Hong Kong Petrol Prices: Tank full, wallet empty? Hong Kong’s petrol prices worst hit amid Iran war

Tank full, wallet empty? Hong Kong’s petrol prices worst hit amid Iran war

The Middle East war has pushed energy prices higher, affecting lives across the globe. As the crisis has crossed one month, oil prices have stayed beyond the $100 per barrel mark and ripples are visible across the globe. While some countries are encouraging measures to move beyond fuels, others are forced to raise prices, making everyday routine costlier. Residents in Hong Kong are contending with the highest petrol prices in the world, as global energy markets remain under strain and costs continue to climb. At roughly $15.6 per gallon, fuel in the city far exceeds prices seen elsewhere, even as motorists in the United States face their highest rates since 2022.The sharp rise in global oil prices follows escalating tensions involving oil-producing Gulf nations and the disruption of a crucial shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. Over the past month, these developments have driven a surge in oil costs worldwide, placing added pressure on Asian economies that depend heavily on energy supplies routed through the region. The fuel price hike is not new for Hong Kong as the country had already been grappling with steep costs even before the latest crisis. Data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com shows the city has consistently ranked as the most expensive place for petrol, even prior to the conflict involving Iran, CNN reported.Although private vehicles are owned by only about 8.4% of the city’s 7.5 million residents, economists caution that the impact extends beyond motorists. Rising fuel costs are expected to push up logistics expenses, which could filter through to other parts of the economy and contribute to inflation.Authorities have sought to reassure the public on supply stability. Chief Executive John Lee had earlier voiced concern over rising oil prices and said the government would keep a close watch on movements in the market. Officials maintain that supply remains secure, with about 80% of Hong Kong’s oil products sourced from mainland China.“With the advantage of having strong support from the motherland, Hong Kong has been able to maintain a stable energy supply amid energy shortages in many regions and cities around the world,” a Wednesday government press release said as cited by CNN.At the consumer level, the price disparity with mainland China is becoming increasingly apparent. Reports suggest more drivers are crossing the border to refuel, where petrol can cost as little as one-third of Hong Kong prices.Hong Kong has long had relatively low car ownership levels among major cities, a trend shaped by high fuel prices, expensive parking and steep vehicle registration fees. The city’s extensive public transport network continues to serve as the primary mode of travel for most residents.Experts say a combination of high fuel duties and land costs continues to keep petrol prices elevated, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position at the top of global fuel price rankings.

Hardik Pandya gears up to bowl full quota at 2027 ODI World Cup | Cricket News

New Delhi: Hardik Pandya didn’t turn up for either of the two afternoon practice sessions of Mumbai Indians ahead of their Saturday match against Delhi Capitals. Understandably, the Mumbai Indians captain doesn’t want to push his injury-prone body during the gruelling two-month IPL schedule. Hardik, however, is fighting another battle besides planning the campaign for the five-time champions.TOI understands he has been working overtime for the last four months to assure the Indian team management and the selectors that he is ready to bowl his full quota of 10 overs in ODI games beyond the IPL. India’s preparation for the ODI World Cup in Oct-Nov 2027 will be in full swing after the IPL.

Riyan Parag gets honest: handling criticism, captaincy calls & rain chaos

While announcing the team for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand on Jan 3, Indian cricket board (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia mentioned that Hardik was not cleared to bowl 10 overs in a match by the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). The BCCI release also claimed that Hardik was being preserved for the subsequent T20 World Cup. Interestingly, five days later, Hardik bowled 10 overs for figures of 3/66 in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Chandigarh.TOI has learnt that Hardik had reached out to the selectors and the Indian team management in January itself. The team management has conveyed to him that they would prefer his availability to bowl 10 overs leading up to the World Cup in South Africa next year.It must be noted that Hardik suffered a quadriceps injury before the Asia Cup final in September and made a comeback in T20I cricket on Dec 9 in the series against South Africa. Sources told TOI that Hardik had communicated his desire to play in both white-ball formats, but the BCCI took a conservative approach with the T20 World Cup in mind.“Hardik is expected to play a big role in the ODI setup since the World Cup will be played on fast and bouncy pitches in South Africa. He can lend the perfect balance. But he has to convince the selectors and the team management that he will be available to bowl 10 overs. He may not be required to do so in every match. The captain may end up bowling him for 6-7 overs in most matches. But he should be available if the captain needs more from him,” a BCCI source told TOI. “The selectors are also looking at other seam-bowling options. Nitish Kumar Reddy has increased his bowling workload in domestic cricket as well,” the source added.

