Heart health: How does inadequate or irregular sleep affect the heart and blood vessels, and what mechanisms could trigger cardiac events? |

A proper good quality sleep is one of the primary determinants of optimal cardiovascular health. Why is sleep so important? And what do you mean by a proper and a good quality sleep? In medical terms, a proper good quality sleep is one which is composed of four to five cycles of light, deep and rapid eye movement sleep. Now, but this is a technical term.In layman’s term, a good quality sleep is uninterrupted sleep for at least six to eight hours.

Why is sleep so important?

Now, the importance of sleep is basically derived from studies in which people who are sleep deprived by pathological disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and their correlation with cardiovascular health. Subsequently, in normal population or in people who are sleep deprived because of emotional factors, social factors, and because of personal factors, such as the constant availability of entertainment and information at the click of finger, which leads to long night hours and constant working on the desktop or the tablet or the mobile can lead to sleep deprivation and poor quality sleep.

Impact of Sleep on Brain Function and Mental Well-being

What happens during normal good quality sleep?

During normal good quality sleep, there are various changes which happen in the internal systems of the heart like the cardiovascular system, the hormonal system and the internal metabolic milieu. In the cardiovascular system, there is a 10% drop in your blood pressure and heart rate. This is called as a nocturnal drip.In patients who are deprived of sleep, this nocturnal drip does not happen. And one of the earliest sign of patient developing hypertension is the absence of this nocturnal drip. Second is your hormonal regulation.Normally, we have a significant amount of cortisol release, which happens during the early morning hours, which tends to wane off. But people who are sleep deprived, there is a 30% less amount of cortisol secretion during early morning hours and increased cortisol secretion in the afternoon hours. Third thing, the third thing, the repair and the regeneration process tends to be significantly blunted in patients who are chronically sleep deprived. These leads to increased chances of cell injury and increased occurrence of chronic inflammation. Now we all know this chronic inflammation has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, insulin resistance and heart failures. Hence, an optimal and a good quality sleep is necessary and vital for the maintenance of cardiovascular health. If in chronic sleep deprivation tends to increase the risk of hypertension, arrhythmias, metabolic dysregulation, obesity, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure. In patients who already have hypertension, who already have blood pressure, chronic sleep deprivation tends to worsen their already pre-existing diseases. So if you have a patient who has got hypertension or diabetes, which is not well controlled, who is requiring mental, who is requiring multiple drugs, just inquire about the quality of sleep. Most often you will notice that the quality of sleep is very very poor. Hence, counselling of such patients about improving their sleep quality tends to improve the cardiovascular health of the patient.Dr. Irfan Khan, Associate Director – Cardiology, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital Powai, Mumbai

WPL 2026: 3 franchises that can target Alyssa Healy in the mega auction

Australia captain and explosive opening batter Alyssa Healy is set to feature prominently in the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 mega auction. Healy impressed cricket fans worldwide with her exceptional performance as captain at the recently concluded 2025 Women’s World Cup. She scored back-to-back centuries, including a historic unbeaten 113 against Bangladesh that helped Australia qualify for the semi-finals. Known for her aggressive style and wicketkeeping skills, Healy remains one of the most sought-after players in international women’s cricket going into the WPL auction.

