“I have come to know from media reports that I have been named a recipient of the “Veer Savarkar Award,” which is to be presented today in Delhi. I only learned about this announcement yesterday in Kerala, where I had gone to vote in the local self-government elections. There in Thiruvananthapuram, responding to media queries, I had clarified that I was neither aware of, nor had accepted, such an award and it was irresponsible on the part of the organisers to announce my name without my having agreed to receive it,” the Thiruvananthapuram MP said in a post on X.“Despite that, today in Delhi, some media outlets continue to ask the same question. Therefore, I am issuing this statement to clarify the matter unequivocally. In the absence of clarifications about the nature of the award, the organization presenting it or any other contextual details, the question of my attending the event today or accepting the award does not arise,” he added. After Tharoor’s remarks, Aji Krishnan, secretary of the HRDS India said that the Congress MP had been notified about it well ahead of time, PTI reported citing a TV channel. He added that HRDS India representatives and the jury chair had visited Tharoor at his home to extend the invitation, during which the MP requested a list of the other awardees.Kerala law minister P Rajeev had said that the choice to accept or decline the award rested entirely with Tharoor.

Haj pilgrims welcome restoration of quota for private tour operators | Mumbai News

Haj pilgrims welcome restoration of quota for private tour operators

MUMBAI: Pilgrims intending to perform Haj 2026 through Haj Group Organisations (HGOs) and Private Tour Operators (PTOs) have welcomed the restoration of Haj quota (around 52000) through PTOs.Last year, only 10,000 pilgrims under the PTOs quota could perform Haj due to technical glitches in booking their accomodation. To avoid last minute difficulties, the Haj division of ministry of minority affairs, through its recent advisory, has asked prospective pilgrims to do booking with the PTOs at the earliest. Out of 1,75000 Indian quota, 52000 will travel through PTOs whole the rest will use services of the Haj Committee of India.Khalid Kherada of Al Khalid Tours and Travels, a leading Haj and Umrah travel agency, said that the pilgrims should book their seats by January 15, 2026 to avoid last minute rush. “This is in the interest of pilgrims since the last date for finalising contract for housing and other services, according to Saudi authorities, is February 1,2026. We have to make a lot of logistical arrangements on the number of pilgrims we book as per the quota alloted to us,” said Kherada.“I was among those who couldn’t go despite having booked seats with a PTI. I hope I will travel hor Haj this year without any hurdle,” said city resident Qamrul Hoda. These contractual agreements are done to ensure accommodation, transport and other logistical services for the pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.People who are aware of the Haj operations are happy that the quota for the pilgrims have been restored. ” This is good news. The main issue facing the pilgrims in Saudi Arabia is how far they are accommodated from the Haram Sharief (Kaaba and holy mosques) precinct in Mecca. They should do the booking at the earliest,” said Nasir Jamal, Haj Committee of India’s former Vice-Chairman.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai hints at building data centres in space; Elon Musk replies

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently hinted at building data centres in space. In an interview with Fox News, Pichai said that the company is working on quantum computing, adding “in that spirit, one of our moon shots is to, how do we one day have data centers in space so that we can better harness the energy from the sun”. Sundar Pichai’s video from the interview was shared by X (formerly Twitter) user – Bourbon Capital in an online post. It caught the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk who replied to the post with a single word. “Interesting”, Musk wrote. “At Google, we are always proud of taking moon shots,” Pichai said, adding “… Waymo … has been over a decade in the making.” “We’re working on quantum computing, in that spirit, one of our moon shots is to, how do we one day have data centers in space so that we can better harness the energy from the sun,” he continued.Pichai further said that the company wants to “put these data centers in space closer to the sun”, and will take “first step in 2027”. “We’ll send tiny racks of machines and have them in satellites, test them out, and then start scaling from there. But there’s no doubt to me that a decade or so away will be viewing it as a more normal way to build data centers,” Sundar Pichai said in the interview.Notably, this echoes Musk’s November 2025 announcements that SpaceX will pioneer orbital data centers using next-gen Starlink satellites, positioning them as the lowest-cost AI compute option within five years.

Blair Tickner, Michael Rae shine as New Zealand seize command after dramatic West Indies collapse on Day 1 of second Test

New Zealand capped off a dominant opening day in the second Test at Basin Reserve, bowling out West Indies for a modest 205 before reaching a steady 24/0 at stumps. Trailing by 181 runs, the hosts firmly hold the advantage after a disciplined collective display with the ball, headlined by Blair Tickner and debutant Michael Rae.

