NEW DELHI: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday likened the organisation’s growth to that of a tree rising from a seed, saying the RSS continues to evolve and take on new forms while remaining fundamentally unchanged.Bhagwat made the remarks while addressing an event at the Sangh headquarters in the national capital to mark the organisation’s 100 years, which it completed in September last year.

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Calls For Hindu Unity, Says India Will Lead World In 20–30 Years

“The RSS is celebrating its centenary. But as the organisation evolves and takes on new forms, people perceive it as changing. However, it’s not actually changing; it’s simply unfolding gradually,” news agency PTI quoted Bhagwat as saying.“Just as a sprout emerges from a seed, and the mature tree, laden with fruits and flowers, is a different form, these two forms are distinct. Yet, the tree is fundamentally the same as the seed from which it grew,” he added.Bhagwat also remembered RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, calling him a “born patriot” who “dedicated his life to the service of the nation.”Referring to Hedgewar, a physician, he said, “The Sangh and Doctor saheb are synonymous terms.”The Sangh chief remarked that despite losing his parents at a very young age, Hedgewar did not allow the trauma to adversely affect his personality.“When such a great trauma occurs at a very young age, one often becomes isolated and prone to negative effects on one’s nature and personality, but that did not happen in his case. His personality had the ability to withstand even the greatest shocks without his faith or nature wavering in the slightest — a sign of excellent mental health and a strong, healthy mind, which he possessed from the beginning,” Bhagwat observed. He noted that such psychological strength could itself be a subject of study and research.

Not South Africa! Graeme Smith reveals his pick to win the T20 World Cup 2026

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is set to be a landmark tenth edition of the tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. A total of 20 nations will compete in 55 high-octane matches, following the successful format of the 2024 edition with a group stage, Super 8s, and knockouts. The tournament will be spread across eight iconic venues, including the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

This edition also marks a historic debut for Italy, highlighting the growing global footprint of the T20 format as it approaches its inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. Fans are eagerly anticipating the final, which is slated to take place on March 8, potentially at the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

“You can never write them off”: Graeme Smith names his favourite team to win the T20 World Cup 2026

Speaking in Durban on January 10, 2026, South African legend Graeme Smith named India as a primary favorite for the upcoming World Cup, despite the team navigating a period of structural change. Smith highlighted that the combination of home conditions and raw talent makes India an automatic candidate for the final four. He described the current state of the team under head coach Gautam Gambhir as a fascinating watch:

“With India’s talent, you can never write them off. It’s a home World Cup. And it does seem an interesting transition phase in Indian cricket, you know, between Gautam (Gambhir) and senior players and, you know, who’s next and how that transition happens. And it seems to be in an interesting place. So, it’s going to be good to watch how things go. But certainly from a talent perspective, India, if they’re not in the last four at least, I’ll be very surprised.” Smith was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Smith reveals his T20 World Cup final dream

While acknowledging India’s prowess, Smith admitted that his heart remains with the Proteas, especially after their narrow seven-run loss to India in the 2024 final. He expressed strong belief in South Africa’s current group, particularly their ability to handle subcontinental spin, which will be the defining factor in matches across India and Sri Lanka. Smith candidly shared his hope for a rematch in the final:

“Obviously, I’d like us to beat India in the final (laughs). I think if Shukri [Conrad] and the team can get their combinations right, I think there’s a real opportunity that the team can do very well. And, you know, I think there’s enough quality of ability to play spin there as well in that middle order, particularly in India. So, let’s hope, you know, that there will be a good World Cup around the corner.” Smith concluded.

‘Virat Kohli retired too early; he is a machine’: Allan Donald | Cricket News

'Virat Kohli retired too early; he is a machine': Allan Donald

NEW DELHI: South African pace great Allan Donald feels Virat Kohli may have stepped away from Test cricket a bit earlier than expected, but believes the Indian batting star still has the hunger to carry on until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Donald, who shared a strong rapport with Kohli during his stint as Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s bowling coach in the IPL in 2014 and 2015, pointed to the batter’s unmatched work ethic as the reason behind his belief.“You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen hunger in a player other than Virat. I’ve got massive respect for him. I often talk about it in the dressing rooms and chats about being a champion trainer. There’s no one that trains as hard as him. He is just a machine,” Donald told a select media gathering during the SA20.

“I actually miss him in the Test match arena. I think he’s retired too early, but yeah, I look with no doubt we will see him in the white-ball arena in the World Cup very, very soon,” he added.Donald also spoke about South Africa’s prospects in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, saying the Proteas have assembled a well-balanced and competitive squad capable of performing strongly.“It’s going to be a a heck of a tournament in India, isn’t it? South Africa picked a very strong squad. There might always be question marks about who’s not going and who should have gone and all that kind of stuff. I think India have got the best T20 wickets on the planet. It’s just so hard for any bowler and I’ve seen it in the IPL with scores 124 in a power play. That’s just where the skill of batting has gone.“If you can win the inches from a bowling point of view and plot your way very carefully and smartly, then, you know, it’s going to come down to that again. So, I hope to see South Africa in the final as well,” he said.

Another milestone! Virat Kohli goes past Sourav Ganguly

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli and records continue to go hand in hand, and the Indian batting great added another landmark to his glittering career when he walked out to take the field in the first of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara. Kohli marked his 309th ODI for India, moving ahead of Ganguly, who finished his career with 308 matches in the format. Only four Indians now sit above Kohli on the all-time list of ODI appearances — Sachin Tendulkar (463), MS Dhoni (347), Rahul Dravid (340) and Mohammad Azharuddin (334). Given Kohli’s current fitness levels and workload management, it is widely expected that he will climb further up this elite list in the near future. With his focus firmly on the 2027 ODI World Cup, the 36-year-old is likely to go past Azharuddin and Dravid on the appearances chart.

