Unnao rape case: CBI moves Supreme Court against Delhi high court order

File photo: Kuldip Singh Sengar

NEW DELHI: CBI on Friday filed a special leave petition in Supreme Court against Delhi high court’s recent order suspending the sentence of expelled BJP ex-MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. The probe agency has sought an immediate stay on the relief granted to Sengar, arguing against his release pending the final disposal of his appeal against conviction and life sentence. A division bench on HC had in its Tuesday order said that the trial court erred in categorising the former UP MLA as a ‘public servant’ and awarding the maximum punishment for ‘aggravated penetrative sexual assault’ under section 5 of Pocso Act. The bench stated that an MLA did not come under the definition of a ‘public servant’ either under Pocso Act or IPC, and hence Sengar’s offence did not fall within the ambit of Section 5.The trial court had convicted Sengar in Dec 2019 for the rape of a minor in Unnao in 2017, sentencing him to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25 lakh. While the former Unnao MLA moved Delhi high court in Jan 2020 challenging his conviction, in March 2022 he filed a petition seeking the suspension of his sentence.Throughout the proceedings, CBI and the survivor vehemently opposed any form of relief to Sengar, citing the gravity of his crime and the potential threat to the complainant and witnesses. But, the HC bench on Dec 23 granted him bail, subject to certain conditions. The order didn’t ensure immediate freedom for the former lawmaker, who is also serving a 10-year prison term in a case related to the custodial death of the rape survivor’s father.

UP: Hauled up for using AI during exam, girl dies by suicide; father accuses school of abetment

NOIDA: A Class 10 student died by suicide early on Dec 23, allegedly hours after she was pulled up by her teachers and principal at a private Greater Noida West school for using AI on her mobile phone to write her pre-Board exam papers. The girl’s father submitted a police complaint on Thursday seeking an FIR against the school management, the principal and two teachers, accusing them of abetment to suicide and mental harassment. While police are examining allegations before registering an FIR, the principal told TOI that the student, though reprimanded, was not harassed and told that cheating in the board exam could earn her a five-year suspension from writing the test.According to the minor’s father, the 16-year-old allegedly jumped from her eight-floor flat early on Dec 23. He alleged that his daughter was deeply distressed after she was scolded and humiliated by teachers for bringing her phone to the exam hall on Dec 22.In his complaint, the father said he has three daughters, all of whom study at the same school. He alleged that his eldest daughter had “unknowingly” carried her mobile phone to school on the day of the exam. She was caught by the invigilator, who reprimanded her and informed her class teacher. The student was then taken to the principal. The principal called the girl’s parents to the school, and her father arrived shortly afterwards. He alleged that even in his presence, the teachers and principal continued to scold and insult the student aggressively. He also claimed that he was called “careless” by the teachers. The father claimed his daughter was shaken by the incident and that the harsh words used by her teachers had a severe psychological impact. He named the child’s class teacher, Poonam Dubey, another teacher, Taapas, and the school management in his complaint, accusing them of pushing his daughter towards taking an extreme step.He has urged police to register a case under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide), and other relevant provisions. He claimed the incident had left his other two daughters traumatised and fearful of returning to the school. The school has strongly denied the allegations. The principal told TOI over the phone that the student was not harassed and that the school followed standard protocol prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education. “The girl was found with a mobile phone during the pre-board examinations. When the invigilator checked the device, it appeared that she had been using AI to get answers. The phone was confiscated, and she was brought to the examination head, who then brought her to me,” the principal said. She said she had informed the student that using such methods during the CBSE board examinations could lead to a ban of up to five years from appearing in the exams. “That is the rule, and the child was only told about the consequences,” she said. According to the principal, the student’s parents were informed immediately and reached the school within 10 to 15 minutes, as they lived nearby. She said the interaction took place at the reception area and was brief.

Dhruv Shorey equals latest List A record with unbeaten century in VHT

Dhruv Shorey played for Vidarbha in the match against Hyderabad and scored an unbeaten century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This was the fifth century for Dhruv Shorey, which equalled his record for most consecutive centuries in List A cricket.

Currently, several Indian international as well as domestic players are busy playing in the one-day tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The focus has been on many players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant.

However, alongside these players, Rinku Singh, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan and many more batters also gained the spotlight with their splendid innings. Dhurv Shorey, the Vidarbha middle-order batter, also continued his spectacular form.

Dhruv Shorey equalled the List A record for most centuries

Dhurv Shorey continued his stellar run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Coming into play in the 2025-26 VHT season, Shorey played for Vidarbha and scored a hundred in the very first game against Bengal. However, the Bengal batters took away the credit as they chased a massive target.

Dhruv Shorey has equalled the batting record of Tamil Nadu opener Narayan Jagadeesan. Shorey scored his fifth century with a second consecutive hundred in the game against Hyderabad. Coming in at no. 3, he smashed 109 runs off just 77 balls.

