NCP (SP) falling apart in Mumbai? Alliances fail, big netas quit | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Sharad Pawar-led NCP suffered a huge blow ahead of the BMC elections as its Mumbai unit president Rakhi Jadhav joined BJP, and several poll aspirants, including Nitin Deshmukh and former corporator Dhananjay Pisal, defected to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP on Monday. The NCP (SP) seems on the verge of disintegration in Mumbai, political observers said, as state party president Shashikant Shinde and senior leader Jayant Patil failed to stitch an alliance with Maha Vikas Aghadi allies — Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress — despite several rounds of talks. Further, the two senior leaders did not give any direction to the cadre and local netas forcing them to look for alternative political options. “There is a total collapse of the NCP (SP) party machinery in Mumbai. This was purely because of poor handling of affairs,” a political observer said. “They should have allied with Ajit Pawar’s NCP like they are doing in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. But by not finalising an alliance with either side, they ended up destroying whatever little party organisation was there. They lost good candidates to BJP, which is a setback. It seems that NCP (SP) gave up BMC altogether. Surprisingly, Ajit Pawar’s NCP did better,” a political observer said.Pisal, who was previously an NCP group leader in the BMC, will now contest from ward no 111 on an Ajit Pawar-led NCP ticket. Three-time corporator Jadhav joined BJP as she was reportedly dissatisfied with the response from NCP (SP). “BJP is working for Mumbai, and I took this decision to work in my constituency. I did not get the expected response from NCP (SP), and we could not do justice to the party workers,” she said.On Monday, NCP (SP) released its first list of seven candidates for the BMC polls, including Ajit Raorane from ward no 43, Sanjay Kamnle from ward no 140, Manju Jaiswal from ward no 112, and Ganesh Shinde from ward no 48.The undivided NCP had eight corporators in the 2017 BMC polls, and party supremo Sharad Pawar was known to have a base in several wards. For over a week, the NCP (SP) held parallel negotiations with Sena (UBT) and Congress, but both alliances failed to work out. NCP (SP) initially demanded 50 seats from Congress after efforts to reach a workable seat-sharing arrangement with the Sena (UBT)-MNS combine did not materialise. Congress functionaries said they offered around two dozen seats to NCP (SP) since the party has presence in some areas. On Dec 26, Jayant Patil met Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray at Matoshree. Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said: “There is no need to announce that the NCP (SP) is with us…We left most of the seats that they wanted. That means an alliance was formed. Some of the seats they wanted went to the MNS, so we told them to discuss it with Raj Thackeray. We ended this issue from our side.”

Another US strike, two more dead: Anti-drug campaign toll crosses 100 — watch

At least two “male narco-terrorists” were killed in a strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat in the Eastern Pacific, bringing the total killed in Washington’s campaign in the region to at least 107.In a post to X, US Southern Command said “intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations,” adding two men were killed. The post included a black-and-white video of the “lethal kinetic strike” on a small boat, with what appeared to be two explosive flashes and flaming debris visible. The US military’s post did not specify where exactly the strike took place.Since September, the US military carried out at least 30 strikes on what it said were boats used to smuggle drugs to the United States, with the majority of the attacks occurring in the Eastern Pacific. Some also occurred in the Caribbean Sea.The administration provided no evidence that the targeted boats were involved in drug trafficking, prompting debate about the legality of these operations.International law experts and rights groups said the strikes likely amounted to extrajudicial killings, a charge that Washington denied.News of the latest attack came after US President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that Washington hit and destroyed a docking area for alleged drug boats in Venezuela, in what could amount to the first land strike of the military campaign said to target drug trafficking. In recent months, Trump waged a pressure campaign against Venezuela’s leftist President Nicolas Maduro, who accused Washington of seeking regime change to gain access to the Latin American country’s massive oil reserves. The US also imposed a partial naval blockade on Venezuela and recently intercepted oil tankers.Trump said he did not need lawmakers’ approval to strike suspected drug cartels at sea or on land in Venezuela, citing concerns over information leaks.

Where do we get captains from? AI, IndiGo locked in dogfight for pilots amid FDTL fallout; joining bonus up to Rs 50 lakh | Delhi News

Where do we get captains from? AI, IndiGo locked in dogfight for pilots amid FDTL fallout; joining bonus up to Rs 50 lakh

NEW DELHI: Call it the IndiGo schedule collapse or its fallout impact. A clamour has broken out between the budget airline and Air India group over having adequate captains to avoid a repeat of what happened under the new safety-enhancing flight duty time limitation (FDTL) rules.IndiGo has had to commit to DGCA about hiring pilots – it’ll induct 100 in Jan itself – and AI has already come out with an ad for getting more aviators on board. But both airlines are also facing a significant number of captain resignations – with some leaving one for the other and mostly for joining foreign carriers. So, the hiring is also to ensure they don’t go below their current numbers, which has made the scramble more intense than anything seen before in Indian skies. For once, their balance sheet-centric human resource departments are on the back foot and can’t oppose sprucing of ranks after what happened earlier this month. A senior officer of one of the two big Indian carriers claimed its captains are already getting “calls with joining bonus of upto Rs 50 lakh”.“Where do we get captains from? Under the new FDTL, experienced pilots’ availability will become acute. There will be a lot of poaching from each other,” said a senior airline officer. A few years ago, said a senior pilot, IndiGo had offered a joining bonus to experienced aviators to join which would take care of the bond payment, if any, needed to be paid to the airline they were resigning from. “This was in the range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh to take care of the bond, which back then was somewhere between Rs 5 and 15 lakh,” the pilot said.

Road ministry to do away with arbitration for disputes in NH sector which are for over Rs 10cr | India News

Road ministry to do away with arbitration for disputes in NH sector which are for over Rs 10cr

NEW DELHI: Seeking to end alleged malpractices in high-value arbitration cases, including concerns over undue influence to obtain favourable rulings, the road transport ministry will do away with the provision of arbitration for disputes in the highway sector which are over Rs 10 crore. As per the finalised changes in contract norms, disputes valuing more than Rs 10 crore will be dealt only through conciliation or mediation. In case of no resolution, parties can take the matter to civil courts. The new norm would be applicable for all types of contracts – Build-Operate-Toll-Transfer (BOT-Toll), Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC).The changes in the contract conditions are being made based on a study of arbitration practices in the past 10-15 years. People familiar with the issue said that between 2015 and 2025, there were nearly 2,600 arbitration awards in the highways sector where contractors had raised disputes of around Re 90,000 crore and the arbitration award was little over Rs 30,000 crore in these cases. In addition, highway builders have made claims of another Rs 1 lakh crore through arbitrations. The finance ministry in June 2024 had issued guidelines stating that arbitration as a method of dispute resolution should not be routinely or automatically included in procurement contracts and tenders, especially in large contracts. “As a norm, arbitration (if included in contracts) may be restricted to disputes with a value less than Rs 10 crore. This figure is with reference to the value of the dispute (not the value of the contract, which may be much higher). lt may be specifically mentioned in the bid conditions/ conditions of contract that in all other cases, arbitration will not be a method of dispute resolution in the contract,” the guidelines said.TOI has also learnt that govt is looking at monitoring loopholes in the system due to which contractors get favourable orders from courts after highway authorities blacklist or ban them from bidding for failures or nonperformance.
