Ajit’s swag matched his penchant for discipline | India News

Ajit’s swag matched his penchant for discipline

Precision of appearance, strict personal habits and a penchant for cleanliness set Ajit Pawar apart from his contemporaries. He was a workaholic whose personality, beyond politics, stood out for his discipline and exacting preferences. The NCP chief was known to be choosy about what he wore — especially sunglasses. The brands varied from the Maybach collection to Ray Ban. He was picky about watches and clothes. He changed his look according to the occasion. While he would don safari suits during assembly sessions, he turned formal when he visited Delhi to meet the PM. Waking up at dawn was what Pawars had been taught, Ajit said in an interview. “The word lazy is missing from our dictionary. We don’t believe in afternoon naps,” he added.

NEW DELHI: Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav spoke openly after his team suffered a 50-run defeat against New Zealand in the fourth T20 International on Wednesday. Despite the loss, Suryakumar said the match was part of a bigger plan as the team looked to test itself in pressure situations ahead of the World Cup.India chose to chase after winning the toss, even though they have enjoyed success while batting first in recent matches.

Inside details of Washington Sundar’s recovery at BCCI CoE | Why India are patient | T20 World Cup

Suryakumar explained that the decision was taken to push the batters and make them take responsibility while chasing big totals.“I feel we purposely played six batters today. We wanted to have five perfect bowlers and wanted to challenge ourselves. Like for example, if we’re chasing 200 or 180, and we wanted to see if we were two down or three down, how does it look? But then it’s fine at the end of the day. And we wanted to play all the players who are part of the World Cup squad. Otherwise, we would have played other ones,” he said in the post-match presentation. He added that the team wanted to test its ability while batting second. “We’ve been batting really well when we’ve batted first. So I wanted the guys to take that responsibility if we’re chasing 180 or 200, and two wickets or three wickets are down and see how we bat. So it’s a good challenge. Hopefully if we get an opportunity again, we might chase again. But at the end of the day, good learning,” Suryakumar added.New Zealand made full use of the batting conditions and posted 215 for seven. Tim Seifert scored a quick 62, and Devon Conway added 44 as the visitors raced to 100 in just over eight overs. India fought back later as Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each. Daryl Mitchell then gave New Zealand a late boost with an unbeaten 39 off 18 balls.India’s chase never fully settled despite a strong counterattack. Shivam Dube smashed 65 off 23 balls, while Rinku Singh made 39. However, wickets kept falling, and India were bowled out for 165 in 18.4 overs. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner starred with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 26.

‘Not an act of war’: Marco Rubio defends Venezuela operation at Senate hearing — what he said

‘Not an act of war’: Marco Rubio defends Venezuela operation at Senate hearing — what he said

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, defending the Trump administration’s recent military actions in Venezuela and explaining the US posture on Iran.Rubio said the US operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was not an act of war and stressed that Washington does not plan further military action in the country. “We are not postured and do not expect to take military action,” he told lawmakers, adding that additional strikes could harm long-term efforts to stabilise Venezuela and support a democratic transition. He also addressed Iran, saying there is no current plan to attack the country, even as the US increases its military presence in the Middle East. Rubio described the buildup as “wise and prudent” to protect American personnel and facilities from potential Iranian threats. His comments came as President Donald Trump again warned Tehran of a “far worse” attack if it does not abandon its nuclear ambitions.Rubio cautioned that regime change in Iran would be “far more complex” than in Venezuela, noting the longevity of Iran’s leadership and the need for careful consideration. The hearing also touched on Ukraine, with Rubio saying disagreements over territory remain a key obstacle in talks involving the US, Russia and Ukraine. He said Washington may need to provide a “security backstop” for any future agreement.Rubio further said the Trump administration would like to see a change in Cuba’s government but stopped short of saying the US would force such an outcome.“We would like to see that regime change, Rubio said, adding, “That doesn’t mean that we’re going to make a change, but we would love to see it change.”

Rupee slips to record low again, ends at 91.99 per dollar on month-end demand

Rupee slips to record low again, ends at 91.99 per dollar on month-end demand

The rupee on Wednesday depreciated 31 paise to close at an all-time low of 91.99 against the US dollar, marking the second instance in less than a week that the currency has settled at its weakest-ever level, pressured by heightened month-end demand for the greenback and lingering geopolitical concerns, traders said.At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened on a firmer note at 91.60 and touched an early high of 91.50, tracking a softer US dollar index and some optimism after a long-awaited trade breakthrough with Europe. However, it surrendered all gains as demand for dollars picked up toward month-end, sliding to an intraday low of 91.99.The domestic currency thus revisited its lowest-ever closing level of 91.99, a level it had earlier hit on January 23, when it also touched an all-time intraday low of 92 against the dollar. On Tuesday, the rupee had staged a brief recovery, gaining 22 paise to close at 91.68.Forex analysts said early support came from easing dollar strength and positive sentiment following the announcement that India and the European Union had concluded negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA). Under the pact, several Indian sectors such as apparel, chemicals and footwear are expected to gain duty-free access to the EU market, while the bloc will get concessional access to India for products such as cars and wines. The agreement has been dubbed the “mother of all deals”, creating a market of nearly 2 billion people.Despite the positive cues, sustained dollar demand and geopolitical tensions weighed on the rupee through the session. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was trading 0.07 per cent lower at 96.14. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, slipped 0.43 per cent to $67.28 per barrel in futures trade.Domestic equities provided some support, with the Sensex rising 487.20 points to 82,344.68 and the Nifty climbing 167.35 points to 25,342.75. Foreign institutional investors turned net buyers, purchasing shares worth Rs 480.26 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data.
