Advent festivity leads countdown to Christmas | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The season of Advent that marks the countdown to Christmas is midway through. The observance began Nov 30 and will end at Christmas Eve Dec 24. Prayer rituals, choir performances, charity initiatives and community outreach is at the heart of Advent as Christians prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ the Saviour.Mount Mary Basilica in Bandra dazzled beneath the winter sky Saturday evening, complete with a beautifully lit facade and choir performances on both days this weekend. Vice rector Fr Sunder Albuquerque said, “The season of Advent is a time to look backward to the first coming of Jesus into history. It also looks forward to Jesus’ second coming at the end of history.”At Salvation Church, Dadar, parish priest Fr Michael Pinto addressed his flock by sending out a pertinent message: “Advent is a time to rediscover the Jesus of the gospel and make room for him to be born in the heart, home and community.”Fr Austin Norris, parish priest of St Paul Church, Dadar East, explained the ritual lighting of the candles. He said, “Advent is a time of prayerful waiting and preparation for the birth of the messiah, Jesus Christ. It is four weeks symbolized by four candles on the Advent wreath, which stand for hope, peace, joy and love. These candles are lit on the four Sundays of Advent. The three purple candles and the fourth pink candle — for joy — speak of the keen expectation of the coming of Jesus, to save mankind from sin and restore humanity to a loving relationship with God Almighty. It calls us to a hopeful waiting as did the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Joseph — for Jesus to be born.”Fr Austin quoted from the scriptures: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely (Jeremiah 23:5). The Church waits with bated breath — in Advent preparation — for the coming of the Messiah, Christ the Lord; in prayer and penance and joyful hope. Come O Come Emmanuel!”

AI eyes 275 extra December flights, seeks long-term plan

AI eyes 275 extra December flights, seeks long-term plan

NEW DELHI: Air India has offered to explore operating 275 additional flights this month in wake of the government-ordered 10% capacity cut for IndiGo. The Tata Group airline has asked aviation ministry, which is likely to finalise the route curtailment over the weekend itself, for a long-term plan so that it acts accordingly, reports Saurabh Sinha. “There are about 1,900 IndiGo routes of which we are cutting at least 10%. A final decision will be taken by Sunday or Monday. Some of these routes will be given to Air India, AI Express and Akasa. We can’t allow people to suffer in peak travel season. Also, this is a way to check a single airline’s domination,” said a senior govt official. SpiceJet may also operate some extra flights.Sources said AI sought clarity from the government about how long the current situation would play out. “In the short term, we are exploring operating 275 extra fights this month on routes that bear the maximum brunt (of IndiGo cuts). Whenever possible, we operate our widebody Boeing 777 between Delhi and Mumbai. We want to know how long this (IndiGo cuts) will continue so that accordingly we can act. The short-term addition is coming from the spare capacity we had in our existing system,” said sources. Other airlines have seen a major jump in aircraft occupancy after the IndiGo fiasco.Meanwhile, IndiGo operated over 2,050 flights for the second day running Saturday “as per the revised, scaled down schedule.” An IndiGo statement said, “…We have informed all our airport partners to publish the new flight schedules of the adjusted network on terminal screens to avoid any confusion. With over 3.2 lakh customers choosing to fly with us daily, we are grateful for the confidence they continue to place in us.” Aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha has majorly upped the scale of Air Sewa, the government’s complaint redress forum, so that issues of affected IndiGo passengers can be addressed quickly.Officials probing the IndiGo fiasco said the airline had denied pilot shortage. “Probe is on. What we have observed so far is a mix of several things like not having a buffer in pilot numbers to meet any sudden increased requirement; a bravado by the airline that it can ‘manage’ the situation created by the new crew duty rules (which have now been put in abeyance for IndiGo A320 pilots till Feb 10) and a breakdown in management-pilot relations,” they said.

Lionel Messi GOAT tour of India: What led to the chaos at Salt Lake Stadium?

