Doctors warn against frequent use of morning-after pills

NEW DELHI: There may be troubling news for women who rely heavily on morning-after pills to avoid pregnancy. Doctors warn that frequent use of emergency contraceptive pills can disrupt hormonal balance and menstrual cycles, cautioning that the medication is meant only for unexpected situations and should not be used as a routine method of birth control.Gynaecologists say the pill is intended for emergencies such as contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse, but many women are increasingly using it repeatedly within short spans of time.“Emergency contraception is a very useful tool when there is an unplanned situation,” said Dr Aparna Sharma, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, AIIMS. “But when it is used regularly it creates multiple problems. Compared to regular contraception, it is less effective, so the chances of pregnancy are higher if someone relies only on emergency pills.”Doctors say one of the most common problems reported by women who use the pill repeatedly is disruption of the menstrual cycle. Periods may be delayed, unusually heavy, or accompanied by spotting between cycles.“Emergency pills contain a high dose of hormones. Frequent use can disturb ovulation and lead to irregular menstrual cycles,” Dr Sharma said.Dr Rahul Manchanda, senior consultant in endoscopic gynaecology at PSRI Hospital, said the medication can trigger several short-term side effects.“The common short-term side effects include headaches, nausea, vomiting, abnormal spotting or bleeding and menstrual irregularities,” he said. “These pills are intended for emergency situations. Frequent or indiscriminate use can disturb menstrual health and hormonal balance.”Repeated hormonal exposure may also interfere with ovulation patterns over time, potentially affecting reproductive health, doctors say.Another concern is that emergency pills do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.“Barrier methods like condoms remain essential because emergency pills only prevent pregnancy and do not protect against infections,” Dr Sharma said.Experts say there is no medically fixed limit on how many emergency pills can be taken in a month. However, doctors emphasise that needing them repeatedly usually indicates a need for a more reliable contraceptive method.

Punjab: Police officer beaten to death in village near Amritsar

AMRITSAR: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was allegedly beaten to death over a personal dispute at his native village, Jagdev Kalan, near Amritsar on Saturday Friday night. Police have arrested five suspects and raids are being conducted to nab the rest, Mir added. The ASI’s wife, Harjit Kaur, alleged that the group attacked him over a domestic dispute. 'He handles unruly MPs from big families well': PM Modi lauds Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
PM Modi lauds Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

NEW DELHI: Two days before he faces the opposition’s resolution to remove him from office, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday received wholehearted endorsement from PM Modi, who mixed praise for his work with a swipe at BJP’s rivals by saying Birla handles even some “arrogant and unruly” members from big families well and “insults no one”. “He endures bitter words of everyone and, you must have seen, always wears a smile,” Modi said in a virtual address at the stone-laying ceremony for the Kota Bundi airport in Birla’s constituency. Birla faces accusation from opposition MPs of being “blatantly partisan”.PM Modi: Speaker above partisan politicsBirla received praise from Modi for his impartiality. He is not member of any group and is above partisan politics, the PM said. Modi said Birla is as excellent an MP as he is an outstanding Speaker and is completely dedicated to the Constitution and parliamentary system. He is like the head of family who works to take everyone along and respects MPs and their sentiments, Modi said. “Sometimes when arrogant and unruly students from big families come to Parliament who cannot help creating disturbance, he handles them like the head of the House,” he said, in a pointed swipe at key opposition functionaries such as Rahul Gandhi. Birla is adored by everyone, he said.Birla’s ruling disallowing Rahul from quoting from the unpublished memoir of former Army chief M M Naravane during the first half of the budget session had triggered fiery protest from opposition members, causing days of chaos. As one incident led to another, including Birla’s statement that he urged Modi to call off his scheduled speech in the House due to his apprehension that some women MPs of Congress, who had assembled around Modi’s allotted seat, could do something unwarranted, the opposition gave a notice signed by 118 MPs seeking his removal. The House is scheduled to take up the opposition’s resolution when it meets on Monday. BJP-led NDA’s strong majority has made the defeat of the motion all but certain.

Random Musing: Donald Trump has only one red line. Kristi Noem crossed it… | World News

Random Musing: Donald Trump has only one red line. Kristi Noem crossed it...

