2026 assembly elections: Survive or revive? Congress's alliance dilemma in states

NEW DELHI: The Congress is gearing up for the latest round of electoral challenges in 2026. With assembly elections due in four key states – Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, as well as one Union Territory, Puducherry – there is a lot at stake for the grand old party. The Congress is the principal challenger to the ruling dispensation in Kerala and Assam, while in Tamil Nadu, it will try to win a second term along with its ally, the DMK.2025 was a disastrous year for the Congress electorally. It could not open its account in the Delhi assembly elections, while it was reduced to its lowest score in Bihar. So, will 2026 see a change in the electoral fortunes of the Congress? Well, it all depends on how the grand-old party negotiates with its “grand-old problems.” And one of the biggest problems of the Congress in recent times has been its dilemma over alliances. The party, which successfully ran two coalition governments at the Centre between 2004 and 2014, has been struggling to get its alliance arithmetic right ever since it was pushed out of the ‘centre’stage of Indian politics by the BJP in 2014. A string of electoral defeats and the simultaneous winning spree of the BJP forced the Congress to join hands with parties that were once its political opponents in several states. And this perhaps explains why the grand-old party struggles when it comes to forming alliances. While on the one hand, the Congress wants to use coalitions to stay politically relevant, on the other, it also does not want to cede much space to the regional partners to ensure that it does not lose its political ground and influence. Torn between these two objectives, the Congress often finds itself juggling between “bullying”, “blackmailing” and “bargaining” to stitch alliances. 2026 is unlikely to be any different, as the initial developments show. In Tamil Nadu, the Congress seems to be flexing its muscles with the DMK, with which it has had a stable alliance for a very long time, but is not part of the state government.Congress MP Manickam Tagore had set the stage for this arm-twisting earlier this week when he said that alliances remain the political reality in Tamil Nadu and the time has come to move beyond seat-sharing and initiate discussions on the sharing of power.

.

However, with his statement leading to speculations on the future of the alliance, Manickam Tagore was quick to do damage control and said: “Tamil Nadu is an important state, and we all know that the INDIA alliance is a significant alliance, with Congress being a part of it and the DMK as its major partner. We have contested eight elections together, as the DMK is a long-term ally of Congress.” Tagore’s remark was the second time that a Tamil Nadu Congress leader had spoken of the party joining the state government. Months ago, Killiyoor MLA S Rajeshkumar had said that the party legislators and office bearers would urge the All India Congress Committee to persuade the DMK to accept “coalition government” and allot more seats to the party. So, is the Congress-DMK alliance really under strain? Or is the Congress trying to use pressure tactics to renegotiate its position within the alliance? The emergence of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) under Vijay as the third regional player in the state’s politics has made the game of alliances in the state interesting. Vijay has had a growing political presence in Tamil Nadu politics and the public response to his meetings and rallies has been impressive. The TVK chief has made it clear that he will not join hands either with the “corrupt” DMK or the “communal” BJP. While the party has kept the alliance cards close to its chest, a comment by its national spokesperson Felix Gerald triggered speculations about its preferences.“The Congress and TVK are natural allies in terms of secularism and their stand against communalism. In that sense, we have always been natural partners. Rahul Gandhi and our leader are also friends,” Gerald had said.Later, when senior Congress leader and head of the party’s Data Analytics Unit, Praveen Chakravarty, met TVK leader Vijay, it added fuel to the fire. While Chakravarty called the meeting personal, it did little to help end the speculations. The Congress perhaps wants to use Vijay’s TVK to increase its bargaining power vis-a-vis the DMK. But it should be careful of the flip side of these pressure tactics. History is replete with instances when Congress has suffered due to its botched alliance experiments. The most recent example is Bihar, where the Congress and the RJD could not come to an agreement on seat sharing even after the date for filing of nominations for the first phase was over. The fallout of this was that when RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav went to file his nomination papers, no Congress leader was by his side. Though the allies did manage to come to an agreement eventually, it was perhaps too late for them to pose any real challenge to the NDA.In Madhya Pradesh, the Congress refused to give seats to the Samajwadi Party, leading to an open war of words between the two parties. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had then reacted strongly to the Congress’s move. However, the two parties eventually managed to iron out differences and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in alliance in Uttar Pradesh. In Delhi, the Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP have been in and out of alliance several times. While they contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together, in the last assembly elections, they went all out against each other. Analysis of the results later showed that Congress played a key role in the defeat of AAP at the hands of the BJP, facilitating its return to power.

