Ravi Varma’s ‘Yashoda & Krishna’ fetches record-shattering Rs 167 crore | India News

For the Indian art market, a big shot in the arm has come from Cyrus S Poonawalla, industrialist and founder of Serum Institute of India. His landmark price for Raja Ravi Varma’s painting Yashoda and Krishna has made it the most expensive work of modern Indian art ever sold at auction, fetching Rs 167.2 crore ($18 million approx) after an intense bidding war at a Saffronart sale. This price eclipses the record held by M F Husain’s Untitled (Gram Yatra), which sold for over Rs 118cr last year to Delhi-based Kiran Nadar.Poonawalla called the acquisition both a privilege and a responsibility. “This national treasure deserves to be made available for public viewing periodically,” he said, “and it will be my endeavour to facilitate this.”Born in 1848 into an aristocratic family in the princely state of Travancore, Varma is best known for his fusion of European technique with an Indian sensibility. Beyond the canvas, he set up alithographic press in 1894 to mass-produce his paintings as affordable prints, bringing Hindu iconography into the homes of ordinary Indians for the first time. His images of the gods remain so embedded in popular consciousness that they still shape how millions of Indians picture their deities today.

Varma’s work sells for double the estimate

Painted in the 1890s, at the height of Varma’s powers, ‘Yashoda and Krishna’ renders a tender, layered portrait of maternal love through the mythological figures of infant Krishna and his foster mother Yashoda. One of the artist’s most celebrated compositions, the painting, acquired by Cyrus S Poonawalla , had carried a pre-sale estimate of Rs 80 crore to Rs 120 crore — a figure the final hammer price more than doubled.Saffronart president and co-founder Minal Vazirani called it a defining moment. “…This is not just a milestone for the market — it is a powerful reminder of the enduring cultural and emotional resonance of Indian art,” he said.

SRH vs KKR, IPL 2026: Probable playing XI for Match 6, Eden Gardens IPL Stats and Records

The spotlight shifts to an exciting clash in IPL 2026 as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday (April 2). With both teams searching for their first win, this encounter already carries added pressure despite being just the sixth match of the season.

KKR head into this game after a frustrating loss to Mumbai Indians (MI), where their batting brilliance was overshadowed by bowling struggles. Posting a massive 220, the team looked in control, thanks to aggressive starts from Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane, followed by a powerful knock from Cameron Green. However, their inability to defend such a big total exposed serious concerns in the death overs. Injuries to key Indian pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, along with the absence of Matheesha Pathirana, have further weakened their bowling attack. As a result, KKR will rely heavily on Vaibhav Arora, overseas fast bowlers, and their spin unit to deliver under pressure.

SRH find themselves in a similar situation after losing their opener to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Despite posting an impressive 201/9, SRH failed to contain a strong RCB batting lineup. Captain Ishan Kishan led from the front with a blazing 80 off 38 balls, supported well by Aniket Verma. Yet again, SRH’s recurring issue of closing out high-scoring matches came to the fore.

SRH vs KKR, IPL 2026: Probable playing XI of both teams

Kolkata Knight Riders: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wk), Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Sunil Narine, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy, Kartik Tyagi, Blessing Muzarabani

Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth’s ‘back to the Stone Age’ threat to Iran draws swift consulate response

Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth’s 'back to the Stone Age' threat to Iran draws swift consulate response

US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned that Iran would be hit “extremely hard” over the next two to three weeks, saying US action would “bring them back to the Stone Age” as the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States continues to deepen and tensions soar in the Middle East.“We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We are going to bring them back to the stone ages, where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing,” Trump said in an address to the nation. He also stated that Washington’s action against the Islamic Republic is “on the cusp” of ending what he described as Tehran’s “sinister threat” to the US and the world.

Mohammed Shami scripts IPL history, sets big record despite LSG defeat | Cricket News

Mohammed Shami scripts IPL history, sets big record despite LSG defeat

NEW DELHI: Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami continued to make a strong statement, even as Lucknow Super Giants slumped to a six-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2026 season opener at the Ekana Stadium on Wednesday.Shami, who has been out of the national setup for over a year, struck with the very first ball of the Capitals’ chase, dismissing KL Rahul for a golden duck. In doing so, he etched his name into the record books, becoming the first bowler in IPL history to claim five first-ball wickets — a feat unmatched in the tournament’s 18-year history. He finished with tidy figures of 1 for 28 in four overs, once again underlining his rhythm and control despite LSG’s overall struggles. His early strike set the tone as LSG reduced Delhi to 26 for 4, but the advantage slipped away soon after.Earlier ahead of the match, Shami had made it clear that retirement is far from his mind. Speaking recently, the 35-year-old reiterated that he would only step away from the game when he feels “bored,” not due to age, injuries or selection snubs. “The day I feel lazy or bored, I will quit. But I am neither bored nor lazy. I am enjoying the game,” he said, reaffirming his hunger.

