Bombay high court directs Center to decide Yemeni nationals visa extension plea | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Bombay High Court recently directed Centre to decide a Yemeni national’s application dated Aug 30, 2024, for extension of visa expeditiously within eight weeks. The man, Fahd Saeed, came to India on a student visa in 2007 to study in Pune and married an Indian national in 2011. He has been without a visa since 2014, said the Centre, as his visa given to a spouse of Indian nations required registration within 14 days of entry, which special public prosecutor Rui Rodrigues, who appeared for the FRRO (Foreigner Regional Registration Office), said he did not apply for and made a first violation. But Rodrigues also made a very categorical statement that authorities have not found any material to show or indicate that Fahd is a threat to national security, the HC bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and Sandesh Patil noted. The bench added that in such background and since he has a family here with two small children, the authorities to consider his plea and if extension of visa is granted he must make necessary application under Section 7A of the Citizenship Act, which shall also be considered on urgent basis. The HC, however, added that if rejected, no coercive action to be taken against the Yemeni national for four more weeks to enable him to appeal.Harjinder Kaur, 34, filed a petition to seek relief for her husband. Initially, it was filed as a habeas corpus plea alleging his illegal custody by the authorities and to quash a Nov 2023 order of Deputy Commissioner of Police, EOW and Cyber, Addl Charge Special Branch, Pune City, which directed him not to move out of the premises of Kondhwa Police Station. That stage has since passed, the HC said, and he is under no restriction as of today. However, the petitioner’s husband’s stay in India without any valid documents is still a contentious issue and her lawyer Wesley Menezes sought orders for early decision on his visa extension plea, which he made in 2015. The plea before the HC said due to conditions in Yemen he had to take a passport from Kuala Lampur and he had no intention to stay illegally in India.Menezes also submitted, “In between, he faced a criminal prosecution in India from which, he was ultimately acquitted.”The HC also hear state additional public prosecutor Mahalaxmi G.The wife said if visa is not extended the family would be separated. The HC said authorities undoubtedly can take this possibility into consideration. “Therefore, the law will have to take its own course and authorities ill have to act within four corners of law with humanitarian ground as a background,” the HC said after Centre said the 2024 visa extension plea was pending due to pendency of the petition and submitted that if court passes directions the FRRO will consider his plea in a time-bound manner.

State highways begins widening of Sardar Patel Road in Chennai | Chennai News

Chennai: The state highways department has initiated the long-pending widening of Sardar Patel Road to a length of 2.5km from Taluk Office Road junction to Madhya Kailash. The works worth 45 crores, which began recently and is going on in full-swing, will be finished by May.The project has gathered pace over the past two weeks, with land acquisition carried out from Anna University to facilitate the expansion of the four-lane stretch into six-lane. In multiple parts next to IIT Madras, Kotturpuram junction and beyond, the highway has already claimed the land, expanded the stretch with sand and is yet to relay the road. The expansion will decongest Kotturpuram junction making it signal-free. The sixth and left-most lane will facilitate a free-left for vehicles from Guindy to Kotturpuram, beneath the IIT Madras flyover, while vehicles from Kotturpuram heading to Guindy will take a left on Sardar Patel Road, and take a U-turn beneath the Madhya Kailash L-flyover, while the vehicles from Adyar and OMR heading straight to Guindy on the Sardar Patel Road will have a thoroughfare and vehicles will have a free-right to Kotturpuram. An official said 100 workers are currently engaged at the site, and that the underground utilities, including EB cables, have already been shifted.D Balaji of Kasturba Nagar residents welfare association in Adyar said a two-way flyover at Madhya Kailash would have further eased traffic. Adyar zonal chairman R Durairaj said congestion has eased on one side, but traffic snarls persist during peak hours as the road remains narrow. “The six-lane road would solve the problem, and enhance motorist safety, reduce accidents, and benefit commuters travelling to the airport, as well as employees and residents who use the stretch regularly,” he said.

Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora writes to Maharashtra dy CM Eknath Shinde over pedestrian pathway for Nepean Sea Road–Promenade Link | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora has written to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde urging intervention to create a pedestrian access route from Nepean Sea Road to the Coastal Road promenade, citing inconvenience faced by residents. In his letter dated March 30, Deora, who chairs the Parliamentary Committee on Subordinate Legislation, forwarded a representation from the South Mumbai Residents Association (SMRA), highlighting the lack of direct pedestrian connectivity to the promenade.According to the representation by local residents , the nearest access point to the promenade is currently around 500 metres away. Residents, particularly senior citizens, women and tourists, are forced to take longer routes due to the absence of a pathway through an MSRDC plot located adjacent to Embassy Apartments. The association has requested that a pedestrian pathway be created through this plot to improve accessibility to the promenade.Taking note of the concerns, Deora has urged Shinde to consider the request and issue necessary directions to the concerned authorities, emphasising the need for improved public convenience and safety. The Coastal Road promenade has emerged as a major public space in south Mumbai, with residents increasingly calling for better last-mile connectivity and pedestrian-friendly access points. There’s also been a growing demand for a group of local residents in the same localities for authorities to create a south bound exit from the coastal road towards Nepensea road.

Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka struck a calm and reassuring tone after his side’s disappointing defeat, urging patience and belief as the IPL 2026 season unfolds. Taking to X, Goenka reminded fans that “this is a long season” and backed his captain and team to “respond with strength,” while also thanking supporters who turned up at the Ekana Stadium.

His message came on a night where LSG were outplayed by the Delhi Capitals, who pulled off a remarkable six-wicket win despite a shaky start. Chasing a modest 142, DC were reeling at 26 for 4 before Sameer Rizvi produced a composed and match-winning unbeaten 70. Batting with maturity beyond his years, Rizvi stitched together a decisive 119-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs, who played a steady supporting role.

LSG IPL retentions, releases, trades: Why the biggest buy – Rishabh Pant – is biggest problem

For LSG, it was a match that raised more questions than answers. Their batting faltered early, managing just 141 after being put in. Tactical decisions, including the reshuffling of the top order by captain Rishabh Pant, did not pay off. The innings never found momentum against a disciplined DC bowling attack led by T Natarajan, Kuldeep Yadav, and Lungi Ngidi.Even when LSG had DC under pressure early in the chase, they could not capitalise. Rizvi’s calculated assault slowly took the game away, exposing the lack of cutting edge in LSG’s bowling during the middle overs.Yet, Goenka’s words reflect a broader perspective. One defeat does not define a campaign. For a team still trying to find its rhythm and balance, belief from the top can be crucial. As the tournament progresses, LSG will hope to correct their tactical missteps and rediscover their intensity. The season, as Goenka pointed out, is far from written.

3 lakh followers, 7 guns, 371 cartridges: Was Maharashtra’s ‘Pookie Don’ raising a ‘mini army’? | Thane News

Thane builder-influencer ‘Pookie Don’ arrested after 371 cartridges, 167 air gun pellets

THANE: A 55-year-old builder and social media influencer ‘Pookie Don’ was arrested in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly possessing a large cache of weapons, police said. The accused, Surendra Panduranga Patil—who has over three lakh followers on Instagram—was taken into custody on Saturday night, barely a week after securing bail in another case, an official added. Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch team raided Patil’s bungalow in Dombivli’s Dawdi area late Saturday and recovered the weapons concealed behind a fake panel in a newly installed shoe rack that reportedly did not match the house interiors. Police seized five country-made pistols and revolvers, some marked “Made in USA” along with two air guns, 371 cartridges, 167 pellets, a sword, a button knife, another sharp-edged weapon, and two steel rods. The total value of the haul is estimated at Rs 10 lakh. Officials said the volume of ammunition indicated the stockpile was fully functional. While Patil has claimed the weapons were merely props for his gangster-themed social media content, investigators are probing whether he was planning to assemble a “mini-army” or supply arms to local criminals. His Instagram reels earned him the nicknames ‘Pookie Uncle’ and ‘Pookie Don’. Projecting himself as a local strongman online, Patil has amassed over 3 lakh followers, with his quirky dance videos often drawing lakhs of views. In several clips, he is seen brandishing firearms and even showcasing the police protection he once had, before it was later withdrawn. A history-sheeter, Patil has now been booked under the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act.(With PTI inputs)

Ravi Varma’s ‘Yashoda & Krishna’ fetches record-shattering Rs 167 crore | India News

For the Indian art market, a big shot in the arm has come from Cyrus S Poonawalla, industrialist and founder of Serum Institute of India. His landmark price for Raja Ravi Varma’s painting Yashoda and Krishna has made it the most expensive work of modern Indian art ever sold at auction, fetching Rs 167.2 crore ($18 million approx) after an intense bidding war at a Saffronart sale. This price eclipses the record held by M F Husain’s Untitled (Gram Yatra), which sold for over Rs 118cr last year to Delhi-based Kiran Nadar.Poonawalla called the acquisition both a privilege and a responsibility. “This national treasure deserves to be made available for public viewing periodically,” he said, “and it will be my endeavour to facilitate this.”Born in 1848 into an aristocratic family in the princely state of Travancore, Varma is best known for his fusion of European technique with an Indian sensibility. Beyond the canvas, he set up alithographic press in 1894 to mass-produce his paintings as affordable prints, bringing Hindu iconography into the homes of ordinary Indians for the first time. His images of the gods remain so embedded in popular consciousness that they still shape how millions of Indians picture their deities today.

Varma’s work sells for double the estimate

Painted in the 1890s, at the height of Varma’s powers, ‘Yashoda and Krishna’ renders a tender, layered portrait of maternal love through the mythological figures of infant Krishna and his foster mother Yashoda. One of the artist’s most celebrated compositions, the painting, acquired by Cyrus S Poonawalla , had carried a pre-sale estimate of Rs 80 crore to Rs 120 crore — a figure the final hammer price more than doubled.Saffronart president and co-founder Minal Vazirani called it a defining moment. “…This is not just a milestone for the market — it is a powerful reminder of the enduring cultural and emotional resonance of Indian art,” he said.
