Lieutenant governor orders magisterial probe into Ganderbal ‘encounter’, seeks report within seven days

SRINAGAR: The lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, on Friday ordered a magisterial inquiry into a recent encounter in Ganderbal district and sought a report within seven days. The Army had claimed on April 1 that an unidentified terrorist was killed in the operation at Arhama the previous night, while the slain person’s family denied any terror links and demanded a probe.“I have ordered a thorough and impartial magisterial inquiry into the Arhama, Ganderbal incident. The inquiry will examine all aspects related to the incident and ensure that justice is served,” Sinha wrote on X.The order, marked “confidential” and “urgent”, was issued by the home department, which functions under the LG. In the order, the Ganderbal district magistrate has been directed to ascertain the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Rashid Ahmad Mughal, 28, by getting “a thorough and impartial magisterial inquiry conducted”. The inquiry may be completed within seven days, and the report may be submitted to the home department, the order states.Rashid’s elder brother, Ajaz Ahmad Mughal, on Thursday, alleged that he was killed in a “fake encounter”, and filed a complaint with the police seeking an FIR and investigation.J&K Police have not made any statement regarding the matter so far. After Ajaz disputed the Army’s statement related to the encounter, chief minister Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also sought an inquiry. “I believe the family’s claim should not be dismissed out of hand. At the very least, this encounter needs a transparent & time bound probe with the facts made public. Any attempt to obfuscate or delay the announcement of a probe will only damage credibility & that is not in anyone’s interest,” Omar, who is the MLA from Ganderbal constituency, wrote on X.

Panvel civic body withdraws plan to lease land to educational trust, plans school instead | Mumbai News

Navi Mumbai: The Panvel civic body withdrew its proposal to hand over a 5,000 sqm plot (over an acre) worth around Rs 200 crore to an educational trust run by a political family for 30 years. Opposition party members strongly opposed the proposal in the general body meeting and questioned why such a prime plot reserved for a civic school, along with a playground, should be given to a private educational trust at a throwaway price, with a lease rent of Rs 56,604 per month, while the PCMC still struggled to get hold of land plots for public use from Cidco. The plot, located near Vadale talao, will now be developed by the PCMC as a school, and it will be named after ex-MP Ram Thakur, father of the current BJP MLA Prashant Thakur. Ram Thakur’s younger son, sitting corporator Paresh Thakur, offered to donate Rs 10 crore towards the school’s development. The plot had a nearly 22-year-old history, and it was earlier proposed to be given to Janardan Bhagat Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha, Panvel, whose founder chairman was the same ex-MP, Ram Thakur. In Nov 2004, the Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) proposed handing over this prime land to the Janardhan Bhagat Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha, but the state urban development department did not approve it at that time. With the formation of PCMC, the proposal was moved in the general body meeting to give away this land to the educational trust at a low cost for 30 years, and it was therefore opposed. PWP, Sena-UBT and Congress netas Arvind Mhatre, Leena Garad and Haresh Keni opposed the proposal during the general body meeting debate. Demanding cancellation of the proposal, Keni said, “The plot is now worth Rs 150 cr – Rs 200 cr. Can’t the PCMC with a Rs 4,853 cr budget construct a school, and what is the need for handing over the plot? Will the sanstha (trust) provide free of cost education to the poor?” Mayor Nitin Patil directed the administration to present a fresh proposal in the next general body meeting. Opposition leaders accepted the suggestion to name the school after the ex-MP.

Contributions from the middle order ensured the chase stayed on track, and they eventually reached 210/5 in 18.4 overs. While CSK impressed with the bat, their bowlers struggled to contain runs. BEST orders urgent inspection of ‘defective’ buses in Mumbai | Mumbai News

Mumbai: BEST panel members on Friday flagged what they described as a grave and immediate threat to commuter safety arising from “defective buses” in the fleet, including wet lease contract buses operating on Mumbai roads. BEST general manager Sonia Sethi has now directed that an intensified inspection drive be undertaken on a war footing to identify any such buses, and a detailed report be put up by a probe team from the traffic division within a week. The move follows the Bombay High Court’s observation in the 2024 Kurla accident case, terming as “shocking” the fact that BEST drivers received no practical training of operating electric buses. The HC has granted bail to the BEST driver. In his petition to BEST administration, Sena UBT member Nitin Nandgaonkar submitted documentary proof and a detailed defect chart covering two private bus contractors. According to him, in one case, defects were found in eight buses, while another concerns five wet lease buses. He alleged that several of these vehicles continue to be deployed despite major technical faultsthat should have kept them off the road.Among the serious defects highlighted are steering lock issues, brake failure risks, brake liner problems, poor overall vehicle condition, lack of safety measures and inadequate maintenance leading to repeated breakdowns. He warned that faults in critical systems, such as steering and brakes, can directly result in crashes and mishaps, putting not only passengers but also pedestrians at risk.Nandgaonkar further alleged that in some cases, engineers identified defects and insisted on repairs, but buses were later shown as “repaired” and returned to service without proper rectification. In one instance, he claimed that steering lock work was marked completed, but during a second inspection, the defect was not properly attended to, leaving a continuing threat to public safety. He also said in some cases, second checks were not conducted at all.A senior BEST official, however, said all wet lease buses undergo regular snap inspections and surprise technical checks at depots. Critical systems, such as steering, braking, tyres, suspension, structural condition, electrical systems and overall operational fitness, are examined. If any defect or maintenance lapse is found, immediate corrective action is initiated, including withholding deployment, directing repairs, technical re-verification before re-induction and imposing contractual penalties where warranted. The official maintained that buses with safety-critical defects, especially involving steering or braking, are not allowed to operate unless rectified and certified fit.Nandgaonkar also questioned accountability, asking whether wet lease operators faced penalties for deploying poorly maintained buses. He demanded regular road worthiness checks, annual fitness tests by the Regional Transport Office, a high-level independent inquiry, strict action against guilty contractors and officials, and a rule that no bus should operate without written clearance from the engineering department.AIMIM’s Faisal Khan also raised concerns over passenger comfort and safety, saying there have been cases of air-conditioning failures in older buses, a serious issue during the summer months.

‘Keep the oil, anyone?’ Trump jabs allies as Iran blockade hits supplies

‘Keep the oil, anyone?’ Trump jabs allies as Iran blockade hits supplies

US President Donald Trump has mocked international allies over escalating fuel shortages, taunting nations to “keep the oil” as the Iran-Israel-US conflict enters its 36th day. In a sarcastic outburst, posted to Truth Social on Saturday, Trump wrote, “Keep the oil, anyone?” targeting countries like the UK that have expressed alarm over soaring energy prices while refusing to participate in military strikes against Tehran.

Trump Truth post

.

The jab comes as the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues to choke global supply lines, leaving the UK and other non-combatant nations grappling with severe petrol and gas deficits. Trump’s remarks appear designed to pressure these governments into joining “Operation Roaring Lion,” the US-led military campaign currently striking Iranian infrastructure. The US President’s digital taunt follows a series of aggressive warnings issued from the White House. He recently suggested that the world could either “go get oil from inflamed Iran” or purchase it directly from American reserves at a premium.Trump also reiterated that the US could unilaterally seize Iranian oil fields and take control of the Strait of Hormuz by force. He previously vowed to strike Iranian targets “20 times harder” if the maritime disruptions do not cease immediately.
