Trust Indian, not foreign voices: Goyal on BTA with US

Trust Indian, not foreign voices: Goyal on BTA with US

NEW DELHI: Days after govt rejected US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick’s claims, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal Sunday said that stakeholders should have trust in India, instead of relying on statements from overseas. “Trade deal is not negotiated in media. Trust India, don’t trust foreign statements. Have trust in your country, your motherland, India,” he said at an event when asked about the state of play on the bilateral trade deal. Last week, Lutnick had claimed that the India-US trade deal, which has been in the works since last Feb, did not go through as PM Narendra Modi did not call US President Donald Trump, unlike leaders from some other countries which managed to get lower tariffs as against 50% slapped on India. The comment had drawn a strong rebuttal from the ministry of external affairs, which said that the comments on the “circumstances” were “not accurate”, while reiterating that India was interested in a mutually beneficial bilateral trade deal. While five rounds of talks have been held and India has submitted a revised proposal, indicating its willingness to “significantly open up”, while protecting its sensitive sectors such as agriculture, dairy and MSMEs, Washington has not agreed to the offer and there is a stalemate of sorts. Periodically, Trump has raised the issue of Russian oil imports even as India has maintained that it will pursue policies and opt for purchases that are in the best interests of its consumers, while openly asserting its willingness for more energy purchases from the US.

Labour code: Cos’ Q3 nos to reflect higher gratuity | India News

Labour code: Cos' Q3 nos to reflect higher gratuity

NEW DELHI: The first impact of the labour codes will be felt in the Dec quarter results with companies making higher provision for gratuity. “Companies will need to update their gratuity liability provisions in line with Ind AS 19, recognising past service liabilities as the new labour codes came into effect on Nov 21, 2025. Many companies are in the process of obtaining actuarial valuations to true up their gratuity liability provisions, and the impact may be reflected in the Dec quarterly results. If such a true-up is not performed, companies may provide a disclosure explaining why it was omitted unless the impact is immaterial,” said Kuldip Kumar, partner at Mainstay Tax Advisors, a consulting company. Auditors told TOI that there may be some impact on the bottom lines of some of the companies, while some others may use the opportunity to update their provisions.

.

“Companies are evaluating the impact of the change in definition of wages and the impact on the provisions required in the quarterly accounts, in view of the labour codes, FAQs issued by the labour ministry and the Accounting Standards Board of the ICAI,” added Amarpal Chadha, partner at consulting firm EY India. Under the new law, at least half the earnings of an employee will be treated as basic salary and dearness allowance and companies will have to provide gratuity based on that. “The extent of the impact will depend on the existing compensation structure, for example, where excluded allowances exceed 50% of salary or the number of fixed-term employees, who now become eligible for gratuity after one year of service,” said Kumar. Besides, he said, according to draft rules for the new labour codes for calculating gratuity, items such as performance bonuses, stock option benefits, telephone, internet and medical reimbursements, creche allowance, and the value of meal vouchers are excluded. Therefore, it will not be surprising if some organisations can dodge the big jumps in gratuity liability. Higher provisions will be required by companies that did not always stick to the 50% gratuity formula as the rules have now categorically provided for the payment.

‘Remarkable features’: ASI prepares for deeper digs to trace Krishna’s ancient Dwarka; aims to explore unexamined areas | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: Dwarka, the ancient Gujarat coastal town closely associated with the legend of Lord Krishna and home to the revered Dwarkadhish Temple, is set to witness renewed rounds of archaeological excavations, both on land and underwater, senior officials of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have said. The proposed work aims to explore previously unexamined areas using modern technology to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s historical and cultural past.Underwater archaeological excavations at Dwarka were last carried out between 2005 and 2007, while limited exploratory studies were conducted again in 2025.

Ahmedabad Headlines Today — Key Stories You Shouldn’t Miss.

