Goa club blaze: Luthras booked Thailand tickets as fire raged; manhunt on

NEW DELHI: Goa police said the brothers purchased seats on a Phuket-bound flight at 1.17 am on December 7, even as firefighters and local authorities were struggling to contain the flames and rescue staff at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa. By 5.30 am, they were airborne on IndiGo flight 6E-1073. Goa DGP Alok Kumar described their rapid exit as “a clear attempt to evade investigation.”In the days since, the brothers have approached a Delhi court seeking four weeks of transit anticipatory bail, claiming they left for Thailand for work purposes, not to slip away from the law. Filing their plea in Rohini court on Wednesday, they asserted through their counsel, “We want to come back,” and said they do not handle the nightclub’s daily operations.A beach shack owned by the brothers — who also run the Arpora club — is now set to be demolished, according to reports citing Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant.Despite their departure, Saurabh posted a message online expressing “profound grief” and “unwavering solidarity” with families of the victims. Soon after, the Bureau of Immigration issued Look Out Circulars for both men.A Goa police team reached Delhi on Sunday with an arrest warrant and searched their homes and offices but found no trace of them. Immigration officials in Mumbai later confirmed they had already left India. The court, meanwhile, declined to grant them interim relief and listed their anticipatory bail plea for Thursday. The investigation in Goa is underway. Four staff members of Birch, chief general manager Rajiv Modak, gate manager Priyanshu Thakur, bar manager Rajveer Singhania, and general manager Vivek Singh, have been arrested and remanded to six days’ custody. Three suspended Goa government officials have also been summoned.

Smriti Mandhana breaks silence after wedding cancelled: ‘I don’t think I love …’ | Cricket News

Smriti Mandhana breaks silence after wedding cancelled: 'I don’t think I love ...'

Smriti Mandhana says one truth has become clearer to her than anything else over the past 12 years — there is nothing she cares about more deeply than cricket. India’s most accomplished left-handed batter in women’s cricket looked back on her journey, from her international debut in 2013 to helping India lift the World Cup last month, while speaking at the Amazon Smbhav Summit on Wednesday.

Smriti Mandhana’s Close Friend, Radha Unfollows Palash Muchhal Amid Cheating Controversy!

Mandhana spoke openly about what fuels her commitment each day. “I don’t think there is anything I love more than cricket. Putting on the India jersey is the biggest motivation. No matter what you’re going through, that one thought helps you block everything out,” she said. Even as a child, she knew exactly what she wanted. “The obsession with batting was always there. People around me didn’t really get it, but in my head I wanted only one thing — to be known as a world champion.” She described the World Cup win as the result of years of hard work and disappointment. “This trophy was the outcome of everything we’ve been fighting for. I’ve played for more than a decade, and so many times things didn’t fall into place. Before the final, we pictured that moment over and over again. When it finally appeared on the screen, it genuinely gave us goosebumps. It was emotional in every way.” The occasion was even more overwhelming with legends Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami watching from the stands. “We desperately wanted to win it for them too. Seeing tears in their eyes felt like the whole of women’s cricket had achieved something. It was a victory for everyone who came before us.” Mandhana shared the biggest lessons she carried from the triumph: “You always start from zero, regardless of what you scored previously. And never play for yourself — that’s something we kept telling one another.” This event also marked Mandhana’s first public appearance since she confirmed the cancellation of her wedding with musician Palash Muchhal.

Massive earthquake jolts Japan days after 7.5 tremors

Japan on Wednesday recorded another strong earthquake, the third in as many days, after a 6-magnitude tremor struck eastern Aomori and Hokkaido. No tsunami warning was issued, authorities said. The fresh jolt comes after a 7.6-magnitude quake on Monday and 6.7 tremors on Tuesday in Honchō. Monday’s earthquake injured 51 people so far, with the toll rising, according to AFP. The impact had been severe – shaking buildings, damaging roads, shattering windows and triggering tsunami waves up to 70 cm.Following the sequence of strong quakes, the JMA on Tuesday issued a rare “megaquake advisory”, warning of an increased probability of an even more powerful event – possibly magnitude 8 or higher – within the next week, as reported by the Associated Press. The agency said, “Due to the occurrence of this earthquake, it is believed that the relative likelihood of a new large-scale earthquake has increased compared to normal times”.

