Haryana sports dept gives itself clean chit in deaths of teen basketballers | India News

Haryana sports dept gives itself clean chit in deaths of teen basketballers

ROHTAK: The families are incensed. Aman’s father, Suresh Kumar, rejected the govt’s compensation of Rs 5 lakh. “We want an FIR against those responsible for my son’s death. It may not be ‘under the sports department’ on paper, but why did the department never intervene on safety? We do not want compensation or clean chits in the name of inquiries,” he said.Strangely, the Rohtak report was prepared by the same district sports officer (DSO), who was suspended after the incident. Hardik died on Nov 25 and DSO Anoop Singh was suspended the very next day. But the report signed by Anoop is dated Nov 26. Does it mean he submitted the report before his suspension? Which would indicate that he wrapped up the investigation into the boy’s death in a matter of hours and gave his department the clean chit. What’s more, the same report was endorsed by sports deputy director Sunita Khatri, who marked it to director-sports, Rohtak division, Panchkula, on Nov 27, while was (and is) still under suspension.

Entering the match needing three sixes to go past Afridi’s tally of 351, Rohit reached the milestone in style and now sits at 352 sixes—achieved in just 269 innings, a full 100 fewer than Afridi.

Himalayan black bear enters Kashmir University, SKIMS; wildlife dept sets trap cages

SRINAGAR: Over the past four days, a Himalayan black bear has been spotted nearly 10km apart at two premier institutions in Kashmir — University of Kashmir (UoK), Hazratbal, and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar’s leading tertiary-care hospital — triggering panic. The wildlife department has placed cages at key locations, deployed drones, and is reviewing CCTV footage to trap the animal.A Himalayan bear was first spotted Friday near the girls’ hostel at UoK. CCTV footage showed the animal being chased by dogs outside the varsity gate, before climbing an electricity pole and leaping into the campus near the hostel. A UoK official said two black bears had been seen near Hazratbal area that evening, and one of them entered the campus after being chased by street dogs. The animal was believed to be hiding in the Botany Department’s botanical garden, prompting a search by the wildlife department. On Sunday, the varsity declared the campus safe after wildlife officials completed a thorough search and found no trace of the bear.On Monday evening, the black bear was sighted inside SKIMS. CCTV footage captured the animal roaming in the institute. Wildlife officials placed a bear trap within the premises to capture it. Senior institute officials said a search is on, but the animal has yet to be found.A senior wildlife official said a Himalayan black bear, first spotted in Saidpora area, had travelled through several localities before entering UoK and later moving toward SKIMS. An operation was underway to track the animal, he said, urging citizens not to dispose of garbage in the open as it attracts bears.Bear and leopard sightings around Srinagar have increased in recent years, particularly in late autumn. Last month, a bear was seen entering Amar Singh Club, Srinagar, near the posh Gupkar Road that houses the residences of the CM and some cabinet ministers.Senior wildlife official Intisar Suhail said black bears hardly go into hibernation now. “The effects of climate change, characterised by less precipitation, mainly snow; coupled with the availability of food in the form of garbage dumps, improperly disposed kitchen waste, and left-out fallen fruit in orchards, have enabled bears to skip hibernation and remain active through the winters,” he said.

In a first after Bombay HC order, KDMC agrees to pay compensation for manhole death | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that it will pay Rs 6 lakh to Eknath Kadam, the father of Ayush (13), who died after falling into a manhole with a damaged cover in Dombivli on Sept 28 this year. This is the first case where compensation will be paid following the High Court’s Oct 13 order directing corporations and state authorities to pay Rs 6 lakh to the legal heirs of the deceased in cases of death due to potholes or open manholes. For an injured person, compensation ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh will be provided, depending on the nature and gravity of the injury. “We are satisfied that at least there is a start to the order, and one person has been awarded compensation. Now, we expect, for the other 3-4 deaths…, the corporations to follow suit and ensure that it is done expeditiously… Now, we don’t have to wait for the next monsoon. This should be a sufficient lesson for all corporations to ensure the work is done in time,” said Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Sandesh Patil. KDMC’s advocate, AS Rao, submitted a Nov 27 document from the committee set up to determine compensation. He stated that the amount will be disbursed within two weeks. Furthermore, the committee has initiated an inquiry against the persons responsible. The judges directed that the inquiry report be submitted on Jan 22. The judges issued a notice to the Thane Municipal Corporation, state public works department (PWD), and MMRDA on an application by advocate Ruju Thakker, who cited a news report that in Thane, there were 18 deaths between Jan and Oct due to potholes. She said the TMC stated that there were no deaths. Referring to a picture, Justice Mohite Dere noted that there were no barricades on the dug-up portion of Ghodbunder Road, adding, “Somebody driving in the night is bound to meet with an accident. She said that before the next hearing on Dec 15, barricades must be put up. TMC’s advocate Mandar Limaye stated that all roads from Anand Nagar to Gaimukh Ghat are maintained by PWD and MMRDA and “not us.” He said PWD is the authority for the entire stretch of the highway. Thakker mentioned that there are 6-7-hour traffic jams, ambulances cannot reach hospitals, and even a toddler lost his life. The judges said they are aware that “the roads are in such a bad condition” from their experience of travelling to the judicial academy in Uttan. They questioned why the road work was not expedited. “Ghodbunder Road is one of the worst nightmares of people. We all know… Gaimukh Ghat is a major bottleneck,” said Justice Patil, adding, “This road is one of the major roads where all commercial vehicles ply because for Thane, Mumbai, Nashik, Gujarat, this is the major link… The govt should look into this.

SS-W vs MS-W, WBBL|11 Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between Sydney Sixes and Melbourne Stars?

The Sydney Sixers Women (SS-W) will take on the Melbourne Stars Women (MS-W) in Match 34 of WBBL|11 at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney, on Wednesday, in what shapes up as a pivotal mid-table contest with significant playoff ramifications.

The Sixers, with four wins from seven matches, are looking to build momentum at home, while the Stars – currently sitting slightly ahead with five victories in eight – aim to strengthen their push for a top-four finish.

The Sixers enter the clash with inconsistent form but continue to rely heavily on the brilliance of Ellyse Perry, who has already surpassed 250 runs this season while also contributing with the ball, taking 10 wickets. Ashleigh Gardner remains a major threat with her off-spin, especially on a pitch that rewards disciplined slower bowling.

For the Stars, Meg Lanning has been the cornerstone of their batting unit, scoring 301 runs at a strike rate above 130, while Annabel Sutherland spearheads the pace attack. However, concerns linger around their shaky middle order.

Drummoyne Oval Pitch Report

Drummoyne Oval in Sydney typically offers a bowler-friendly surface and is regarded as a venue where low to moderate scores are common. The pitch often assists both pace and spin, and conditions under lights can make batting particularly tricky, giving teams chasing a slight edge. Because the surface provides movement and grip, bowlers who maintain accuracy tend to thrive, making strategic planning essential.

The Powerplay overs become pivotal, as batters look to capitalise on fielding restrictions before the pitch slows or bowlers find their rhythm. Shot selection and patience are crucial, given that even though the wicket provides consistent bounce, run-making can become challenging when bowlers hit the right areas.
