Tanzid Hasan’s scorching performance leads Bangladesh to T20I series triumph over Ireland

In the decider of the three-match T20I series at Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Tuesday, Bangladesh stamped their authority by defeating Ireland by eight wickets with 38 balls to spare, clinching the series 2-1.

Ireland set a modest target of 118 runs after being restricted to 117 all out, thanks to a disciplined bowling effort from Bangladesh. Tanzid Hasan’s unbeaten 55 off 36 balls was the highlight of the run chase as Bangladesh comfortably crossed the finish line at 119/2 in 13.4 overs, underlining their dominance in the final game.

Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling strategy against Ireland

Ireland’s innings began with promise as opener Paul Stirling top-scored with 38 runs off 27 deliveries, offering some early fireworks, complemented by Tim Tector’s quick 17. However, Bangladesh bowlers maintained tight lines and lengths to curb free scoring opportunities. Mahedi Hasan and Rishad Hossain bowled impressively, with Mahedi finishing with 1/24 in four overs and Rishad striking thrice for 21 runs. Shoriful Islam also contributed decisively, taking two wickets for 21 runs.

Most notably, Mustafizur Rahman was outstanding, claiming three crucial wickets for just 11 runs in his three overs, dismantling key Irish batters in the middle order. Ireland’s batting lineup faltered under sustained pressure and disciplined bowling, losing wickets at regular intervals and managing only 117 runs in 19.5 overs. Extras were kept minimal, showcasing Bangladesh’s control throughout Ireland’s innings.

Tanzid Hasan’s blistering knock secures an emphatic T20I series win for Bangladesh

Chasing a below-par total, Bangladesh’s openers started positively but lost a couple of early wickets, with Saif Hassan contributing 19 runs before falling to Craig Young. The captain Litton Das could only manage seven before falling to Harry Tector. However, Tanzid anchored the chase brilliantly, displaying a blend of aggressive stroke play and calculated risk-taking. Tanzid’s 55* came off just 36 balls against tight bowling, laced with four boundaries and three sixes, ensuring a steady flow of runs. Partnering well with Parvez Hossain Emon (33* off 26 balls), the duo took charge and paced the chase expertly. They put on a resolute unbeaten partnership that guided Bangladesh home with more than six overs remaining, highlighting the dominance Bangladesh had in this match. Tanzid’s all-round impact extended into fielding as well, with multiple catches taken off Ireland’s bat, underlining his complete match-winning performance.

‘High score & upgrade to general category won’t erode quota perks’

KOLKATA: Even if a candidate under the reserved category scored higher than the cut-off marks and was upgraded to general category, s/he would continue to enjoy benefits of the former category, Calcutta high court held Tuesday. The directive came after an SSC candidate, who made it to the first list of the 2025 SLST exam, moved high court to restore her SC status even if she was upgraded to general category.SSC senior counsel Kalyan Bandyopadhyay sought HC’s permission to upgrade the candidate to the general category contending that another SC candidate with lower marks would miss the opportunity of being considered if the petitioner wanted to restore her status. Bandyopadhyay argued that the idea of reservation was meant for the welfare of a community and not for an individual.Justice Amrita Sinha, however, noted that the petitioner had marked herself as a reserved category candidate while filling the form and had submitted Rs 200, a fee meant for that category. The judge referred to her Nov 27 order, in which the court had held that once a candidate’s category was final, authorities could not “change it suo motu”.

