Afghanistan announce squad for T20 World Cup 2026; Gulbadin Naib, Naveen-ul-Haq return

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has unveiled their 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026. Star leg-spinner Rashid Khan will lead a balanced squad that blends experienced campaigners with emerging talent.

Afghanistan have been placed in Pool D alongside New Zealand, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Canada. Their campaign begins with a high-profile opener against New Zealand on February 8 in Chennai, a venue expected to assist Afghanistan’s renowned spin attack.

Experienced core anchors Afghanistan’s campaign

The squad features a strong spine of proven performers. Dynamic opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Ishaq will share wicketkeeping duties, while Ibrahim Zadran has been named vice-captain. The middle order is bolstered by seasoned allrounders Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai, offering both stability and flexibility.

Afghanistan’s bowling attack remains heavily spin-oriented, with Rashid joined by left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad and mystery off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The pace department is led by Fazalhaq Farooqi, providing variety alongside swing and seam.

Gulbadin Naib returns as big-match player

One of the most talked-about inclusions is veteran allrounder Gulbadin Naib, who returned to the T20I setup after limited recent appearances. Afghanistan chief selector Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil described Naib as a “big-match player,” a reputation earned through years of clutch performances.

Naib has amassed 986 at a strike rate of 121.57 and claimed 35 wickets across 78 T20Is. His calm finishing ability was on display during the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final, where his unbeaten 15 off nine balls against South Africa played a decisive role in Afghanistan’s historic run.

Fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq also made a timely comeback after recovering from a shoulder injury. At just 26, Naveen has already built an impressive T20I record, with 67 wickets at an average of 18.73 and an economy rate of 7.78.

His experience in franchise leagues, including the IPL and CPL, adds significant value. Naveen’s variations are expected to complement Farooqi’s left-arm pace, giving Afghanistan greater flexibility on flatter Indian surfaces.

Abdullah Ahmadzai receives maiden World Cup call-up

Young pacer Abdullah Ahmadzai received a maiden World Cup call-up, while left-handed batter Shahidullah Kamal retained his spot to provide balance in the middle order. Spinner AM Ghazanfar, despite strong performances, has been named among the reserves along with Ijaz Ahmadzai and Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi.

Afghanistan will use a T20I series against West Indies in the UAE from January 19 to 22 as preparation.

Jerrssis Wadia story from Vadodar to Adelaide via Mumbai | Cricket News

Meet Jerrssis Wadia: The six-hitting sensation shipped to Adelaide from Vadodara, with a Hardik Pandya connection
Watched by Tim Paine in a T10 tournament in Melbourne, Indian-origin batter Jerrssis Wadia’s fearless hitting has fast-tracked his rise in Australian cricket. From losing his U-19 years to COVID to smashing a 16-ball 34 in the BBL, the Mumbai-born 24-year-old is now tipped as the ‘Next Travis Head’ in South Australia.

New Delhi: Indian-origin batter Jerrssis Wadia became a social media sensation after he smoked 22 runs — three sixes — off the first three balls he faced in only his second match for the Adelaide Strikers against Brisbane Heat in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL). The clip went viral and even earned him praise from mean six-hitters like Hardik Pandya and Nicholas Pooran.“I wanted to hit a six literally every ball that I faced, to be honest,” laughs Wadia. “It was just about being really clear, backing my skills and trying to be as aggressive as I possibly could. Luckily, I could hit three, so that was nice.”“It’s honestly been surreal. The first couple of days, my Instagram just started blowing up. There were texts from so many Indians and Australians. I also got a couple of texts from top cricketers like Hardik Pandya and Nicholas Pooran. It still hasn’t sunk in yet. I’m still getting notifications every minute. It’s amazing how something like that can change your whole perspective and the entire environment around you,” adds Wadia.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The Pandya connection, however, isn’t just restricted to the text message as the two families go back a long way.

Growing up, Hardik used to take tuition from Wadia’s mother and even stayed at their house in Mumbai during his early days with the Indian cricket team. Hardik’s late father Himanshu was a big source of motivation for the Wadia household.

