Markets reforms: Govt to table Securities Markets Code Bill in Winter session; unified law to merge Sebi, Depositories & trading Acts

Markets reforms: Govt to table Securities Markets Code Bill in Winter session; unified law to merge Sebi, Depositories & trading Acts

The government has listed the Securities Markets Code Bill 2025 for introduction in the Winter session of Parliament starting December 1, according to a Lok Sabha bulletin. The unified legislation is aimed at boosting ease of doing business and reducing regulatory friction across India’s financial markets. The Bill proposes merging key securities laws, including the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992, the Depositories Act, 1996, and the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956, into a single code. The unified framework was first announced in the Union Budget 2021-22, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed consolidating multiple laws governing securities markets — including the Government Securities Act, 2007 — into a rationalised code. Experts said the move could reduce compliance costs and minimise overlaps between rules enacted by Sebi, depositories and the central government. Bringing the Government Securities Act within a unified code could also strengthen credibility of sovereign borrowing and help channel more foreign capital, they noted.

Cricket Australia CEO denies Usman Khawaja’s pre-Ashes golf session as reason for injury | Cricket News

Cricket Australia CEO denies Usman Khawaja's pre-Ashes golf session as reason for injury

Australia’s opening Test of the Ashes produced an unusual subplot around senior batter Usman Khawaja, whose back spasms on day one triggered a reshuffle that carried into the second innings — and later prompted clarification from Cricket Australia. Khawaja, 38, spent a lengthy period off the field during England’s first innings on day one, leaving him short of the minimum on-field time required under ICC rules to open Australia’s reply. Despite returning shortly before England were bowled out, the window was too small for him to regain eligibility. That forced Marnus Labuschagne to open with debutant Jake Weatherald, while stand-in captain Steve Smith walked in at No. 3. Weatherald lasted only two balls, and Khawaja — still ineligible — remained in the dressing room as Australia slipped early. He finally came in at No. 4 after Labuschagne’s dismissal but managed only two runs before falling. The situation placed scrutiny on Khawaja’s preparation after images of him playing golf in the lead-up to the Test circulated online. Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg rejected any link between that session and the spasms. “It (playing golf) has held him in good stead over the last couple of years. It’s not uncommon for a lot of them to play golf a day prior,” Greenberg told SEN Radio. “Did that correlate to any of the issues? I personally don’t think so. Usman’s a very seasoned campaigner… that is drawing a long bow.” Greenberg added that the players were trusted to manage their own routines, saying, “The individual performance inside a team environment, and then ultimately you’re held accountable for your performance.”

Poll

Should players like Khawaja be criticized for recreational activities before a match?

By day two, Khawaja’s back had eased enough for him to field without trouble. But he did not open again as Australia chased 205 for victory. Instead, Travis Head took the role and produced a defining innings, smashing 123 off 83 balls to secure an eight-wicket win. With Smith and Labuschagne finishing the chase unbeaten, Khawaja did not bat in the second innings at all, leaving his position and preparation a talking point as Australia move deeper into the five-match series.

Ambernath: BJP & Sena poll nominees corralled in hotels

Ambernath: Political parties corralling MPs and MLAs after election results in a bid to check defections has been a norm in Indian politics for the past few decades. In Maharashtra, though, the BJP and Shiv Sena on Friday corralled their candidates in hotels in Mumbai and Thane district well before an election, just to ensure they did not withdraw their nominations on the last day to enable a rival from the other party to go through. The election too, is a municipal one, and not even of a corporation like the cash-rich BMC, but of the municipal council in Ambernath.Sources said that fearing ‘poaching’ and offers of inducements, BJP from Wednesday evening onwards shifted some of its poll candidates to hotels in Dombivli and Mumbai. The Dy CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, on the other hand, took some of its candidates in a hotel in Thane on Thursday.Once the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended on Friday evening, both parties brought their respective nominees back to Ambernath.Though allies at the state level, BJP and Sena are fighting the Ambernath election independently and the battle has been fierce with heat and dust raised over defections of functionaries engineered allegedly by both sides. This year’s civic election is considered more critical as the council president will be directly elected by voters, and victory depends on securing strong support across all 59 wards. With BJP already facing a setback after nomination papers of five of its candidates were rejected during scrutiny, the party reportedly did not want to take any chances. Analysts said this is the first time in the region’s history of civic polls that candidates have been lodged in hotels to prevent form withdrawal.

Matt Henry’s four-wicket haul powers New Zealand to a dominant series whitewash over West Indies in the 3rd ODI

In the 3rd ODI of the West Indies tour of New Zealand held at Hamilton on November 22, 2025, New Zealand secured a commanding series whitewash against the West Indies. The match, played under lights at Seddon Park, saw the West Indies batting first and being restricted to a modest total of 161 runs, thanks mainly to an exceptional bowling performance by New Zealand pacer Matt Henry. New Zealand comfortably chased down the target with 4 wickets in hand and 117 balls to spare, completing a dominant 3-0 series victory over the visitors.

Matt Henry leads the charge with four wickets against West Indies on Day 3

Henry was the standout performer with the ball in the 3rd ODI, delivering a clinical spell of fast bowling that dismantled the fragile West Indies batting lineup. He bowled 9.2 overs, conceding only 43 runs while taking 4 crucial wickets. His wickets included key top and middle-order batters such as Ackeem Auguste, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, and the last man Jayden Seales. Henry’s accurate line and length, combined with perfect use of swing and pace, allowed him to claim his 13th four-wicket haul in ODIs, underscoring his status as one of New Zealand’s premier pace bowlers.

The West Indies batting never settled; the top order fell quickly under pressure from Henry and his pace bowling partners. Despite some resistance from Chase who scored 38 off 51 balls, the innings never gained momentum, and the team was bowled out within 36.2 overs. Alongside Henry’s four wickets, Mitchell Santner and Jacob Duffy took two wickets each, maintaining relentless pressure on the West Indies batters.

Dominant series whitewash by New Zealand

With the target set at 162 runs for victory, New Zealand’s chase was composed and effective. Although the team lost early wickets, Mark Chapman led the charge with a well-crafted 64 runs off 63 balls. Michael Bracewell also contributed an unbeaten 40 runs as New Zealand reached the target comfortably in 30.3 overs.

The victory sealed a dominant 3-0 series whitewash over West Indies, confirming New Zealand’s superiority in all departments – batting, bowling, and fielding. The series highlighted New Zealand’s home dominance and their ability to exploit familiar conditions at Hamilton. It also emphasized the ongoing struggles of the West Indies team to adapt to New Zealand’s pace-friendly pitches.