Don’t need anything for myself, give jobs to my sons: Mathura | Nagpur News

NAGPUR: Half a century passed bearing a trauma that had revolutionised anti-rape laws in India and saved thousands of identities from being exposed to shame, but when TOI’s story on her plight put her back on the spotlight, Mathura forgot about her hardship and sought help for her two sons.On Tuesday, when Chandrapur district collector Vinay Gowda stepped into her ramshackle home in a tiny hamlet in east Maharashtra and wanted to know how he could help her, she demanded nothing, only jobs for her sons.Gowda and his team, surprised by her selflessness, have now begun planning contractual openings or business grants for her sons. “The younger of the two seemed proactive. We can think of helping him start a shop or a goat-rearing business,” said Gowda, who handed over a cheque of Rs8 lakh to Mathura. The cheque was given to the bank manager, who was in Gowda’s team.“The cheque has been deposited and a fixed deposit opened, which would need the tehsildar’s nod to encash. She would now get Rs5,000 per month as interest,” said Gowda, who reached Mathura’s home amid his tight schedule on a polling day in the district.Gowda further stated the govt would extend a grant under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to build a home at the same place, where Mathura lives. The gram panchayat would carry out the construction, said the collector, who also deputed a person to coordinate and monitor her requirements.Gowda stated he’s also contemplating helping Mathura get land under a scheme for the tribal population. “Up to Rs 20 lakh grant can be allocated for 3-4 acres of land,” said the collector, adding her ration card has been updated to ensure 30kg of grains, while benefits under the Niradhar Yojana would resume too.Mathura’s custodial rape in 1972 triggered nationwide protests and ushered legal reforms. The fire was rekindled by the outgoing Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, during a speech at a lecture series in Delhi.TOI’s story on Mathura’s impoverished life paved the way for nationwide concern and help poured in from various corners of the country. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also took cognisance and showed keenness to help.

Stop SC benefits to converted christians, HC instructs UP

PRAYAGRAJ: Allahabad high court has directed the Uttar Pradesh govt to ensure that anyone who converts to Christianity automatically forfeits all Scheduled Caste benefits, failing which it would be construed as a “fraud on the Constitution and contrary to the ethos of reservation policies”.Justice Praveen Kumar Giri’s Nov 21 order cites Paragraph 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, specifying that nobody other than a Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist can be deemed a member of an Scheduled Caste community. The court directed the principal secretary of the minorities welfare department to take appropriate steps to ensure that the distinction between minority and SC status was strictly enforced. The court said retention of SC status after conversion would amount to fraudulently claiming benefits since there is no caste system in Christianity. It fixed a timeline of four months for all district magistrates to act in accordance with the law to identify and prevent such occurrences.Justice Giri passed the order while dismissing a plea filed by a man accused of “mocking Hindu deities” and promoting enmity. The appellant, Jitendra Sahani, had petitioned the court to quash the charge sheet in the case on the ground that he had sought permission from the authorities to “preach the words of Jesus Christ on my land”.Justice Giri noted that Sahani mentioned his religion as “Hindu” in his affidavit, although he had converted to Christianity. It transpired that the appellant was from the SC community before his conversion.A witness in the case alleged that Sahani ridiculed the Hindu faith by claiming it offered no respect due to caste hierarchies, whereas embracing Christianity would lead to “jobs, business growth and financial benefits from the missionaries”.The court mentioned a recent Supreme Court judgment – C Selvarani Vs special secretary-cum-district collector 2024 – in which the bench held that a person ceases to belong to a particular caste after converting to Christianity.

2 lakh acute respiratory caseslinked to pollution: Govt

NEW DELHI: What India’s metros are breathing may have a link with rising acute respiratory illness (ARI) cases hospitals are logging. There were 2 lakh ARI cases in Delhi during 2022-24, with thousands needing hospitalisation — a surge the health ministry Tuesday linked to rising air pollution, while noting that the causal pathways remain complex. Responding to a question by Dr Vikramjit Singh Sahney in RS, junior health minister Prataprao Jadhav said polluted air is a “triggering factor” for respiratory diseases, and worsening air quality in urban centres is being closely monitored through an expanding national surveillance system.Govt data shows that Delhi’s six central hospitals together reported 67,054 ARI emergency cases in 2022, 69,293 in 2023, and 68,411 in 2024, with admissions rising from 9,878 to 10,819 over the same period. Similar spikes were seen in Chennai and Mumbai, where thousands sought emergency care for breathing difficulties during severe pollution episodes. According to the Health Ministry, the impact of polluted air is shaped by multiple factors — including food habits, occupation, socio-economic conditions, immunity and medical history — making some people far more vulnerable than others. To capture these patterns in real time, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) now operates over 230 sentinel surveillance sites across 30 States and UTs. Digital ARI surveillance was also launched in August 2023 through the Integrated Health Information Portal.