“They’re close family friends — Krunal and Hardik. I’ve learned a lot from them. They’re very senior to me. When Hardik was bursting onto the scene, I saw how tirelessly he worked. They used to practise at our ground back home. Seeing how their lives changed gave me hope that I could achieve it too. My dad, my uncle and my grandpa were good friends with Hardik’s dad. It’s a nice family connection. It was nice to be noticed by someone I admired growing up,” says Wadia. The 24-year-old played his U-16 and U-19 cricket for Baroda before moving to Adelaide. Wadia’s father, Dilzan Wadia, is a Bollywood actor based in Mumbai, but it was his cricket-mad grandfather Neville Wadia who, 16 years ago, became the oldest player to score a century in minor cricket, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.“My grandpa threw a ball at me when I was four, and I hit it back. That was the first time I connected the ball and I was really happy,” says Wadia.Talking about his roots, Wadia speaks about his grandfather’s influence on his cricket.

“My family is from India. All of them are in India. My parents are from Mumbai. I can speak Hindi properly, Gujarati properly, and a little bit of Marathi, but not very clearly,” he shares.“All my junior cricket was with the Baroda Cricket Association. That’s where my grandparents are still living. I lived and played with my grandparents all my life because my mom and dad used to work in Mumbai. It was really hard for them to take me to training. My grandpa was really enthusiastic and wanted me to become a cricketer. He was all in for me. He also has a Guinness World Record for being the oldest player to score a hundred, so cricket runs in our family a little bit,” he says.

Jerrssis decided to move to Australia after the coronavirus pandemic, when cricket completely stopped. He lost his peak U-19 years due to COVID and then, against his parents’ wishes, decided to move Down Under in search of greener pastures.“I thought about moving to Australia just for cricket. I always wanted to become a professional cricketer. I did play a lot of state cricket back home in India. I moved to Australia in 2022,” says Wadia.

I thought about moving to Australia just for cricket. I always wanted to become a professional cricketer.

Jerrssis Wadia

“I missed U-19s because of COVID. As you would know, in India COVID was really bad. It was tough. I think the BCCI decided to cancel junior tournaments. It became really hard because I missed my U-19 peak year. Once that happened, I knew it would be really tough to get through the system because of how good young cricketers are in India.“I also didn’t have belief in myself back then. Honestly, I was young and didn’t believe I could still make it. But something clicked and I just wanted to go. I wanted to leave the system back home. My parents didn’t agree and there were disagreements. It was tough initially because my family wasn’t helping financially. Everything was tough at the start. But one thing kept driving me — I just wanted to play cricket. That made me happy,” Wadia reflects.

Eight months ago, at a T10 tournament in Melbourne, former Australia captain Tim Paine was amazed to see an Indian-origin cricketer smoking sixes for fun. He asked the coaches, “Where has this guy come from?”“Tim Paine thought, hang on, who is this kid who came in? I haven’t seen him anywhere. And from nowhere, he’s hitting the first ball for six,” says Wadia.

They’re close family friends — Krunal and Hardik. I’ve learned a lot from them

Jerrssis Wadia

“I think it was the biggest change and the biggest shift in my cricketing life. There was an academy tournament. Adelaide Strikers were playing Melbourne Stars at the academy level. It was like a B team of Adelaide Strikers. I got the opportunity, luckily. I played as a spinner, so I didn’t get to bat in the first couple of games.“In T10, it’s really hard to get batting. And luckily, on the day Paine was present, our top order got out and I went in to bat in the last two overs. I had eight or 12 balls and hit two or three sixes. Then, in the next game, I got a chance a little higher. I again hit a six off the first ball and got around 30 off six or seven balls.

“Paine had a little chat with me in Melbourne. From then on, I started believing that, ‘hang on, I can actually play at this level and people are now noticing me.’ From then on, I just kept working hard. Now it has been eight months and life has changed a little bit,” says Wadia. As the adage goes, it takes a village to raise a kid, and Wadia is no different. Cricket was in his roots, but it was the rise of the Pandya brothers that inspired him. If it was the Pandya brothers in Baroda, it was Tim Paine and Ryan Harris in Adelaide who took Wadia under their wings.“I met Paine in Melbourne earlier this year. He told me that I have something in me to play at the next level. That gave me the drive to push harder and break that door. Paine was the guy who made me feel like I belong at this level,” he recollects.