Poll

What role do you think Hardik will play in the ODI setup?

Hardik has been putting in the hard yards at the CoE and beyond. He shuttles between Mumbai and Baroda to train with his own dedicated team. “Hardik has been increasing his workload. He has worked on his action to bowl in-swingers as well without compromising on pace. That’s why he has been entrusted to bowl with the new ball in T20s. He feels his body is ready to cope with the rigours of bowling 10 overs in ODIs. He understands his body well enough and is working towards staying fit to bowl 10 overs,” the source claimed.

Southern derby at Chinnaswamy: In-form RCB face out-of-sorts CSK | Cricket News

Southern derby at Chinnaswamy: In-form RCB face out-of-sorts CSK

BENGALURU: The southern derby between RCB and CSK has long been one of the IPL’s marquee contests. Of the 35 meetings between the two sides, CSK have won 21 but the narrative shifted last season when RCB, en route their maiden title, completed a double over the five-time champions, a commanding 50-run win in Chennai followed by a thrilling two-run victory at home. The shift in results has mirrored a change in fortunes. RCB, rebuilt around performance and analytics, finally broke their title drought while CSK, in a transitional phase, have exited in the league stage in each of the past two seasons. On Sunday, the two sides meet again at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium under contrasting circumstances. RCB come into the contest on the back of an emphatic win over SRH in their opener while the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK arrive with two defeats in a row, including a five-wicket loss to SRH at home on Friday. There is also a gap in preparation. RCB have had a week to recover and regroup. CSK will take the field less than 48 hours after their previous outing.

Sameer Rizvi on batting approach: simple mindset, big impact for DC

On paper, RCB appear the more settled unit. Their top order looks formidable, with Virat Kohli and Phil Salt complemented by the in-form Devdutt Padikkal. The middle order, featuring skipper Rajat Patidar, Jitesh Sharma, Tim David and Romario Shepherd, provides both stability and firepower. In the bowling department, New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy impressed on debut in the absence of Josh Hazlewood, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar offered steady support. RCB could consider adding a left-arm seam option in Mangesh Yadav while spinners Krunal Pandya andSuyash Sharma will look to improve after a lukewarm start.CSK, once known as the daddy’s arm, now features a younger line-up supported by a few seasoned names such as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube. However, their batting has yet to click consistently. would Gaikwad will need to lead from the front while the likes of Ayush Mhatre — who struck a fluent 78 against SRH — will be expected to build on recent form. The teenager returns to a venue where he announced his arrival last season with a blistering 94.The bigger concern for the visitors, though, is their bowling. In two matches, CSK have conceded 338 runs in 30.5 overs. The new-ball pair of Khaleel Ahmed and Matt Henry have been expensive while the spin attack has also lacked penetration. The absence of MS Dhoni, a central figure in the team, has not helped.

India makes first oil purchase from Iran in 7 years with no payment hurdle

India makes first oil purchase from Iran in 7 years with no payment hurdle
Representative image (AI-generated)

Amid the ongoing Middle East crisis that has disrupted the global oil supply chain, Indian refiners have made their first purchase in seven years since 2019, according to Reuters.India had not received any cargo from Tehran since the US pressured it to halt crude imports, according to the petroleum ministry. This marks the latest development in a significant shift in sourcing strategy.Indian refiners have purchased Iranian oil amid the escalating conflict in West Asia that has disrupted supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer had not received a single cargo from Iran since May 2019 after US sanctions forced a halt to trade. However, recent disruptions linked to the ongoing US-Israel conflict have tightened global supplies, impacting India’s energy security. In a statement, the ministry said, “Amid Middle East supply disruptions, Indian refiners have secured their crude oil requirements, including from Iran; and there is no payment hurdle for Iranian crude imports.”The ministry further assured that India’s crude oil needs for the coming months remain fully secured.

No payment issues, supply fully secured: Government

Dismissing reports that an Iranian oil shipment meant for India was diverted to China due to payment-related hurdles, the government termed such claims “factually incorrect.”Clarifying the situation, the ministry said, “The news reports and social media posts of an Iranian crude cargo being diverted from Vadinar, India to China due to ‘payment issues’ are factually incorrect.”The ministry added that Indian companies enjoy full flexibility in sourcing crude.“India imports crude oil from 40-plus countries, with companies having full flexibility to source oil from different sources and geographies based on commercial considerations.”

