While 18-year-old Estevão lit up Stamford Bridge with a stunning solo effort, lapses at the back hurt both European heavyweights. Pep Guardiola’s 100th Champions League match in charge of City turned sour as Bayer Leverkusen punished a heavily changed side with a 2-0 win. Guardiola rested almost his entire starting XI from the weekend loss to Newcastle, including Erling Haaland, but the reshuffle backfired. Alejandro Grimaldo put Leverkusen ahead in the 23rd minute with a precise low finish, before Patrik Schick doubled the lead with a well-placed header in the 54th. “It feels wonderful and we gave everything till the last second,” Schick told DAZN. Barcelona’s night was even more chaotic. Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, helped by Jules Koundé steering the ball into his own net after a defensive mix-up in the 27th minute. MUMBAI: To make it easier and cost-effective for investors who have lost certificates of securities (shares, bonds, mutual fund units) to get duplicates, markets regulator Sebi is proposing an easier process with a uniform set of forms. It’s also proposing to double the upper limit for issuance of the securities without an FIR and newspaper advertisement to Rs 10 lakh.Sebi is also planning to do away with the dual requirement of getting an affidavit and an indemnity bond while applying to get duplicate securities, and is backing a single affidavit-cum-indemnity bond. Such a process has been adopted by the Investor Education & Protection Fund Authority, a body under the finance ministry that deals with unclaimed stocks, mutual funds etc for returning funds to the rightful owners.

According to Sebi’s proposed circular, at present, there is a three-step process for issuance of duplicate securities. The investor needs to submit a copy of the FIR including e-FIR/police complaint/court injunction order/copy of the complaint with details of the securities, folio number, distinctive number range and certificate numbers. The investor also needs to issue a newspaper advertisement about the loss of securities. Then the investor has to submit an affidavit and an indemnity bond separately on a “non-judicial stamp paper of appropriate value” in a Sebi-prescribed format.“However, if the value of securities as on the date of submission of application, does not exceed Rs 5 lakh,” the first two steps are not required to be complied with, Sebi said. “It has been gathered that due to non-standardisation of documents and different approaches followed by registrar and transfer agents (RTAs) or listed companies, investors feel the pain of going for varied documentation for various listed companies.“Sebi received feedback from investors and other stakeholders in the system about easing some of these rules. It said that the current threshold of Rs 5 lakhs for availing simplified documentation for issuance of duplicate securities was prescribed several years ago. “Since then, the Indian securities market has expanded significantly in terms of market capitalisation, investor participation and average portfolio size. As a result, the monetary value of individual security holdings has increased materially.” In the changed scenario, the Rs 5-lakh limit does not reflect current market realities and imposes an avoidable procedural burden on investors, it said.

NEW DLEHI: China on Tuesday denied allegations that an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh was harassed or detained at Shanghai airport, insisting that its border checks were conducted strictly “in accordance with laws and regulations.” The statement came even as India lodged a strong diplomatic protest.The woman, Pema Wangjom Thongdok, a UK-based Indian passport holder, was travelling from London to Japan on November 21 when immigration officials reportedly flagged her passport as “invalid” because it listed Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace.

She later wrote on social media that she was held for around 18 hours, until officials at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened.Responding to PTI’s query on the incident, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the woman was not subjected to any coercive action.“During the entire time, China’s border inspection authorities carried out checks procedures in accordance with laws and regulations… no compulsory measures were taken on her, and there was no so-called ‘detaining’ or ‘harassing’,” Mao said, adding that the airline had provided “resting facilities and meals.”Mao also said Beijing’s position on the state, saying, “Zangnan is China’s territory, and China does not recognise the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”Citing sources agencies said, a demarche was issued to China in New Delhi and Beijing on the day of the incident, asserting that Arunachal Pradesh is an “indisputable” part of India and residents are entitled to travel on Indian passports. The Indian Consulate in Shanghai “extended the fullest assistance” to the passenger, officials added.Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu said he was “deeply shocked” and called the episode a “violation of international norms and an affront to the dignity of Indian citizens.”The Congress party, reacting sharply to Mao’s remarks, accused Beijing of making an “offensive” statement and urged the government to respond firmly. Mumbai: The Vakola police arrested five people, including a couple, for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old girl from Santacruz East and selling her in Panvel for Rs 1.80 lakh. The accused include the girl’s maternal uncle and aunt, as well as an auto-rickshaw driver and two others.On Saturday at 12.30 pm a woman approached the police claiming that her daughter had been kidnapped. “Since the offence involved a minor and was deemed serious and sensitive, seven teams worked over two consecutive days, analysing CCTV footage, conducting technical investigations and gathering confidential information to identify a suspicious auto-rickshaw and its driver,” said the police.The officer said it was learned that the auto-rickshaw operated out of Panvel. Eyewitnesses and CCTV recordings showed a couple travelling with the girl in the rickshaw between 2.00 and 3.00 am on Saturday. “We received information that a motorcyclist and two other suspects had been patrolling the area along with the couple who kidnapped the gir,” said an officer from Vakola police station.Without the vehicle number, investigators relied on the description of the auto-rickshaw. Using confidential leads, they arrested the rickshaw driver, Latif Abdul Majeed Sheikh (52) of Triptashila Chawl in Santacruz East, on Monday.Interrogation revealed that the kidnappers were the girl’s uncle, Lawrence Nickles Fernandes (42), and aunt, Mangal Dagdu Jadhav (38). They were traced and arrested at Vitthalwadi in Panvel. The pair had sold the girl to Karan Maruti Sanas for Rs 90,000.Following further technical investigation and information on Sanas, he was apprehended in Usrli Budruk, New Panvel, Raigad. He admitted selling the child to Vrinda Vinesh Chavan (60) and Anjali Ajit Korgaonkar (57) for Rs 1.80 lakh. During a search of Chavan’s residence in Panvel, police safely rescued the girl on Tuesday and returned her to her mother at Vakola station.The accused are identified as Latif Abdul Majeed Sheikh, Lawrence Nickles Fernandes, Mangal Dagdu Jadhav, Karan Maruti Sanas, Vrinda Vinesh Chavan and Anjali Ajit Korgaonkar.“We have arrested the accused and are trying to find out the motive behind the kidnapping and selling the girl,” said the officer.

