Thanksgiving 2025: Retailers Closed, Record Travel Forecast, and Black Friday Openings | Business

Holiday guide: What’s open, what’s closed on Thanksgiving Day; major retailers shut as Black Friday prep begins

Americans are set for a mix of family meals and early holiday shopping this week, with most big retailers staying shut on Thanksgiving before reopening at dawn for Black Friday, the unofficial start of the Christmas buying rush. The week also marks what AAA says will be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period on record, according to AP report.Retail, banks and deliveries halted for the holidayMost national retailers — including Walmart, Target, Macy’s, Kohl’s and Costco — will remain closed on Thursday, returning with early openings from 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. on Black Friday. CVS will shut early, and Walgreens will close most stores except select 24-hour locations. Grocery chains will open but many will close ahead of schedule, with timings varying by area.Government offices, post offices, courts and schools will be closed. US banks and stock markets will also shut for the day, reopening on Friday for a shortened trading session that ends at 1 p.m. Eastern. Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will not operate on Thursday, though limited critical services will be available at certain locations.AAA projects 81.8 million Thanksgiving travellersWith schools closed and a long weekend ahead, travel is expected to surge. AAA estimates that 81.8 million people will journey at least 50 miles between Nov. 25 and Dec. 1 — 1.6 million more than last year and a potential new record. Nearly 73 million will travel by car, aided by petrol prices holding near $3 a gallon, slightly below last Thanksgiving’s average.About 6 million Americans are expected to fly domestically, a 2% rise from 2024, though cancellations or delays could shift the final count. Another 2.5 million travellers will rely on buses, trains or cruise ships, marking an 8.5% increase from last year. For many households, Thursday offers a quiet holiday — before the weekend turns into one of the year’s busiest on the roads, at airports and at shop entrances.

Karnataka CM row: Siddaramaiah wants high command to decide soon; Jarkiholi confirms push citing DKS' ambition

NEW DELHI: Amid reports of leadership reshuffle, Karnataka minister Satish Jarkiholi on Wednesday said chief minister Siddaramaiah has asked the Congress high command to take an early call on the question of leadership change in the state.Jarkiholi, who handles the public works portfolio, told reporters that he plans to seek an appointment with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the matter. He said the issue of succession must be settled by the party’s national leadership and revealed that Siddaramaiah too prefers a swift decision.According to Jarkiholi, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar has openly expressed his desire to take over as chief minister since the beginning of the government’s term, though the party chose Siddaramaiah for the top job. He said the final call rests with the high command but added that the chief minister’s remarks make the situation more urgent.“When CM says it, then seniors in the party should take note of it,” he stated. However, he maintained that no internal discussions have taken place among MLAs on a possible leadership shift. “There is no discussion about leadership change in the party. Once it comes up then we will discuss but there is no discussion about it in the party right now,” Jarkiholi said.He also confirmed that he plans to meet Kharge soon to share his views. On speculation around Shivakumar’s active outreach, he remarked that the deputy chief minister has met several people both formally and informally, and added that he too had met him.Responding to home minister G Parameshwara’s claim that he should also be considered for chief ministership, Jarkiholi said Parameshwara had served as Pradesh Congress Committee chief for five years. “I had said in Belagavi that there is nothing wrong in making such claims. So he too is senior but who will decide finally? It happens in Delhi. All that we can do is just make a claim”.Jarkiholi also indicated that Siddaramaiah’s role would remain important even after any future transition. “We (Congress) will require CM Siddaramaiah’s leadership, his service and guidance even after his retirement from the active politics”.The leadership tussle between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar has intensified in recent months, with party sources claiming Shivakumar has been pushing to be named the next chief minister. According to insiders, he also held a one hour meeting with Jarkiholi at a private hotel.(With inputs form PTI)

Ambernath polls: Shrikant Shinde seeks mandate on development, holds 6 rallies in a day | Thane News