Why India stopped buying Iranian oil?

Before sanctions were tightened in 2018, India was among the largest buyers of Iranian crude, importing both Iran Light and Iran Heavy grades due to refinery compatibility and favourable pricing terms. At its peak, Iranian crude accounted for around 11.5 per cent of India’s total imports. In 2018, India imported approximately 518,000 barrels per day of Iranian oil. However, imports declined to about 268,000 bpd between January and May 2019 during a sanctions waiver period, before dropping to zero after the United States ended exemptions and reimposed restrictions.Since then, India has diversified its sourcing basket, shifting to suppliers in the Middle East, the United States and more recently, Russia. The waiver is expected to remain in place until April 19, with an estimated 95 million barrels of Iranian oil currently stored on vessels at sea.Apart from crude, India has also received Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).The ministry confirmed that a vessel carrying around 44,000 metric tonnes of Iranian LPG berthed at the western port of Mangalore on April 2 and is currently discharging fuel.

What a US sanctions waiver could mean for India?

India has not purchased Iranian crude since mid-2019 after the US withdrew sanction waivers. However, the current crisis has brought the possibility of limited relief back into focus.Nearly 35–40 per cent of India’s crude oil imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a route now disrupted due to the ongoing conflict. This has increased urgency for India to secure alternative and reliable supplies. To offset potential shortages, India has ramped up purchases of Russian crude. According to Kpler, the country bought nearly 30 million barrels of Russian oil in a single week after the conflict escalated. If the US were to allow limited “unsanctioned” trade of Iranian oil at sea, it could provide India with another crucial supply source.Energy experts suggest India could quickly step up imports. Sumit Ritolia, Lead Research Analyst at Kpler, highlighted that historically India has been a major buyer due to strong refinery compatibility and favourable commercial terms. He said speculation around easing sanctions has reintroduced Iran as a key variable in global oil flows, adding that India could emerge as a major demand centre alongside China and other Asian buyers.“India could emerge as a key demand centre to watch, alongside Chinese buyers (state-owned enterprises and large independents) and other Asian countries,” he said.

Ayodhya Robbery: Bunty & Babli from Ayodhya commit perfect crime with fake gun, nabbed | Lucknow News

LUCKNOW: In a sensational daylight robbery on Thursday, a burqa-clad woman looted a jewellery shop in Ayodhya, threatening the man on cash counter with a pistol and decamping with a Rs 3.6 lakh gold chain with the help of her boyfriend who was waiting outside the shop on a motorcycle. On Friday, police arrested both the accused and disclosed that the burqa-clad accused was a Hindu, 21-yearold Payal Kori, and her boyfriend, Rahul Kumar (27). She is pregnant and was carrying a toy gun to commit the crime. They were nabbed while allegedly attempting to flee the district. Police said the duo had carefully planned the robbery and used disguise to avoid identification.According to officials, the incident took place around 12:30 pm in the Kothi Bazar area under Rudauli Kotwali limits of Ayodhya.“Payal, wearing a burqa and carrying a backpack, entered a jewellery shop posing as a customer and asked to see a gold necklace and chain. After engaging the shopkeeper in conversation and asking for water and snacks, she waited for the staff to be distracted,” said SSP, Ayodhya, Gaurav Grover. At an opportune moment, she picked up a gold necklace and chain weighing about 26 grams, valued at approximately Rs 3.6 lakh. When the shopkeeper tried to stop her, she pulled out a pistol from her waist and threatened to shoot before fleeing, the SSP added. She ran out of the shop and escaped on a motorcycle driven by Rahul, who was waiting nearby. The entire incident was captured on multiple CCTV cameras installed at the shop and along the escape route.Theft was well planned, say Bunty & BabliPolice formed multiple teams and scanned footage from nearly 60 CCTV cameras to trace the motorcycle’s registration number. This led them to Rahul, and subsequently to Payal. Both were arrested near the Barabanki border.Additional director general of police (Lucknow Zone) Praveen Kumar said the accused were acting like “Bunty and Babli” -characters from Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee-starrer -and had used a toy pistol to carry out the robbery.“During the interrogation, the duo reportedly confessed to planning the crime in advance. Rahul had purchased the burqa and toy gun from the market, while Payal executed the robbery inside the shop,” said SHO, Rudauli, Sanjay Maurya, who conducted the probe.Police said Payal had recently returned to her parental home in Ayodhya to appear for her intermediate examinations, while her husband works in Punjab. Police said that the two had wanted to buy a house by doing heist in the city and had also planned in the adjoining areas.