.

In Maharashtra, the Congress has walked out of the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi and is contesting the civic polls alone. This was after the Thackeray brothers decided to join hands for the BMC polls and also the NCP factions scripted a union of sorts. In West Bengal, which also goes to polls in a few months, the Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress are allies at the national level under the INDIA bloc, but are bitter political rivals in the state. The two parties have made several unsuccessful attempts to reach an understanding. The ruling Trinamool accuses the Congress, which has been literally wiped out in the state, of being unreasonable in its demand for seats. The Congress, on the other hand, argues that complete surrender to Trinamool would mean that the doors for the party’s possible revival in future are closed forever.

.

Clearly, in many of these states, the Congress seems to be stuck between the devil and the deep sea in terms of its choices. The party’s first predicament is to decide if it wants an alliance or wants to contest alone to start the process of revival. Once it decides on an alliance, the priority shifts to safeguarding its long-term interests by not conceding too much to the regional partner. This often results in protracted bargaining, bullying and even blackmailing. And at the end of all this, more often than not, the Congress ends up having egg on its face. So, the question is: Has the Congress learnt its alliance lessons? Well, we will have answers in the next few months.

NAVI MUMBAI: India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru pace-bowling all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar has been ruled out for at least two weeks of the ongoing Women’s Premier League due to a hamstring injury. The 26-year-old, who last played a competitive game in the T20 World Cup in October 2024, was brought for Rs 85 lakh during the Women’s Premier League auction in November last year, and the WPL was supposed to be her comeback.

Shubman Gill press conference: Breaks silence on T20 World Cup snub, and more on his future

“Pooja Vastrakar was not available for selection (against Mumbai Indians),” , the franchise’s head coach Malolan Rangarajan said after the team’s opening match here on Friday.“Two weeks prior to her release from the CoE (Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru), she unfortunately tweaked her hamstring. The information that we have is that she will be there for two weeks more.“Earlier, she was there (at the CoE) for her shoulder, now she has a hamstring issue. It’s a week by week process. So let’s see where she is at.”RCB, riding on an all-round display by South African stalwart Nadine de Klerk, defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians by three wickets in a last-ball thriller on Friday.De Klerk returned with excellent bowling figures of 4/26 and then blasted 63 off 44 to chase down a target of 155.In absence of Pooja, RCB handed the responsibility of bowling to new recruits — England left-arm spinner Linsey Smith, Arundhati Reddy and de Klerk as they managed to keep the opponents to 154-6.Chasing the total, RCB were in a spot of bother when they were reduced to 65 for 5 but de Klerk successfully anchored the chase.“The value of all-rounders came to the fore. My blood pressure, everything is okay. I’ve gotten used to this. I’ve been with RCB for six years. Very good to be on the winning side,” Rangarajan said.Heaping praise on de Klerk, the coach said: “Nadine was very clear with her plan, how she was going to approach the next 11 overs. That’s the first time I met her inside [at the strategic time out] was over (number) nine.“She wanted to chase down upwards of eight (runs per over) in the last four and then there was a plan of how to approach the next two overs in blocks. Aru (Reddy) also did a very, very good job (with the bat, scoring 20 off 25 in a sixth-wicket partnership of 52 off 51).”For Mumbai Indians, Hayley Matthews missed out as she is recovering from a shoulder injury, head coach Lisa Keightley said.“Unfortunately, her shoulder isn’t great. While training, she got a slight strain and she’s really close (to play),” Keightley said.“It was a bit too close for her to play tonight. We will see how she goes tomorrow, and if she’s fit for tomorrow’s game. But she is really close.”The defending champions Mumbai Indians will face Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the DY Patil Stadium, while RCB will face UP Warriorz Women on Monday.