Early Resistance from West Indies

Opting to bowl first under overcast Wellington skies, New Zealand initially found the West Indies top order resolute. While movement off the surface was limited in the first session, John Campbell’s 44 and Shai Hope’s fluent 48 ensured the visitors negotiated the early threat with composure. Their partnerships helped WI maintain stability heading into the second session, where the hosts began to claw their way back into the contest.

Blair Tickner destroys West Indies with bowling brilliance

As the pitch quickened after lunch, New Zealand’s pace brigade tightened the screws. Short-pitched bowling proved effective, unsettling the West Indies middle order. Blair Tickner, relentless with his lines and aggressive lengths, claimed 4/32, dismissing four of the top five batters at crucial moments. His ability to extract bounce and hurry batters forced errors that shifted the momentum significantly in New Zealand’s favour.

On debut, Michael Rae overcame initial nerves to deliver a composed and disciplined spell. His 3/67 included important middle-order wickets that prevented the visitors from rebuilding. Jacob Duffy and Glenn Phillips added a wicket each, contributing to a complete bowling performance.

Six wickets for 29: WI collapse in the final session

What had been a fairly balanced contest through two sessions turned heavily in New Zealand’s favour after tea. The West Indies innings unraveled dramatically, losing their final six wickets for just 29 runs. The lower order struggled against the sharp rise in pace and sustained hostility, leaving WI well short of a competitive first-innings total.

However, New Zealand’s near-perfect day was marred by a concerning moment late in the innings. Tickner suffered a suspected dislocated left shoulder while making a full-length diving effort near the boundary rope to stop a flick from Tevon Imlach. He stayed down immediately, prompting urgent calls for help. Medical staff from both the New Zealand camp and the venue attended to him before he was stretchered off—sitting upright—to applause from the Basin Reserve crowd. He was later transported to a hospital by ambulance. Updates on his availability for the remainder of the Test are expected before the start of Day 2.

In the brief period before stumps, openers navigated the remaining overs safely, taking the hosts to 24 without loss. With a deep batting unit and favourable conditions forecasted, New Zealand are well-placed to build a substantial first-innings lead on Day 2.

‘How can flight tickets cost Rs 35-39k?’ Delhi HC pulls up Centre; asks what steps were taken during IndiGo chaos | India News

'How can flight tickets cost Rs 35-39k?' Delhi HC pulls up Centre; asks what steps were taken during IndiGo chaos

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Wednesday pulled up the Centre over the chaos faced by air travellers amid disruptions at IndiGo, questioning why the government failed to prevent airfares from soaring to Rs 35,000–Rs 39,000 and what immediate measures were taken to assist stranded passengers. “Why did such a situation even precipitate? What steps were taken to assist passengers?” it asked.

As IndiGo Spirals Into Crisis, PM Modi Stresses Rules Must Ease Citizens’ Lives, Not Burden Them

“Question also is, if there was a crisis how can other airlines be permitted to take advantage? How can it go to 35-39k? How could other airlines start charging? How can it happen?” Live Law quoted Justice Gedela saying. The additional solicitor general told the court that a show-cause notice had already been served to the airline, which responded with a “profuse apology.” He further noted that implementation of the FDTL scheme had been delayed since 2024 due to the carrier’s repeated pleas for extensions and its continued assurances before the single-judge bench. The bench asked the government to explain the arrangements made to manage stranded travellers and prevent harassment at airports. “If they failed, what action did you take? You allowed the situation to reach this point,” it said. The IndiGo crisis drew the attention of both the Delhi high court and the Supreme Court against the backdrop of mounting frustration among air travellers after airlines cancelled hundreds of flights nationwide, triggering widespread disruption. The HC agreed to hear a plea on the matter after SC acknowledged the gravity of the situation, calling it a “serious matter,” even as it declined an urgent hearing. “It is a serious matter. Lakhs of people are stranded at the airports. We know that the government of India has taken timely action and cognisance of the issue,” CJI Surya Kant had said. IndiGo has come under sharp criticism from both the central government and travellers after it scrapped hundreds of flights since December 2, attributing the large-scale disruptions to changes in pilots’ flight duty and rest regulations. The cancellations have caused massive inconvenience, leaving lakhs of passengers stranded at airports nationwide.

