Steve Smith ruled out? Australia captain issues official update on Boxing Day Test availability in Ashes

Australia‘s vice-captain Steve Smith has been cleared to play in the iconic Boxing Day Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, starting on December 26. Steve Smith also opened up about a “weird” episode of vestibular dysfunction that threatened his return and worsened during training in Adelaide.

Australia’s batting mainstay was troubled by vestibular issues that worsened over four days of training at the Adelaide Oval. Unlike previous bouts of vertigo, this time the problem was more severe, and eventually, he decided to withdraw from the third Ashes 2025-26 Test.

Steve Smith Reveals ‘Weird’ Health Scare, As He Cleared for Boxing Day Test Return

Australian vice-captain struggled to pick up the ball early, felt heavy in the head, was unable to focus properly, and became unusually exhausted after even short training sessions. Each time he lifted his head to face a delivery, his vision felt out of sync.

The symptoms intensified despite repeated attempts to train. Batting sessions, light activity, and even a game of golf left him feeling worse. Later, Smith underwent medical checkups that required him to wear vestibular goggles to help doctors better identify the source of his problems.

The right-handed batter was given a strict recovery plan involving eye-tracking drills, laser-guided exercises, balance control, and neck-strengthening exercises. The seasoned batter has a history of head knocks and balance-related issues, but this episode was different and stunned him.

I Was a Bit Worried”: Steve Smith’s Vestibular Battle

Now, Smith has been cleared to play at the MCG, and he has also shut down rumors of a net-session concussion and confirmed the issue was purely vestibular. The Australian vice-captain was quoted as saying by The Age: “I’ve had a few different things with my head in the past—head knocks, some vestibular stuff, some vertigo stuff. It was more the vestibular stuff this time.”

Smith further explained, “I’m still talking to people about it. I’ve got some training exercises I need to do, tracking things, wearing goggles with a laser on them, drawing different shapes, and things like that. So, it’ll be a bit of that, strengthening my neck. Fingers crossed it’s gone and never comes back. That would be nice.”

The Aussie star also revealed that the eye black he used in the day-night Test in Brisbane will now be something he keeps using regularly in his kit. He shared, “The black things I was wearing under my eyes, I’m 100 percent certain they worked, and I think I’ll be bringing them out in normal night games against the white ball as well.”

Steve Smith also defended England head coach Brendon McCullum’s “overpreparing” remark that he made after losing the first two Tests Down Under. The veteran batter explained that he has reduced the amount of training he does to keep his body fresh.

He signed off by saying, “I think sometimes, particularly when you lose, you almost try too much and too hard, and you lose sight of the fact that you want to be mentally fresh when you go in the middle. Sometimes you just try too hard to get yourself into that frame of mind, and you’re actually cooked when you go out to the middle to try to perform under pressure. I’ve learned that over time.”

SFIO probes IndusInd’s Rs 1,960 crore derivatives hole

SFIO probes IndusInd’s Rs 1,960 crore derivatives hole

MUMBAI: Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) has opened a formal probe into IndusInd Bank after a Dec 23, 2025 letter triggered an investigation under the Companies Act, 2013, over accounting lapses tied to internal derivative trades. In a filing, the bank said SFIO, under the MCA, seeks information after the lender flagged on June 2 issues spanning internal derivatives, unsubstantiated “other assets/liabilities”, and microfinance interest/fee income. It disclosed the update on Dec 18, pledged full cooperation, and posted details on its website.Derivatives irregularities have hit P&L by about Rs 1,960 crore as of March 31, 2025, eroding reported net worth by roughly 2.3% as of Dec 2024. Earlier profits were overstated as notional gains flowed into P&L while losses sat parked as assets, inflating NII and earnings quality. The derivatives irregularities saw several members of the senior management stepping down with the board bringing in Rajiv Anand from Axis Bank to head the private lender. The bank recognised the losses, absorbed pain in its FY25 earnings which tipped the bank into a Q4 FY25 net loss after one-off write-offs/provisions. Capital/net worth took a 2–2.5% post-tax hit, trimming buffers and nudging growth appetite and capital pricing. The derivatives loss resulted in the shares of the bank sliding as investors reassessed earnings credibility and governance. The scrutiny also sharpened on the board/management/audit committees, intensifying regulatory pressure and SFIO oversight.

