IPL 2026: Sameer Rizvi's masterclass floors Mumbai Indians; Delhi Capitals make it two in a row

NEW DELHI: At the halfway mark, Rohit Sharma said the pitch was difficult to bat on and backed Mumbai Indians‘ bowlers to defend 162 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. His words almost proved to be prophetic.Chasing 163, Delhi Capitals needed 90 runs in the last ten overs with well-set Pathum Nissanka back in the hut. But Sameer Rizvi, Delhi’s hero in their last match against Lucknow Super Giants, took them home again with another sublime knock. Delhi Capitals defeated Mumbai Indians by five wickets to register their second consecutive win in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rizvi struggled initially and was 11 off 17 balls at one stage. The 22-year-old broke free with a six off Corbin Bosch in the ninth over. However, the match remained in the balance as Mitchell Santner dismissed Pathum Nissanka. The Sri Lanka opener, who scored a fluent 44 off 30 balls, top-edged one, with Mayank Markande taking a good catch at short fine leg.Rizvi then shifted gears in the next over, taking 20 runs off Corbin Bosch. He handled every variation with ease, dispatching slower balls, short deliveries and fuller ones alike, even managing a maximum off a mistimed shot.He smashed back-to-back sixes off Mayank Markande to complete his second consecutive fifty this season and his third in a row for the franchise, reaching the milestone in 32 balls.Jasprit Bumrah briefly pulled things back with a one-run over, but Delhi were firmly in control by then. Rizvi continued his assault on Deepak Chahar and later combined with David Miller for a 50-run stand in just 26 balls, with Miller contributing only one run.Rizvi looked unstoppable, taking apart Shardul Thakur for 17 runs in an over. Miller then joined in with a couple of elegant boundaries off Bumrah.Rizvi eventually departed after a brilliant 90 off 51 balls, receiving a standing ovation from the Delhi crowd, his teammates and even the opposition. And by then time, he got out it was a mere formality.

A dry afternoon

On the eve of the match, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene and Delhi Capitals spinner Kuldeep Yadav had expressed similar views that the Arun Jaitley Stadium pitch would be batting-friendly. However, it turned out to be a two-paced surface.Mumbai Indians were without their regular captain Hardik Pandya, who missed the match due to a viral infection. Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel won the toss and opted to chase. After being put in to bat, Mumbai Indians got off to a shaky start, with Mukesh Kumar removing Ryan Rickelton (9) and Tilak Varma (0) in the third over. Mukesh initially searched for swing but adjusted his length in his next over to pick up both wickets.

Rohit Sharma then joined stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, and the pair steadied the innings. Mumbai Indians were 41 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. The duo rotated strike well and added 53 runs for the third wicket before Rohit fell for 35 in the 10th over, dismissed by Axar Patel.

Sherfane Rutherford had a brief stay, scoring five before getting caught in the deep.Next in, Naman Dhir scored a fine 28 before falling in the penultimate over. Mitchell Santner and Corbin Bosch struck a few boundaries towards the end, helping Mumbai Indians post 162 for 6.

West Bengal polls: EC suspends 4 police officers after TMC workers gatecrash Amit Shah’s Bhabanipur roadshow

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Saturday directed West Bengal chief secretary to suspend four Kolkata Police officials for “failing” to maintain law and order during BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s nomination filing in Bhabanipur constituency for the upcoming assembly polls. In a circular to the West Bengal chief secretary, the poll panel said that the direction is based on a recommendation from state electoral officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal.“The commission has agreed to the proposal and directs that the aforementioned police officers be suspended and disciplinary proceedings be initiated against them immediately,” the circular read. The missive also directed action against Kolkata Police’s Deputy Commissioner (DC-II), South Division, Siddhartha Dutta; Officer-in-Charge of Alipore Police Station Priyankar Chakraborty; Additional OC Chandi Charan Banerjee; and Sergeant Saurabh Chatterjee.Additionally, the EC also asked the state authorities to ensure that its directions are implemented without delay and that a compliance report be submitted by 11 am on Monday. The poll panel also sought an urgent proposal from the state government to fill up the vacant posts, including that of DC-II, South Division, and the officer-in-charge positions at Alipore Police Station. This comes after TMC workers waved party flags during BJP’s roadshow before Adhikari’s nomination filing on Thursday. Union minister Amit Shah had also accompanied Adhikari for the filing of the nomination papers on April 2 in the seat in south Kolkata, where the leader of the opposition in the outgoing Assembly is pitted against incumbent chief minister Mamata Banerjee. As the convoy approached Kalighat, barely a few hundred metres from Banerjee’s residence, Trinamool Congress workers and supporters gathered on the roadside waving green-and-white party flags, shouting ‘Joy Bangla’ and ‘Mamata Banerjee Zindabad’ slogans. However, the situation turned tense when the BJP roadshow and the TMC protest came face to face near Kalighat. For several minutes, supporters of the two rival camps stood barely a few metres apart, hurling slogans at each other.A thick cordon of police personnel formed a human wall between the two groups to prevent any clash, with officers pushing the rival supporters back on either side of the road.

Iran claims second US F-35 downed in two weeks, says pilot survival ‘unlikely’

Iran on Friday claimed that a second US F-35 fighter jet had been shot down over central Iran, according to a Reuters report citing Iran’s Mehr news agency. The report added that the pilot’s survival was unlikely. There has been no immediate confirmation from US authorities. The claim comes two weeks after a US F-35 stealth fighter was hit during a combat mission over Iran, forcing an emergency landing at a US air base in the Middle East. At the time, American officials said the pilot had survived and was in stable condition. Iran had earlier said it struck the aircraft using its air defence systems, potentially marking the first time it had hit one of the United States’ most advanced jets during the ongoing conflict.