Mumbai: The Praja Foundation released a Citizens’ Manifesto for Maharashtra’s municipal elections, which sought various reforms including improved service delivery, ensuring open and free access to civic data for transparent governance, increased municipal capacity through training and higher citizens’ participation, besides ward-wise quarterly work performance reports and a pledge regarding the same from candidates and political parties. The members of the NGO will soon meet political parties and their candidates and seek a pledge on the four commitments listed in the manifesto. While pointing out that the civic body’s focus in the past three years has been on big-ticket infrastructure projects, foundation CEO Milind Mhaske said attention should have been paid to delivering and improving basic civic services along with the infrastructure projects.Addressing mediapersons on Tuesday, office bearers of the foundation said for three years, municipal corporations in the state, including Mumbai, have functioned without elected representatives, weakening accountability. According to the foundation, priority service commitments for the next five years should be continuous: There should be equitable water distribution, clean functional and gender-balanced toilets, daily segregated waste collection in every ward, pothole-free roads with transparent quality standards, walkable, obstruction-free footpaths for pedestrians, monsoon preparedness plans published before rains with vulnerability mapping, vacancies should be filled and lateral entrants allowed in planning climate, finance and data analytics. Seeking efficient service delivery, the foundation stated that municipal bodies must establish clear, measurable standards like service level benchmarks for all public services and ensure strict adherence through monitoring and accountability systems. The priority service commitments listed in the manifesto also include filling critical vacancies, for example, 31% of medical and 42% of paramedical posts in the BMC, review and right-size cadre strength to eliminate redundancies, optimise staffing to improve efficiency and accountability, and introduce performance-linked promotion/incentives for the officials and staff of corporation.

Mumbai: Court convicts and sentences 27-year-old man to 3 years rigorous imprisonment for house break-ins and theft | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A magistrate’s court recently convicted and sentenced a 27-year-old man to three years rigorous imprisonment for “housebreaking after sunset and before sunrise, and theft,” breaking into the Andheri home of a man and fleeing with jewellery worth Rs 4.80 lakh in 2024. While the accused Fardeen Firdos Khan was found guilty under section 331 (4) of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which enhanced the sentence for such an offences to 14 years in jail, the magistrate found the sentence “too harsh.” His co-accused, Juber Karim Mulla Khan (48), was acquitted due to a lack of evidence. The woman and her husband, who both work at Sahar Airport, returned home to find the door lock broken, indicating a housebreaking had taken place. Judicial Magistrate First Class SG Agrawal, acquitted his co-accused Juber Khan (48), due to a lack of evidence. An FIR was registered at DN Nagar Police Station following a complaint by the victim Sadaf Inamdar, on Nov 21, 2024.The incident occurred between the night of Nov 20 and the morning of Nov 21, 2024, at Sadaf’s residence in Farukh Peter Chawl, Gavdevi Dongar, Andheri (West). A gold mangalsutra weighing approximately 40 grams and gold earrings weighing 5 grams, were reported missing. Sadaf stated she had taken out the ornaments and kept them in the kitchen in preparation for a trip to Pune. API Sunit Ghadge, the Detection Officer, arrested both accused on Nov 22, 2024. A charge sheet was filed on January 30, 2025. Fardeen remained in custody since his arrest, Juber was released on bail on March 27, 2025.The magistrate court noted that Sadaf and the undisputed spot panchnama established that housebreaking with theft had occurred. The door lock was found broken, and ornaments were missing. The defense did not cross-examine Sadaf, making the fact of the housebreaking and theft uncontested. The stolen mangalsutra was recovered at Fardeen’s behest while he was in police custody.Investigating Officer API Sunit Ghadge and a panch witness deposed that on Nov 24, 2024, Fardeen confessed to stealing the gold ornaments and concealing them at his home in Powai. Both witnesses corroborated that Fardeen led the police and panch to his locked house, retrieved a key hidden beneath a brick, and then took out a bag containing the gold mangalsutrafrom between an iron angle and a tin sheet. The magistrate held that the discovery was “convincingly established” by the prosecution. The magistrate held that person found in possession of recently stolen property, unless they can account for their possession, is presumed to be the thief or a receiver of stolen property.

