Indian govt also completely rejected as false the narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh. “It is unfortunate that the interim govt has neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence with India regarding the incidents,” said the ministry.India reiterated it has close and friendly relations with the people of Bangladesh rooted in the liberation struggle, and strengthened through various developmental and people-to-people initiatives.“We are in favour of peace and stability in Bangladesh and have consistently called for free, fair, inclusive and credible polls, conducted in a peaceful atmosphere,” it said.Bangladesh foreign adviser Touhid Hossain, however, said summoning the high commissioner was a “normal diplomatic practice”. The Indian high commissioner had been summoned a few days earlier, he told reporters. “It is better to accept the reality that from the beginning of the interim govt till today, there has been tension with India”, but the govt is trying to build a good working relationship with India, he said.He also said Bangladesh does not want advice from India on how its elections should be conducted. The govt is committed to holding free and fair election, Hossain said, adding, “We know we will hold a fair election, and we will do so.” Referring to Hasina’s tenure, he said India did not issue similar calls for fair elections over past 15 years.

BENGALURU: A 34-year-old mechanic died in the early hours of Saturday after falling from a scooter while being rushed to hospital following a heart attack. His wife has alleged that lack of timely medical care and the indifference of passing motorists contributed to his death.The deceased, Venkataraman, a resident of Balaji Nagar in Ittamadu, Banashankari III Stage, began experiencing severe chest pain around 3:30 am while asleep at home. Alarmed, his wife Roopa K immediately took him on their scooter to a nearby private hospital in Kathriguppe.

However, according to Roopa, they were told that no doctor was available and were advised to go to another private hospital close by. There, an ECG was conducted, which confirmed that Venkataraman suffered a heart attack. The doctors reportedly advised Roopa to take him to Jayadeva Hospital for specialised treatment.Roopa alleged that the hospital neither provided emergency treatment nor arranged an ambulance. With no immediate alternative and fearing for her husband’s life, the couple decided to head back home briefly and attempt to reach Jayadeva Hospital on their scooter.Tragedy struck around 4:21 am, barely 100–200 metres from their house, when Venkataraman experienced severe chest pain again. The couple lost balance, and he fell onto the road. Despite sustaining injuries herself, Roopa got up and rushed to her husband, realising that his condition was critical.In a bid to save him, she waved down passing two-wheelers and cars, pleading for help. “I begged people to stop and help me take my husband to the hospital,” she told media persons. “But most of them just went past without stopping.”Venkataraman lay on the road struggling to breathe. After a few minutes, a pedestrian stopped and stayed with them while Roopa continued seeking help. Soon, Venkataraman’s sister arrived at the spot along with another person and also tried to stop vehicles, but with little success.Nearly seven minutes later, a car driver finally stopped. By then, Venkataraman lost consciousness. His sister immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for a couple of minutes before they rushed him to a nearby hospital. Doctors there declared him brought dead. Her nightmare experience after falling from the scooter is captured in a CCTV camera installed at a building at the spot.Despite her immense loss, Roopa took a humane decision to donate her husband’s eyes. “If someone helped us immediately, my husband might have survived,” she said, breaking down. “He wanted to live. That is why he tried to ride to the hospital despite his pain,” Roopa told media.Roopa has demanded action against the private hospital that, she alleges, failed to treat her husband or arrange an ambulance. She further claimed that the hospital staff may have neglected her husband because of their financial condition.Expressing anguish over the public’s response, Roopa said the incident highlighted a growing lack of compassion. “It was shocking how inhumane people were at that moment. Helping someone in distress can save a life. I request everyone please stop and help. No one should go through what we did,” she said.

