‘True Friendship’: Iran Envoy Lauds India Ties, Clarifies Deleted Thank You Posts

Q: Many Indians sent aid to Iran. Tehran thanked India but then deleted some of the tweets. What happened?A: We have received a lot of contributions from all over India—from north to south and east to west. Donations are still coming in. We are truly grateful for the kindness of the Indian people. I want to sincerely thank the Indian govt and people for their valuable support and solidarity. Contrary to what was said in the media, there was no special reason for deleting the tweets. Since these contributions came from people of all religions, ethnicities, and every part of the country, we felt it was necessary to show our appreciation to all the people of India together.Q: The war has also been a battle of narratives. Has the global perception shifted in anyone’s favour?A: Beyond all the rhetoric and contradictory statements, what happened on Feb 28th was an act of aggression and an illegal war imposed on the Iranian nation. We were in the middle of negotiations with the US. This wasn’t the first time the United States walked away from the table while we were negotiating and attacked. For what reason? They claimed there was an ‘immediate threat’ from Iran, but then the Pentagon quickly denied it, saying there was no such threat. They talked about Iran’s nuclear program and nuclear weapons—something that has never existed. Now, everyone knows this is a war based on illusions. It is an illegal war imposed not only on Iran but also on the entire region, with consequences for the whole international community. Our enemies have not achieved any of their goals so far. They were looking for ‘regime change’ in Iran. However, we are a govt that emerged from a popular revolution, and our people have shown their support by taking to the streets since the very first day of the war. We are defending ourselves, and we will spare no effort in this path.Q: The administration in Iran recently praised India for its ‘balanced’ and ‘neutral’ stance. Is there anything Iran expects from New Delhi? A: We appreciate the measures taken by the Indian govt. This approach reflects India’s profound understanding of regional complexities and the significance of maintaining bilateral relations. At the same time, we expect all independent and freedom-loving nations to stand against the violation of international law and aggression. All govts must condemn attacks on civilian infrastructures—such as hospitals, schools, universities, and economic centers—and, most importantly, the killing of innocent civilians, including children.Q: There were inputs of Iran helping Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during heightened tensions. Could you clarify if any specific mechanisms or coordination channels are currently in place to ensure their safe passage? A: Iran has always emphasized the importance of safety and security for shipping in international routes. However, it is important to note that the Strait of Hormuz is not part of international waters; it is within the territorial and internal waters of Iran and Oman. Therefore, protecting the interests of these two countries is the priority in managing the strait, and decisions regarding transit conditions belong to Tehran and Muscat. The strait is only closed to countries at war with Iran. It is natural that during wartime, we will not allow our enemies to pass through our internal waters. The fact that other ships are not traveling is due to the insecurity in the region and extremely high insurance costs. Nevertheless, we have implemented special measures to ensure the safe passage of ships from friendly nations, including India.Q: Is this assistance to Indian vessels being handled on a case-by-case operational basis? What’s the approach?A: Our approach is to guarantee the safe passage of vessels from friendly nations, including India. This policy is based on recognized international maritime laws and regulations, as well as the principles of navigation safety. In practice, this can be managed on a case-by-case and operational basis to ensure necessary coordination according to each vessel’s specific conditions and the real-time situation in the region. We have emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is closed only to those countries that have been directly or indirectly involved in the aggression against our country.Q: What message would Iran like to convey to the international shipping community on transit through the Strait of Hormuz going forward?A: The Islamic Republic of Iran has always respected the principles of freedom of navigation and maritime safety; however, the effective realization of these principles in the Strait of Hormuz is not possible without due respect for the sovereignty and sovereign rights of Iran as the coastal state. We emphasize that responsibility for any disruption, insecurity, or heightened risk in this vital waterway and its surrounding areas lies directly with the regimes of the United States and Israel. By initiating an unlawful and criminal war against our country, they have placed regional stability and the safety of international shipping under an unprecedented threat, in clear contradiction to the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter. In light of the above, the lawful and legitimate measures undertaken by Iran have been adopted within the framework of established principles of international law, based on the principles of necessity and proportionality. These measures have been implemented to repel aggression and neutralize the sources of threats, and will continue, in accordance with legal standards, until these objectives are fully achieved and the sources of threat and aggression are eliminated.Any passage through the Strait of Hormuz must be conducted in compliance with the measures adopted by Iran and in coordination with the relevant Iranian authorities.Q: How has your stint as ambassador in India been? What are your biggest takeaways?A: During my time in India, I have seen positive developments in the relations between our two countries. The deep historical and cultural ties have always been a strength in our interactions, and these bonds have grown even stronger over time. The sympathy and solidarity of the Indian people with the people of Iran during these difficult times are truly appreciated and will never be forgotten. We believe that true friends are known in hard times, and our Indian friends have shown their true friendship. We are in close contact with the Indian govt, and during my stay, I have witnessed positive efforts from both sides in various fields.

