Intense cold in north India, relief unlikely in next 48 hours

NEW DELHI/KULLU: A sharp cold wave tightened its grip across north India on Sunday, with snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and northeastern Himachal Pradesh, while scattered rain and dense fog pushed down temperatures across the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.IMD has forecast continued snowfall, rain and fog across much of north India over the next 24 to 48 hours, signalling little relief from the wintry onslaught. In J&K, fresh snowfall ushered in the 40-day-long Chillai-Kalan. Gulmarg recorded nearly two inches of snow accumulation, emerging as the only weather station in the Valley to log sub-zero temperatures, with the mercury plunging to minus 1.5°C. Sonamarg witnessed continuous snowfall from early morning through the afternoon.Despite snow, Srinagar recorded its warmest night of the season, with the minimum temperature settling at 4°C, six degrees above normal. However, at least 11 flights were cancelled at Srinagar International Airport due to adverse weather conditions.Himachal Pradesh experienced biting cold conditions as snowfall draped high-altitude areas of Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts. Snowfall was recorded at Shinku La, Rohtang Pass and parts of Pangi Valley, with flakes later observed near Atal Tunnel. Snowfall, though light, drew large numbers of tourists to Shinku La, located around 5,000 metres and being developed as a new snow tourism destination.Meanwhile, the mid and lower hills remained under dense cloud cover, prolonging a dry spell that has left Himachal with a 100% rainfall deficit this month. IMD has warned of moderate to severe snowstorms at isolated places in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.In the plains, the winter chill intensified across Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as thick fog enveloped several areas. Narnaul in Haryana emerged as the coldest location in the state, with mercury dipping to 5.2°C, while Gurdaspur was Punjab’s coldest at 6.8°C. Dense to very dense fog reduced visibility to under 50 metres in parts of UP, where cold day to severe cold day conditions were reported in pockets, along with isolated areas of Uttarakhand. Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4°C, slightly above average, a day after logging the season’s coldest Dec day.

No ‘sanskar’: UP police arrest four women after sons ‘harass’ teen girl; fathers to face arrest | Bareilly News

BAREILLY: Police in Budaun arrested four women under preventive sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after their sons, all under the age of 13, allegedly harassed a girl from their village studying in Class 8. The women were taken into custody on Friday and later released on personal bonds after being produced before a sub-divisional magistrate. Police said the action was aimed at holding parents accountable for not imparting ‘acche sanskar’ (good values) to their children. The girl had informed her father on Friday that the boys had been passing lewd remarks at her on the way to and from school for several days. Following this, the family approached Ushait police station on Wednesday and filed a first information report under the BNS and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

SHO Ajay Pal Singh confirmed that the minors were from the same village and belonged to a minority community. He said, “The juveniles didn’t go to school and used to loiter in the area. The girl and the boys did not know each other personally.” He added that the boys harassed the girl more than once and that police served notices to the parents since the boys were juveniles. “Their mothers were taken into custody to send a clear message to parents who do not ensure proper upbringing for their children,” Singh told TOI. “It is a way of punishing parents who fail to instil good values.”Legal experts have raised concerns over the use of preventive detention in this case. Under the BNS — which has replaced parts of the Indian Penal Code — police can act under preventive sections to maintain public order or prevent anticipated offences. However, applying these provisions against parents of minors without prior warnings or evidence of wilful negligence is rare and potentially contestable in court. The Pocso Act, meanwhile, lays down procedures to protect children from sexual offences but does not criminalise guardians unless negligence or abetment is proven.Singh also said the fathers of the four boys, currently working outside Uttar Pradesh, would face arrest on their return. He added that the action was also meant to deter similar behaviour among other children in the village. Efforts by TOI to contact Budaun SP Brijesh Kumar Singh and DIG (Bareilly zone) Ajay Kumar Sahani were unsuccessful. Their respective PROs said both officials were in meetings and unavailable.

