce. The pattern is worrying for bowlers. Except for Punjab Kings vs Gujarat Titans, which went down to the wire, the rest have been largely one-sided chases. Even on Wednesday, when Delhi Capitals were reduced to 26/4 inside the Powerplay by Lucknow Super Giants while chasing 141, a partnership between Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs sealed the game with 17 balls to spare.Close chases add excitement, but one-sided pursuits tend to dull the contest for fans.Let’s delve deeper into IPL 2026 trends so far:Game 1: RCB beat SRH by six wicketsDefending champions RCB hosted SRH at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL 2026 opener. After being put in, SRH recovered from 29/3 through Ishan Kishan (80 off 38) and Heinrich Klaasen (31), with Aniket Verma’s 43 pushing them to 201/9. In reply, despite an early setback, Virat Kohli (69 off 38) and Devdutt Padikkal (61 off 26) stitched a 101-run stand as RCB chased it down in just 15.3 overs.Game 2: MI beat KKR by six wicketsKKR posted 220/4 riding on Ajinkya Rahane’s 67 and Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s 51. But MI openers Rohit Sharma (78) and Ryan Rickelton (81) added 148 in 12 overs, making the chase straightforward as they got home with five balls to spare.Game 3: RR beat CSK by eight wicketsIn Guwahati, RR bowlers Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger dismantled CSK for 127. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi then smashed a stunning 52 off 17 balls, adding 75 with Yashasvi Jaiswal, as RR chased the target in just 12.1 overs.Game 4: PBKS beat GT by three wicketsGT managed 162/6 with contributions across the order. PBKS looked comfortable at 110/2 before a collapse to 118/6, triggered by Prasidh Krishna. However, Cooper Connolly’s unbeaten 72 ensured a tense win in the final over.Game 5: DC beat LSG by six wicketsLSG were bowled out for 141, with Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan starring. DC slipped to 26/4, but Sameer Rizvi (70) and Tristan Stubbs (39) added an unbeaten 119-run stand to seal victory in 17.1 overs.Early signs suggest chasing is king in IPL 2026 — but the bigger question is, will it last?

'I don’t mind a bit of pressure': ‘Calm’ Cooper Connolly announces arrival
Punjab Kings’ Cooper Connolly celebrates his half-century. (ANI Photo)

NEW CHANDIGARH: He woke up in the morning with nerves on Tuesday. “Which I was really happy about,” Cooper Connolly said after leading Punjab Kings to a three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans. For Connolly, it wasn’t the nerves, but the “happiness” about having them. That small detail captures something essential about this 22-year-old from Perth. He doesn’t run from pressure. And on Tuesday night in New Chandigarh, he walked out to bat like a man arriving exactly where he was always meant to be.

SUBSCRIBE NOW!By the time he was done, Connolly had scored an unbeaten 72 off 44, guided Punjab to their first win of IPL-2026, taking Player of the Match honours on IPL debut, and left his new teammate Yuzvendra Chahal making declarations on his behalf.“He’s only 20 something but has the hunger to excel on the big stage,” Chahal said in the post-match presser. “The way he performed in his very first match, batting at No. 3, playing a match-winning innings, shows how mature he is mentally.”Awareness is a word that comes up often around Connolly. It is there in how he builds an innings and in how he resists the urge to overhit. He describes himself as: “I’m just more of a tempo player, try to feel the flow of my hands, I don’t hit too many big sixes, it’s more about timing.”Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer offered something more considered than ordinary praise. “I’ve seen him in the past as well, playing for Australia. He’s got a great mindset and hopefully he continues with the same form,” Iyer said.Connolly has modelled himself after Shaun Marsh, the former Australian left-handed opening batsman who too came from Western Australia like Connolly. There is also something poetic that Connolly now plays for the very franchise Marsh once represented. “Shaun Marsh played for the Punjab Kings, and I grew up watching him. It’s sort of an honour to play for the same franchise as him,” Connolly said.Connolly also credited Punjab head coach Ricky Ponting for easing the pressure on him. “Ricky Ponting just kept me calm and collected,” Connolly said. “He told me to play my game, go out there and dominate. It was a nice team performance. We were very strong with the ball and made things easier for ourselves.”