Most appearances for India in ODIs

Player ODI appearances
Sachin Tendulkar 463
MS Dhoni 347
Rahul Dravid 340
M Azharuddin 334
Virat Kohli* 309
Sourav Ganguly 308

Kohli’s appetite for records is not limited to appearances alone. Entering the New Zealand series with 27,975 international runs, he is also on the verge of becoming the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the sport across all formats. He needs just 42 more runs to overtake Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara (28,016 runs) and move into second place behind Sachin Tendulkar.

Israel on high alertMeanwhile, Israel is on high alert as US president Donald Trump is weighing options for military strikes in Iran amid ongoing protests in the country, news agency Reuters reported, citing three Israeli sources familiar with the matter.

.

The news agency cited a source and claimed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US secretary of state Marco Rubio discussed the possibility of US intervention in Iran over a phone call on Saturday.Additionally, the matter was also discussed during Israeli security consultations over the weekend, it added. The sources, however, did not elaborate on what Israel’s high-alert footing meant in practice. ‘USA stands ready to help’Earlier in the day, Trump warned Iran against continuing to kill protestors and indicated that the United States stands ready to act.In a Truth Social post on Saturday (US local time), he wrote: “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!”According to US officials, Trump is seriously considering authorising a strike in response to the Iranian regime’s efforts to suppress demonstrations set off by widespread economic grievances. The president has been presented with a range of options, including strikes on nonmilitary sites in Tehran, the capital, the New York Times reported, citing sources.

Senior US officials said that at least some of the options presented to Trump for the situation in Iran would be tied directly to elements of the country’s security services that are using violence to put down the growing protests.Iran’s counter-threat to US and IsraelMeanwhile, Iran warned that regional US military bases and Israel would be “legitimate targets” if America strikes the Islamic Republic.Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf made the threat as lawmakers rushed the dais in the Iranian parliament, shouting: “Death to America!”

In the event of an attack on Iran, both the occupied territory and all American military centers, bases and ships in the region will be our legitimate targets. We do not consider ourselves limited to reacting after the action and will act based on any objective signs of a threat.

“The people of Iran should know that we will deal with them in the most severe way and punish those who are arrested,” Qalibaf said.He went on to directly threaten Israel, “the occupied territory,” as he referred to it, and the US military, possibly with a preemptive strike.“In the event of an attack on Iran, both the occupied territory and all American military centers, bases and ships in the region will be our legitimate targets,” Qalibaf said. “We do not consider ourselves limited to reacting after the action and will act based on any objective signs of a threat.”116 dead in violent protests in IranAt least 116 civilians were killed and hundreds were injured in Iran as the country is witnessing one of the largest protests since 2022, when the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody sparked nationwide anti-government protests.Protests fuelled by a deepening economic crisis have swept Iran since they began on December 28, following the collapse of the Iranian rial, as soaring inflation has driven frustrated traders and university students into the streets of major cities, including Tehran.

Govt to achieve fiscal deficit target of 4.4 pc in FY26, may even better it: PwC

Govt to achieve fiscal deficit target of 4.4 pc in FY26, may even better it: PwC

NEW DELHI: The government is likely to achieve the fiscal deficit target of 4.4 per cent of the GDP in FY26, and it could even better it, a positive signal to global investors about India’s commitment to fiscal management, PwC Partner and Economic Advisory Services leader Ranen Banerjee said. The revision in the nominal GDP growth target from 10.1 per cent to 8 per cent by the National Statistical Office recently raised concerns about the government’s ability to meet the fiscal deficit target.Although the nominal GDP growth rate has been revised downward to 8 per cent from 10.1 per cent, the absolute numbers are almost matching the budget estimates, he said, adding that this means the denominator is not shrinking and the government should easily meet the 4.4 per cent fiscal deficit target. It is to be noted that the government overachieved its fiscal deficit target of 4.8 per cent against 4.9 per cent of GDP pegged for FY25.“It has a headroom to actually better it. We believe that optically speaking, it could be pegged at 4.3 per cent because it is a kind of signal that we are actually not only meeting the fiscal consolidation targets, but we are overachieving them,” Banerjee said.Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech last year, pegged the fiscal deficit for FY26 at Rs 15.69 lakh crore, or 4.4 per cent of GDP.Observing that the National Statistical Office’s revision of nominal GDP growth is in line with expectations, Banerjee said softer wholesale price indices, particularly food and oil prices, have contributed to a lower deflator, resulting in a smaller gap between nominal and real GDP growth. However, he said, the lower nominal GDP growth is expected to impact tax revenues, with an estimated shortfall of Rs 1.9 trillion in gross tax revenues. After accounting for GST compensation cess, he said, the shortfall could be around Rs 75,000 crore or Rs 0.75 trillion.Despite this, the central government is expected to have a buffer of around Rs 0.5 trillion from unutilised GST compensation cess funds. On the expenditure side, he said revenue expenditure is likely to be 2 per cent lower than budget estimates, while capital expenditure is expected to be close to 100 per cent of the budgeted amount. As a result, the fiscal deficit target is still achievable, with the shortfall in tax revenues likely to be offset by savings on the expenditure side, he added.