Middle East War: Hormuz supply crunch: Rising energy prices impact roads, airlines and restaurants

Hormuz supply crunch: Rising energy prices impact roads, airlines and restaurants

As the Middle East war has stretched beyond a month, energy prices have soared sharply, sending ripples across the globe. Iran’s chokehold of Strait of Hormuz has pushed fuel costs higher, hitting energy supplies for major economies. The impact is visible in multiple sectors in India, with higher costs of fuel and petrochemical products feeding into everyday operations. From infrastructure projects to aviation and hospitality, industries are being forced to adjust to a rapidly shifting cost environment. The impact is being felt through rising project expenses, increased operational costs and growing pressure on margins. While some sectors are absorbing part of the burden, others are considering price revisions or recalibrating plans, highlighting how deeply energy costs are influencing business decisions.

Infrastructure

Rising prices of bitumen and fuel shortages have pushed up road construction and maintenance costs in Himachal Pradesh, with per-kilometre costs increasing across projects and maintenance expenses also climbing. The state estimates a cumulative burden of nearly Rs 100 crore and is exploring funding support and project adjustments while maintaining quality.“Light diesel oil and bitumen shortage will hit road tarring and construction costs,” said Public Works Department Minister Vikramaditya Singh.“There is no doubt that global inflation is affecting India as well. The rise in prices of LPG, petrol, diesel and other petrochemical products has directly impacted bitumen and, consequently, road construction costs,” he added.“We may delay some targets depending on the international situation, but we will ensure that quality standards are maintained,” Singh said.

Aviation

Aviation turbine fuel prices have surged sharply, with rates crossing Rs 2 lakh per kilolitre for some carriers. While domestic airlines have been partially shielded through a staggered increase, costs have still risen, adding pressure to an industry where fuel accounts for around 40% of operating expenses.“Due to the closure of Strait of Hormuz and extraordinary situation in global energy markets, the price of ATF for domestic markets was expected to increase by more than 100% on April 1,” the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said.“In order to insulate the domestic travel costs from the substantial increase in international prices, PSU Oil Marketing Companies of the Ministry of Petroleum, in consultation with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, have passed only a partial and staggered increase of 25% (only Rs 15 per litre) to the airlines. Foreign routes will pay for the full increase in ATF prices consistent with what they pay in other parts of the world.Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu said, “This calibrated approach will help shield passengers from sharp fare increases, ease the burden on domestic airlines, and support the continued stability of the aviation sector at this crucial juncture. It will also benefit the broader economy by ensuring the smooth movement of cargo and maintaining vital air connectivity for trade and logistics.”

Hospitality

Higher commercial LPG prices have added to the challenges faced by hotels and restaurants, where operating costs have already risen by around 20% amid the West Asia conflict. With business volumes declining and expenses climbing, establishments are now considering increasing menu prices to offset the growing financial pressure.“The latest hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices has added yet another layer of pressure on already squeezed margins. Given this scenario, hospitality establishments may now be left with little choice but to consider an upward revision in menu prices to partially absorb the escalating cost burden,” said HRAWI spokesperson Pradeep Shetty.Meanwhile, the government has repeatedly assured thad the country has adequate energy supplies. Earlier this week, the Centre stated that there was no shortage of LPG in the country, and that it was prioritising Piped Natural Gas, adding that it had adequate diesel and petrol supply.

