Will probe how CDR in arrested astrologer Ashok Kharat case landed in private hands: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis | Mumbai News

Nashik: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the state home portfolio, said on Sunday that the government will conduct an inquiry into how the Call Detail Records (CDR) of rape-accused astrologer Ashok Kharat landed in the hands of private individuals. Fadnavis also stated that Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken cognisance of Kharat’s bank accounts and properties, noting that the agency’s inquiry is already underway. The CDR issue comes against the backdrop of claims made by activist Anjali Damania on April 3. Damania alleged that she received CDRs from anonymous sources showing that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made 17 calls to Kharat in the past. Several other politicians also allegedly contacted Kharat during an unspecified period, she claimed. A political row has erupted over Damania’s claims, with Shiv Sena ministers and leaders questioning how sensitive information was leaked to a third party and whether it was part of an attempt to politically corner Shinde.Fadnavis told reporters on the sidelines of a ‘Sant Sammelan’ in Nashik, “First of all, obtaining CDRs falls within the exclusive domain of investigating agencies. The state govt will definitely inquire into how the CDR was leaked and who leaked it to private individuals.”Fadnavis said the judicial system relies on strong evidence rather than private conversations. “Justice demands strong evidence, not just allegations and counter-allegations or who contacted whom. Action will be taken only against those who were party to the heinous crimes committed by Ashok Kharat,” the CM said.Asked about the ED inquiry into Kharat’s properties and accounts, he said, “The SIT is doing a good job and has unearthed many details about Kharat. The SIT has won the confidence of the people, who are coming forward to register complaints—12 so far—and share information. According to my information, the ED has started its inquiry after taking cognisance of the findings so far. Once the land properties are mapped, the state government will also take appropriate steps. While addressing the gathering of seers and sages, Fadnavis added that the govt is spending Rs 30,000 crore—an amount that could rise to Rs 35,000 crore—to develop infrastructure in the city for the forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela.

Police bust gas cylinder theft racket across Mumbai Metropolitan Region | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Powai police busted a gas cylinder theft racket operating across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, seized 45 stolen gas cylinders and arrested a habitual offender involved in multiple theft cases.Police said the racket came to light after a motorcycle theft was registered at Powai Police Station. During the investigation, police found that the stolen two-wheeler was used to carry out gas cylinder thefts at various locations. Based on technical surveillance and inputs from informants, police arrested Raj Chandrakant Kamble (18), a resident of Thane, and recovered the stolen motorcycle used in the crimes. The accused was involved in at least 15 theft cases registered across several police stations. A Powai police officer said that during the probe they found out that the gang got activated and was involved in stealing gas cylinders ever since the Iran war broke out. The stolen cylinders are sold at higher price to those who want the cylinder immediately. “LPG cylinder thefts have increased in Mumbai amid shortages caused by West Asia conflict-related supply disruptions. Major incidents include 27 cylinders stolen from a parked delivery tempo in Charkop and the recovery of 45 cylinders by Powai police. Residents have resorted to chaining cylinders for security,” said the officer.

Fresh objections to 52 MLD tank plan in Malabar Hill | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Days after TOI reported about how the BMC has zeroed in on a 52 MLD alternate tank as part of its Malabar Hill reservoir reconstruction plan, residents have raised fresh red flags over its potential environmental cost. At a meeting held on Sunday evening, locals voiced concerns that the proposed alternate tank could once again come at the expense of the area’s green cover. The project is likely to involve the cutting and transplantation of several trees — an assurance that residents say does little to allay fears about long-term ecological damage. The residents have now decided to formally write to the civic body, objecting to the proposal and questioning the need and rationale behind the plan. The concerns echo an earlier flashpoint. In Sept 2023, the BMC was forced to shelve its plan to completely demolish and rebuild the reservoir after widespread public opposition, as the move threatened the iconic Hanging Gardens located above it. Authorities subsequently pivoted to a phased repair strategy, which hinges on the alternate reservoir being made operational first.“There is no need for an alternate tank. The reservoir can be repaired in phases by isolating sections, with the remaining capacity proving sufficient. We will write to the BMC and seek a meeting on the issue. This is a large project that will impact the entire locality. No expert has stated that an alternate tank must be built at the same site,” said a resident present at the meeting.Last week, the civic water supply projects department presented multiple options for AJ alternate water tank, of which a three-level structure—comprising an underground tank, a ground-level tank, and an upper-level tank—was selected. Under the plan, water will be routed through the ground-level tank and pumped upward to ensure uninterrupted supply when sections of the existing reservoir are shut for repairs.