Many ticket-holders, including those who paid premium prices, complained that they failed to see Messi at all — either in person or on the stadium’s big screens — despite waiting for hours. The presence of politicians and dignitaries occupying key areas further limited visibility, adding to the sense of exclusion among fans.Outside the stadium, disgruntled supporters told the media that Messi had remained on the field only briefly before being escorted away for safety reasons. The chaos stood in sharp contrast to the earlier mood in the city. Earlier in the day, Messi had virtually unveiled a 70-foot iron statue of himself at the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town, depicting him holding the FIFA World Cup trophy — a moment that drew widespread admiration. However, the scenes at Salt Lake Stadium ultimately cast a shadow over Kolkata’s hosting of the global icon, raising serious questions about event planning and security as Messi’s India tour moves ahead.

Called ‘fauji’ by Kalam at 3, Lieutenant at 22 | Dehradun News

Called ‘fauji’ by Kalam at 3, Lieutenant at 22

DEHRADUN: Nineteen years ago, during Indian Military Academy’s passing out parade, then-President APJ Abdul Kalam bent down and held the hands of a bright-eyed three-year-old boy standing beside his father. “Ye fauji ka haath hai (These are the hands of a soldier),” he told the child. On Saturday, those words came full circle on the same parade ground as a strapping young man got commissioned into the Indian Army.Lieutenant Harmanmeet Singh’s commissioning marked the continuation of a family tradition that stretches back to the early years of independent India. He is the fourth generation from his family to don the olive green, following a legacy that began with his great-grandfather, late Subedar Partap Singh, who joined the Army in 1948. He was followed by Harmanmeet’s grandfather, late Sepoy Daljeet Singh, and his grand-uncles — late Major Bhagwant Singh and Col Ujagar Singh (retd). The 22-year-old Kanpur native was awarded the Silver Medal at the Cadets Training Wing of Military College of Telecommunication Engineering under the technical entry scheme (46th course). He will serve with 6 Maratha Light Infantry, the regiment commanded by his father, Colonel Harmeet Singh.Col Harmeet graduated from IMA on Dec 9, 2000 — almost exactly 25 years before his son marched out of the gates. The Army, he said, had always been part of Harmanmeet’s world. Watching his father in uniform, Harmanmeet insisted on a miniature Army outfit with matching insignia and badges. “It was his favourite attire. Even as a three-year-old in kindergarten, he told his teacher he wanted to be a Gentleman Cadet,” Col Harmeet said.Between 2005 and 2007, Col Harmeet served as an instructor at IMA. It was during this period, in Dec 2006, that President Kalam visited as the reviewing officer for the PoP, at which he shook Harmanmeet’s tiny hand.Harmanmeet topped both Class X and Class XII. Though his father suggested he consider IIT — a path no one in the family had taken — Harmanmeet remained resolute about the Army. “He trained at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya under the technical entry scheme, spent three years at CTW at Military Headquarters of War near Indore, and reported to IMA in November,” said Col Harmeet.Harmanmeet’s mother, Harveen Reen — whom Col Harmeet calls their pillar of strength — said there could be no greater pride than seeing her husband and son serve the country together. For Lt Harmanmeet, the journey felt both inevitable and overwhelming. “I couldn’t dream of anything else after seeing my father in uniform and witnessing PoPs at IMA when he was an instructor. Today, I finally realised my dream,” he said.

