Price strain: US retail sales cool in September; businesses face higher input costs; consumer resilience tested

Price strain: US retail sales cool in September; businesses face higher input costs; consumer resilience tested

US retail sales grew slower than expected in September as consumers grappled with persistently higher prices and companies faced rising input costs, according to government data released on Tuesday.Retail sales rose 0.2% month-on-month, the Commerce Department said, easing from 0.6% in August and falling short of analyst estimates. The moderation in spending comes at a time when households are feeling the pinch of elevated prices, while businesses continue to pass on higher costs.A separate Labor Department report showed producer prices rose 0.3% in September, in line with expectations. But the increase was driven largely by a 0.9% jump in goods prices, highlighting the steeper cost pressures across energy and food categories. As President Donald Trump’s tariffs ripple through the economy, analysts say attention remains on how consumers — the backbone of the world’s largest economy — will absorb higher price levels. Several companies have already flagged a rise in input costs linked to the new duties. The administration last week widened tariff exemptions for select agricultural products to offer relief amid voter concerns over living costs. Both data releases were delayed due to the record 43-day government shutdown between October and mid-November, which halted the compilation of multiple economic indicators including inflation and jobs numbers. As a result, full reports for October were cancelled and remaining figures will now be incorporated into the November update.Commerce Department data showed September retail sales were up 4.3% year-on-year. Among categories, sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers declined, while food and beverage store sales softened. Clothing, hobby and electronics retailers also posted negative readings. In the producer price index, the rise in goods prices — up 0.9% — was fuelled primarily by higher energy and food costs.

Operation Sindoor: 19 CISF personnel honoured; receive coveted 'DG's disk'

NEW DELHI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Tuesday honoured 19 of its personnel for having displayed “exemplary courage and composure” in the face of heavy shelling and firing from Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, to keep critical national assets along the Indo-Pakistan border as well as residents of the surrounding townships, from harm.CISF director general Praveer Ranjan conferred the coveted ‘DG’s Disc’ on the 19 CISF personnel in recognition of “their pivotal role in safeguarding the Uri hydro-electric power projects (UHEB I and II) in Jammu & Kashmir during a critical phase of cross-border hostilities in May 2025”. The Uri hydropower installation, located barely 8-10 kms from the line of control (LoC), is protected by CISF, putting its personnel at the forefront of sudden escalation of hostilities with the neighbour.

‘Objective Is To Destroy The Enemy’: Op Sindoor Echoes As Indian Army Vows Stronger Response to Pak

Operation Sindoor was launched by the armed forces during the intervening night of May 6-7 this year, to demolish terrorist bases in Pakistan in the wake of killing of 26 civilians by terrorists in Pahalgam. The Pakistan Army hit back with indiscriminate shelling on Indian military facilities and civilian settlements along the border, endangering vital infrastructure including the Uri hydro-power projects.“Despite heavy enemy fire and severe risk to their own lives, CISF teams led by Commandant Ravi Yadav and supported by deputy commandant Manohar Singh and assistant commandant Subash Kumar, swiftly initiated protective measures to shield the installations and the surrounding townships. They carried out real-time analysis of incoming shell trajectories, identified safe zones and organised the relocation of residents to bunker shelters,” CISF said in a statement.CISF personnel undertook door-to-door evacuation of around 250 civilians — including women, children, NHPC staff and their families — in the shelling-hit areas. Even as rounds landed dangerously close to the premises, the personnel continued to reinforce bunkers, maintain communication lines through POLNET and satellite systems, and provided emergency assistance.CISF troops also neutralised hostile drones targeting the installations and secured armoury stockpiles by swiftly redistributing weapons to prevent potential destruction. “Throughout the crisis, the integrity of critical national assets remained intact,” said a CISF spokesperson.CISF DG on Tuesday said the force personnel had “upheld the highest traditions of the force, displaying rare courage under fire and unwavering commitment to national security”.