The crisis within the Bangladesh Cricket Board has deepened, with multiple resignations from its board even before completing six months in office, raising questions over its stability.Seven out of 25 directors have already stepped down, including four who resigned after Saturday’s board meeting. The exits have increased uncertainty around the future of the current administration.

Despite the situation, BCB president Aminul Islam said on Sunday that he will not step down. His remarks came as an investigation into alleged malpractice and abuse of power in last year’s election has submitted its report to the Bangladesh government. The board is facing pressure from the sports ministry, which has questioned the validity of the election, Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and allegations of political interference and favouritism within the BCB.The four directors who resigned on April 4 are Saniyan Taneem, Mehrab Alam, Faiazur Rahman and Manjurul Alam.“I will sit in my chair, what else can I do? I will be the last person to go,” Aminul told Jamuna TV on Saturday as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. “I have a very good, dedicated and honest team [in the BCB]. I want to serve Bangladesh cricket with this team.”“Nobody is indispensable. I was the only [Bangladeshi] to work in the ICC. I am not saying I am something huge, but I am sitting here because of my experience. I left everything to be here to support my country. If this is no longer mine, I will look at another path. But I want to support my country.”“Our team (board of directors) are good and they are dedicated and honest so I want to work with this team and serve Bangladesh cricket,” he said. “We could not work with freedom for one day as an external force was always disturbing us and still doing that. Our cricket is stagnant and I have said a lot of times that an external force is disturbing us and because of that the pace of our cricket has slowed down.”Aminul said he could not appear before the investigation committee due to a clash in schedules and instead submitted a written response.

Is Aminul Islam assertion of a dedicated and honest team convincing to you?

“I did not face the committee. I was busy in two separate meetings, so the dates clashed with their schedule for me. I gave them my reply in writing,” he said. “I was not involved with anything [in the board elections]. I was involved in one area, which is now under investigation. I will not go into the details, but I can just say that the ad-hoc committee runs the district sports organisation, according to our constitution. It is clearly stated that the names [of councillors] should come from within the ad-hoc committee.”“When only three names came from within those ad-hoc committees, we were forced to write to them again. We said that please send the names from within your ad-hoc committee. This is the only thing I was involved in,” he added.Aminul was appointed BCB president in May 2025 after replacing Faruque Ahmed as the government-endorsed director on the board. He later contested the elections in October and was elected president.Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal had alleged malpractice and abuse of power against Aminul and withdrew from the election race.

Gold imports jump to $69 billion in Apr-Feb FY26; trade deficit widens

Gold imports jump to $69 billion in Apr-Feb FY26; trade deficit widens

India’s gold imports rose 28.73% to $69 billion during April-February 2025-26, driven by elevated prices of the precious metal, according to Commerce Ministry data cited by PTI.Gold imports had stood at $53.52 billion in the corresponding period of 2024-25.The sharp rise in imports contributed to a widening trade deficit, which increased to $310.60 billion in the 11-month period of the last fiscal from $261.80 billion a year earlier.Prices of gold are currently hovering around Rs 1,51,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) in the national capital.Switzerland remained the largest source of gold imports with around 40% share, followed by the UAE (over 16%) and South Africa (about 10%).Gold accounts for more than 5% of India’s total imports. Imports from Switzerland rose 11.57% to $23.5 billion during April-February 2025-26, while in February alone, imports from the country surged 719.30% year-on-year to $2.71 billion.India is the world’s second-largest gold consumer after China, with imports largely catering to demand from the jewellery sector. These inflows also have implications for the country’s current account deficit (CAD).According to RBI data, CAD rose to $13.2 billion, or 1.3% of GDP, in the December quarter from $11.3 billion (1.1% of GDP) a year ago, mainly due to a higher trade deficit. However, for April-December 2025, CAD moderated to $30.1 billion (1% of GDP) compared to $36.6 billion (1.3% of GDP) in the same period of the previous year.Silver imports during April-February jumped 142.87% to $11.43 billion. Silver is widely used in industries such as electronics, automobiles and pharmaceuticals. To curb imports, the government last week imposed restrictions on all forms of gold, silver and platinum articles.