According to ASI officials, the upcoming phase will be more extensive and systematic. Alok Tripathi, additional director-general of ASI, told TOI that new areas at Beyt Dwarka and unexplored underwater zones will be covered by the agency’s Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW).“Dwarka has been under study for nearly 40 years, but the work so far has been limited in scope and objectives. We are now examining the other side of the mouth of the Gomti river,” Tripathi said.Experts said modern tools and technology would be deployed to enable larger and deeper excavations in the Arabian Sea. Tripathi himself was part of the five-member UAW team that conducted underwater exploratory work at Dwarka in Feb last year. During that time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also dived underwater off Dwarka coast to view submerged remains discovered on the seabed, drawing national attention to the site.On land, the focus will beon relatively undisturbed areas of Beyt Dwarka. Earlier excavations were largely concentrated near the cliff area. “We are now going deeper inside the forest area, where we have observed signs of a significant settlement. The site has some remarkable features, and excavations at lower levels could reveal important details about settlement planning, economic activities, arts and crafts, and the way of life of the inhabitants,” Tripathi said. The site has attracted attention alike due to the legend of the sunken city of Dwarka, believed to be founded by Lord Krishna. TheASI website indicates that explorations were carried out to understand the submerged archaeological remains off the coast of Dwarka as sculptures and stone anchors were found during low tide in coastal areas. The excavations so far have yielded many antiquities, including terracotta objects, beads, fragmented bangles, copper rings, iron ingots and pottery among others, according to the ASI website.Apart from Dwarka, the ASI has also initiated excavations at other key sites in Gujarat. Work has begun at Valabhipur, the ancient capital located in Bhavnagardistrict, and at Lothal, the Harappan-era site renowned for its water structure believed to be among the world’s oldest dockyards. With the upcoming National Maritime Heritage Complex near Lothal, archaeologists are exposing a larger area of the site using advanced tools and techniques. Tripathi emphasised that archaeology goes beyond excavation. “Our task is to place findings in perspective and fill gaps in historical understanding,” he said, adding that India’s use of technology in archaeology is on par with global standards and increasingly relies on interdisciplinary approaches.Gujarat has seen significant archaeological activity over the past decade, including extensive ASI-led excavations at Vadnagar in Mehsana district, PM Modi’s hometown, uncovering evidence of continuous habitation over two millennia. The state is also home to major Harappan sites such as Dholavira, now a Unesco World Heritage Site, and Lothal, highlighting Gujarat’s rich and layered archaeological heritage.

India closer to becoming 2nd nation to re-fuel on-orbit satellite | India News

India closer to becoming 2nd nation to re-fuel on-orbit satellite

BENGALURU: When OrbitAid’s 25-kg Ayulsat lifts off aboard Isro’s PSLV-C62 Monday, the mission’s success will bring India a step closer to becoming the second country in the world to demonstrate on-orbit satellite refuelling, a capability so far claimed only by China, reports Chethan Kumar. Last year, China carried out a similar demonstration, but details remain limited and official disclosures sparse. No other spacefaring nation, including the US, has publicly demonstrated the technology in orbit. However, US firm Astroscale is developing a refuelling technology but is yet to launch. Ayulsat won’t demonstrate a full on-orbit re-fuelling. It is designed as a target satellite to validate fuel transfer in the space environment. Unlike more complex servicing missions involving two spacecraft, OrbitAid’s first step focuses on internal refuelling within a single satellite, allowing engineers to study how fluids behave in microgravity under real orbital conditions. OrbitAid founder and CEO Sakthikumar R told TOI the first refuelling is expected to take place within four hours of launch.