Poll

Do you believe Cooper Connolly will continue to perform well under pressure in future matches?

Connolly traces his journey through the WACA’s (Western Australia Cricket Association) development pipeline. He is part of a generation that came of age in the Big Bash League’s glare, while still respecting the grind of Sheffield Shield cricket. He also captained Australia at the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup.His big-match temperament was first seen in the 2022-23 BBL final, where he hit an unbeaten 25 off 11 balls in just his second T20 innings to lift Perth Scorchers to the title. His first-class debut arrived in the 2023-24 Sheffield Shield final against Tasmania, where he scored 90 in the first innings as Western Australia won the title. First big-format match, high pressure game and a game-changing knock. There is a pattern here, and it is not coincidental. “I actually don’t mind a bit of pressure. I feel like that suits the sort of style of person I am,” Connolly stated.

NEW DELHI: Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami continued to make a strong statement, even as Lucknow Super Giants slumped to a six-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2026 season opener at the Ekana Stadium on Wednesday.Shami, who has been out of the national setup for over a year, struck with the very first ball of the Capitals’ chase, dismissing KL Rahul for a golden duck. In doing so, he etched his name into the record books, becoming the first bowler in IPL history to claim five first-ball wickets — a feat unmatched in the tournament’s 18-year history. He finished with tidy figures of 1 for 28 in four overs, once again underlining his rhythm and control despite LSG’s overall struggles. His early strike set the tone as LSG reduced Delhi to 26 for 4, but the advantage slipped away soon after.Earlier ahead of the match, Shami had made it clear that retirement is far from his mind. Speaking recently, the 35-year-old reiterated that he would only step away from the game when he feels “bored,” not due to age, injuries or selection snubs. “The day I feel lazy or bored, I will quit. But I am neither bored nor lazy. I am enjoying the game,” he said, reaffirming his hunger.

Most first-ball wicket in IPL

  • 5 – Mohammed Shami
  • 3 – Pravin Kumar
  • 3 – Umesh Yadav
  • 3 – Trent Boult
  • 3 – Lasith Malinga
  • 3 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  • 3 – Ashok Dinda
  • 3 – Pat Cummins

Despite his efforts, LSG could not capitalise. A fighting unbeaten 70 from Sameer Rizvi, alongside Tristan Stubbs (39), saw Delhi Capitals recover from early trouble and chase down 142 with ease.LSG’s problems began earlier in the evening with a disappointing batting display. Contributions were hard to come by as DC’s bowlers, led by Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan, dismantled the lineup to restrict them to 141 in 18.4 overs. While the result did not go in their favour, Shami’s milestone and continued form offered a significant positive for LSG. As questions remain over his absence from the Indian side, the veteran pacer is letting his performances do the talking — and history is taking note.

Sanjiv Goenka–Rishabh Pant exchange goes viral after LSG loss, sparks fresh IPL storm
Sanjiv Goenka and Rishabh Pant (X)

Lucknow Super Giants found themselves under early pressure in IPL 2026 after a disappointing six-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals at home, a result that not only exposed batting concerns but also sparked conversation off the field. LSG struggled to get going with the bat, folding for just 141 in their opening game. The top order failed to deliver, with captain Rishabh Pant scoring 7, Aiden Markram managing 11, and Nicholas Pooran contributing only 8. While the bowlers made early inroads, Delhi turned the chase around through a composed unbeaten 70 from Sameer Rizvi and a steady 39 not out from Tristan Stubbs, sealing the game with 2.5 overs to spare. However, it was what followed after the match that drew just as much attention. LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen in an on-field conversation with Pant, with head coach Justin Langer also part of the discussion. While no audio was available, the visuals suggested an intense exchange, and the clip quickly gained traction across social media. The moment inevitably brought back memories of a similar incident involving Goenka and former LSG captain KL Rahul during the 2024 season. That episode, widely viewed as a public fallout after a defeat, had drawn criticism at the time, and comparisons resurfaced following the latest visuals. Despite the speculation, Goenka struck a measured tone in his public response. Taking to X after the game, he backed his side and urged patience.