Nagpur: Comptroller and Auditor General of India Sanjay Murthy on Wednesday flagged serious gaps in the direct benefit transfer (DBT) system, stating that thousands of crores of rupees were flowing into beneficiary accounts without mandatory checks due to weak data integration and siloed functioning within departments.“There are significant gaps in the level of checks to prevent duplication, and cross-verification of data. Govt departments are working in silos to such an extent that different joint secretaries in a single department do not refer to the same database,” Murthy said while addressing the inaugural batch of IRS officers, who will begin training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur. “We talk about Jan Dhan-, Aadhaar- and mobile phone-linked database connectivity. Still, if looking at the maturity level at which the databases are deployed, especially from reports we generate, there is a huge gap,” he said.India is a vast nation, can’t have same yardstick everywhere: CAGWe say these are all Aadhaar-based beneficiaries, but the amount of de-duplication or cross-database verification mandated by the DBT mission is missing. Still, there are thousands of crores going into the system without basic checks in financial inclusion schemes,” the CAG said.Talking to TOI about the need to plug the huge DBT gaps, Sanjay Murthy said, “India is a vast country and we cannot have the same yardstick everywhere. Southern states have a head start in the application of technology, leading to availability of more mature data for audit.” It would be worthwhile to examine whether basic checks and balances are followed while implementing a govt scheme, he said, adding though the negligence may not be deliberate there should be a level of accuracy in implementation.Talking to IRS probationers, Murthy said his department’s officers would share their experiences with taxmen for further scrutiny. Databases from agencies like ministry of road transport and highways, Goods and Services Tax or a state’s integrated financial management system can be a mine of information.On social sector audit, the CAG said technology has cut audit time drastically, allowing completion in 45 days. Now the department seven schemes can be audited at a time. The CAG, as an outsider, can access the database of different schemes and correlate, he said.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday modified its earlier order restraining Delhi and NCR authorities from taking coercive action against “end-of-life” vehicles – 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles – and said the reprieve would apply only to BS 4 or BS 6 emission norm-compliant vehicles.This order will impact over 14.7 lakh BS 1 compliant cars, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, buses and goods carriers; more than 38.7 lakh BS 2 compliant ones; and another 53.7 lakh BS 3 vehicles. A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi passed the order on an application by Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Need to restrict plying of vehicles on basis of BS standards: CAQMOn Aug 12, an SC bench led by then CJI B R Gavai had said, “We direct that no coercive steps be taken against owners of vehicles on the ground that these are 10 years old (in case of diesel) and 15 years old (in case of petrol).”Additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati said BS 1, BS 2 and BS 3 vehicles have completed 24 years, 20 years and 15 years, respectively, and are a major cause of air pollution in Delhi-NCR. The CAQM said a BS 1 diesel vehicle produces 5.4 times more CO (BS-2 two times more and BS-3 1.28 times more), 12.13 times more NOx (BS-2 8.75 times more and BS-3 6.25 times more) and 31.11 times more PM (BS-2 18 times and BS-3 2.3 times more) than a BS 4 compliant diesel vehicle.Agreeing to modify its Aug-12 order that had asked the authorities not to take coercive measures against end-of-life vehicles, the bench said only vehicles which are BS 4 and BS 6 compliant would not be proceeded against if they are older than 15 years.The CAQM, in its affidavit, said, “One of the criteria determining the fitness of a vehicle is its emissions. The emissions of any vehicle are tested against its BS standard category. Thus, an otherwise fit vehicle would still be emitting pollutants as per its BS standard. Since Delhi-NCR faces an extraordinary situation, especially during the winter season due to poor dispersal of pollutants on account of unfavourable meteorological conditions, there is a need to restrict the plying of polluting vehicles based on emission standards in Delhi-NCR.”In compliance with orders of SC and National Green Tribunal, CAQM had issued a directive on July 8 mandating retail outlets to refuse fuel to all end-of-life vehicles with effect from Nov 1 this year in Delhi and from April 1, 2026, in five high-vehicle-density districts contiguous to Delhi, besides other actions in accordance with law.

KOLKATA: A 35-year-old man entered a house and randomly stabbed his 28-year-old “girlfriend” multiple times before he reportedly jumped from the fourth-floor balcony on Tuesday around 8.15 am in the Posta area of central Kolkata.The man, Vicky Sharma, a resident of Jagmohan Mullick Lane, was taken to a nearby hospital in a serious condition, where the attending doctors declared him dead. Meanwhile, the woman, Shikha Singh, is stated to be critical and has been admitted to hospital.According to police, Shikha’s husband passed away two years ago. She lived with her two children on rent in the Shibthakur Lane area of Posta. She earned her living doing sewing jobs. Locals reported that Shikha met Vicky while her husband was still alive, and neighbours saw Vicky visit their home a couple of times. However, no one knew the nature of their relationship. A few months ago, Shikha came close to Vicky, who stayed around two blocks away in the same neighbourhood.In recent days, locals observed Vicky making derogatory comments about Shikha while passing by her house, but he did not enter her residence. “Around 8 am on Tuesday, when Shikha’s children were at school, Vicky suddenly entered her home. Shikha was alone at that time, and Vicky allegedly attacked her with a knife. He then jumped from the fourth floor. Both were quickly taken to hospital, but Vicky had died by then.Police have started an investigation to determine why the man acted this way.
