NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s directive regarding the redefinition of the Aravalli Hills and demanded the resignation of union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav.Congress leader Jairam Ramesh in a post on X wrote, “In light of this decision, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change should resign immediately. This ruling dismisses all the arguments they were making in favor of changing the definition.”

This comes after the Supreme Court put on hold its earlier decision of November 20, which had accepted the Central Environment Ministry’s definition of the Aravalli Hills and the Aravalli Range. The November order had effectively exposed large parts of the Aravalli region to potential regulated mining and other commercial activities, raising concerns about ecological degradation and loss of natural barriers against desertification.Reacting to the top court’s order, Ramesh further wrote, “The Indian National Congress welcomes the directives issued by the Supreme Court on the Modi government’s attempts to alter the definition of the Aravalli.” The Congress leader also stated that the matter requires further study, highlighting that the proposed changes have already faced opposition from the Forest Survey of India and the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee. He added that the top court’s order has sparked ‘a ray of hope’. “A more detailed study of this issue will now be conducted. It is essential to remember that the opposition to this new definition had also come from the Forest Survey of India itself, the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee, and the court’s amicus curiae. For now, this has certainly provided some temporary relief, but the struggle against the Modi government’s conspiracies to open up the Aravalli for mining, real estate, and other activities must be continued relentlessly and with greater strength. Today, the Supreme Court’s directives have sparked a ray of hope, ” Ramesh added. The apex body’s order emphasized that the matter requires a more detailed and comprehensive study. The court observed that earlier expert reports and its own observations had been “misconstrued” in some quarters and directed that a new high-powered committee of domain experts be constituted to conduct a thorough “multi-temporal examination” of the Aravalli Hills and Ranges. This committee will assess the structural and ecological integrity of the hill range, which serves as the only natural barrier preventing the Thar Desert from advancing into the fertile Gangetic plains.The Supreme Court has also issued notices to the Centre and the four states through which the Aravalli range passes Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi seeking their responses in the suo motu case titled In Re: Definition of Aravalli Hills and Ranges and Ancillary Issues.Environmentalists have highlighted that over 1,200 mining leases are currently active in Aravalli districts across Rajasthan, underlining the importance of an independent and detailed review to protect water security, air quality and the overall ecological balance in the region.

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday condemned the fatal assault case of Tripura student Anjel Chakma and his brother in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun.In a social media post on X, the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha pinned the blame of Chakma’s death on BJP, claiming that the hate crime was the result of “toxic content and irresponsible narratives.”

“What happened to Anjel Chakma and his brother Michael in Dehradun is a horrific hate crime. Hate doesn’t appear overnight. For years now it is being fed daily – especially to our youth – through toxic content and irresponsible narratives. And it’s being normalised by the hate-spewing leadership of the ruling BJP,” Rahul said.“India is built on respect and unity, not fear and abuse. We are a country of love and diversity. We must not become a dead society that looks away while fellow Indians are targeted. We must reflect and confront what we are allowing our country to become. NEW DELHI: Dense fog blanketed Delhi and large parts of North India on Monday, triggering widespread disruption across air and rail networks, with hundreds of flights cancelled or delayed and trains running hours behind schedule, leaving passengers stranded and frustrated.At the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, at least 128 flights — 64 departures and 64 arrivals — were cancelled, while eight flights were diverted due to low visibility conditions. Nearly 200 flights were delayed, with an average departure delay of around 24 minutes, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24. Visibility at the airport dropped to as low as 50 metres, forcing operations to continue under CAT III conditions, an advanced landing system used during dense fog. Delhi’s AQI also crossed 400 on Monday, hitting ‘severe’ category of air pollution.Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said runway visibility was gradually improving but warned that departures and arrivals could remain affected.IndiGo cancelled 80 flights across its network due to bad weather, with around half of those cancellations at Delhi airport. Other affected airports included Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Dehradun, Indore, Patna and Bhopal. KALYAN: The seat-sharing formula between the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) for the upcoming Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) elections has been finalised. Of the total 122 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) will contest 68 seats, while the MNS will field candidates in 54 seats.According to MNS’s Ex-MLA Pramod (Raju) Patil, the MNS will begin distributing AB forms to its candidates from Sunday evening, marking the formal start of its election preparations. Nomination filing will start from Monday and is expected to be completed within the next two days.

Patil taken dig at Mahayuti’s alliance in KDMC saying that while the Mahayuti’s alliance exists on paper, it lacks unity at the grassroots level. “The alliance has happened in words, not in spirit,” Patil said. He alleged that several leaders who were earlier associated with the MNS had switched to the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and the BJP ahead of the elections after paying money in the hope of securing tickets. “They have not received nominations there and are now calling us, asking to be taken back. The doors of the MNS are permanently closed for them,” he said.Patil also pointed to growing unrest within the BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), stating that many aspirants are likely to be denied tickets in the civic polls. With municipal elections being held after a gap of nearly 10 years, every party has a large number of ticket-seekers, he said, adding that the disappointment of workers who have toiled for five to ten years but may not get nominations is natural.Apart from the 54 seats allotted to the MNS, the remaining seats will be contested by Shiv Sena (UBT). The alliance plans an aggressive campaign in Kalyan and Dombivli, including a joint public rally of MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray. A request has been made to both leaders to keep a day reserved for the joint rally.Expressing confidence, Patil said the alliance would win the KDMC elections and that the MNS would have its mayor in the municipal corporation.Reacting to recent remarks made by Jain monks, Patil said religious figures should refrain from making political statements. “Saints and monks should focus on their spiritual duties and avoid comments that could benefit any political party during elections,” he said.