During his reality TV days when he hosted The Apprentice, Donald Trump loved using the phrase: You are fired. It was his catchphrase, synonymous with other Trumpisms: gilded gold designs that look like they belong in the Ottoman Empire, membership of the WWE Hall of Fame, stream-of-consciousness speeches that hint at logorrhoea, taking credit for ceasefires, describing all objects as beautiful, and in general being unhinged Americana on steroids and Diet Coke. However, in his second term as President – after coming back from political exile and dodging a bullet – Trump is quite reluctant to use his catchphrase. In his first term, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution of Trump’s A-team, when he was still surrounded by old-school Republicans, Trump fired 60 candidates and had a turnover rate of 92%, with only five people remaining in their original posts by the time his tenure at the White House was done.To ensure that there isn’t a repeat this time around, Trump has assembled acolytes who are the living embodiment of Peter’s Principle, whose fealty is to Trump and only Trump, and who all sound like they are auditioning for a parody Hollywood movie, as evidenced by this mashed-up White House video with the Mortal Kombat leitmotif and some of popular culture’s most memorable characters, showing that even the most incomplete, irascible, and irredeemable regimes are capable of fine propaganda.Read: Why Trump’s Washington is St Petersburg The Trump 2.0 Dream Team includes a Director of National Intelligence (DNI) who is so out of the intelligence picture that her aides joke that DNI stands for Do Not Invite; a head of the FBI who is more in the news for partying than doing his job; an education secretary who thinks AI is ‘steak sauce’; a Secretary of War who hit a man with an axe on live TV; and a Secretary of Health who believes in anti-vaccine conspiracy theories. It’s like a cabinet of Sarah Palins, except they all make Sarah Palin look like a member of the Mensa Society. It brings to mind an epic Yes Minister line: “The industry minister is the idlest man in town, the education minister is illiterate, and the employment minister is unemployable.”There are many, many more examples but the space-time constraints dictate we move to the MVP in question: Kristi Noem.As a youngster, Noem famously won the award of South Dakota Snow Queen, foreshadowing the nickname that would be bestowed upon her in recenttimes: ICE Barbie. ICE, for the uninitiated, is the US’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which has been waging war with suburban moms while pretending to pick up illegal immigrants.Once talked about as Trump’s running mate, she was out of contention after it emerged that she had shot and killed her dog, which was too much even for Team Trump.

Trumpian Paradise Lost

During her tenure as Governor of South Dakota, she ticked every MAGA checkbox: being so vehemently anti-abortion that she even opposes stem-cell research; denying the scientific consensus on climate change; opposing subsidised childcare; threatening a state employee for denying her daughter a real-estate agent’s licence; getting banned from Native American tribal lands for claiming they were hand-in-glove with Mexican cartels; running an anti-drug campaign titled “Meth. We are on it”; and famously bragging that her two-year-old granddaughter had several guns. All of which makes her perfect to be the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for all internal threats in America.Noem immediately burnished her credentials by having her handbag stolen – with $3000 in cash and her government access cards – from a DC restaurant. But what did Noem do to get Trump to become the second person from Trump’s A-team to be fired, the first being former National Security Advisor (NSA) Mike Walz, who added an Atlantic journalist to a Signal war chat to discuss bombings? She wasn’t fired when ICE agents shot dead two Americans in Minnesota. She wasn’t even fired when she called one of those shot dead, a Veterans Affairs nurse, a ‘domestic terrorist’ or lied about him using a gun.She wasn’t fired for calling the FBI ‘corrupt’.She escaped the rope when reports showed that ICE was releasing untrained agents on the streets due to an AI goof-up.She escaped the axe when ICE arrested South Korean citizens working in a Hyundai plant. She didn’t get laid off for buying luxury jets with barely any seating to deport illegal immigrants. She even survived waving a Rolex at an El Salvador prison, an alleged affair with an aide, and not releasing FEMA funds, much to the chagrin of even Republicans. It was all good. Until it wasn’t.Franz Kafka wrote in the Zürau Aphorisms: “There are two cardinal sins from which all others spring: impatience and laziness. Because of impatience we were driven out of Paradise, because of laziness we cannot return.” In Trumpian paradise, there are also two original sins: blaming Trump for something and being caught on camera blaming Trump for something.

‘Trump Knew’: Kristi Noem’s Answer To DHS’ $220M Ad Campaign That Led To Her Firing I Watch

Gil Kerlikowske, a former commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, told the NYT: “The loyalty is absolutely the key. It’s a good rule of thumb to never throw your boss under the bus and with him in particular I think it’s the cardinal sin and she certainly violated that.”Noem’s cardinal sins occurred during a Senate hearing. When asked if Trump approved of the $200 million-plus advertising spots that had been given to her political consultants, Noem answered in the affirmative.

Donald Trump - You are fired

A report in the NYT states that when Trump was shown the clips of her answers, Trump got angry, which is quite something given he has a lot on his mind including a literal war.So, what now for Kristi Noem?Trump has announced that she will be Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas – which sounds as made-up as the FIFA Peace Prize – and makes one wonder if someone came up with it while watching a Marvel Cinematic Universe rerun. One half expects the job description to include assembling the Avengers. Now it’s hard not to feel a little sympathetic for Noem. Being a woman in MAGA is as hard as being an Indian in MAGA, perhaps even more so given one has to not only debate oneself by celebrating constant misogyny but also contour one’s looks for a particular aesthetic. Noem did almost everything that Trump asked her to do and was still cast out.