NEW DELHI: India’s cricket world has found a new talking point, and his name is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At just 14 years old, the young batter continues to stun fans, experts, and former players with performances that feel almost unreal for his age. His latest heroics in domestic cricket have once again put him firmly in the spotlight.Veteran politician and cricket enthusiast Shashi Tharoor summed up the excitement around the teenager with a bold comparison. Reacting to Sooryavanshi’s latest feat, Tharoor wrote on X, “The last time a fourteen year old showed such prodigious cricketing talent, it was Sachin Tendulkar — and we all know what became of him. What are waiting for? Vaibhav Suryavanshi for India!”Sooryavanshi made headlines on Wednesday after blasting a breathtaking 36-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Plate league opener for Bihar against Arunachal Pradesh at the JSCA Oval Ground. This became the second-fastest century by an Indian in List A cricket, only behind Anmolpreet Singh’s 35-ball ton last season. Globally, it stands as the joint fourth-fastest List A century ever. The young left-hander did not stop there. He raced to 150 in just 54 balls and was finally dismissed for a staggering 190 off 84 deliveries. Bihar piled up a massive 574 for 6 in 50 overs, before bowling Arunachal Pradesh out for 177 to seal a crushing 397-run victory.Earlier this month, Sooryavanshi smashed an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Maharashtra at Eden Gardens. That knock made him the youngest player ever to score a century in the tournament, at just 14 years and 250 days.He also holds the record for the highest score by an Indian in U19 Asia Cup history, scoring 171 off 95 balls against the UAE. The teenager has already scored centuries against Australia U19 and for India A, including a jaw-dropping 144 off 42 balls in the Rising Stars Asia Cup.

Trial court erred: Allahabad high court; man freed after 24 years in jail | India News

Trial court erred: Allahabad high court; man freed after 24 years in jail

PRAYAGRAJ: Noting that the trial court failed to notice that the appellant was confessing to a crime out of fear for his life, the Allahabad high court has overturned the conviction of a man who spent almost 24 years in prison after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a dacoity case. The trial court had in 2002 delivered its verdict based solely on his admission in his statements recorded under CrPC Section 313. A division bench of Justice JJ Munir and Justice Sanjiv Kumar found fault with the trial judge for failing to notice that the appellant was confessing out of fear for his life. The high court concluded that the trial court erred in convicting the appellant as the prosecution had failed to connect him with the offence. Consequently, the court allowed the appeal, set aside the conviction and sentence, and acquitted Azad Khan of all charges. He is to be released forthwith from Mainpuri jail, the high court directed. The division bench ruled in its Dec 19 order that a conviction cannot be premised solely on an admission made in a statement under CrPC Sec 313, especially when the prosecution fails to adduce any corroborative or incriminating evidence. The court termed the incarceration of Azad Khan for almost 24 years as the sad part of the matter, noting that his so-called admission of guilt was likely driven by fear for his life rather than being a genuine confession. The Allahabad high court also noted that the appellant had no assistance of an advocate to defend himself and was not offered or provided any legal aid, which violated the right to a fair trial guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution (right to life and personal liberty) and also constituted a violation of CrPC Sec 304, which mandates legal aid, at the state’s expense, for the accused. In Feb 2002, the appellant was convicted under ICP Secs 395 (dacoity) and 397 (robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) by the special judge (DAA)/additional sessions judge, Mainpuri.

Gujarat: High court lets off dad on death row for pregnant teen’s rape and murder

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court has acquitted a father sentenced to death by a Surat trial court for the rape and murder of his pregnant teenage daughter, citing procedural lapses for refusing to accept the DNA report that led to his conviction as “credible evidence”.The case involves a 14-year-old migrant girl from Odisha whose body was found on Surat’s Dumas beach on June 29, 2017. An autopsy revealed she was pregnant and had been strangled to death. After her father’s arrest based on circumstantial evidence, the prosecution relied on DNA matching of the foetus and the accused to build what became the “cornerstone” of his Jan 2020 conviction under IPC and the Pocso Act.The case was turned on its head when the state govt sought the high court’s confirmation of the death sentence. “The prosecution failed to prove all necessary circumstances by reliable and clinching evidence, which would constitute a complete chain without a snap, as would permit a conclusion other than the one of the guilt of the accused,” the division bench of Justices Ilesh Vora and R T Vachhani said. The judges ruled that DNA samples of the victim’s unborn baby and the accused may have been “compromised” due to multiple lapses, including a 13-day delay in submitting these to the designated forensic laboratory and failure to preserve highly sensitive biological material in an ice box.

Tamil Nadu: Court sentences man to death for raping minor daughter

MADURAI: A Pocso court in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday convicted and sentenced a man to death for sexually assaulting and impregnating his minor daughter. The 49-year-old labourer, an alcoholic, repeatedly sexually assaulted his 14-year-old daughter since Aug 2024. He also threatened the survivor with dire consequences if she revealed the crime to her mother. When she fell ill, her mother took her to primary health centre where doctors found she was pregnant. Upon discovering that her husband had sexually assaulted their daughter, the woman lodged a complaint with an all-women police station in Feb 2025. Police registered a case for offences under the Pocso Act and arrested the accused.Special court judge K Suresh Kumar observed that the harm caused, deliberate misuse of authority, threats, and long-term impact on the survivor demonstrated the extreme seriousness of the offence. Acts committed by those in positions of trust, especially within families, require a strong response to maintain public confidence and protect other children, the judge said.