I don’t use mobile, internet for day-to-day work: NSA | India News

I don't use mobile, internet for day-to-day work: NSA

NEW DELHI: National security adviser Ajit Doval, widely referred to as India’s ‘spymaster or James Bond’, has revealed that he does not use a mobile-phone or internet in his day-to-day work. When asked if he used mobile or internet for routine work, the NSA replied, “It is true that I do not use internet. I also do not use a phone, except for family matters or for speaking to people in other countries, which is necessary. I manage my work that way. There are many other means of communication as well, and some additional methods have to be arranged that people are not aware of.” He said this while addressing the inaugural session of Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026 at Bharat Mandapam here Saturday. Doval, who has been NSA since 2014, said it is important to take the right and farsighted decisions at the utmost time, particularly for the youth. However, the former IB director advised it is important to think about what “the next two steps will be before a person takes the first step”. He said India needs to strengthen itself as “we had a painful history of attacks and subjugation”. “We were a very advanced civilisation. We never broke anyone’s temples. We did not attack any foreigners, even when the rest of the world was weak, we did not understand the threats to our security. And, so history taught us a lesson. It is important that we remember that lesson because if the youth forget it, then it would be tragic for the country,” the NSA said. “Revenge is not a good word, but it can be a huge force. We have to avenge our history and take this country to the point where it is great again not just in terms of border security, but economy, social development, every aspect,” he said. The NSA spoke about the importance of decision-making in leadership and nation-building. “One common thing between when I was young and how I am today is the ability to make decisions. Whether you realise it or not, decision-making always walks with you. Youth take small and big decisions in daily life, and as you grow, these small decisions add up to big ones,” he said. “Napoleon once said, ‘I am not afraid of 1,000 lions led by a sheep, but I am afraid of 1,000 sheep led by a lion’. That is how important leadership is,” he explained. Expressing confidence in India’s future, Doval said, “India will be developed. The level to which our country has been brought under PM Modi, it will soon achieve the goal of being a developed nation. The real question is – who will lead the nation towards that development? If you want to be leaders on the path of Viksit Bharat, you must start making decisions now, and those decisions should be taken with a forward-looking vision, not just for today but for the future.

On home ground Thane, Shinde faces ultimate test of legitimacy | Mumbai News

Thane: In Thane city, which once gave undivided Shiv Sena its first share of power and muscle, the political contest is the ultimate test of legitimacy for deputy CM Eknath Shinde. While a win in his home ground would validate Shinde’s claim as the “true heir” of Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy, a defeat could further diminish the presence of Shiv Sena (UBT), which is already struggling for relevance here.Thane’s political churn mirrors its urban transformation. Once a quiet suburb, the city began changing at the turn of the century as spiralling property prices in Mumbai pushed developers and homebuyers northwards. The widening of Ghodbunder Road, coupled with the conversion of industrial tracts into residential zones, fuelled rapid vertical growth. Its strategic position at Mumbai’s gateway attracted migrants from across Maharashtra and beyond, as well as upwardly mobile residents from distant suburbs seeking lifestyle upgrades in gated communities. But civic governance failed to keep pace with this expansion.

Mumbai Headlines Today — The Biggest Updates You Need to Know.

“From water supply and sewerage to waste management and public transport, the same set of deficiencies cuts across neighbourhoods,” said activist Dr Mahesh Bedekar. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, at a rally, pointed to unresolved issues with water supply, roads and waste management despite crores being spent. A passenger rights activist said inadequate public transport and parking facilities have worsened congestion and stretched commute times. In upscale Hiranandani Estate, resident Lipson Paul said, “Despite being among the highest tax-paying areas, mosquito infestation, repeated road digging and poor public transport remain unresolved.” At the city’s far edge Diva, resident Ananda Patil said, “We still lack reliable drinking water and proper roads. Promised hospitals remain on paper, forcing us to depend on Dombivli for healthcare.”CM Devendra Fadnavis, at a recent visit, said solutions would become visible in the coming years. Shinde pointed to the city’s changing skyline as evidence of projects cleared during his tenure as CM. Thane continues to be a Sena citadel despite repeated attempts to weaken its grip. The party’s dominance was underlined in the 2017 civic polls, when it won 67 of 131 seats and elected a mayor on its own, a rarity in recent municipal contests. The grip tightened after Shinde’s 2022 rebellion as he absorbed rival leaders. Yet, the contest is not without risk. Observers said Shinde’s biggest challenge is to erase the “traitor” tag and reframe himself as the rightful successor to Balasaheb and the late Anand Dighe. “It is no coincidence that Sena has fielded its strongest candidates in core areas and aggressively inducted rivals,” said an analyst. MNS leader Avinash Jadhav, however, said voter fatigue over misgovernance could favour new faces fielded by the Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance. Sena (UBT)’s Rajan Vichare said voters were disillusioned by unfulfilled promises.