Brisbane Heat Playing XI vs Sydney Thunder- BBL 2025-26, Match 9

Sydney Thunder will be up against the Brisbane Heat in the ninth match of the Big Bash League. This article provides details about the Brisbane Heat’s Playing 11 vs Sydney Thunder for the ninth match of the tournament.

Brisbane Heat Playing XI vs Sydney Thunder- BBL 2025-26, Match 9:

Openers: Colin Munro, Jack Wildermuth

Brisbane Heat, the team that chased record-breaking 258 runs in the last match against the Perth Scorchers, would look to carry the same batting form when they take on the Sydney Thunder in the next fixture.

The former BBL champions would want to register their second win of the tournament, having played two, lost one, and won one game so far

next

To accomplish the above mentioned goal, the team would bank on its openers to get the Heat off to a good start and lay aplatform for the incoming batters to capatalize on, which wasn’t the case in the last match

Colin Munro, who was dismissed without scoring ina high pressure chase against the Scorchers, would look to make up for it by playing a match-winning knock against the Thunder.

Munro’s opening partner, Jack Wildermuth, on the other hand, would want to keep up the good work that he did by scoring a century in the last match when he takes the field against the Heat.

Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Nathan McSweeney (c), Matthew Renshaw, Max Bryant, Hugh Weibgen, Jimmy Peirson (wk)

If we talk about how the middle order of the Heat fared in the last match, it didn’t have much to do as Matthew Renshaw, who was involved in a match-winning partnership with Wildermuth, also scored a hundred.

The team management would bank on Renshaw to come good once again against the Brisbane Heat, who are in search of their first win.

Other batters like Nathan McSweeney, Max Bryant, and Hugh Weibgen would also be entrusted to flex their muscles if they get a chance to bat in the next match.

The batting lineup of the Heat would be confident of putting on yet another strong performance with the bat, as the batters have shown good form in the two matches that the team has played so far.

Bowlers: Xavier Bartlett, Shaheen Afridi, Liam Haskett, Matthew Kuhnemann

Unlike the batting, Brisbane Heat’s bowling has been a cause of concern for them as the bowlers have conceeded over 200 runs in both games, which they would be aware of and would look to deliver an improved performance.

The bowling attack, which comprises the likes of Xavier Bartlett, Shaheen Afridi, Liam Haskett, and Matthew Kuhnemann, would back itself to have a good outing against a batting lineup that struggled to get going in the last match.

Despite the Thunder batters being out of form, the bowlers cannot afford to be complacent while bowling to the likes of David Warner and Sam Konstas, both of whom have the ability to take the game away from the opposition.

That is the reason why it will have to be a team effort from the Heat bowlers, so as to restrict the opposition batters from scoring freely.

‘Yashasvi Jaiswal deserved spot over Ishan Kishan’: Ex-India batter calls out India’s T20 World Cup picks | Cricket News

'Yashasvi Jaiswal deserved spot over Ishan Kishan': Ex-India batter calls out India’s T20 World Cup picks

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has openly questioned the selection choices for India’s 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup squad, suggesting that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jitesh Sharma should have been preferred over Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar. Jaffer’s comments come in the wake of a shock announcement on Saturday that saw Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill axed from the squad, ahead of both the World Cup title defence and a preparatory five-match T20 series against New Zealand.

Inside story of why Shubman Gill was DROPPED from India T20I World Cup squad

All-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed vice-captain, while Kishan earned his place following a standout campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Rinku Singh also returned to the squad, taking a spot over Jitesh Sharma, partly due to India’s strategy of having two wicketkeeper-batsmen capable of opening the innings.