Digital payments push: PhonePe PG rolls out ‘Bolt’ for Visa, Mastercard cards; enables one-click in-app checkout

Digital payments push: PhonePe PG rolls out ‘Bolt’ for Visa, Mastercard cards; enables one-click in-app checkout

PhonePe Payment Gateway on Saturday launched ‘PhonePe PG Bolt’ for Visa and Mastercard credit and debit card transactions, aiming to offer a faster and more secure in-app checkout experience for users and merchants, PTI reported. The solution uses device tokenisation to enable secure payments within apps for users on the PhonePe platform as well as merchant partners, the company said in a statement.Yuvraj Singh Shekhawat, Chief Business Officer of Merchant Business at PhonePe, said the launch of PhonePe PG Bolt for Visa and Mastercard marks an important milestone in the company’s efforts to simplify digital payments.“By leveraging device tokenization, we will enable users and merchants to move away from the traditional, cumbersome checkout process to a secure, one-click payment experience. This not only enhances user convenience but also empowers our merchant partners to maximize their growth through industry-best success rates and reduced drop-offs,” he said.Under the new feature, users can tokenize their Visa and Mastercard cards once on the PhonePe app and subsequently use the saved cards across all merchants integrated with PhonePe PG, eliminating the need to tokenize cards separately for each merchant.By replacing sensitive card details with secure tokens, the system removes the requirement for CVV entry for repeat transactions on the same device, the statement said. The architecture also streamlines the payment flow by reducing the number of steps involved, keeping users within the merchant’s app throughout the transaction and avoiding redirection to external pages. The company said merchants using PhonePe’s native SDK can benefit from higher transaction success rates and faster checkout speeds, driven by the elimination of manual card entry and fewer technical hand-offs between payment entities.“This efficiency is driven by the elimination of manual card entry and the reduction of technical hand-offs between payment entities. Additionally, the solution provides merchants with a customizable interface that integrates directly into their existing app flow, helping maintain brand consistency while reducing transaction drop-offs,” the statement said.

ICE shooter Jonathan Ross has an immigrant Filipina wife; father says deceased Renee Good hit first

Jonathan Ross, the 43-year-old ICE agent who shot Minneapolis woman Renee Good and killed her, was not at fault, his father said. The outrage against the ICE and its absence of restraint while handling civilians centers around Ross but his father Ed Ross told Daily Mail that Ross did nothing wrong and he will not be charged. “You would never find a nicer, kinder person,” the father added about his son. “He’s a committed, conservative Christian, a tremendous father, a tremendous husband. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”The father said Renee Good hit him.The Department of Homeland Security stood by the ICE officer and said Good was trying to mow him down. But different angles of the video emerged with many claiming that Good was trying to turn away the vehicle and was not going to attack anyone. Good’s family members also claimed she was not an activist and had no reason to be there. Contradictory reports came from some eyewitnesses who claimed that Good and her partner were acting as legal observers. They said they were filming the protest when she was shot. Many concluded from the video that Good panciked and lost control of her car when she was asked to move. She slammed it into parked cars and a light pole at high speed.

Jonathan Ross married to immigrant Filipina wife

The Daily Mail report claimed that Jonathan Ross is married to an immigrant wife whose parents live in the Philippines. Ross’s father said his son’s wife is a US citizen but declined to say how long she had been in the US. Ross, believed to be a MAGA supporter, has lived on the outskirts of Minneapolis since 2015, and served as an immigration officer since at least 2013.One neighbor said Ross, until recently, had been flying pro-Trump flags and a ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ Gadsden Flag, an emblem of the Make America Great Again movement. They were not spotted at the home after the controversial shooting.