The goal is to play for Australia, not just one game, but a long and sustainable career in all three formats

Jerrssis Wadia

“He was the number one guy who gave me belief. Also, the SACA coaches helped me a lot, along with Ryan Harris. John Palmer is another coach who helped me. There’s also an Indian coach, Levy Singh. A lot of people played a part in my life in Australia. I give credit to all of them. Every learning, every disagreement. I’m grateful for it,” says Wadia. In Paine, who is also coach of Australia A and the Adelaide Strikers, Wadia has found the right mentor. After that blitz, if he remains consistent, sky is the limit.“It hasn’t happened in a year. It’s been a long work in progress. A lot of repetitions, a lot of drills, especially with ramps. I have to keep evolving. This is just the start of my journey,” he says. After moving to Adelaide, Wadia manifested becoming a professional cricketer. Now he has another wish — scoring centuries at The Adelaide Oval and Wankhede Stadium — one for the team he represents in the BBL, and the other for his favourite IPL team (Mumbai Indians) he grew up watching.

“But it’s been nice. It was a decent feeling. I was amazed.”“It’s about the work I’ve done before all this. This is just the platform I got, luckily. The situation allowed me to play what I’ve worked on. I’m pleased that it’s working, but now it’s about what I can add and how I can do it consistently. That’s the next learning.”“The only thing that helped me was the hunger I had. There was no one initially. It was tough personally. There was no one at the start,” he says.“The goal is to play for Australia, not just one game, but a long and sustainable career in all three formats.

Jerrssis Wadia

Jerrssis Wadia was discovered by Tim Paine

“I love Test cricket. I love four-day cricket. I love first-class cricket and red-ball cricket. I want to play all three formats. That’s the goal. One step at a time. I want to play cricket at the highest level, against the best players. I want to get better and get tested,” he says.Wadia, a Bollywood buff and an Arijit Singh fan, lives by his favourite Hindi film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara — move to foreign shoes, the punt in playing in BBL and the adventure that comes with the sport. It won’t be easy for Wadia going forward. After a scintillating start to the BBL, his quest for redemption has just begun. It will be chaotic — but it’s the chaos he has always dreamt of: dust, runs, centuries and victories.

SEC vs PR, SA20 2025-26, Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Paarl Royals?

Sunrisers Eastern Cape enter this clash as form team and favourites, while Paarl Royals are desperate to hit reset after a tough start to the season. With contrasting momentum and a seamer-friendly St George’s Park on offer, this shapes as a high-intensity SA20 contest.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape have begun SA20 2025-26 with two wins in two games and sit at the top of the table, reflecting a well-rounded, in-form unit. Paarl Royals have played just one game and were thrashed by Sunrisers earlier in the tournament, leaving them at the bottom and under early pressure. Eastern Cape also dominated the head-to-head earlier this season with a massive 137-run victory, a result that will strongly influence both confidence and tactics in this game.

SEC vs PR, SA20 2025-26: Match details

  • Date and Time: December 31 (Wednesday); 04:30 pm IST / 11:00 pm GMT / 1:00 pm Local
  • Venue: St George’s Park, Gqeberha

SEC vs PR, Head-to-Head Record in SA20:

Matches played: 7 | Sunrisers Eastern Cape won: 5 | Paarl Royals won: 2 | No result/Tied: 0

St George’s Park Pitch Report

St George’s Park in Gqeberha is expected to favour the bowlers, especially the fast men, much like what has been seen in recent SA20 matches. The pitch generally offers good pace and bounce with a bit of seam movement early on, allowing pacers to make an impact in the opening overs. Spinners have had a tougher time here, with quick bowlers picking up the bulk of the wickets.

Batters will need to spend some time at the crease and play with patience early, as the new ball can be tricky. While the short boundaries can help power-hitters cash in later in the innings, the surface tends to slow down in the middle overs, and the slightly low bounce can often lead to sudden batting collapses. With dew expected to set in during tomorrow evening, conditions could become even more challenging and play a decisive role in the match.

Squads

Sunrisers Eastern Cape: Jonny Bairstow, Quinton de Kock (wk), Tristan Stubbs (c), Lewis Gregory, Matthew Breetzke, Marco Jansen, Patrick Kruger, Senuran Muthusamy, Adam Milne, Anrich Nortje, Chris Wood, Allah Ghazanfar, JP King, Christopher King, Jordan Hermann, Mitchell Van Buuren, Tharindu Rathnayake, James Coles, Beyers Swanepoel, Lutho Sipamla

From build-out to scale-up: India’s infrastructure moves from projects to platforms in 2025

From build-out to scale-up: India’s infrastructure moves from projects to platforms in 2025
In the roads and highways segment, the government continues to prioritize the expansion and enhancement of the national highways network.