KALYAN: Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde has intensified his campaign in Ambernath ahead of the upcoming municipal council elections to be held on December 2, asserting that he is seeking votes purely on the strength of the extensive development works carried out in the city.Dr. Shinde addressed six rallies across various parts of Ambernath in a single day on Tuesday, presenting a unified message that development—not rhetoric—will be the face of his campaign. He highlighted several completed and ongoing projects that, he said, have transformed the city’s public spaces and civic infrastructure. The MP emphasized that modern urban citizens require more than basic utilities. He cited the upgradation of Nehru Park, Gavdevi Ground, and multiple community gardens as examples of improved public spaces. He also mentioned the ongoing construction of a major indoor–outdoor sports complex on the west side of the city. The beautification of the thousand-year-old Shiva temple precinct, expected to finish within few months, and the recent inauguration of a new theatre were also highlighted.Dr. Shinde pointed to the success of the medical college in Ambernath, which recently completed its first year, with two batches of students now enrolled. He noted that several libraries and the UPSC-MPSC study centre are helping thousands of aspirants and modern shooting range in city.He further announced plans to set up a large modern hospital in Ambernath modeled on the ‘no cash counter’ concept implemented in Ulhasnagar, where treatment is provided free of financial burden. With nearly 30 lakh people residing in the Kalyan constituency, Dr. Shinde said water and healthcare remain top priorities. He mentioned ongoing work on Chikhloli dam and proposed projects on Kalu and poshir rivers. Metro, connectivity, and road projects are being pushed forward with support from the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister. The MP said the voters of Ambernath clearly understand the work done by Shiv Sena, and those spreading negativity will receive their answer from the public at the ballot box.Dr. Shinde expressed that I wanted that Shiv Sena and BJP should ihave contested the polls together under the Mahayuti banner. But it was not possible due to some reason. However, since it was not possible this time, Shiv Sena is independently seeking a mandate based entirely on its developmental achievements. He concluded by expressing confidence that, just as the people supported him in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, they will once again give Shiv Sena a strong mandate in the municipal polls.

‘I was nervous in the first Test’: Marco Jansen reveals how he destroyed India with match-winning 6-fer | Cricket News

'I was nervous in the first Test': Marco Jansen reveals how he destroyed India with match-winning 6-fer
South Africa’s Marco Jansen (PTI Photo/Shahbaz Khan)

South Africa’s dominant tour of India found its perfect symbol in Marco Jansen, who walked away with the Player of the Match award after a brilliant all round display that shaped the 408 run win in Guwahati. The tall left arm quick produced a sensational 6 for 48 in the first innings and then added a vital 93 with the bat in South Africa’s imposing total of 489. His effort set the tone for a victory that completed a 2 0 series sweep and delivered South Africa their first Test series win in India since 2000.Jansen said the win felt extra special because of where it came. “Winning any game is a nice feeling and winning in India is special. It’s a team performance. We spoke about sticking to our own things. If it works it works,” he said after the match. He also credited head coach Shukri Conrad for giving him confidence at a time when he felt nervous. “Got to give credit to Shuks, he told me to go out and play my game, I was nervous in the first Test,” he admitted.

‘As good as a win’: Ravindra Jadeja on India’s plans after South Africa set mountain to climb ahead of Day 5

South Africa’s performance across the two Tests was built on collective clarity. Jansen said the team left nothing to chance in their preparation. “Everyone is working hard, our prep as a team and in an individual capacity. We see where we can get better and on the field we give our best.”Jansen was part of a complete team effort that overwhelmed India from the start. Senuran Muthuswamy struck his maiden Test hundred, Tristan Stubbs played two mature innings including a gritty 94 in the second dig, and Simon Harmer dominated with the ball to finish with 6 for 37 and the Player of the Series award. The visitors posted 489 in the first innings and then bowled India out for 201 before choosing not to enforce the follow on. Their second-innings 260 for 5 declared set India a target of 549. India folded for 140 on the final day, with Ravindra Jadeja’s fighting 54 offering the only resistance. The win marked many historic milestones. It was South Africa’s biggest victory over India by runs, India’s heaviest defeat in Test cricket and the first time in 25 years that the Proteas have won a Test series on Indian soil. It was also India’s second home whitewash under Gautam Gambhir after last year’s 0 3 loss to New Zealand.Jansen’s rise continues to be one of South Africa’s finest stories. In Kolkata he looked nervous, unsure and still searching for rhythm. In Guwahati he looked like a complete force: tall, fast, confident and destructive. He leaves the Test series with the biggest prize of all, having delivered one of the most decisive match winning performances by a South African in India.