“This is a long season, and moments like these are part of building something meaningful. I have full confidence in our captain and the team to respond with strength. To our fans, thank you for your support at Ekana today, we will come back stronger. The story of @LucknowIPL this season is far from written,” he wrote. On the tactical front, Pant’s decision to promote himself to the top of the order also became a talking point. Having largely operated in the middle order in recent seasons, the move did not pay off in the opener. Pant was run out for 7 at the non-striker’s end after Mukesh Kumar got a fingertip deflection onto a powerful straight drive from Mitchell Marsh. When asked if he would continue opening alongside Markram and Marsh, Pant kept his options open. “It’s a 50-50 call,” he said after the match. With questions emerging around team balance, batting roles, and the early loss, LSG now face a crucial phase as they look to settle into the season and respond strongly in the games ahead.

Cameron Green breaks silence with action after Rahane’s cricket Australia remark | Cricket News

Cameron Green bowling in the nets ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad has quickly become a major talking point. It comes just days after the Australian all-rounder did not bowl in KKR’s opening defeat to the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, where the team failed to defend 221 and concerns over their bowling balance came into focus. The situation gained traction after KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane was asked about Green’s absence with the ball and replied, “That question you need to ask Cricket Australia.” He also admitted that Green’s bowling would add balance to the side, turning what seemed like a tactical call into a wider debate about workload management, franchise planning, and the influence of national boards during the IPL. Cricket Australia soon clarified their stance, stating that there was no last-minute restriction. Green, they explained, has been managing a lower back issue and is gradually building up his bowling workload. The franchise was reportedly aware of this plan before the tournament began, with a rough timeline of 10 to 12 days set for his return as a bowling option. This shifted the narrative from confusion to careful rehabilitation. Against that backdrop, Green bowling in the nets carries weight. It does not confirm that he will immediately resume full duties in matches, but it signals progress after a week in which the issue threatened to overshadow KKR’s campaign. For a player signed for a massive ₹25.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction, expectations have naturally been centred around his full all-round contribution rather than just his batting. The timing is crucial for KKR. Green was brought in to provide balance across departments, and his absence as a bowler in the opening game exposed a gap that the opposition exploited. The debate that followed also raised a larger question about how much control franchises truly have over high-value players when fitness and workload are being monitored externally. For now, the situation appears to be moving forward. The controversy began with Green not bowling when KKR needed options, intensified with Rahane’s public remarks, and has now entered a more hopeful phase, with the all-rounder back practising with the ball. Whether that translates into match overs in the coming games remains to be seen, but it has at least eased some of the early pressure surrounding one of KKR’s biggest signings.

NEW DELHI: The meteoric rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is no longer just a feel-good breakout story; it is rapidly turning into a serious selection debate, with growing chatter around a potential India debut in the upcoming Zimbabwe T20I series.Just days after turning 15, the Rajasthan Royals prodigy delivered a stunning statement, smashing a blistering 15-ball half-century against Chennai Super Kings. The knock not only showcased his fearless intent but also reinforced why he is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket today.

A Father’s Pride: How RR, Dravid & Vikram Shaped Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Remarkably, this came on the back of a 35-ball IPL century last season, underlining that his performances are far from a one-off.Chasing a modest target of 128, Sooryavanshi ensured there was nothing modest about his approach. Taking full advantage of the powerplay, he tore into the bowlers, racing to 52 off just 17 balls in a dazzling display of strokeplay. Alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, he laid the foundation for a dominant chase, effectively sealing the game within the first six overs.Explaining his aggressive mindset, the teenager said, “I think of defending, but the plan was to decide the game in the powerplay as we’d restricted them to a low score. If the bowlers had bowled well in the powerplay then the game might have turned their way, but we went all out in the powerplay.” It was a mature assessment, reflecting not just raw talent but also a growing understanding of match situations.