Buy or sell: Stock recommendation by brokers for November 26, 2025

Jefferies initiated its coverage of LG Electronics India with a buy rating and a target price of Rs 1,900. Analysts said they view LG Electronics India as a strong play on the country’s discretionary spends, given its diversified mix. The company offers strong moats in the form of market leadership in multiple products, premium brand recall, new launches, entrenched distribution and backward integration resulting in industry-leading margins and high return ratios. They also feel the company’s cash on the balance sheet can support future growth.JP Morgan has an overweight rating on Reliance Industries with the target price upped to Rs 1,727 from Rs 1,695 earlier. Analysts said that the RIL stock is up 27% so far in the year, outperforming the 17% gain in nifty. Yet, they retain positive bias into 2026 for three key reasons: Its valuations relative to peers (DMart, Bharti Airtel) are still attractive as RIL still trades at about 15% holding company discount to these stocks, earnings drag from weak refining and petchem businesses through FY24 and FY25 is over, and forecast earnings growth should be much better. They feel that RIL’s current refining strength has potential to drive upgrades. For the company, the catalysts in 2026 are the Jio IPO, tariff increase, commissioning of new energy segments and more stable retail growth. These factors could be supportive of the stock.Citigroup has a buy rating on Max Healthcare Institute with the target price at Rs 1,460. Analysts said that their main takeaways from the management meet were these: The management expects a strong growth trajectory, supported by rising occupancy, improving case mix, and improving profitability at Dwarka and Noida. The issue about cashless facility by insurance companies is fully resolved with forward tariff corrections. The recent CGHS price revision provides a structural uplift to average revenue per occupied bed (ARPOB) and margins with full impact seen in FY27. The company also said its three major brownfield projects are commissioning in Q3FY26 with no earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) drag.Macquarie has an outperform rating on HDFC Bank with the target price at Rs 1,200. Analysts said the clear messaging from the bank was that it was seeing good growth traction post GST rate cuts. The management retained guidance for loan growth to be faster than the system in FY27. The lender is well-placed due to prudent provisioning and contingent buffers with no major impact expected from new expected credit loss norms.Motilal Oswal Securities initiated its coverage of Blue Star with the target price at Rs 1,950. Analysts said that Blue Star’s room AC (RAC) market share is rising to about 14% with the company aiming for about 15% share by FY27. They said that the near-term RAC demand is soft due to mild summer and the GST-led delays. However, they see the long-term RAC growth intact with low penetration and strong structural drivers. The company also has a strong leadership position in commercial refrigeration and robust order book in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) and commercial AC (CAC) supports growth. Analysts also expect margin expansion via operating leverage and efficiencies, and expect unitary cooling products (UCP) revenue to dip in FY26 but rebound strongly thereafter. They also said exports were weak in the near term but expected to scale-up post FY27. And the stock’s valuation is seen as fair after the recent rerating.Disclaimer: The opinions, analyses and recommendations expressed herein are those of brokerage and do not reflect the views of The Times of India. NEW DELHI: Senior IAS officer Santosh Verma, state president of the Anusuchit Jati-Janjati Adhikari Karmachari Sangh (AJJAKS) in Madhya Pradesh, has drawn sharp criticism after a video of a remark he made at an event in Bhopal went viral, prompting demands for a police case and disciplinary action. Speaking on whether reservation should be granted on economic basis he said, “until a Brahmin donates his daughter to my son or has a relationship with him, reservations should continue.”

‘Until Brahmin Donates His Daughter’: IAS Officer’S Remark Sparks Row, Issues Clarification

The All India Brahmin Society condemned Verma’s statement, its state president Pushpendra Mishra termed the comment “indecent” and “casteist,” alleging that it insults Brahmin daughters and violates All India Services Conduct Rules. In a post on X Mishra said “An FIR should be lodged immediately for comments made against Brahmin daughters. The IAS officer’s remarks are indecent, objectionable, and an insult to the Brahmin community. If a criminal case is not filed soon, the Brahmin Samaj will launch a statewide protest.”He added that the comments were inappropriate at a time when schemes such as Ladli Laxmi, Ladli Behna, and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao focus on the dignity and welfare of girls. He warned that it would pursue both legal and street-level agitation if the government fails to act. “The government should immediately take the strictest possible action against IAS officer Santosh Verma, otherwise the Brahmin society will fight against IAS officer Santosh Verma in court as well as on the road,” Mishra said. Amid the escalating controversy, Verma issued a clarification, stating that his comments were taken out of context during a discussion on whether reservation should be linked to economic criteria. He told ANI, “my aim was not to create a political uproar… I had said that if I am financially independent and not socially backward anymore, then my children should receive ‘roti-beti’ treatment from society. I don’t have ill will against any community. I did not want to hurt women’s sentiments. I express regret if I have hurt anyone. But some people propagated only a portion of what I had said.”