“Why not Jaiswal and Jitesh? I would have picked them instead of Ishan and Washi. Axar is VC so he’s guaranteed to play and you can’t play Washi ahead of Varun and Kuldeep. Jitesh hasn’t done anything wrong to be dropped, and Yashasvi… there’s no need to explain why he should be in the squad in the first place,” Jaffer wrote on his X account on Sunday. Jaiswal last featured in T20Is during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July 2024 but missed out on consistent opportunities due to his ongoing Test commitments. The 10th edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, will feature 20 teams. India, the defending champions after a thrilling seven-run victory over South Africa in the 2024 final in Barbados, have been drawn in Group A with Pakistan, USA, Netherlands, and Namibia. India will kick off their campaign against the USA at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on February 7, followed by a clash against Namibia at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on February 12. The marquee India-Pakistan showdown is scheduled for February 15 at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, before finishing the league stage against the Netherlands at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on February 18.

Eggs in India pose no cancer risk, says food safety regulator

NEW DELHI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) firmly rejected claims linking eggs to cancer risk, saying eggs sold in India are safe for consumption and that recent reports and social media posts are scientifically unsupported and alarmist.Clarifying concerns over alleged presence of nitrofuran metabolites (AOZ) – trace marker residues that may be detected in eggs following illegal use of banned nitrofuran antibiotics in poultry – the regulator said on Saturday that the use of nitrofurans is strictly prohibited at all stages of poultry and egg production under India’s food safety regulations. Any suggestion that eggs contain cancer-causing substances, it said, is misleading.FSSAI explained that the Extraneous Maximum Residue Limit (EMRL) of 1.0 g/kg for nitrofuran metabolites is set only as a regulatory detection threshold, not as a permissible level. “Trace detections below the EMRL do not amount to a food safety violation and do not pose a health risk,” an official said. The authority said India’s standards are aligned with global practices, noting that the EU and the US also ban nitrofurans and use reference values solely for enforcement. Differences in numerical benchmarks reflect analytical methods, not safety standards. On public health, FSSAI said there is no established causal link between trace-level dietary exposure to nitrofuran metabolites and cancer, and no health authority worldwide has associated normal egg consumption with increased cancer risk.Addressing reports tied to a specific egg brand, the regulator said such findings are isolated and batch-specific, often linked to inadvertent contamination or feed-related factors, and do not represent the overall egg supply chain. FSSAI urged consumers to rely on official advisories and scientific evidence, reiterating that eggs remain a nutritious and safe part of a balanced diet when produced and consumed in compliance with food safety norms.

Landslide deaths: Jammu & Kashmir court quashes plea seeking FIR against Vaishno Devi shrine board

Landslide deaths: Jammu & Kashmir court quashes plea seeking FIR against Vaishno Devi shrine board

JAMMU: A court in J&K’s Reasi district dismissed a plea seeking an FIR against Vaishno Devi shrine board officials for the death of 35 pilgrims in a landslide on the tracks to the site on Aug 26, ruling that a natural disaster was responsible for the tragedy. The PIL urged the registration of a police case under BNS Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 106 (causing death by rash or negligent acts) against the shrine board CEO and other officials for allegedly ignoring “adverse weather” warnings and red alerts in the state, which amounted to criminal negligence.JMFC Katra Sidhant Vaid nixed the plea, noting that the pilgrimage had been halted from time to time when required and SOPs were followed to ensure public safety. “The case of criminal negligence is not made out, and no cognisable offence is prima facie made out,” he said. The judge, however, clarified that the court’s observations would not have any bearing on the inquiry ordered into the mishap by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha days after the accident.Following the Aug 26 landslide, the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage remained suspended for 22 days.