AIFF delays elections by three months, FIFA says it has no objection | Goa News

FIFA, the governing body for world football, has told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) it has “no objection” to elections being postponed from September to December 2026

Panaji: FIFA, the governing body for world football, has told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) it has “no objection” to elections being postponed from September to December 2026, to ensure full compliance of the constitution with the new National Sports Governance Act 2025 and its related regulations.AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey was elected on Sept 2 in 2022 for a four-year term. Elections were to be held before the end of the term, but with the National Sports Governance Act 2025 coming into force, AIFF informed the governing bodies that it needs to stay in office till later this year “to ensure uninterrupted administration of football in India.”“On Dec 22, 2025, the ministry of youth affairs and sports issued a notice recognising that the structural changes required for all national sports federations to fully align with the NSGA are foundational in nature. In order to facilitate compliance with the provisions of the NSGA, the ministry of youth affairs and sports allowed a one-time extension to national sports federations whose elections are due in this calendar year, allowing such federations to conduct their next elections by Dec 31,” AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan wrote in a letter to FIFA and AFC last month.FIFA said it has no objection and reiterated its willingness to support AIFF throughout this process and to work closely together.“We kindly ask that you keep FIFA and the AFC informed of any further steps in the amendment process of the AIFF constitution, and in particular to share with us a document outlining the key amendments and necessary steps required with tentative timelines to ensure compliance with the NSGA,” Emile Doms, Member Associations Governance Services Manager at FIFA, wrote to the federation last week.Meanwhile AIFF has asked its member associations to complete adoption of amendments to their constitutional document on or before June 30, 2026.AIFF said governance principles and constitutional positions that are reflected in the constitutions of state associations should extend to its affiliated units such as district associations, where applicable, to ensure consistency of governance standards across all levels of football administration in India.

Mohammed Shami’s sensational opening spell laid the foundation for Lucknow Super Giants’ thrilling five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL clash on Sunday, as Rishabh Pant’s composed finish sealed the chase in the final over.Sunrisers Hyderabad endured a nightmare start after being put in to bat, collapsing to 35/4 inside the first 10 overs. Mohammed Shami was the chief destroyer, returning exceptional figures of 4-0-9-2, including 18 dot balls that choked the scoring. The veteran pacer removed the dangerous opening pair of Abhishek Sharma (0) and Travis Head (7) with clever variations, while Prince Yadav cleaned up Ishan Kishan (1) with a sharp in-swinger. Liam Livingstone’s struggle at the crease only compounded SRH’s woes as they slipped to 26/4 early on.

Mukul Choudhary on LSG’s game plan: backing partnerships & staying fearless

Klaasen, Reddy Script Stunning Recovery

With the innings in disarray, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy engineered a remarkable turnaround. The duo stitched together a crucial 116-run partnership for the fifth wicket, shifting the momentum dramatically. After a cautious phase, the pair switched gears, launching a counterattack that saw SRH plunder 79 runs between overs 11 and 15. Klaasen (62 off 41) and Reddy (56 off 33) peppered the boundary ropes with seven sixes and eight fours, lifting SRH to a competitive position. At one stage, a total in excess of 180 looked possible.LSG Pull Things Back at the DeathHowever, Lucknow Super Giants staged a strong comeback in the death overs. Manimaran Siddharth broke the dangerous stand by dismissing Reddy, while Avesh Khan struck twice in quick succession to remove Klaasen and Harsh Dubey. Prince Yadav then bowled a tight final over, conceding just 10 runs, as SRH were restricted to 156/9, a total that appeared slightly below par given their mid-innings surge.

Pant Anchors Chase in Final-Over Thriller

In reply, Lucknow Super Giants got off to a positive start, with Aiden Markram leading the early charge. The South African looked fluent in the powerplay, playing a range of crisp strokes as he raced to 45 before being dismissed by young spinner Shivang Kumar.Rishabh Pant then took charge of the chase, anchoring the innings with smart strike rotation and composure. Though not at his most fluent, the skipper ensured the scoreboard kept moving and held the innings together. Hyderabad found a way back into the contest when Shivang removed Markram, and a sharp run-out of Nicholas Pooran further tilted momentum in their favour. Harsh Dubey added to the pressure by dismissing Ayush Badoni, tightening the screws on Lucknow.Just when the chase began to wobble, Abdul Samad provided a timely boost with a quick cameo, striking a couple of crucial boundaries to ease the tension. However, SRH continued to fight, with Dubey striking again to remove Samad in the 18th over. A brilliant penultimate over from Harshal Patel, conceding just four runs, left Lucknow needing nine off the final over.Pant then stepped up under pressure. Two boundaries off the first two deliveries swung the equation dramatically before the captain calmly finished the game with another four, remaining unbeaten on a gritty half-century to guide Lucknow to a thrilling victory. Also See: RCB vs CSK Live Score