MUMBAI: In a fresh twist to the political drama in Ambernath municipal council, a day after 12 suspended Congress councillors joined BJP, all four councillors from NCP withdrew support to the BJP-led front and backed Shiv Sena. BMC Becomes Mega Battleground As Thackerays Reunite And Alliances Shift Ahead Of Civic Wars 2026

It is a setback to BJP’s attempt to gain a majority by first securing the support of 12 Congress and 4 NCP councillors and then taking the Congress councillors into its fold.BJP had won the direct election to the post of the council president, but will now have to share power with Sena as key positions such as those of deputy president and chairpersons of local committees are expected to go to Sena and NCP, political observers said. Sena, BJP and NCP contested separately. in the polls held last month.Ambernath has traditionally been a Shiv Sena stronghold and is also considered the bastion of Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, son of deputy CM Eknath Shinde. BJP state president Ravindra Chavan and party MLA Kishan Kathore had made strong efforts to dislodge the Sena from office in these elections. While BJP succeeded in winning the council president’s post with its candidate Tejashri Karanjule coming on top, the party could get only 15 councillors. On the other hand, though the Sena’s candidate for president lost, the party emerged as the single largest by winning 27 seats. To maintain control of the civic body, the BJP brought together 12 Congress councillors, four from NCP, and one independent, forming a 32-member alliance named the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi. The group was formally registered with the Thane collector, and BJP councillor Abhijit Karanjule was appointed as group leader. However, BJP faced criticism for aligning with Congress, which suspended its councillors, leading all 12 to formally join BJP.

“Both leaders provided guidance to negotiating teams to resolve pending issues and expedite the agreement,” the commerce ministry said. The discussions focused on reviewing progress achieved in key areas of the negotiations, including Market Access for Goods, Rules of Origin and Services, the statement added. The ministerial engagement followed high-level consultations between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and European Commission Director-General for Trade Sabine Weyand, which were held on January 6 and 7, 2026.According to the statement, officials from both sides worked to “narrow divergences” and bring greater clarity on unresolved matters, helping clear the way for the ministerial-level dialogue.“The ministerial-level discussions reaffirmed the strong political resolve on either side to address pending issues through constructive engagement,” it said. The deliberations assume significance as India and the European Union are seeking to conclude the negotiations at the earliest, the statement added.

I-PAC raids: ED moves SC over ‘interference’ from Mamata govt, Bengal files counter-petition caveat; HC hearing pushed to Jan 14 | India News

I-PAC raids: ED moves SC over 'interference' from Mamata govt, Bengal files counter-petition caveat; HC hearing pushed to Jan 14

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday moved the Supreme Court alleging interference and obstruction by the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government during search operations at the Kolkata headquarters of political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee(I-PAC) and the residence of its director Pratik Jain. Meanwhile, the state government filed a caveat seeking to be heard before any adverse order is passed. The Bengal government’s caveat was filed after the ED carried out searches on Thursday at I-PAC’s office and Jain’s residence as part of a money laundering probe linked to an alleged multi-crore rupee coal pilferage scam. A caveat allows a party to ensure that no order is issued without giving it an opportunity to present its case.

‘Agar Himmat Hay Toh…’: Mamata Banerjee Explodes After ED Raids I-PAC, Challenges HM Amit Shah