Rohit scored a fluent 57 off 51 balls, laced with five fours and three sixes — enough to surpass Shahid Afridi’s long-standing record for most sixes in ODIs. Young pacer Harshit Rana impressed as well, finishing with 3/65.The win gives India a crucial advantage as they look to clinch the series in Raipur. Fans now await whether the “Ro-Ko show” continues to headline India’s batting brilliance once more.

Held after 10 years, Badlapur civic polls see 58%+ turnout | Mumbai News

Thane: After nearly 10 years, elections for the Badlapur Municipal Council were held on Tuesday, which witnessed an enthusiastic response from citizens across the town. By around 5:30pm, over 58% polling had been recorded, and officials estimated the final turnout to reach nearly 60%—higher than the 56% recorded during the 2015 civic polls. This year, elections were held for 44 seats including direct election for the post of council president out of the 49-member council, excluding six seats. According to the returning officer, voting for the remaining six seats will be held on Dec 20, and results for all seats will be declared on Dec 21.Throughout the day, several clashes broke out among Shiv Sena and BJP workers at multiple polling locations, prompting police intervention at more than one spot. At Gandhi Chowk, BJP workers alleged that Shiv Sena members threatened women who came to vote. The dispute quickly escalated into heated arguments, followed by pushing and shoving by both groups, after which police stepped in and brought the situation under control.Another confrontation involved BJP candidate Ramesh Solse’s supporters after Solse alleged that his son—who was standing outside a polling booth—was assaulted by a Shiv Sena worker. The incident triggered a larger clash as workers from both sides gathered, leading to a chaotic situation. Police rushed to the location and conducted lathi charge to disperse the crowd. At this booth, Shiv Sena candidate Nisha Thakre is contesting against the BJP, adding to the tension. BJP’s Rajendra Ghorpade claimed such incidents were taking place because Shiv Sena was afraid of losing support. At a booth in Khamkar School, voting was stalled for nearly two hours due to a technical glitch in the voting machine. Long queues formed as voters waited. Several voters complained that officials kept promising a replacement “within 15 minutes” but it took almost 2 hours to resolve the issue.Complaints of bogus voting also surfaced. At Holy Spirit School, a voter stated that upon arriving at the booth, she was informed that a vote had already been cast in her name. After she objected, officials allowed her to vote.In another incident near Holy Cross School in Badlapur East, BJP workers stopped a man carrying Rs 2 lakh in a white bag. When questioned, he reportedly gave evasive answers. Police seized the cash and are investigating whether it was intended for voter inducement.Despite the disturbance, leaders from all major parties expressed confidence in their prospects. Shiv Sena city chief Waman Mhatre said voters displayed overwhelming enthusiasm and stood in long queues since morning, expressing belief that the party would improve upon its earlier tally of 25 seats. BJP MLA Kishan Kathore accused Shiv Sena of bringing outsiders to influence voting and threatening local voters, but asserted that the BJP would still win the council president’s post with a strong majority. Minister Ashish Damle also stated that the voter turnout indicated that the BJP–NCP alliance would secure the maximum number of seats and win the municipal council president’s position.