Kristi Noem Interrupted by 'Exorcist' Shouts in Congress #snl

Earlier in December 2025, protesters had interrupted Noem’s hearing in Congress by shouting a line from the cult classic The Exorcist at her: “Stop ICE. The power of Christ compels you.” It wasn’t Christ that finally exorcised her from Trumpland. Just disagreeing with Trump.

'Sab same line chipka rahe hain': Suryakumar Yadav shrugs off Mitchell Santner's 'silence the crowd' remark
Suryakumar Yadav responded to comments made by Mitchell Santner about silencing the home crowd in the final

NEW DELHI: India captain Suryakumar Yadav on Saturday responded to comments made by Mitchell Santner about silencing the home crowd in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad, saying such remarks have become common before major matches.India will face New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.Earlier in the day, New Zealand captain Santner had said his team would look to quieten the home crowd during the final. His statement was similar to one made by Pat Cummins before the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at the same venue, when Australia defeated India.“The goal is to silence the crowd. There are a lot of variables in T20 cricket, and it is fickle at times,” the 34-year-old said. “If we go out about our business the same way we can upset another big team. There’s obviously a lot of pressure on in there (on India) to win this World Cup at home.”

T20 World Cup: Mitchell Santner press conference before IND vs NZ

Responding to the remark, Suryakumar said such statements are now repeated often before major games.“Sab he same line chipka rahe hai. Kuch to naya bolo (Everyone is now saying the same thing. Come up with something new),” Suryakumar Yadav told reporters in the pre-match press conference. The 35-year-old India captain, who is the second-highest run-scorer for the team in the 2026 T20 World Cup, said leading the side in a World Cup final comes with pressure but he wants to enjoy the occasion. He added that the atmosphere in the Indian dressing room remains positive as the team prepares for the final.“It’s a special feeling and everyone is very excited. We have a very good environment in the group. We are looking forward to the big final,” he said.“As a leader, there would be pressure; I cannot deny that. Definitely, there would be added pressure, the excitement is there of playing a World Cup final, that too in India,” Suryakumar added.India became the first defending champions to reach the final of the T20 World Cup. They will look to win the title and also become the first host nation to lift the trophy when they face New Zealand on Sunday.

Gold, cash & more! TVK chief Vijay wooes women voters, promises 'super-good regime'

‘Never dependent on permission’: Government official on US ‘waiver’ for India to import Russian oil

‘Never dependent on permission’: Government official on US ‘waiver’ for India to import Russian oil

India has never depended on permission from any country to purchase Russian oil, and the recent US sanctions waiver merely removes friction rather than shaping India’s energy policy, a senior government functionary said, according to PTI.The remarks came after the United States announced a temporary 30-day waiver allowing Indian refiners to buy Russian oil cargoes amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions linked to the conflict with Iran.

‘India Were Good Actors’: Bessent’s Oil Waiver Remark Triggers Cong’s ‘Humiliation’ Attack On Modi

“The US waiver of sanctions removes friction. It does not define India’s policy, which is governed by the energy trilemma, affordability, availability and sustainability, for every Indian household,” the government functionary said.Rejecting opposition criticism over the waiver, the official said India’s energy purchases are guided by national interest. “India will buy oil from wherever it is available. Our oil purchases will not be governed by any hollow slogans. India has never depended on permission from any country to buy Russian oil,” another senior government official said, as quoted by the agency. The functionary also stressed that India’s fuel supply remains secure. “The message from the Centre to every Indian household is clear that the country’s fuel supply is fully secure. The government is continuously monitoring the situation and will act, as it always has, in the interest of every citizen,” the official said.India currently holds more than 250 million barrels of crude oil and refined products, equivalent to seven to eight weeks of buffer stocks, stored across strategic reserves, storage tanks, pipelines, terminal facilities and vessels already in transit to Indian ports, the official said. India now sources oil from around 40 countries, and domestic refineries continue to operate normally.“No petrol pump has run dry in 12 years. What certain voices are calling a crisis is, in fact, the proof of preparation. India’s energy governance has given us the insulation we need,” the functionary said.Responding to opposition criticism, the official said the allegations lacked substance and suggested critics were focusing on selective language. “Clearly shows the opposition is unaware of how countries frame statements and use bombast keeping their domestic audiences and politics in mind.”The official also pointed to a precedent during the previous Congress-led government, noting that India had adjusted crude imports under US sanctions earlier. In 2013, the US state department said India had reduced purchases of Iranian crude to qualify for sanctions exemptions under Section 1245 of the US national defense authorization act (NDAA).Quoting then US secretary of state John Kerry, the official cited the statement: “I am pleased to announce that China, India, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Taiwan have again qualified for an exception to sanctions outlined in section 1245 of the national defense authorization act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2012…”Officials said India’s supplier base has expanded from 27 countries to 40 over the past decade, which they said has helped maintain stable energy supplies even during global disruptions.