By Sushi Shyamal VemuIndia’s infrastructure sector is experiencing a significant transformation, as major developers and Infrastructure Funds shift their focus from isolated project implementation to developing large-scale infrastructure platforms. This change is driven by increased government spending, a more robust regulatory environment, policies oriented toward growth, and reliable financing mechanisms. Following the union budget in 2021, which marked a pivotal move toward capital expenditure, the government has steadily increased its allocations for infrastructure with the aim of stimulating economic demand and delivering major projects. The FY26 union budget earmarked ₹11.21 lakh crore for infrastructure—a 10% year-over-year rise, accounting for 3.1% of GDP estimates. In the roads and highways segment, the government continues to prioritize the expansion and enhancement of the national highways network. For FY26, the Ministry of Roads Transport & Highways (MoRTH) received a budget of ₹2.7 lakh crore, targeting 6,376 km of new bids, major expansions, and brownfield expressway projects. Over the past five years, NHAI has constructed between 4,200 and 6,500 km of national highways annually.Until 2020, India had only a handful of expressways—such as Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Agra (Yamuna), and Bangalore–Mysore corridor connecting key cities. MoRTH is now building 27 expressways and access-controlled corridors, totaling 9,860 km at a cost of ₹4.2 lakh crore. State governments are also at the forefront, working on landmark expressway projects like Maharashtra’s Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway and Ganga, Purvanchal, Bundelkhand expressways in Uttar Pradesh, connecting Bangalore city to Chennai, Pune and Nagpur in the south thereby enhancing both intra- and inter-state connectivity. These ambitious plans will deliver modern economic corridors, improve logistics efficiency, connect pilgrimage sites, and depend heavily on hybrid financing to attract private investment and foreign capital.Through the Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLP) program, MoRTH is establishing 35 infra logistics parks—each over 100 acres—with multimodal transport access, modular warehouses, and container terminals near ports to optimize freight movement and reduce shipping costs and times. Additionally, the Port Connectivity Project seeks to upgrade last-mile connectivity to all active and under-construction ports, with 108 projects identified and 36 already completed. In line with the Viksit Bharat 2047 infrastructure vision, the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model has evolved considerably. The government is proactively engaging private investors, refining concession agreements, and promoting stable, consultative policy approaches across sub-sectors such as roadways, renewables, and ports & infra-logistics. These efforts have enhanced investor confidence and reinforced policy continuity. Innovative funding models also play a critical role. Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), regulated by SEBI, have matured from niche products for institutional investors to mainstream vehicles providing transparent, efficient, and long-term yield-oriented returns for both domestic and institutional capital providers. The potential reclassification of InvIT units to equity status promises to stimulate even greater participation from long-term capital sources. While early InvITs focused primarily on roads and power transmission assets, the next phase includes diversification into sectors like renewable energy, digital infrastructure, ports, airports, warehousing, and infra-logistics. InvITs are managing assets exceeding ₹7 lakh crore, with several new listings planned for 2026, aiming to bridge India’s infrastructure funding gap and recycle primary capital for institutional investors. The approach to financing highways is undergoing a major overhaul, with MoRTH raising ₹1.06 lakh crore so far through TOTs (Toll-Operate-Transfer) and InvIT. While NHAI’s current InvIT is privately listed (NHIT), a new public InvIT is being set up to facilitate retail participation alongside institutional investors such as Infrastructure funds, mutual funds, sovereign wealth funds, and pension funds. Private entities and developers are seizing opportunities in sectors like roads, renewables, and infra-logistics, benchmarking infrastructure quality against global standards for connectivity, safety, and operational excellence. There is a growing shift toward greener, low-carbon construction, with organizations investing in AI technologies to increase productivity, harness modular construction, manage resources efficiently, and ensure safer, more reliable journeys and services by analysing large datasets and optimizing project lifecycles.(Sushi Shyamal Vemu os Partner, Infrastructure Practice and Investment Banking Advisory at EY India.