This enables it to operate deep inside heavily defended areas, making it difficult for enemy air defences to track or target.

All power plants, energy infrastructure, and information and communication technology of the Zionist regime, and all similar companies in the region that have American shareholders, shall face complete and utter annihilation,” Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya HQ spokesman warned in a video message. The video also displayed the text: “Nothing is hidden from our sight, though hidden by Google.” It then pointed to the location of Stargate in the UAE, described as an AI computing cluster, and showed a photo of American CEOs of the project’s major partner firms, including Nvidia, OpenAI, Microsoft and Goldman Sachs.A report by the Financial Times said Thursday that Amazon’s cloud operations in Bahrain were damaged following an Iranian strike. According to it, Bahrain’s interior ministry said civil defence teams were “extinguishing a fire in a facility of a company as a result of the Iranian aggression.”The development follows earlier threats by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which had warned of targeting US companies operating in the Middle East, including Microsoft, Apple, Google and Meta. We have to take good responsibility and have a good game here. (On the surface) Looks good, The toss was irrelevant. We wanted to bat first, they wanted to bowl first, but yeah, very happy to bat first. Looks good one. We’ve done here really well when we’ve batted first and defended. Quite a few changes. Deepak Chahar comes in for Hardik. Corbin Bosch comes in for Boulty, that’s a tactical change. Boulty had a good game in the last game at Wankhede. And Mitch Santner comes in for Allah Ghazanfar,” Surya said.Axar went with the same side against Mumbai Indians. “I choose to bowl first. First match at home, I want to see how the wicket is behaving. It looks a bit dry, a bit hard. We chased well in the last match. Tamil Nadu election 2026: The big Annamalai question — what BJP gains, what it risks | India News

BJP Drops Annamalai From TN Candidate List, Signals Alliance-First Strategy?

NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader K Annamalai on Saturday clarified that he was not denied a ticket for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, stating that he himself had chosen not to contest and would instead focus on campaigning for the party and its allies.“I had already informed the core committee in writing that I would not be contesting in any constituency. Therefore, it is not that I was denied a ticket the truth is that I chose not to contest the election,” Annamalai told reporters at Chennai airport.

BJP Drops Annamalai From TN Candidate List, Signals Alliance-First Strategy?

The clarification comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of 27 candidates for the April 23 assembly polls, with Annamalai’s absence drawing attention across political circles.

.

Annamalai said he would take on a broader organisational role during the elections while campaigning for BJP across multiple states.“… In this election, my role is to campaign for candidates across Tamil Nadu. Right now, the party has given me the responsibility to campaign in Puducherry and Kerala till the 7th (April). From the 7th to the 23rd, I have to campaign for all BJP and NDA candidates across Tamil Nadu. That is the responsibility given by the party to me. I’ll be fulfilling that responsibility,” he said.He also expressed gratitude to the party leadership for accepting his decision.“When I did not express any interest in contesting, how could the leadership allocate me a ticket? If I had decided to contest, it wouldn’t have mattered which constituency I could have contested from anywhere. I am grateful to the BJP leadership for respecting my decision and giving me the opportunity to campaign in support of the NDA alliance candidates,” he added. However, there were reports that Annamalai had conveyed to the party national leadership his “extreme” displeasure over the constituencies allocated for the national party by the AIADMK.Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran termed Annamalai’s absence from candidate list a leadership call.“This is a decision from the high command…,” Nagendran said, expressing confidence in the party’s candidates. “All the 27 candidates will surely win this time.”Despite not contesting, Annamalai remains central to the BJP’s campaign strategy. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said his popularity would benefit the party across the state.“Annamalai is the most popular leader of the BJP, not just in Tamil Nadu, but he commands a large following all over the country. He has been given the responsibility of campaigning for all the candidates in Tamil Nadu. I am extremely confident that Annamalai’s popularity and his campaign all across Tamil Nadu will translate into victory for the BJP candidates all across the state,” Surya said. The BJP’s candidate list includes senior leaders such as Tamilisai Soundararajan from Mylapore, Vanathi Srinivasan from Coimbatore North, and Union minister L Murugan from Avinashi.Annamalai, a former IPS officer known as “Singham”, had earlier served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president before being replaced by Nagendran. He played a key role in expanding the party’s presence in the state and led outreach initiatives such as the “En Mann, En Makkal” yatra. The BJP is contesting the elections as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led in the state by the AIADMK. Under the alliance arrangement, the AIADMK will contest 169 of the 234 seats, while the BJP will contest 27 seats alongside other allies.Tamil Nadu will go to polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. The main contest is expected between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the NDA, with actor-turned-politician Vijay also entering the fray. Why the move may work for BJPAnnamalai is freed from constituency-level responsibilities, allowing him to campaign extensively across multiple regions. His role as a star campaigner strengthens BJP’s outreach across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. This also helps BJP to push for a stable alliance with AIADMK. His absence reduces friction with Edappadi K Palaniswami, aiding smoother alliance coordination.Annamalai was known for his ruthless criticism of AIADMK and DMK. Subsequently, EPS had made Annamalai’s ouster from state politics a precondition for alliance talks ahead of the polls. The leadership transition to Nainar Nagendran signalled a more alliance-friendly and structured approach. It allowed the party to project a unified command and avoid internal contradictions during elections. What might go against BJPAnnamalai’s absence from the ballot could demoralise grassroots workers who viewed him as a key leader. BJP risks weakening its independent “third force” narrative in Tamil Nadu politics. His aggressive campaign style, which attracted younger voters, may not fully translate without him contesting. The move may create confusion among voters regarding the party’s leadership direction in the state. It could be perceived as BJP conceding space to AIADMK within the alliance structure. Lack of a strong face as a candidate may also impact local-level electoral momentum.