Electoral bonds scrapped by SC, trusts now swell BJP coffers | India News

Electoral bonds scrapped by SC, trusts now swell BJP coffers

NEW DELHI: Rather than having an adverse impact on BJP’s coffers, scrapping of electoral bonds in Feb 2024 ended up boosting its donations kitty in 2024-25, with electoral trusts alone disbursing over Rs 3,577 crore to the party. In 2023-24, BJP’s total receipts through voluntary contributions had stood at Rs 3,967 crore, of which Rs 1,686 crore came via bonds and Rs 856 crore through trusts. With electoral bonds scrapped, corporate donors still seeking partial anonymity – as regards party-wise break-up of their contributions – appear to have settled for the electoral trust (ET) route while retaining BJP as the top beneficiary. The party in office at the Centre cornered 83.6% of the nearly Rs 4,276 crore contributions routed through electorate trusts, according to data on the EC website. Compared to 2023-24, this marks an over four-fold rise in corporate donations to BJP through this route. Congress accounted for 7.3% and Trinamool Congress for 3.6% of contributions made through the ET route. The donations via electoral trusts are only a part of total contributions received by parties. The other sources include individuals, corporates, institutions and welfare bodies donating directly. Over the past years, the volume of non-trust donations has consistently exceeded that from contributions via trusts.Of the Rs 3,577.5 crore contribution receipts of BJP in 2024-25 though trusts, Rs 2,180.7 crore was disbursed by Prudent Electoral Trust (ET), Rs 757.6 crore by Progressive ET, Rs 460 crore by A B General ET, Rs 150 crore by New Democratic ET, Rs 30.1 crore by Harmony ET, Rs 21 crore by Triumph ET, Rs 5 crore by Jaybharath ET, Rs 3 crore by Samaj ET, Rs 9.5 lakh by Jankalyan ET and Rs 7.75 lakh by Einzigartig ET.Congress received Rs 216.3 crore from Prudent in 2024-25, Rs 77.3 crore from Progressive, Rs 15 crore from AB General ET, Rs 5 crore from New Democratic ET and Rs 9.5 lakh from Jan Kalyan ET. Thus, the grand old party received over Rs 313 crore of its total 517 crore contributions in 2024-25 via the trust route.Prudent maintained its position as the top trust donor to political parties, having disbursed a total of Rs 2,668 crore to 15 parties in the last financial year. The Tata Group-linked Progressive ET was a distant second with its total contributions at Rs 915 crore in 2024-25, of which Rs 757 crore went to BJP, Rs 77 crore to Congress and Rs 10 crore to eight other parties.Prudent’s Rs 2,668 crore kitty was distributed among BJP (Rs 2,180.7 crore); Congress (Rs 216.3 crore); Trinamool Congress (Rs 92 crore); YSR Congress Party (Rs 88 crore); TDP (Rs 40 crore); AAP (Rs 16.4 crore); Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (Rs 10 crore); BRS, JDU, BJD and AJSU (Rs 5 crore each); Sikkim Democratic Front (Rs 2.5 crore); LJP and NCP (Rs 1 crore each); and Praja Shanthi Party (Rs 50 lakh).A B General ET made Rs 460 crore worth of corporate donations to BJP and Rs 15 crore to Congress. The Mahindra Group-backed New Democratic ET gave Rs 150 crore of its total Rs 160 crore contributions to BJP, with Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT receiving Rs 5 crore each. Triumph disbursed Rs 21 crore to BJP and Rs 4 crore to Telugu Desam Party. Harmony ET contributed Rs 30.1 crore to BJP, Rs 3 crore to Shiv Sena-UBT and Rs 2 crore to NCP-Sharad Pawar. Jan Pragati Electoral Trust disbursed Rs 1 crore to Shiv Sena.Congress’s receipts in 2024-25 fell way short of the Rs 828 crore it had received via bonds in 2023-24 but were higher than its Rs 171 crore bond income in 2022-23, a non-general election year. Similarly, TMC’s Rs 184.5 crore receipts in 2024-25, of which Rs 153.5 crore were through trusts, were no match for its Rs 612 crore receipts via bonds in 2023-24. BJD, which received Rs 245.5 crore in bonds in 2023-24, received Rs 60 crore in donations, including Rs 35 crore via trusts, in 2024-25. BRS not only saw its Rs 495 crore receipts in bonds (2023-24) eroded, but also its receipts from trusts, which dipped to Rs 15 crore from Rs 85 crore in 2023-24.