Shorey’s run of five hundreds stretches back to the 2024-25 knockouts, where he made a century each in the quarter-final, semi-final and final as well. He was a key batter for Vidarbha and managed to aggregate 494 runs in 8 innings at an average of 70.47.

He has equalled the record alongside Narayan Jagadeesan, who too had scored five consecutive hundreds during the 2022-23 Vijay Hazare Trophy. That also included a massive 277-run innings, which broke the record for the highest individual score in List A cricket.

Shorey’s second VHT hundred this season guides them to a massive total

Dhruv Shorey’s VHT innings began with a 125-ball 136 against Bengal in the opening game of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was flustered in the innings against Hyderabad as well. Coming in to bat in the top order, Shorey contributed to massive partnerships.

After a massive opening partnership between Aman Mokhade and Yash Rathod, Shorey added more runs this time at a quicker rate to take the Vidarbha total to a massive 365 in their 50 overs. He remained unbeaten on 109 off just 77 balls with a strike rate of 141.55.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, was bowled out for just 276 runs, as a result of which Vidarbha earned its first victory by a massive margin of 89 runs.

Consecutive List A hundred record features two Vidarbha batters

Alongside the Indian domestic maestros Narayan Jagadeesan and Dhruv Shorey, many other players have also extended a massive record in List A cricket. The likes of Karun Nair, Devdutt Padikkal, Kumar Sangakkara and Alviro Petersen all had the record of four consecutive List A centuries.

Karun Nair also scored four consecutive hundreds for Vidarbha in the previous Vijay Hazare Trophy season. Kumar Sangakkara, on the other hand, is the only player to have scored four consecutive centuries in One-day international cricket.

India condemns ‘hostility’ against Bangladesh minorities | India News

India condemns ‘hostility’ against Bangladesh minorities

NEW DELHI: The acrimonious exchanges between India and Bangladesh in the past few weeks came to a head on Friday with India slamming Dhaka for “unremitting hostility” against minorities – including Hindus, Christians and Buddhists – in the country at the hands of extremists. Calling it a matter of grave concern, ministry of external affairs (MEA) condemned the recent killing of a Hindu youth in Mymensingh and stressed that the perpetrators of the crime must be brought to justice.Asked about the return of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to Dhaka after 17 years, the Indian govt only said it should be seen in the context of India’s call for efforts to ensure free, fair and inclusive parliamentary polls in Bangladesh.

Red Line From New Delhi: India Calls Out Yunus Govt As Minority Attacks In Bangladesh Escalate

PM Narendra Modi had earlier expressed concerns about the failing health of Tarique’s mother and former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia and offered all possible assistance to her.Tarique returned to Dhaka on Thursday, further energising BNP – which was revived by former PM Sheikh Hasina’s ouster last year – ahead of the Feb 12 parliamentary elections. On the security situation in Bangladesh, the ministry said it rejected the false narrative created in the country. “You would understand that law and order or security situation or the developments that are happening in Bangladesh is the responsibility of the govt of Bangladesh, and to portray a narrative where things go in some other direction is completely false and we reject that,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

India condemns ‘hostility’ against Bangladesh minorities

‘2,900 incidents against minorities have been documented during Yunus government’The official said that more than 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities, including cases of killings, arson, and land grab, have been documented by independent sources during the tenure of the interim govt and these incidents cannot be brushed aside as mere media exaggeration or dismissed as political violence. The interim govt led by chief adviser Muhammad Yunus has repeatedly brushed aside India’s concerns as propaganda by the Indian media.“We are all aware of the recent developments in Bangladesh. We have been closely following them. And, as far as the law and order situation is concerned, I have been apprising you from time to time as to what our position has been or should be and is today. The unremitting hostility against minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists at the hands of extremists, is a matter of grave concern,” said the official.“India wants close and friendly relations with people of Bangladesh which is rooted in Liberation struggle and strengthened through various development and people-to-people initiatives,” he said. BNP had earlier said it wanted balanced ties with India. Indian govt’s response was that it remained committed to the best interests of people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders.

Ashes: After 20 wickets on Day 1, Stuart Broad blasts MCG pitch – ‘There is something really wrong’ | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad was left unhappy with the pitch at the Melbourne Cricket Ground after the first day of the Boxing Day Test. Watching the match, Broad felt the surface was doing far too much for the bowlers and said it was not what a proper Test pitch should offer. Day 1 turned into a bowler’s game, with wickets falling almost every session. England’s Josh Tongue produced a stunning spell, having picked up five wickets for just 45 runs as Australia were bowled out for 152 in their first innings.

