NEW DELHI: For car manufacturers, obtaining a five-star safety rating will become tougher under the next phase of Bharat NCAP, which will be rolled out from October 2027. Under BNCAP 2.0, cars will need to undergo five crash tests, compared with the current three. The new regime will add full frontal and rear crash tests to the existing offset (frontal), side, and side-pole impact tests.Cars will be evaluated on five broad parameters — safe driving, accident avoidance, crash protection, vulnerable road-user protection, and post-crash safety of occupants. This means vehicles equipped with advanced safety features such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and electronic stability control (ESC), which help reduce the chances of a crash, will receive higher ratings. The assessment will also factor in features such as drowsiness detection, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision alerts.The road transport ministry published the draft protocol for star ratings — Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) Code 197 — on Thursday and has invited feedback from stakeholders. “This will bring a paradigm shift in car-safety ratings and will be superior to many global standards. The main focus of NCAPs worldwide is to ensure that cars do not become death traps for occupants,” said a private-sector expert involved in preparing the new protocol.The first phase of BNCAP is valid until September 2027.The new assessment protocol will also evaluate female occupant safety, going beyond regulatory requirements, and the safety of belted minor occupants, specifically assessing 6- and 10-year-old children. It proposes the use of advanced crash-test dummies during side-impact and pole-impact tests for better analysis of occupant protection.The proposed standard also includes post-crash safety requirements for both conventional and electric vehicles, which are crucial for safe evacuation of occupants. These include mandatory assessments of energy management for fire and electrical hazards and occupant extrication. Optional assessments will include multi-collision braking (MCB), SOS or e-call systems, and hazard-warning light functions.The test protocol will also assess features aimed at minimising the impact on pedestrians and other vulnerable road users in the event of a crash.

Tata Power has signed commercial agreements with Druk Green Power Corporation to acquire a 40 per cent stake in a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project in Bhutan, the company said on Friday. The equity commitment is valued at approximately Rs 1,572 crore and will be infused in phases, PTI reported.Set up at a total project cost of Rs 13,100 crore, Dorjilung will be Bhutan’s second-largest hydropower project and the biggest public-private partnership (PPP) hydropower venture undertaken in the country. Developed on the Kurichhu River in Mongar, the run-of-the-river project comprises six generating units of 187.5 MW each and includes six-hour pondage for peaking supply.According to Tata Power, 80 per cent of the power generated will be supplied to India, contributing to cross-border clean energy flows backed by World Bank support. The project is scheduled for commissioning in September 2031 and will become an associate company of Tata Power upon completion.The commercial agreements were signed in Thimphu by Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha and Druk Green Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin in the presence of Bhutan PM Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay, PTI reported.Sinha said the project is designed to support Bhutan’s domestic energy demand while enabling surplus clean power exports to India. “This partnership further strengthens our hydropower portfolio and positions the Indo-Bhutan energy corridor as a leading model for mutually beneficial, cross-border green energy cooperation,” he said.
Mumbai: Police arrested a 33-year-old woman staffer of a finance and investment company who, along with her colleague, defrauded a senior resident of Cumballa Hills and his family members of around Rs 1 crore by illegally accessing their demat accounts and executing unauthorised share trades. Azad Maidan Police on Friday arrested Pushpa Bind, a resident of Gujarat, and her accomplice Anil Prashad Kumbhar (32) from Jaipur.According to the complaint, on Oct 4, the accused approached the complainant at his office saying they would reopen the demat account of the complainant’s son.The complainant was told that an OTP would be generated to facilitate reopening of the account. As instructed, he provided photocopies of his son’s Aadhaar and PAN cards. The process did not go through and four days later, the complainant received an SMS from the National Stock Exchange informing him of a trading turnover of around Rs 25 lakh from his account.He later found out that all shares in four family trading accounts — valued at around Rs 1.20 crore — had been sold without consent, and in their place, non-traded or low-value shares were purchased. When the complainant later visited the investment firm in Malad he was told that similar fraudulent activities had occurred in other customers’ accounts. “Both the arrested accused are habitual offenders with similar cheating cases registered against them at Santacruz police, West Cyber police and Vanrai police,” said a police officer.