Iceland Cricket takes a brutal dig at Gautam Gambhir amid India’s below-par show in Test cricket

As India stares at the possibility of a 0-2 Test series defeat against South Africa, the spotlight has firmly shifted to head coach Gautam Gambhir. With India’s red-ball form dipping alarmingly under his tenure, debates around his future have intensified. Adding fuel to the fire, Iceland Cricket—famous for their witty social media presence—took a sharp, humorous jab at Gambhir, further amplifying chatter around India’s Test struggles.

Iceland Cricket’s tongue-in-cheek swipe on Gautam Gambhir goes viral

With conversations heating up regarding Gambhir’s Test coaching credentials, Iceland Cricket stepped into the narrative with a trademark sarcastic remark. In a post on X, the board announced—mock-seriously—that Gambhir would not be considered for their national team’s coaching role.

“To all our fans, no, Gautam Gambhir will not be invited to be our new national team coach. That position is already filled and we won 75% of our matches in 2025,” wrote Iceland Cricket.

The humour struck instantly. While Iceland Cricket’s fixtures generally involve lower-tier opponents, their chosen comparison was a pointed commentary on India’s recent decline in Test cricket—a stark contrast to the dominance the team once enjoyed at home. The dig resonated with fans across the world, many interpreting it as a reflection of growing dissatisfaction with India’s Test performances under Gambhir.

Mounting pressure on Gambhir as Test results dip

Even though the BCCI has issued no official hint of removing Gambhir, the pressure surrounding his position as the Test coach is rising steadily. His role across all three formats is now under intense scrutiny, with experts suggesting the board may consider splitting responsibilities if results do not improve.

India’s red-ball record under Gambhir paints an unusually grim picture:

  • Home dominance shattered: India have lost four of their last six home Tests, including an unprecedented 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand—ending a decade-long fortress-like run.
  • South Africa threatening history: India have not lost a home series to South Africa since 2000. A draw or defeat in the ongoing Guwahati Test would mark their first home series loss to the Proteas in 25 years.
  • Overall performance: The inconsistency across 18 Tests under Gambhir has become a focal point, making his future one of the most debated topics in Indian cricket.

‘DK Shivakumar will be CM soon’: Karnataka Congress MLA says ‘he’s 200% sure’ | Bengaluru News

'DK Shivakumar will be CM soon': Karnataka Congress MLA says 'he's 200% sure'
Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Ramanagara MLA Iqbal Hussain reiterated his confidence that the deputy chief minister would eventually take charge, declaring he was “200 per cent” sure DK Shivakumar will become the next chief minister.“I always stand by that statement… 200 per cent, he will become the CM soon. The high command will decide. As our leader (Shivakumar) said, the transfer of power is a secret deal among five to six party leaders, and those five to six people will decide,” he said.

‘All 140 MLAs Are Mine’: DK Shivakumar Amid Karnataka CM Speculation; Siddaramaiah Responds

A group of Karnataka Congress legislators who travelled to New Delhi to meet senior party leaders said on Tuesday that the high command would take a final call on the demand to elevate DK Shivakumar as the next chief minister. The visit comes amid mounting speculation over a possible change of leadership, with the Congress government completing the halfway mark of its five-year term on 20 November. According to party insiders, six MLAs seen as close to Shivakumar flew to the capital on Sunday night for discussions with central leaders. More legislators are expected to follow. Last week, around ten MLAs had also met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.Magadi MLA H C Balakrishna stressed that the decision on who should lead the government rests entirely with the central leadership, but urged them to settle the uncertainty.“We went to discuss with the high command to clear the confusion because a final decision is needed. Who becomes CM is not important; the current situation is detrimental to the Congress party. The high command should intervene and put an end to this,” he said, declining to say whether Mr Shivakumar’s elevation had specifically been discussed.Others used the Delhi meetings to push for younger leaders and fresh faces to be considered during the proposed cabinet reshuffle. Maddur MLA K M Uday said they had received positive signals from the leadership. He said senior MLAs had also urged the high command to end the “confusion” surrounding the leadership issue, adding that a decision was expected soon.Responding to reports that MLAs loyal to him had travelled to Delhi seeking his elevation, Shivakumar distanced himself from the lobbying efforts.“I have not called or spoken to any of them. I am not asking why they went. I don’t need to,” he told reporters, adding that they might have gone in search of ministerial roles.
