Arsenal fought back from a goal down to beat Bournemouth 3-2 on Saturday, stretching their lead at the top of the Premier League as Aston Villa extended their winning run at home. A goal from Gabriel Magalhaes and two from the returning Declan Rice sent the Gunners six points clear of second-placed Villa and seven ahead of Manchester City.Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the character of his team, singling out Rice and Gabriel, whose sloppy pass set up Bournemouth for the opening goal.

Usman Khawaja’s retirement speech: ‘I want the journey for the next Usman Khawaja to be easier’

“I love the character of Gabriel, the way he overcome that situation — it’s just unbelievable, it says a lot about how much we’ve grown,” he told Sky Sports.“The team found a way to beat them and it’s a massive win.”The Spaniard said that Rice had worked hard to be available after missing Tuesday’s 4-1 home win against Villa with a knee problem.“He has stretched himself to the very limit and the team were awarded with two great goals,” he added.Evanilson gave impressive Bournemouth an early lead, stroking home after Gabriel’s error but the Brazil defender made up for his mistake just minutes later, converting after Noni Madueke’s drive to the byline.England midfielder Rice side-footed the Gunners ahead in the 54th minute from the edge of the area and gave them breathing space with about 20 minutes to go, producing a low finish from substitute Bukayo Saka’s cutback.Junior Kroupi brought Bournemouth back into the game with a thunderous right-footed finish but Arsenal held on for a fifth straight Premier League win — keeping them firmly on course for a first English title since 2004.– Villa’s home comforts –Earlier, Unai Emery’s Villa bounced back from their chastening defeat at Arsenal to beat Nottingham Forest 3-1, recording their 11th consecutive home win in all competitions.England forward Ollie Watkins gave Villa a deserved lead on the cusp of half-time with a powerful strike from just outside the area and John McGinn scored twice in the second half, either side of a Morgan Gibbs-White goal.Villa boss Emery said his players and coaching staff had held a meeting after their drubbing at the Emirates Stadium.“I am so happy,” he said. “We had to recover our energy and our confidence. Here, at Villa Park, the energy we create was really important.“Forest are competitive. After the Arsenal match we met — the players and staff — (and discussed) how we are doing this season, how we are feeling, how we needed to keep the same consistency as before, how we needed to be together and strong.”Sean Dyche’s Forest, who have now suffered four straight league defeats, remain one place above the relegation zone, four points clear of West Ham, who slumped to a damaging 3-0 loss at Molineux.Relegation-threatened West Ham travelled to face winless basement club Wolves in desperate need of a victory.Jhon Arias gave the home side an early lead and Hwang Hee-chan doubled their advantage from the penalty spot shortly after the half-hour mark.Teenager Mateus Mane drilled in his first Premier League goal shortly before half-time, all but guaranteeing Rob Edwards’s team a first league win of the season.Nuno Espirito Santo’s Hammers are in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League along with Wolves and Burnley.“Everybody needs to think and reflect and question ourselves,” Nuno said. “It’s about actions. It’s been very bad, very bad.”Wolves, who drew with Manchester United in midweek, remain 12 points from safety.“We have been improving and progressing and you saw that today,” Edwards told the BBC. “It is another step in the right direction, that is all it was and it is nice it has culminated in a win.”Elsewhere on Saturday, Brighton beat Burnley 2-0 to end a six-match winless run, courtesy of goals from Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari. City host managerless Chelsea on Saturday while Liverpool and Manchester United are also in action.

AIFF likely to ease pressure on clubs, pave way for start of ISL | Goa News

There has been no ISL action since Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the ISL in April last year

Panaji: A three-member co-ordination committee has asked the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to immediately declare commencement date for the Indian Super League (ISL) and “relegate those clubs who refuse to participate to the immediate lower division.”The panel has suggested Feb 15 as the start date for this edition of the top tier league with Jan 15 as deadline for clubs to sign submit 20-year agreements. The AIFF and 14 ISL clubs have held talks since August last year without a breakthrough, while the coordination committee has had five meetings in the last 10 days. Now, both parties appear to have made some headway with the federation agreeing to financially contribute towards organisation of the league, clubs getting time until June to pay this season’s franchise fee of Rs 1 crore and the freedom to refine the existing request for proposal (RFP), “making it more attractive for a commercial partner/broadcaster” to come on board.“AIFF should finalise the short-term competition format in consultation with the clubs, and in the absence of consensus, exercise its authority as league owner to finalise the format without permitting further delay or digression,” the panel said in its report which was submitted to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey. “The committee hopes AIFF will take all necessary steps to safeguard the interests of footballers, clubs, and sports professionals, and ensure continuity and stability of Indian football.”The AIFF emergency committee met on Saturday to consider and acknowledge the report, “which recommended that the league be conducted by the federation.” Accordingly, the AIFF said in a statement, “we will conduct the league, and the date of commencement will be announced next week.”According to sources, while the panel has recommended that AIFF should bear the cost of refereeing and broadcast production for this season’s ISL, the federation will contribute Rs 5 crore – or 12.5% of the total cost of organising the league in a single leg at a centralised venue – towards operational expenses and leave it up to the clubs to decide on broadcast production.Clubs will also lead discussions and negotiations regarding commercial matters and provide inputs that will be incorporated in the RFP for a commercial partner and broadcaster.“The AIFF is making it easier for the clubs to accept the latest proposal and confirm participation,” a senior official told TOI. “Most of the demands have been accepted and it’s up to them now to make it happen. We’ve agreed on a deferred entry fee since there is revenue shortfall in sponsorship and broadcasting.”AIFF sources said a formal proposal will be sent to the clubs within the next 24-48 hours. Once the clubs confirm, it will seek one-time exemption from Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and write a joint letter to the Union sports ministry for infrastructural and logistical support. The three-member AIFF-ISL coordination committee comprised Kerala Football Association president Navas Meeran, Goa Football Association president Caitano Fernandes and Indian Football Association (West Bengal) secretary Anirban Dutta, with AIFF deputy secretary general M. Satyanarayan as the ex-officio member.