Mumbai: Woman blackmails and extorts 1.5 crore from Goregaon lawyer, arrested | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A 36-year-old woman was arrested on Dec 11 by Goregaon police for allegedly blackmailing and extorting Rs 1.5 crore from a prominent city lawyer. She is in police custody and is being interrogated in connection with the extortion case. Investigators have identified four family members as co-conspirators and launched a special operation to arrest them. Police said the accused ensnared the lawyer in a honey trap, blackmailed him and threatened him for extortion. “In May 2024, he was introduced to the accused woman through a mutual friend. The accused, a resident of Jodhan-Jagatpur in Solan, Himachal Pradesh. After this introduction, they became good friends. In June 2024, he went to Geneva. During this time, the accused called him, and she was crying on the phone, so he inquired about her well-being. She said that her relatives were seriously ill and requested financial assistance of five lakh rupees. He then transferred two and a half lakh rupees to her online,” said a Goregaon police officer. The officer added that she later claimed she needed Rs 2.5 lakh for modelling work. During their conversation he had told her that he was married and had a daughter. In his complaint the lawyer said: “Despite this, she was still trying to persuade me to have a physical relationship with her. After that, she continuously demanded money from me citing various reasons. Sometimes she would say it was for shooting, and other times that she needed to go to her village, asking me to send Rs10 lakhs and Rs3 lakhs.Another officer said the lawyer met her at the airport and gave her Rs3 lakhs and handed over another Rs10 lakhs to her sister. “In July 2024, the two of them went on a trip to Bali. There, she again demanded twenty lakh rupees from him. Since the Bali trip had been very expensive, he refused to give her the money,” said the officer. According to the FIR, the lawyer said: “Because of her continuous demands for money, I became somewhat cautious and decided to distance from her. When she realized this, she sent me some obscene photos of their physical relationship. She threatened to file a case against me for molestation and sexual assault if I didn’t meet her demands.”Police said she was blackmailing him by threatening to defame him on social media and in society. Fearing defamation, he paid another Rs 15 lakh between July 2024 and July 2025. Unwilling to endure further threats, the lawyer filed a complaint in October. The accused was arrested on Dec 11 and produced before the local court in Borivli, which remanded her to police custody. The police are currently searching for her parents and both sisters.

CBDT acts against intermediaries filing tax returns with bogus deduction claims

CBDT acts against intermediaries filing tax returns with bogus deduction claims

NEW DELHI: After a massive nationwide operation, Central Board of Direct Taxes acted against several intermediaries involved in filing income tax returns with bogus claims of deductions and exemptions under the Income Tax Act.The move followed actions in July 2025, covering 150 premises, during which more than 102 suspicious RUPPs were identified for their role in facilitating bogus donation-linked deductions. Data analytics had flagged over 2 lakh taxpayers who claimed suspicious deductions under Section 80GGC, adding up to Rs 5,500 crore routed through suspicious or non-existent RUPPs and a similar amount of bogus donations to non-genuine charitable organisations, said officials. The enforcement findings have also prompted reversals of bogus deductions by taxpayers. Around 54,000 have already corrected their filings and withdrawn ineligible claims worth approximately Rs 1,400 crore and updated their returns after CBDT nudged them to revise their returns. Most of these taxpayers claimed deductions below Rs 5 lakh and a few companies claimed very high deductions. The exercise also revealed how intermediaries had established networks of agents to file returns with incorrect claims on commission basis. An intermediary was found to be advertising guaranteed refunds in cinema halls and on social media. It was found that there was a syndicate of professionals who was operating through WhatsApp and Telegram channels to find taxpayers looking at reducing tax liability through fake donations to RUPPs or charitable organisations.Instances of misuse of CSR-linked trusts, which facilitated bogus donation receipts in exchange for cash-back, were found during the probe.“It was observed that huge amounts of bogus claims have been made on account of donation RUPPs or charitable institutions and reduced their tax obligations and have also claimed bogus refunds.Evidence gathered from enforcement actions indicated that RUPPs many of which were non-filers, non-operational at their registered addresses, and are not engaged in any political activity were being used as conduits for routing funds, hawala transactions, cross border remittances and issuing bogus receipts for donations,” an official statement said.

Kerala local body election results 2025: UDF sweeps local polls, historic NDA win, LDF loses ground; PM Modi calls it a ‘watershed moment in state’s politics’ | Kochi News

KOCHI: The results of Kerala’s local body elections signal a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, with the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) emerging as the dominant force across most tiers of local governance. The UDF recorded notable gains at the expense of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), which struggled to defend several strongholds. The elections, widely seen as a bellwether ahead of the 2026 assembly polls, also highlight a limited but visible expansion by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), particularly in urban centres such as Thiruvananthapuram. The UDF secured victories in four of the six corporations, reclaiming key cities from the LDF, which had dominated urban areas in 2020. Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, and Kannur fell to the UDF, marking important inroads into long-held Left bastions.