Gautam Gambhir’s year as India coach ends like it started – on a chaotic note

However, England could not take full advantage, as Australia hit back strongly and dismissed the visitors for only 110 runs. By the end of the day, a remarkable 20 wickets had fallen, making it one of the most dramatic opening days in recent memory. In fact, it was the first time in 74 years that 20 wickets fell on the opening day of a Test match in Australia. While fans enjoyed the non-stop action, Broad was not convinced the pitch was fair for Test cricket. “The amount of movement that this pitch has shown has indicated to me that there is something really wrong. Test match bowlers do not require this level of movement to bowl effectively in a Test match. Good Test match pitches will have good bounce but not excessive sideways movements,” Broad said on Sen Cricket. Despite the debate around the pitch, it was a dream day for Josh Tongue. The England pacer made history by becoming the first England bowler this century to take a five-wicket haul in a men’s Test match at the MCG. The last time an England bowler achieved the feat at the venue was back in 1998, when Darren Gough and Dean Headley did so. Tongue’s performance was also his best in Test cricket so far. It bettered his previous best figures of 5-66, which he recorded against Ireland at Lord’s in 2023. Not surprisingly, the fast bowler was delighted with his achievement on such a big stage. The day was made even more special by the crowd at the MCG. A total of 94,199 fans packed the stadium on Friday. This broke the previous record of 93,013, set during the 2015 Cricket World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand.

Himachal Pradesh: Doctors launch indefinite strike after colleague sacked over assault; demand immediate reinstatement | India News

Himachal Pradesh: Doctors launch indefinite strike after colleague sacked over assault; demand immediate reinstatement

There’s a video of Raghav Nirula thrashing the patient, but Resident Doctors’ Association says his side of the story hasn’t been considered

SHIMLA/KULLU: The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla — following backing from Himachal Medical Officers Association and RDAs of other medical colleges — announced an indefinite strike from 9.30 am Saturday, demanding immediate reinstatement of Dr Raghav Nirula, who was sacked on the recommendations of an inquiry report for assaulting a patient on December 22.They will be joined by govt doctors in other health facilities across the state. All routine services, OPDs and elective operation theatres will remain closed, but emergency services will continue to function, IGMC RDA announced Friday.CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s promise of a fresh inquiry cut no ice with the doctors, who see Nirula’s sacking as a “mob trial”. There’s a video of Nirula brutally thrashing the patient, who is also seen kicking him while lying in bed, but RDA said Nirula’s side of the story hasn’t been considered, and the termination is unjust.Himachal residents are already facing the brunt of the protest as govt doctors, excluding those on emergency and VIP duties, went on mass casual leave. Long queues were seen at OPD counters of regional and zonal hospitals in Kullu, Dharamshala, Una and Mandi. On Friday morning, representatives of IGMC RDA, HMOA and State Association of Medical and Dental College Teachers met the CM with their demands. RDA president Dr Sohail Sharma told mediapersons that Sukhu listened to them in detail, “considered all available evidence” and promised a fresh inquiry. The association alleged that Nirula received “direct threats to his life” and was warned to “leave the country”. RDA called for the immediate revocation of Nirula’s termination order. The association expressed concern over instances of “mob intimidation” inside the hospital, saying safety of healthcare workers was under threat and services were disrupted. It has demanded registration of FIRs and legal proceedings under BNS.“A fresh inquiry should be conducted to find out the exact circumstances that led to this incident. Moreover, govt should inquire into the threats made against the doctor by the patient’s attendants,” said Dr Satyavrat Vaidya, posted at Regional Hospital, Kullu.Former BJP CM and current LoP in assembly, Jai Ram Thakur, on Friday termed Nirula’s sacking a “harsh” move. “The decision to terminate Dr Raghav seems to have been taken in a hurry. A suspension order with a warning would have sufficed,” he said. RDA has also sought legal action over the vandalism of govt property during the December 22 fracas, and steps to end CCTV and security deficiencies at IGMC-Shimla.Ambulance staff stop work over wagesTo add to patients’ woes, around 1,300 employees of 108 and 102 ambulance services also went on a two-day strike across the state on Friday , demanding minimum wages. They staged protests and stopped work, impacting emergency services across Himachal. Protests were held in Una, Shimla, Kullu, Solan, Nahan, Chamba, Mandi, Dharamshala and Hamirpur as employees raised slogans against the company hired by the health department to run ambulance services. The employees’ union has alleged the firm isn’t giving them the basic salary ordered by various courts, including HP HC.