KDMC begins makeover of garbage-prone spots; aims to end open dumping | Thane News

KALYAN: The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s Solid Waste Management Department has launched a special initiative to clean and beautify locations where garbage is repeatedly dumped, known as Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs). The campaign is being carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Abhinav Goel.According to Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management, Ramdas Kokre, the objective is to eliminate open dumping completely by transforming these garbage-prone spots into clean, attractive spaces. He appealed to citizens to hand over waste only to the municipal ghantagadi collection vans instead of throwing it on roads, open plots or public spaces.Earlier, many parts of the city suffered from piles of open garbage, which not only posed a health hazard but also damaged the city’s appearance. In response, the department began identifying the causes of these GVPs and found that most dumping occurred at night in open areas. To curb this, ghantagadi services have now been extended into night hours. The beautification of GVPs has already started at Barave Water Treatment Plant area, Barave village, and Thakurli East station road. While cleaning work in three wards is carried out by municipal staff, contractor Sumeet Elkoplast manages the remaining seven wards. Each GVP will be redesigned through colourful rangoli patterns, wall murals, decorative planters made from recycled tyres, ornamental plants and patches of greenery. The goal is to discourage citizens from dumping waste and to enhance the city’s aesthetics. The corporation aims to convert all GVPs across Kalyan-Dombivli into such clean and green spots in the coming months.Kokre also reminded citizens to segregate waste at home and cooperate by ensuring no new dirty spots emerge in their neighbourhoods.Earlier in May 2020, around 3,700 garbage bins across the city were removed and door-to-door collection through ghantagadi was introduced. The new campaign not only strengthens cleanliness but also contributes to creating attractive green corners, improving the overall beauty of Kalyan-Dombivli.

IND vs SA: Aiden Markram smashes world record in Guwahati Test; surpasses Ajinkya Rahane in historic feat | Cricket News

IND vs SA: Aiden Markram smashes world record in Guwahati Test; surpasses Ajinkya Rahane in historic feat

NEW DELHI: Aiden Markram etched his name into cricketing folklore on Wednesday, producing one of the greatest fielding performances in Test history. The South African star became the first cricketer ever to take nine catches as an outfielder in a Test match, breaking the long-standing record of eight held by India’s Ajinkya Rahane.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The milestone came during the second India–South Africa Test in Guwahati, where Markram has turned the slip cordon into his own highlight reel. With India still three wickets away from being bowled out in their second innings, the Proteas vice-captain had the chance to push the record even higher — but his tally of 9 catches already stands unmatched in over 147 years of Test cricket.

‘As good as a win’: Ravindra Jadeja on India’s plans after South Africa set mountain to climb ahead of Day 5

Markram’s record-breaking display began with five sharp catches in the first innings, showcasing his anticipation and safe hands. On Day 5, he added two more in the morning session, taking his tally to seven. One more in the afternoon equalled Rahane’s world record of eight — and soon after, he went one better, claiming No. 9 to own the fielding record outright. Before Markram’s extraordinary performance, the South African record was held jointly by Bert Vogler, who took six catches against England way back in 1910. That mark was later matched by Bruce Mitchell (1931), Jacques Kallis (2012), Graeme Smith (2012), and most recently David Bedingham in early 2025. None came close to touching the global record — until Markram.Rahane’s eight catches, taken in Galle in 2015, had stood untouched for a decade. He completed three in Sri Lanka’s first innings and five in the second, a benchmark many believed would remain unchallenged for years. Markram’s feat has now rewritten that chapter.

Most catches as a fielder in a Test match

  • 9 – Aiden Markram (SA) vs IND, Guwahati, 2025
  • 8 – Ajinkya Rahane (IND) vs SL, Galle, 2015