Most first-ball wicket in IPL

  • 5 – Mohammed Shami
  • 3 – Pravin Kumar
  • 3 – Umesh Yadav
  • 3 – Trent Boult
  • 3 – Lasith Malinga
  • 3 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  • 3 – Ashok Dinda
  • 3 – Pat Cummins

Despite his efforts, LSG could not capitalise. A fighting unbeaten 70 from Sameer Rizvi, alongside Tristan Stubbs (39), saw Delhi Capitals recover from early trouble and chase down 142 with ease.LSG’s problems began earlier in the evening with a disappointing batting display. Contributions were hard to come by as DC’s bowlers, led by Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan, dismantled the lineup to restrict them to 141 in 18.4 overs. While the result did not go in their favour, Shami’s milestone and continued form offered a significant positive for LSG. As questions remain over his absence from the Indian side, the veteran pacer is letting his performances do the talking — and history is taking note.

Centre grants full customs duty exemption on critical petrochemical products amid Middle East crisis: Check list

Centre grants full customs duty exemption on critical petrochemical products amid Middle East crisis: Check list

As energy supply disruptions due to the ongoing Middle East conflict stretch into a second month, the government has moved to cushion the impact on domestic industries by granting a full customs duty exemption on select critical petrochemical products, providing much-needed short-term relief. The decision, which will be applicable until June 30, will address supply chain challenges and ensure that essential petrochemical inputs remain available for industrial use across the country.“This measure has been taken as a temporary and targeted relief in order to ensure continued availability of critical petrochemical inputs for domestic industry, reduce cost pressures on downstream sectors, and safeguard supply stability in the country,” the statement read. The government described the move as a targeted and time-bound measure, aimed towards at easing cost pressures faced by downstream sectors while maintaining stability in supplies. The exemption is expected to support industries that rely heavily on petrochemical feedstock and intermediates.Sectors likely to gain from the decision include plastics, packaging, textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive components, along with other manufacturing segments that depend on such inputs for production. The relief is also expected to extend to end consumers, as lower input costs may help reduce the burden on final product prices. Here’s a list of products set to benefit from the exemption:

Earlier, the Centre had moved to cushion both consumers and oil companies from the sharp rise in crude prices, up 62% this month compared to February for Indian refiners, by cutting excise duty, a decision expected to create a revenue shortfall of Rs 1.3 lakh crore for the exchequer.

“Hard to sit this one out…”: Former CSK star roots for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 despite playing in Pakistan Super League

In a season where allegiances are usually defined by the jersey on one’s back, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stalwart has proven that the ‘Yellow Fever’ is a difficult habit to break. Currently representing Islamabad United in the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL), the New Zealand opener found himself caught between two worlds this Tuesday. Despite being miles away in Pakistan, left handed batter’s focus remained firmly on a bruising encounter in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where his former side suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals.

Ex-CSK player continues his unwavering loyalty for his franchise

Devon Conway’s journey with Chennai is the stuff of IPL folklore. Between 2022 and 2025, the South African-born Kiwi became a linchpin of the CSK top order, most notably spearheading their 2023 title charge with a staggering 672 runs and a Player of the Match performance in the final. However, the unpredictable nature of the sport saw him released after a lacklustre 2025 campaign and subsequently going unsold in the IPL 2026 auction.

Now wearing the red of Islamabad United, Conway’s maiden PSL campaign has been a mixed bag, featuring a modest 26-run debut against Multan Sultans and a frustrating washout against Peshawar Zalmi. Yet, it was the result of the CSK vs. RR clash that prompted an emotional outburst on social media. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Conway admitted it was “hard to sit this one out,” adding that seeing the Super Kings lose ‘hurts.’ Even while “locked in” with PSL duties, his warning that “revenge at Chepauk will always be on my mind” sent CSK fans into a nostalgic frenzy, proving that once you whistle podu, you never really stop.

A tough start for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s men amidst injury woes in IPL 2026

While Conway watched from afar, the reality on the ground for Chennai Super Kings was grim. Facing the Rajasthan Royals, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side looked a shadow of their former dominant selves. The batting lineup crumbled under pressure, collapsing to a meagre 127 all out. If not for a gritty 43 from Brydon Carse, the embarrassment could have been far worse. The chase was a mere formality for Rajasthan, fueled by a sensational 15-ball half-century from 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who dismantled the CSK attack to seal an eight-wicket victory.

The loss highlights a growing crisis for the five-time champions. The absence of the legendary MS Dhoni, officially ruled out for at least two weeks due to a calf injury, has left a leadership and finishing void that Sanju Samson, ironically playing against his former team and Gaikwad are struggling to fill. As CSK prepares to host the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings on April 3, the pressure is mounting. Fans are now looking toward the potential return of Dewald Brevis to provide the spark that Conway once ignited. For now, however, the Men in Yellow must find their rhythm without their iconic former opener, who remains their biggest cheerleader from across the border.