Zimbabwe tour perfect launchpad for India debut

With India scheduled to tour Zimbabwe in July 2026 for a three-match T20I series, the timing of his rise could prove significant. Historically, tours to Zimbabwe have served as a platform for fresh faces to break into the national side. Players such as Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, and more recently Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel have all made their T20I debuts there.Players to debut in Zimbabwe T20I series over the last decade

  • Tushar Deshpande – 2024
  • B Sai Sudharsan – 2024
  • Abhishek Sharma – 2024
  • Dhruv Jurel – 2024
  • Riyan Parag – 2024
  • Dhawal Kulkarni – 2016
  • Barinder Sran – 2016
  • Rishi Dhawan – 2016
  • Mandeep Singh – 2016
  • KL Rahul – 2016
  • Yuzvendra Chahal – 2016
  • Jaydev Unadkat – 2016
  • Sanju Samson – 2015
  • Stuart Binny – 2015
  • Kedar Jadhav – 2015
  • Manish Pandey – 2015
  • Axar Patel – 2015
  • Sandeep Sharma – 2015

Given India’s packed international calendar and the team management’s tendency to rotate squads after major tournaments, the Zimbabwe series presents a realistic opportunity to test emerging talent. Sooryavanshi, with his explosive style and growing confidence, fits that bill perfectly.

Experts divided as calls grow to fast-track Sooryavanshi

Unsurprisingly, a growing chorus of former cricketers is now calling for the youngster to be fast-tracked into India’s T20 setup. Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal believes it is only a matter of time before Sooryavanshi dons the national colours.“In just 8 IPL games, he has been piling records — he already has a hundred. I think in the coming international games for India, he will get a chance after IPL. He will become a young player of the T20 international team. He has proved himself in every place. If he continues to perform, he will definitely get the chance,” Akmal said.He also highlighted the youngster’s maturity, adding, “His presence of mind, game awareness, the way he plays — he has a counter to everything at such a young age. This is remarkable… We are discussing his performance more because it was a low-scoring match of 128. But his performance is visible because he scored 50 runs on 15 balls.”Former India batter Mohammad Kaif, who had earlier urged caution around the hype, has now revised his stance. “Last season I thought Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was getting hyped way too early. An old-school cricketer, I believe there should be no haste in fast-tracking young players. But a year later, I think he is ready to graduate to the next level,” Kaif wrote. He further praised the youngster’s ability to “entertain and play match-winning knocks.Echoing similar sentiments, veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla backed the idea of accelerating his progression. “If he plays like that, I would love to see him fast-tracked,” Chawla said, while also pointing out his consistency across formats and his knack for scoring not just hundreds, but “big hundreds.”Former India batter Ambati Rayudu also weighed in, describing Sooryavanshi as “a cut above a lot of youngsters”. However, Rayudu offered a note of realism, highlighting the challenges of breaking into a settled and successful Indian T20 side. “Don’t forget, our Indian team is a world champion team. It’s won the T20 World Cup. So to replace somebody in that side is not easy. To me, there are a few players ahead of him at the moment, because you tend to pick and build your teams ahead of the next ICC competition,” he said. While the excitement around Sooryavanshi continues to build, not everyone is in favour of rushing his progression. Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged restraint, emphasising the need to manage expectations around a 15-year-old prodigy.“Don’t give him such a target. He is not even a guy, he is a kid,” Ashwin said. Stressing the importance of patience, he added, “If Sooryavanshi plays till 40, he has two and a half decades left in cricket. Leave him alone, he will come on his own when the time is right.”Despite his caution, Ashwin had no doubts about the youngster’s ability. “He is too good to not play for India. He will play anyway eventually. When will he play? For that, we might have to wait a bit. Why are we always in a hurry,” he remarked. As the debate intensifies, the selectors face a delicate balancing act: whether to fast-track a generational talent or allow him the time and space to develop naturally. With the Zimbabwe tour looming, the conversation is only set to grow louder.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued fresh directives to all Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises following a breach of security protocols at a team hotel, making it clear that any further violations will not be tolerated. The move came after Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, currently representing Lahore Qalandars, shared on social media that he was grateful to the PCB for allowing him to meet his family at the team hotel. In response, the PCB sent an official communication to all franchises and stakeholders, stating that players and team officials are not permitted to meet family members at the team hotel without prior approval. The board has mandated that any such requests must be submitted at least 24 hours in advance.