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Tuesday suggested to the Centre that it bring back the pregnant Sunali Khatun, and five others, including her husband Danish Sekh and their minor son Sabir, who were deported to Bangladesh on grounds of being illegal immigrants, as an interim measure and inquire about their nationality on their return, reports Dhananjay Mahapatra. The court, however, called for tough measures against infiltrators.Appearing for the deportees, senior advocates Sanjay Hegde, Kapil Sibal and G Sankaranarayanan told a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi that Sunali, her husband and son have documents to prove citizenship and their deportation violated their fundamental rights. “They must be brought back as per Calcutta HC’s order,” they said.Hearing the Centre’s appeal against the HC order, the bench said, “Now that certain material, including landholding records and relatives’ statements, have come on record, why don’t you bring them back and inquire about their nationality? You hardly held any inquiry before deporting them.”Give deported people chance to prove their nationality: SCAs an interim measure, bring them back and hold an inquiry. Examine the documents produced by them or on their behalf and give them a chance to prove their nationality,” the bench said. However, it accepted that the removal of illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Indian soil is absolutely justified. The bench sought Centre’s response to its suggestion on Monday.In its appeal, Centre has challenged the Calcutta high court’s Sept 26 order quashing the detention order of June 24 and deportation order of June 26, and directing the home ministry to take all steps to bring back the six persons so deported within four weeks by working in coordination with high commission of India in Dhaka.Centre said that the six people in question had failed to produce any document to substantiate their claim of being Indian citizens or residing legally in India. After their deportation, a missing person/s complaint was filed with West Bengal police and the gram panchayat issued them domicile certificates. Thereafter, HCs of Delhi and Calcutta were petitioned simultaneously, with the petition before Delhi HC being withdrawn without disclosing that another is pending before Calcutta HC.It said the Delhi Police’s inquiry had established that the persons concerned were illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In fact, they themselves had admitted to the fact. The deportation orders were passed after following due procedure, Centre said. “Since India has open/porous land borders with many countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar, there is continuous threat of influx of illegal immigrants, and such influx has serious national security ramifications. There is an organised and well-orchestrated influx of illegal immigrants through various agents and touts for monetary considerations,” Centre argued.

Mumbai: Doctors say high air pollution levels may be making recovery from seasonal flu more difficult this time, as particulate matter aggravates airways. Even people with no underlying condition have their illness prolonged because of airway hyperreactivity.Amid a surge in load at OPDs, many patients are either those with chronic respiratory illnesses or even healthy people living near construction sites, where dust levels are high. Some areas like Mazgaon crossed the 300 AQI mark on Nov 11 and then again on Monday. Pulmonologist Dr Abhijit Ahuja has seen the worst impact in patients with severe conditions such as interstitial lung disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease living near construction sites. Mulund resident Sippy Patwari has spent over Rs 1 lakh on dust control nets and air purifiers to protect her elderly parents. Her 75-year-old father has bronchial asthma and her 68-year-old mother has asthma and allergic rhinitis. The family has largely stopped stepping outdoors and Patwari often finds herself double-masking with N95s. “We didn’t even spend this much on protecting ourselves during the peak of Covid,” she says. Dr Chetan Jain, another pulmonologist, says even in healthy individuals, lung functioning tests show a reduction in capacity if there are frequent episodes of cough and breathlessness. “People need to start masking. We recommend minimising outdoor activities. There is very little else people can do.” Dr Anita Mathew, an internal medicine expert, says it is recommended that people have annual influenza jabs, especially if they have pre-existing conditions. “It prevents severity and is better than spending heavily on medical bills.” The doctors say another concern is that haphazard use of antibiotics is common this season. “Sometimes, symptoms are driven by dust exposure or viral infections and are not bacteria-led. So, antibiotics do not work. But because there is an overlap, people rely on a quick fix of tablets, which risks causing resistance,” says Dr Mathew.