NEW DELHI: Wing Commander Namnash Syal was identified as the pilot of the ill-fated Tejas fighter jet that crashed during the Dubai Airshow on Friday, news agency ANI reported.Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu paid tribute to the officer, who hailed from Kangra district. In a message on X, he wrote: “The news of the demise of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district’s brave son Naman Syal ji in the Tejas aircraft accident at the Dubai Air Show is extremely heartbreaking and soul-shattering. The nation has lost a courageous, dutiful, and valiant pilot.”The single-engine aircraft went down around 2:10pm local time after abruptly losing altitude mid-manoeuvre, before crashing in a fireball near the Al Maktoum International Airport. Spectators watched in shock as black smoke rose over the airfield.The IAF said a court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident, adding that it “deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family.” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and senior military leaders also expressed condolences.
On the third day of the legal battle over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s will, the Delhi High Court heard a detailed rebuttal from Priya Kapur’s legal team regarding allegations made by Karisma Kapoor’s side. For those not in the know, Karisma’s children and Sunjay Kapur’s widowed wife are in the midst of a legal battle for the inheritence of his Rs 30,000 crore estate. Karisma’s children filed a plea alleging that Priya has forged his will. In the last hearing, Karisma’s daughter alleged that two months of her fees were unpaid. This led to the court to remind both the parties to avoid melodrama. However, Priya’s lawyer, Sheyl Trehan, presented extensive documentation to counter the earlier claim that the children’s university fees had not been cleared. She produced a Rs 95-lakh-per-semester receipt, confirming the payment was already made, and clarified that the next instalment for the second semester is only due in December.
This directly contradicted the previous hearing, during which the lawyer representing Karisma’s daughter alleged that two months of fees were unpaid. Once the issue of fees was addressed, the court turned to the core issue, the authenticity of Sunjay’s will, which Karisma and the children are disputing. The defence then walked the court through the entire sequence of how the will came into being.They stated that the first draft was created on the laptop of Nitin Sharma, the lawyer responsible for preparing the document. His affidavit confirmed this, supported by screenshots, file histories and metadata. Sharma even brought his laptop to court and invited the bench to verify everything directly.The defence then broke down the timeline of edits: Sunjay reviewed the draft on March 10, 2025, sent his feedback over the next few days, and the final version was completed on March 17, 2025. This timestamp aligned perfectly with the plaintiffs’ own admission that Sunjay had reached Delhi on the same day. Travel records submitted in court matched the metadata, creating a seamless digital and physical chronology.The chain of custody of the document was also laid out in full, from the creation of the Word file to its conversion into a signed PDF, from the email trail between Sharma and accountant Dinesh Agarwal to the renaming, forwarding, and eventual moment when Sunjay viewed the will at 5.01 pm on the Family Office WhatsApp group. All these steps were supported by logs, screenshots and sworn statements.The plaintiffs’ new claim — that the signature on the will might not be genuine — was firmly refuted. The defence highlighted that this very signature had been used by Karisma and the children to obtain benefits worth Rs 2,000 crore from the RK Family Trust. They had never questioned its authenticity until the dispute over the will, which pertains only to Sunjay’s personal remaining assets, including his 6.5% stake in AIPL and certain international properties.Both attesting witnesses, Sharma and Agarwal, reaffirmed in their affidavits that the signature was authentic and properly witnessed. Emails presented in court also showed that after Sunjay’s death, Agarwal immediately reached out to the executor. The executor received the original will on June 24, 2025 — a handover that the plaintiffs themselves acknowledged in writing. For several weeks after Sunjay passed away, the plaintiffs did not request the will, focusing instead on trust papers, weakening their claim that it had been concealed.Another argument, that the will was suspicious because it was not registered, was dismissed as well. The defence clarified that registration of a will is not compulsory under Indian law, and Delhi does not require probate. Since much of Sunjay’s immovable property is located abroad, probate would not have been needed regardless. Relevant case law was submitted to support these points.Before the hearing concluded, the defence underscored Priya Kapur’s conduct since Sunjay Kapur’s passing, pointing out that she had spent over Rs 1 crore on the children’s education, healthcare and overall welfare, entirely in accordance with the mandates of the trust and the will. Meanwhile, senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for Priya, told the court that it is a “healthy tradition” for a husband to leave his assets to his wife. Referring to Sunjay’s father’s will, he said, “There is nothing suspicious about a husband giving everything in his assets to his wife. As is the case in my father-in-law’s will, where everything was given to his wife. It is a healthy tradition which perhaps has been maintained.”The matter will continue with the next round of arguments on November 21.