Historic moment as Diwali makes it to Unesco list: Deepavali joins Yoga, Durga Puja among intangible cultural heritage — full list

NEW DELHI: In a landmark recognition, Deepavali has been added to Unesco’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, becoming the 16th Indian tradition to earn the honour, joining the ranks of Yoga and Durga Puja.“A historic day for India. Deepavali has been officially inscribed on the Unesco List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During the tenure of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India’s cultural heritage is receiving unprecedented global recognition and this milestone strengthens that journey. This honour celebrates the universal message of our festival of lights: hope over despair, harmony over division, and light for all. My gratitude to Unesco and to every custodian of our timeless traditions,” said culture and tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. In the same round of additions, Unesco also inscribed “Georgian wheat culture: traditions and rituals” from Georgia, recognising the nation’s centuries-old agricultural heritage. The inscription of Deepavali on Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list comes as part of a significant global review underway in New Delhi, where the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage is being held from December 8 to 13 at the historic Red Fort. This marks the first time India has hosted the prestigious Unesco panel, which is tasked with evaluating cultural practices, traditions, and expressions from around the world for international recognition and protection. During the nearly week-long session, the committee is examining 67 nominations submitted by 79 countries, including India’s entry of the Deepavali festival. The assessments form part of Unesco’s larger mandate to safeguard cultural traditions that hold historical, artistic, or social value, ensuring their continuity for future generations. The global diversity of this year’s submissions — ranging from festivals and rituals to agricultural and craft traditions — underscores the expanding scope of the intangible heritage programme and the growing international interest in preserving living cultural practices.

‘Dhurandhar’ star Akshaye Khanna ‘would carry a small oxygen cylinder with him’ while shooting ‘FA9LA’ entry scene, choreographer Vijay Ganguly reveals | Hindi Movie News

Akshaye Khanna’s power-packed entry as Rehman Dakait in ‘Dhurandhar’ has gone viral. Choreographer Vijay Ganguly revealed Akshaye shot the ‘FA9LA’ track in Ladakh while carrying an oxygen cylinder due to low oxygen levels. Despite challenges, he completed the shoot flawlessly. The Aditya Dhar film also stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and R. Madhavan.

Akshaye Khanna has successfully captivated audiences once again with his grand entry as the fierce character, Rehman Dakait, in the spy action-thriller, ‘Dhurandhar’. His commanding presence in the sequence has become a major talking point and a viral sensation across the internet. The excitement was significantly heightened by the use of the electrifying ‘FA9LA’ track accompanying his powerful introduction. Offering a glimpse behind the scenes, choreographer Vijay Ganguly shed light on the rigorous process. Ganguly revealed that filming this high-impact entry sequence came with its significant challenges for Akshaye Khanna.

Vijay Ganguly reveals shooting challenges in Ladakh

The famous ‘FA9LA’ track, created by Bahraini hip-hop artist Flipperachi, has taken over Instagram trends. While filming the song sequence in the high-altitude terrains of Ladakh, Akshaye faced a tough challenge, coping with low oxygen levels. To manage the demanding conditions, he kept an oxygen cylinder close by throughout the shoot. Talking to Mid-Day, Vijay revealed, “Akshaye would carry a small oxygen cylinder with him. When we were shooting this song, his oxygen level had dropped. So, after every shot, he would put the oxygen mask on. He did the sequence unflinchingly, and then went home”.See More: Akshaye Khanna’s Rs 167 crore net worth: Inside ‘Dhurandhar’ actor’s lavish properties and car collection

The creative vision behind the ‘FA9LA’ sequence

Ganguly also opened up about the concept behind the energetic number, explaining the significance of the sequence. The choreographer added that the song is a celebration of Akshaye’s character being crowned as the Sher-E-Baloch. Originally, Khanna was supposed to enter, walk through the dancers, and sit on the throne. Seeing the scene’s mood and the dancers’ performance, he said he would dance a bit when he walked in. None of them knew what he was going to do. Akshaye entered the scene, took it from that point, and spontaneously performed.

Rapid shoot and impressive clarity

Even with the tough shooting conditions, the team managed to wrap up the entire song in just two hours in Ladakh. Vijay credited this swift completion to Akshaye’s sharp professionalism and flawless execution. He further added, “It was the first shot we took that day, and it was perfect. Then we did a close-up, and we were done. Akshaye knows exactly what he has to do in a scene and plays with it.”

The star-studded ensemble

‘Dhurandhar’ brings together a stellar ensemble cast featuring Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna in pivotal roles. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the much-awaited film arrived in cinemas on December 5.