Residents in coastal regions were urged to remain vigilant, prepare emergency supplies and be ready to evacuate if needed. “If a large-scale earthquake occurs in the future, there is a possibility of a massive tsunami reaching the area or experiencing strong shaking,” the JMA cautioned. The agency added that Monday’s quake has heightened seismic stress along the Hokkaido–Sanriku coast, where the Pacific Plate slides beneath Japan – an area responsible for some of the country’s most powerful earthquakes, including the 2011 magnitude 9.0 megaquake, which was preceded two days earlier by a 7.3 tremor, a pattern similar to what is unfolding this week.(With inputs from agencies)

IND vs SA, 2nd T20I: Mullanpur Pitch Report, Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium Stats and Records

The 2nd T20I between India and South Africa is set to take place at the brand new Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. Following a decisive victory in the series opener, India carry a 1-0 lead and strong momentum into this crucial encounter. Their team is balanced and boasts several players in excellent form, spearheaded by their returning all-rounder. South Africa, on the other hand, will be under pressure to execute their plans better, particularly with the bat, and force a series-leveling win to keep the competition alive.

India: Riding the momentum with commanding win in the opening game

India come into this match with confidence, having secured a clinical all-round victory in the series opener. The returns of key players like Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill have instantly bolstered the squad. Pandya’s sensational return to international cricket, highlighted by a match-winning half-century and his contributions with the ball, gives India immense balance at number five. Gill, who returned to the side following injury, will be under the spotlight to find his rhythm in the shortest format.

South Africa: Searching for a response

The Proteas will be desperate to bounce back and level the series. Their T20 squad, led by Aiden Markram, features a mix of established hitters and young talent. The return of pace ace Anrich Nortje after a long injury lay-off is a huge boost, but they need their batting unit to fire collectively. The combination of Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen offers serious heat, but they must execute their plans better in the powerplay and at the death against a powerful Indian batting lineup.

Spinners are expected to come into play as the match progresses, particularly in the later half of the innings. Overall, the pitch is likely to assist batters more than bowlers.

'First Nehru, then Indira and Sonia': Amit Shah lists three instances of 'vote chori' by Congress; triggers protest

NEW DLEHI: Home minister Amit Shah’s remarks during the Lok Sabha debate on election reforms sparked strong protests from Congress MPs on Wednesday, after he listed three instances across different eras in which he alleged the party engaged in “vote chori”, naming former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, and referring to a case involving Sonia Gandhi over voter registration.Shah countered the Opposition’s accusation of “vote theft” by citing what he described as “three phases” of electoral malpractice linked to the Congress, including a pending case in a Delhi court that, according to him, disputes whether Sonia Gandhi was registered as a voter before acquiring Indian citizenship.“ … when you’re not eligible, still you become a voter. A while back, a case was brought up in a Delhi court where the dispute is that Sonia Gandhi became a voter even before she became a citizen of the country,” the home minister said. “There are three instances of vote-chori, first when Jawaharlal Nehru became PM even after losing the vote to Sardar Patel to choose the country’s first PM … second when Indira Gandhi’s election from Rebareli was set aside in 1975 by Allahabad HC and to cover it up she brought in bill in Parliament to provide immunity to PM’s – that no case can be brought against the PMs … third, when you’re not eligible still you become a voter. A while back, a case was brought up in a Delhi court where the dispute is that Sonia Gandhi became a voter even before she became a citizen of the country,” he said. The opposition benches erupted, prompting Shah to respond, “I have just said what is a fact that there’s a case in court, Sonia ji needs to respond in court why they’re replying here?”Congress MP KC Venugopal raised a point of order, insisting the allegation was baseless. “The case from the 80s that was filed against Ms Sonia Gandhi, the Rouse Avenue court dismissed that case; there is no substance in that case. Ms Gandhi didn’t even vote in that election and I’m challenging HM, Ms Sonia Gandhi didn’t even vote in that election. Can you prove it otherwise? HM is making misleading statements,” he said.Shah clarified that he had drawn no conclusions and merely spoke a fact. “I haven’t said anything like that, I haven’t made any conclusion. The conclusion would come out once she responds to the court order, and then I’ll discuss it again. I only said, a case has been registered in which a notice has been issued to Ms Gandhi. What is there to be so angry about?”The heated exchange marked yet another flashpoint in the ongoing debate on electoral reforms in Parliament.