Mumbai: Manisha Pawar (47) could not serve Mumbaikars as a corporator after losing as an independent candidate from Ward 197 in BMC elections earlier this year. But she has served the city in her death by donating her heart, liver and bones on Thursday. The Worli resident’s heart was transported on Friday from SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim to Fortis Hospital in Mulund through a green corridor in 23 minutes. The recipient was a 39-year-old man from Buldhana whose heart had severely reduced pumping. This was the sixth heart transplant of the city; the fifth happened just days earlier, when a similar green corridor was created for the heart to be transported from Thane to Girgaon. A green corridor is a demarcated, cleared-out route designed for the transport of donated organs to reach the destination hospital without halts. A pilot vehicle is assigned by the police to lead the ambulance from the point of origin to the destination.Traffic chowkies along the route are alerted, and personnel are posted to clear vehicles just before the ambulance arrives. The control room monitors the route through surveillance footage in real time. Manisha’s liver was transplanted into a 62-year-old man who was battling hepatic carcinoma with end-stage liver failure. Her husband, ‘Pappu’ Prakash Pawar, said Manisha expressed the desire to donate organs out of the blue a few months ago. “The hospital further counselled us,” he said.Pawar said both he and his wife wanted to serve the people through politics. “I was a gangster in the Arun Gawli gang earlier, and the first person to fight BMC elections from jail around 2008 on an MNS ticket. Manisha fought elections twice as an independent.” The couple has two children, both in their 20s.

Ashok Kharat CDR leak: ‘Eknath Shinde being targeted’ feeling getting traction among people, says Maharashtra minister Uday Samant | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Maharashtra minister Uday Samant on Sunday responded to the CDR leak issue in the Ashok Kharat case by claiming a feeling was getting traction among people that political hurdles were being created for “a person from a common household”, a reference to deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde.Activist Anjali Damania on Friday alleged that at least 17 calls were exchanged between Shinde and Kharat during an unspecified period in the past. Damania claimed she received Kharat’s CDR (Call Detail Records) on WhatsApp from an unknown number.“It is wrong to create such political hurdles for a person from a common household. This feeling will get traction in the minds of people,” Samant said in response to a question related to the alleged calls between Shinde and Kharat.Samant, who met NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar here, said even his party could have a feeling that its leaders are being targeted.Samant asserted that such allegations will not impact Shinde’s work or leadership. “People’s affection for Shinde will only increase,” he said, while emphasising that the Shiv Sena’s stand is that the entire episode involving the CDR should be probed thoroughly instead of taking names of specific persons.Shinde is the third number leader of NDA and is seen as the voice of the common man, he added.Kharat was arrested on March 18 for allegedly raping a woman for three years, with a subsequent probe uncovering a host of crimes, including sexual assault and financial irregularities linked to land and other properties.

Gold, silver rate outlook: Prices seen range-bound; Middle East tensions, US data in focus

Gold, silver rate outlook: Prices seen range-bound; Middle East tensions, US data in focus

Gold and silver are likely to trade in a range with a positive bias in the coming week as investors track geopolitical developments in West Asia and key global macroeconomic data, analysts said, according to PTI.Market participants will also watch the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision due mid-week for further cues.“Going into the week ahead, focus continues to remain on developments in the Gulf region – any sign of further escalation and de-escalation may drive prices, accordingly,” said Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG – Commodity & Currency Research, JM Financial Services Ltd.He added that investors will closely track global indicators including services PMI readings across major economies, along with US data on durable goods, GDP, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index and CPI inflation. In the previous holiday-shortened week, gold futures for June delivery rose Rs 2,425, or 1.65%, while silver futures for May gained Rs 4,541, or 2% on the Multi Commodity Exchange.Brokerage firm Choice Broking said the recovery in gold and silver prices followed three consecutive weeks of decline, supported by macroeconomic and geopolitical factors, including a weakening rupee at record lows and a decline in Bitcoin as investors shifted flows towards bullion. In global markets, gold futures for June delivery rose USD 155.4, or 3.43%, to settle at USD 4,679.7 per ounce on Comex. Silver for May delivery increased USD 3.13, or 4.5%, to close at USD 72.92 per ounce.“Gold prices closed in positive for the second straight week, ending with a weekly gain of nearly 4 per cent, while silver too was up for the week, tracking higher gold and industrial metals,” Mer said.He noted that prices held firm despite stronger-than-expected US macroeconomic data, which reinforced expectations that the economy remains resilient and that monetary policy continues to be accommodative.Mer added that some liquidation was seen in gold due to ETF selling and reduced central bank buying, followed by a corrective move after US President Donald Trump’s remarks on Iran heightened geopolitical tensions.Choice Broking said uncertainties persist as Iran rejected a US peace proposal and maintained control over the Strait of Hormuz, while strong physical demand continued to support prices. Silver imports into China during the first two months of 2026 reached an eight-year high of 206.76 metric tonnes, tightening global supply.Analysts expect the overall trend in precious metals to remain sideways to bullish in the near term, with investors also monitoring US unemployment data and jobless claims for signals on policy direction and bullion prices.