The ED has alleged that chief minister Mamata Banerjee entered the raid locations and took away what it described as “key” evidence, including physical documents and electronic devices. Banerjee has rejected the allegations and accused the central agency of overreach. On Friday, the ED approached the Calcutta high court seeking judicial intervention, accusing the state police, allegedly acting in collusion with the chief minister, of obstructing its officials during the January 8 search operation. In its writ petition, the agency said the police failed to discharge their public duty in “flagrant and blatant disregard to law” and prevented ED officers from exercising their powers under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.The Calcutta high court adjourned the hearing in the ED versus Trinamool Congress matter till January 14, 2026, citing an unconducive atmosphere in the courtroom due to heavy congestion caused by the presence of a large number of lawyers. In its 28-page petition, the ED alleged that the situation escalated after the Chief Minister entered the residential premises of Pratik Jain during the search and removed incriminating material. The agency said it had invoked the High Court’s writ jurisdiction to “instil public confidence” in the functioning of the state administration and to immediately stop what it termed as “overreach” by the state police and the Chief Minister. The raids and subsequent court proceedings sparked sharp political reactions. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal unit questioned the role of I-PAC in the functioning of the state government after Banerjee said the firm was an authorised team of the All India Trinamool Congress. In a post on X, BJP West Bengal said, “Mamata Banerjee said that IPAC is in charge of Trinamool. It is their internal matter if they want a private agency to run the party and decide tickets and organisational positions. But what were Government of West Bengal documents doing in the IPAC office? Is IPAC intervening in the functioning of the West Bengal government?”Calling it a constitutional issue, the BJP alleged that bureaucrats appeared to be reporting to a private agency and demanded clarification from the chief minister. “This is a direct challenge to the Constitution, where the bureaucracy appears to be reporting to a private agency. In the past also, we have seen emails sent by bureaucrats to IPAC employees to decide the campaign of the West Bengal government. Mamata Banerjee is accountable to the people of West Bengal and should clarify whether an agency from outside the state, staffed by people from other states, is intervening in the functioning of the government,” the post said.Earlier on Friday, several Trinamool Congress MPs were detained in New Delhi while protesting outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s office against the ED raid on the I-PAC office. Condemning the detentions, Banerjee described the action as “shameful and unacceptable” in a post on X, accusing the BJP of “double standards” in its treatment of protests by ruling party leaders and opposition MPs.

R Praggnanandhaa's chess controversy: American GM Wesley So clarifies incident - 'Things happened so fast'

NEW DELHI: American Grandmaster Wesley So clarified the confusion around his controversial game against R Praggnanandhaa at the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid. He said that the draw was suggested by him, not by the arbiters. Explaining the tense moment on Friday, So wrote on X: “Regarding my game with Pragg yesterday, I was the one who proposed to draw the game, not the arbiters. Things happened so fast and everyone did what seems best at the moment. Criticizing the arbiters are uncalled for. Big congrats to Nihal Sarin for dominating the rapid!”

The incident took place on Thursday during Day 2 of the tournament in Kolkata. Round 6 suddenly became the centre of attention due to a dramatic turn of events. Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa was low on time and had only one second left on his clock. He pushed a pawn close to promotion but quickly realised he did not have enough time to complete the move and replace it with a new queen. As his time was about to expire, Pragg stopped the clock and asked for help. Many commentators felt Wesley So would win the game on time. However, after a discussion, the arbiters declared the game a draw. This decision sparked strong debate across the chess world.Renowned chess arbiter Chris Bird openly criticised the ruling. On X, he wrote: “Should have been ruled a loss. “6.11.2 A player may pause the chessclock only in order to seek the arbiter’s assistance, for example when promotion has taken place and the piece required is not available.” No promotion actually took place so this is not relevant here.”Young Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid title on Saturday. His victory came just a day after the passing of his maternal grandfather, who had introduced him to the game of 64 squares.Nihal secured the Open title in Round 9 with a calm draw against five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand. He finished first with 6.5 points. Anand came second with six points, while Arjun Erigaisi finished third with five points. After his win, Nihal said: “Yesterday night I got the news that my maternal grandfather who taught me chess, had passed away. I would like to dedicate this tournament victory to him,”In the women’s section, Russia’s Kateryna Lagno won the title with 6.5 points. Aleksandra Goryachkina finished second, while 2025 Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh claimed third place.