Sunetra Pawar dials Shiv Sena (UBT) for Baramati bypoll backing | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar has dialled Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray to seek his support for winning the Baramati assembly byelection unopposed, reports Chaitanya Marpakwar.Congress staked its claim to the Pawar family’s traditional Baramati seat, with the party’s state chief, Harshwardhan Sapkal, holding online interviews with aspirants for the seat over the past few days. The Baramati bypoll has once again exposed cracks in the Maha Vikas Aghadi as Congress announced its intent to fight the bypoll, while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) said it won’t field any candidate against Sunetra. The Sena (UBT)’s stand is set to be crucial if the elections are to happen unopposed.Deputy CM and NCP chief Sunetra Pawar has approached the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his party’s support in the upcoming Baramati by-poll. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Sunetra’s husband Ajit Pawar, who was the deputy chief minister at the time, in a plane crash on Jan 28.“DCM Sunetra Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray spoke over the phone yesterday. They discussed the Baramati byelection. This contest has drawn everyone’s attention. What happened in that discussion and what the party decides will soon be communicated by the party chief himself,” said Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut. “Ajit Pawar was a trusted and close associate of Uddhav Thackeray. So I think Uddhav Thackeray will talk to us (regarding the unopposed byelection). Sunetra Pawar’s party is not in the Maha Vikas Aghadi. It is with the BJP. If Congress makes a different decision, we should examine it as MVA. But Uddhav and Ajit Pawar had an emotional bond…,” Raut said.Raut said he does not know if Sunetra Pawar discussed the issue of an unopposed election with the Congress. “But the BJP has fielded candidates in many byelections. Ajit Pawar had fielded Nana Kate against Ashwini Jagtap in Pune too,” Raut said.Sapkal said, “We have received six applications for Baramati and four for the Rahuri seat so far. If NCP (SP) is not contesting these seats, our party will, and we are firm about it.”Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said all parties must support Sunetra Pawar’s candidature. He said that when NCP’s RR Patil passed away, the BJP had decided not to contest the 2015 by-poll, facilitating an unopposed election.“I think all parties should support Sunetra Pawar. If this by-election is held unopposed, Maharashtra will be in a favourable position. Maharashtra has held unopposed by-elections many times before. All parties should be brave and hold this election unopposed,” Fadnavis said.Meanwhile Congress’s decision to contest both the Baramati and Rahuri bypolls has prompted senior members of Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) to huddle for internal discussions to finalise a candidate for the Rahuri seat. In Baramati, Jay Pawar, the younger son of late Ajit Pawar, has stepped up to steer the campaign for his mother, Sunetra Pawar. Responding to Congress’s decision, Jay said party seniors would hold talks with the Congress leadership, but said even if Congress chooses to proceed, NCP would not object.Sunetra will file her nomination for the Baramati bypoll on Monday, the final day for submitting nominations. Ashok Sharma’s 154.2 kmph rocket not the fastest: Here are IPL’s quickest-ever deliveries
Ashok Sharma bowls fastest bowl of IPL 2026 vs Rajasthan Royals

Gujarat Titans unearthed a moment of raw pace brilliance in IPL 2026 as Ashok Sharma sent down the quickest delivery of the season so far during their clash against the Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The young pacer consistently hurried the Royals batters, but it was the final ball of the 16th over that truly stood out. Charging in with intent, Sharma unleashed a searing yorker at 154.2 kmph to Dhruv Jurel, marking the fastest delivery recorded in the ongoing season. The effort not only highlighted his potential but also placed him among the quickest bowlers to feature in the league this year. The Indian Premier League has long been a stage for extreme pace, with several fast bowlers pushing the limits of speed. Despite Sharma’s effort, the all-time record still belongs to Shaun Tait, whose thunderous 157.71 kmph delivery in 2011 remains unmatched. Representing the Rajasthan Royals, Tait produced that fiery spell against the then Delhi Daredevils in Jaipur. Bowling with hostility, he had already dismissed Virender Sehwag before testing Aaron Finch with sheer pace. The record delivery beat Finch all ends up, narrowly flying over the stumps. Over the years, a few have come close. Lockie Ferguson clocked 157.3 kmph during the IPL 2022 final while playing for Gujarat Titans, falling just short of Tait’s mark. Meanwhile, Umran Malik set the benchmark for Indian pacers with a 157 kmph rocket for Sunrisers Hyderabad the same season, later earning an India call-up after a 22-wicket campaign. He also went on to record a 155 kmph delivery in international cricket against Sri Lanka in 2023. More recently, Mayank Yadav made headlines in IPL 2024 by hitting 156.7 kmph for Lucknow Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, registering one of the fastest deliveries by an Indian in the tournament.

Fastest deliveries in IPL history

Bowler Team Speed (kmph) Opponent Season
Shaun Tait Rajasthan Royals 157.71 Delhi Daredevils 2011
Lockie Ferguson Gujarat Titans 157.30 Rajasthan Royals 2022
Umran Malik Sunrisers Hyderabad 157.00 Delhi Capitals 2022
Mayank Yadav Lucknow Super Giants 156.70 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 2024
Anrich Nortje Delhi Capitals 156.22 Rajasthan Royals 2020

Even as new names continue to emerge, Tait’s iconic Jaipur thunderbolt remains the benchmark for extreme pace in the IPL, with every new generation of fast bowlers chasing that elusive record.