Actress Celina Jaitly has been in the news lately for filing a plea to the Delhi High Court to ask for help for her brother Major Vikrant Jaitley who has been detained in the United Arab Emirates for 14 months. Meanwhile now, in a shocking turn of events, the actress has taken a legal action against her husband, Austrian hotelier and businessman Peter Haag and accused him of domestic violence. Approaching the court under the Domestic Violence Act, she has accused Haag of cruelty, manipulation, and physical abuse. Following her application, a Mumbai court has issued an official notice to Haag. More information on the allegations and the dates of upcoming hearings is still awaited.

Celina Jaitly Recalls Her Brother’s Final Call, Emotional Plea For His Return!

Times Of India reports that the plea states that the 47-year-old mother of three “has been subjected to continuous acts of domestic violence at his hands.”Celina is seeking monthly maintenance of Rs 10 lakh and Rs 50 crore in compensation. It also alleges that Peter has “completely blocked her access to the children, who are currently in his custody in Austria,” and requests a custody order allowing her “unhindered virtual and telephonic access to the children.”According to the detailed application, the couple’s marriage was registered on September 18, 2010, and they have three children. Celina claims her husband gradually took control of her professional and financial life. As the application states, “After marriage, the complainant worked intermittently till she had children, after which the respondent (husband) prohibited her from working on various pretexts and robbed her of her financial independence and dignity.” The plea, filed on November 21, 2025, says Celina “is an aggrieved person as defined under Section 2(a) of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.”The filing describes Peter as “a narcissistic, self-absorbed individual who demonstrates no empathy for the wife or the three children,” adding that his behaviour is “exacerbated by his short temper and alcoholic tendencies.” It further alleges financial misconduct, stating: “He has systematically decimated the persona of the complainant and has calculatedly hoodwinked her into giving him control of her assets and finances.” It also claims he “took advantage of her by pressurising her to transfer ownership of her residence in Mumbai to his name while she was undergoing severe depression after the death of her newborn child and both parents within a few months of each other.”The complaint says the “severe emotional, physical, verbal and financial abuse” eventually became so unbearable “that she was forced to flee the parties’ home in Austria in the middle of the night and return to India, leaving behind her three children.”It also alleges that Peter regularly used racist and insulting language, calling her his “maidservant” and saying she “looked like his maid” or that “people would mistake her for the help.” According to the plea, this “constant humiliation caused her immense mental distress and a gradual breakdown of her self-esteem.”Also Read: When Celina Jaitly revealed mom’s advice on finding Mr Right: ‘The wrong one will find you in peace and leave you in pieces…’ Apart from that, a separate civil suit is pending in the Bombay City Civil Court regarding the cancellation of a gift deed dated January 14, 2019, through which the shared home was transferred to Peter. The case is currently awaiting final hearing and disposal.Celina and Haag married in Austria in 2011, and the two became parents to twin boys in March 2012. Their family expanded again in 2017 with the arrival of another set of twins, though tragedy struck when one of the infants passed away due to a hypoplastic heart condition.Known for films such as ‘No Entry’, ‘Golmaal Returns’, ‘Thank You’, ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’ and ‘Money Hai Toh Honey Hai’, Celina has largely stayed out of the public spotlight in recent years, appearing in the news primarily during significant personal developments. Her brother was associated with the MATITI Group, a company involved in consultancy, trading, and risk management. Celina has alleged that the Ministry of External Affairs has been unable to provide her family with even basic details about his “condition, legal status, or well-being” since his reported detention in September 2024. Acting on her plea, the Delhi court directed authorities to ensure the family can contact him and facilitate communication between him, Celina, and his wife.

Anil Kumble criticises senior batters for India’s struggles in Tests at home

Former India skipper Anil Kumble has strongly criticized the instability in India’s Test batting lineup, attributing recent disappointing performances against South Africa to the retirements and absences of key batters like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Cheteshwar Pujara. Kumble emphasized that frequent changes in the top order and middle order have unsettled the team, impacting their confidence and ability to build innings steadily at home.