IPL 2026: Hat-trick of losses for CSK as RCB run riot in Bengaluru | Cricket News

IPL 2026: Hat-trick of losses for CSK as RCB run riot in Bengaluru

NEW DELHI: Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru continued their dream run in IPL 2026 with a commanding 43-run victory over Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, powered by a sensational batting display and timely strikes with the ball.Put in to bat, RCB endured a cautious start on a slightly tacky surface, going boundary-less in the first three overs. Virat Kohli looked the most assured early on, while Phil Salt gradually found his rhythm. The innings gained momentum after the PowerPlay, with Salt (46) and Devdutt Padikkal stitching a crucial stand.

Padikkal then took charge, compiling a fluent 50 off 29 balls to anchor the innings. However, the real carnage unfolded in the death overs. Following Padikkal’s dismissal, skipper Rajat Patidar joined forces with Tim David, and the duo unleashed a brutal assault. David was particularly destructive, smashing an unbeaten 70 off just 25 balls, including eight towering sixes. Patidar played the perfect foil with a blistering 48* off 19 deliveries as RCB surged to a massive 250/3.In reply, CSK’s chase got off to a shaky start. Jacob Duffy struck early to remove both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Ayush Mhatre to leave them reeling. Despite the early setbacks, Sarfaraz Khan launched a stunning counterattack, racing to a 24-ball fifty and propelling CSK to 77 in the PowerPlay.Just when CSK looked to rebuild, Krunal Pandya turned the game on its head, dismissing Sarfaraz with his very first delivery and removing Kartik Sharma soon after. A spectacular one-handed catch by Jitesh Sharma to dismiss Shivam Dube further dented the chase.Though Prashant Veer (43) and Jamie Overton (37) offered resistance, the required rate kept climbing. Bhuvneshwar (3/41) and Krunal (2/36) ensured regular breakthroughs, while Suyash Sharma impressed with his control.CSK were eventually bowled out for 207 in 19.4 overs, falling well short. With this emphatic win, RCB not only extend their winning streak but also reinforce their status as early title contenders. On the other hand, CSK now find themselves at the bottom of the table with three back-to-back defeats in the new season. Brief score: RCB 250/3 (20 overs) beat CSK 207 all out (19.4 overs) by 43 runs

‘Bitter defeat for US’: Iran hails strike on aircraft as victory after second F-15 pilot rescued

Iran hails strike on aircraft as victory after second F-15 pilot rescued

Iran on Sunday claimed a “bitter defeat” for the United States in southern Isfahan following the rescue of a second F-15 crew member, who went missing after Tehran downed the jet.According to news agency ANI, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said the incident exposed “the hollow nature of the American military and the humiliating failure of its forces.

He added, “Trump tries to justify the bitter defeat of his feeble army by creating confusion for public opinion.” As per Press TV, Zolfaghari highlighted that Iranian forces had shot down a C-130-class aircraft involved in the operation.Zolfaghari described Iran’s action as a clear example of its forces’ “courageous” and “heroic” defence against what he called US aggression.“We had previously warned that the brave fighters of the nation in the armed forces, with God’s help, would cut down any invader and utterly crush the aggressors. The decisive victory of Iranian forces in southern Isfahan is a clear example of this courageous action,” he said.

US hails “most daring” rescue mission

While Iran called it a victory, President Donald Trump hailed the mission as a triumph for the US military. In a social media post, Trump wrote that the rescued aviator was injured but “will be just fine,” and praised the operation as “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in US History.” He confirmed that dozens of aircraft, armed with “the most lethal weapons,” were deployed after two Black Hawk helicopters were reportedly targeted by local Iranian forces.Trump said, “This is the first time in military memory that two US Pilots have been rescued, separately, deep in Enemy Territory. We will never leave an American warfighter behind!” He also claimed the operation proved US “overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies.”

Clash escalates amid ongoing war

The rescue comes amid escalating US-Iran tensions. The conflict began with joint US-Israel strikes on February 28 and has since killed thousands, disrupted shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, and driven up fuel prices. Both sides have hit civilian targets, raising concerns over possible war crimes.Iran’s state TV, citing the joint military command, said two Black Hawk helicopters and a C-130 transport aircraft were shot down in Isfahan during the US operation, with images showing smoke rising from a desert area. Iranian tribesmen also opened fire on American helicopters during the mission.Meanwhile, regional diplomatic efforts are ongoing. Egypt’s foreign minister Badr Abdelatty and Pakistan’s foreign ministry have both engaged with US and Iranian officials to explore de-escalation measures, warning of a potential “unprecedented explosion” in the Middle East.Aid agencies warn that the ongoing conflict is disrupting food and medicine deliveries. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation said that if hostilities continue through June, an additional 45 million people could face acute hunger, adding to the 320 million already at risk globally.