In a first, standards for incense sticks notified

NEW DELHI: In a first, government notified standards for incense sticks (agarbatti) and has laid down quality norms or Indian Standards, specifying a list of substances prohibited for use in their manufacture. The items include certain insecticidal chemicals such as allethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fipronil, as well as synthetic fragrance intermediates like benzyl cyanide, ethyl acrylate and diphenylamine. Many of these substances are restricted or banned internationally due to their potential impact on human health, indoor air quality and ecological safety. The standard, IS 19412:2025, developed by BIS was released by consumer affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on Consumer Rights Day. Yami Gautam was asked to audition for Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Kaabil’ but her other contemporaries did not: ‘I was more than happy, but why the difference?’ | Hindi Movie News

Yami Gautam is a really happy and proud wife at the moment with Aditya Dhar‘s directorial ‘Dhurandhar’ smashing box office records and gathering accolades. The film has crossed Rs 600 crore at the domestic box office and become the biggest grosser of the year. However, it’s also been a spectacular year for Yami. The actress known for always playing some meaningful characters on screen, be it ”Uri: The Surgical Strike’ and ‘Article 370’ has her own special fan following. However, it has taken a while for the actress to reach this point and she’s had her share of struggle. Yami was a Television actress before she made her Hindi film debut with Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Vicky Donor’. In a recent conversation, Yami spoke about her journey and also recalled facing moments where she felt uncertain about her career. She said during a chat with Humans Of Bombay, “Back then, things were much more challenging,” she said. “There were times when I would think, ‘I don’t think it’s going to work out,’ or ‘Should I go back or hold on a little longer?’ You start wondering, ‘Is this it?’”

Yami Gautam Glowing With Joy As Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ Roars Toward Release

Asked when she felt this way, Yami answered simply: “Multiple times.” “There’s never just one moment,” she explained. “Even after coming into films, even after Vicky Donor, there were moments when I questioned a lot of things. You take people at face value, but later realise there’s often subtext to what they’re saying. Everyone has suggestions and advice, but all I needed was good work.”Looking back at that period of self-doubt, she added, “If I am the same person who did a film like ‘Vicky Donor’, then I must have some potential.”Yami also reflected on the unpredictable nature of casting which sometimes also may seem unfair. “I realised that every film reveals something new, and you’re never ‘good enough’ to get THAT film of your life. So what’s the point of obsessing? Whether you’re cast in a film depends on someone else’s decision, and that decision isn’t always based on your potential, it’s influenced by many other factors.”Expanding on the point, she said, “It could be anything. Not just in the industry but anywhere. Very random reasons, often ones that don’t make sense. But you also can’t force someone to like you enough to cast you. I am happy to screen test.”Recalling one such experience, Yami shared, “I screen tested for ‘Kaabil’ and I was more than happy to do that. I am not saying it was for ‘Kaabil’ but when you’re asked to screen test while another contemporary isn’t, you do wonder, why the difference?” ‘Kaabil’ starred Yami opposite Hrithik Roshan. Eventually, the actress chose to step back and reset her approach. “I decided to stop questioning,” she said. “I took a breather and rewired the way I approached films, choosing the kind of stories and directors I wanted to associate with, within the choices I had. And that’s when Uri and Bala happened. After that, everything changed.”

Indigo crisis: ‘Exemplary’ action on airline likely as DGCA tables report

Indigo crisis: ‘Exemplary’ action on airline likely as DGCA tables report
IndiGo crisis (Picture credit: PTI)

NEW DELHI: The stage is now set for “exemplary” government action against IndiGo — a likely combination of steep fines along with regulatory glare on some airline officials, among other things — for its schedule collapse earlier his month that affected over 5,000 flights and left lakhs of passengers stranded.DGCA on Friday evening submitted its report on the “circumstances leading to operational disruptions” to the civil aviation ministry, which is also expected to shed light on why only the airline’s domestic network collapsed while international flights were barely affected.Aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu had said in Parliament that the government would take “exemplary” action against IndiGo once the probe was over. “An inquiry committee, headed by (DGCA’s) joint DG Sanjay K Bramhane, submitted its report Friday evening. The report is confidential,” said a ministry spokesperson. It is learned that the accountable manager of the airline, an expat, could have his approval withdrawn. While a number of factors led to the schedule collapse at India’s largest domestic airline, the failure of its operations control centre and a breakdown of trust between pilots and expat-led management added fuel to the fire.Govt wants IndiGo to set its house in order, given the critical role the airline plays with over 64% domestic market share and also being the largest airline in terms of international traffic. In banking parlance, IndiGo and Air India Group are now “too big to fail” as all other players in the domestic market are either fledgling or struggling to survive. IndiGo had cancelled only 2.4% of its 2,702 international flights between Dec 1 and 9. Domestic cancellations were 10 times higher at almost 25% of the 17,404 scheduled flights not being operated.IndiGo is also probing this collapse but government action is going to be decided on the basis of the DGCA report. The regulator’s probe panel under joint DG Bramhane was set up on December 5, to “identify underlying causes leading to widespread operational disruptions.” It was also to “assess adequacy of manpower planning, fluctuating rostering systems, and implementation preparedness in the context of (new flight duty norms for pilots).