Anil Kumble points to player absence after India’s dismal batting performances

Speaking to JioHotstar, Kumble revealed that over the last few years, the Indian Test top order has undergone too many alterations with four of the five main batters either retired, dropped, or unavailable. These include the retirements of Kohli, Rohit, and Pujara, along with Ajinkya Rahane being out of the squad. Additionally, captain and key batter Shubman Gill has missed matches due to a neck injury.

“The other aspect of also, you know, I want to bring this point about India’s batting. Over the last three or four years, you have seen four batters in the top five either retire or not be picked. You know, if it is, you know, Virat Kohli is retired, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, then you have, of course… Rahane. So four out of five, plus Shubman Gill isn’t in this lineup,” Kumble said.

Kumble highlighted how this constant chopping and changing disrupts the rhythm of players who require a stable run to settle into international cricket. He stressed that young batters need support across six to eight Tests to find their form, rather than facing relentless pressure and frequent exclusion from the lineup.

According to Kumble, this instability has been largely responsible for India’s poor batting efforts and failures to negotiate tough spells from bowlers like South Africa’s Marco Jansen, who exploited India’s lack of patience and application.

Gautam Gambhir blames batters’ temperament and defends pitch after Kolkata Test

Following India’s 30-run loss to South Africa in the first Test in Kolkata, head coach Gautam Gambhir rejected complaints about the pitch and instead openly criticized the Indian batters’s temperament. He noted that the total India posted in the second innings of 93 was very much chaseable, and attributed the collapse to poor mental strength and inability to build partnerships. Gambhir’s stance contrasts with some viewers’ concerns about the playing conditions, as he asserted the pitch was fair and that more application was required by the batters to weather the challenges. This aligns with the observations made by Kumble on the need for greater patience and grit in the batting approach. Both experts highlighted the collective failure of the Indian batting order under pressure, underscoring how the lack of continuity in selection seems to compound the problem.

These remarks come as India is on the verge of losing yet another home Test series against South Africa, raising questions about the direction of team selection and player development. The absence of experienced players combined with an inconsistent lineup has clearly led to a fragile batting framework that struggles to withstand quality bowling attacks in crucial moments.

‘Delete central govt’: Mamata attacks EC, BJP over SIR; will back survey on one condition | India News

'Delete central govt': Mamata attacks EC, BJP over SIR; will back survey on one condition

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she “loves Bangladesh as a country, because their language is same,” before training guns at the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, warning that the exercise must not be rushed ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.Addressing an anti-SIR rally in Bongaon, the chief minister told the crowd, “If your name gets deleted, the central government should also be deleted.” Referring to claims that the aim of the SIR is to remove Bangladeshi nationals from the voter list, she asked why the exercise was being conducted in several BJP-ruled states as well and questioned the purpose behind the revision.“I love Bangladesh as a country, because our language is the same. I am from Birbhum, but one day they will call me Bangladeshi. PM Modi got votes in 2024 as per the same list. If your name gets deleted, the central government should also be deleted. Why conducting SIR in such a hurry?” she said.“Till I am here, I will not allow them to throw you out. Nobody can throw you out. If Bangladeshi is a problem, then why are you conducting SIR in Madhya Pradesh and UP?” she asked. She asserted that she has no fear of the ruling party, declaring, “BJP cannot fight and defeat me politically,” and accused the Centre of using the SIR exercise to target voters.Further indicating conditional support for the revision, Banerjee said, “If SIR is conducted over two-three years, we will support the exercise with every possible resource.” The chief minister accused the Election Commission of losing its neutrality, stating that the “EC is no longer an impartial body, it has turned into a ‘BJP Commission’.” She claimed that people would realise the “disaster” caused by the EC and BJP once the draft voter list is published after the SIR. “Does conducting SIR in BJP-ruled states imply the Centre accepts ‘ghuspaithiyas’ exist there?” she asked. These remarks come as the Election Commission has begun the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision across 12 states and Union Territories. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 7, 2026. The first phase was carried out in Bihar before its Assembly elections. The current phase covers Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