Deonar dump clean-up inches forward with crucial CRZ clearance | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Nearly seven months after appointing a contractor for the ₹2,000-crore plus clean-up of the century-old Deonar landfill, the civic body has received a crucial nod from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), before work can begin on ground. With this what remains now is only a nod from the High Court and another Consent to Operate (CTO) from the Maharashtra Pollution Control board (MPCB) said officials. The MCZMA clearance, granted at the authority’s 195th meeting held on March 25, 2026, falls under the provisions of the CRZ Notification 2019 and comes with a comprehensive set of environmental safeguards. As per the approval, only the removal of legacy waste will be permitted within Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas, strictly for restoration purposes, while all project-related infrastructure and operations must be located outside CRZ limits. The authority has placed strong emphasis on protecting the coastal ecosystem, explicitly prohibiting mangrove cutting and directing the BMC to obtain prior approval from the Bombay High Court, since a portion of the site falls within a 50-metre mangrove buffer zone. The conditions also mandate that no solid or liquid waste be discharged into nearby creeklets or coastal stretches, and that leachate generated during the biomining process be treated through facilities set up beyond CRZ boundaries, with an aim of achieving zero liquid discharge. The contractor has also been instructed to ensure that natural streams, water bodies, and coastal geomorphology remain undisturbed, while also putting in place adequate measures to control dust emissions and odour during the remediation process. In addition, the BMC will have to establish a dedicated environmental monitoring mechanism involving experts in solid waste management, pollution control, and mangrove conservation, and implement the Environment Management Plan in line with the project’s impact assessment report. Permissions from the Mangrove Cell and other statutory authorities will also have to be secured before work is initiated. The Deonar dumping ground, spread over nearly 120 hectares, is one of the oldest and largest dumping grounds in India, receiving waste since 1927. Despite partial capping large portions of legacy waste continue to pose environmental and public health risks, including periodic fires, methane emissions and leachate seepage into nearby areas. Civic officials indicated that once all approvals, including those related to mangroves and court permissions, are in place, the project though could begin prior to monsoons but then it may not be possible to carry out any works during the rains. “During rains, the solid waste gathers moisture making it difficult to carry any kind of works. Although the bioremdidiation tender is inclusive of monsoons,” said a civic official. The contract period is set for three years, which includes the time for mobilisation and the monsoon period.

Environmentalists urge BMC to stop construction firm from cutting trees at Vikhroli’s Godrej Garden in Mumbai | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The large-scale cutting of trees at Godrej Garden in Vikhroli (West) hillside has shocked nature lovers, who have urged the BMC to immediately stop further axing and inquire into this green damage.According to government sources, a construction firm has received permission to cut over 180 trees and transplant 920 others for developmental works. Environmentalists alleged that since April 1, 50 huge trees — some of them over 60 years old — have been chopped along the route going towards Kailash Complex, Hiranandani.Environmentalist D Stalin of NGO Vanashakti said: “A formal complaint has been lodged with BMC’s N ward office and also with the local police, since over 1,000 trees will be impacted at the Vikhroli hillside. This is a sad reflection of how development prevails over trees.”As the complaint was filed recently, BMC officials have not yet given their feedback.“It is really sad to see Mumbai lose its green cover to so-called developmental activities. Both infrastructure projects of the govt and construction projects of the private developers are stripping away Mumbai’s tree cover. Instead of removing the trees, the land owners could have been given TDR to be used somewhere in non-ecologically sensitive areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. At this rate, Mumbai’s temperatures will keep shooting up. We need to protect every single tree standing in Mumbai.” .He added: “All talk of compensatory afforestation is humbug. If an independent audit is done, the truth of 85% failure of transplantation will be exposed. Sadly, the greed to make profits has made people forget their connection with nature.”Activist B N Kumar of NatConnect Foundation said: “While the permission to cut or transplant trees has already been given, the suggestions and objections of the local residents should also be taken. Otherwise, Mumbai seems to be on a hectic tree-cutting and mangrove-cutting spree.”Kumar added: “Mumbai’s per capita tree cover is abysmally low — about one tree for every four persons — against a global benchmark of three trees per person. Urban planners must adopt and adhere to the 3-30-300 rule, which calls for every resident to see at least three trees from their home, live in a neighbourhood with a minimum 30% tree canopy cover, and have access to a green space within 300 metres.”Nature lovers expressed that once trees are killed and ground filled with concrete, some fancy names like “green view” or “urban forest” will be given to the construction. One way or the other, Mumbai’s natural heritage is being decimated and nothing is being done.