Amid Mustafizur Rahman row, BCB urge ICC to relocate Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India

Bangladesh are set to formally approach the International Cricket Council (ICC) to request the relocation of their T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India to Sri Lanka, following the controversial release of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad. The development comes against the backdrop of worsening political sensitivities between India and Bangladesh, raising concerns within the Bangladesh cricket establishment over player safety and the overall environment for the national team.

BCB to write to ICC amid Mustafizur Rahman controversy

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is expected to submit a detailed representation to the ICC, expressing apprehension about hosting their initial World Cup fixtures in India. Bangladesh are scheduled to play their first three matches of the tournament in Kolkata, a venue now at the center of the controversy.

Following an emergency meeting of BCB directors held via Zoom on Saturday, media committee chairman Amzad Hussain confirmed the board’s intent to escalate the matter. He stated that recent events had forced the board to reconsider whether the team would feel secure playing in Kolkata during a global event of such magnitude.

Bangladesh’s sports adviser Asif Nazrul added further weight to the issue by publicly questioning the safety of Bangladeshi players in India. His remarks came after the Board of Control for Cricket in India cited “recent developments” while instructing the Knight Riders to release Mustafizur ahead of IPL 2026.

Nazrul said he had directed the BCB to explain the entire situation to the ICC and seek a neutral alternative venue. He also suggested that if a contracted Bangladeshi player could not participate in India-based leagues, it would be difficult for the national side to feel fully assured about travelling there for a World Cup.

“I have asked the BCB to explain the entire matter to the ICC. The board should inform that where a Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India despite being contracted, the entire Bangladeshi cricket team cannot feel safe going to play in the World Cup. I have also instructed the Board to request that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be held in Sri Lanka,” Nazrul wrote on his official Facebook page.

Call to move matches to Sri Lanka

In his statement, Nazrul specifically named Sri Lanka as the preferred alternative host for Bangladesh’s matches. He also revealed that he had requested the country’s information and broadcasting ministry to stop telecasting the Indian Premier League in Bangladesh, highlighting the seriousness of the government’s response.

The move underlines how the issue has extended beyond cricket administration into the political and diplomatic sphere, potentially placing the ICC in a challenging position as tournament organizers.

KKR confirm Mustafizur’s release

Following the BCCI’s directive, KKR officially confirmed Mustafizur’s release from their IPL 2026 squad. The franchise had acquired the left-arm pacer for a significant sum at the auction last month, but the signing reportedly drew criticism from certain political and spiritual groups in India in recent days.

BJP bets big on female candidates in BMC polls: Party fields more women than men; 76 candidates make up 55% of its line-up | Mumbai News

Priya Sarvankar Gurav, a candidate from the Shivsena-BJP Alliance, files the nomination for the BMC election 2026

MUMBAI: A closer look at the BJP’s list of 137 candidates for the upcoming BMC elections shows a tilt towards women. Of the total nominees, 76 are women and 61 are men- among the party’s highest-ever representation of women in a civic contest in Mumbai. While 50% of BMC seats are reserved for women, the BJP has gone a step further by fielding female candidates even in open wards. These are traditionally high-stakes seats, often fiercely contested by male party workers, including those who do not fall under any reservation categories such as OBC or ST, which also have designated quotas in the civic polls.Take, for instance, Ward number 57, Goregaon, which is an open seat. Here, the party has once again fielded the former corporator from the ward, Srikala Pillai. Pillai’s father, Ramchandran Pillai, was a 5-term BMC corporator from the Congress party. However, following his demise in 2010, Srikala contested the 2017 municipal elections on a BJP ticket, won, and was nominated again by the party.

76:61: BJP fields more women than men for BMC elections

She said, “I worked for this ward for the past 15 years, and while there was an interview, I was hopeful that the party would renominate me, looking at the work I did.” Party leaders said the decision to field women candidates even from open-category wards was based on local sentiment and winnability. “If a woman candidate is best placed to win, the category of the seat does not matter,” said a senior BJP functionary.Other instances where women candidates were put up include Ward 55, where Marathi film actor Nisha Parulekar was fielded from an open ward in Kandivli. Again, from Ward 98, which includes Khar, former deputy mayor and BJP corporator Alka Kerkar was nominated from an open seat, while from Ward 225, yet again an open seat, Harshita Narwekar of BJP was nominated. Ward 225 includes Fort and Colaba areas.Harshita told TOI municipal elections are all about a connect at a personal level with the voter. “Male or female, the candidate doesn’t matter if you are able to connect with your core voter base and win the seat; the BJP as a party is more than supportive. I am happy that my past work was acknowledged and I was renominated. While there is a friendly fight here, I am sure that I would win the seat,” said Harshita, who contested the 2017 elections from Ward 226 and won. This time the party shifted her to Ward 225, while ward 226 has her brother-in-law, Makrand Narwekar. In Ward 225, there is a friendly fight between Sena’s Sujata Sanap and Narwekar.

Sacred Buddha relics inseparable part of our civilisation: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Calling India not only the custodian of Lord Buddha’s sacred relics but also the living carrier of his tradition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a first-of-itskind international exposition of the Buddha’s Piprahwa relics, reliquaries and gem relics that were recently repatriated to India.Noting that the the departure from India and eventual return of the sacred relics of Buddha are both significant lessons in themselves, PM Modi stressed “slavery is not only political and economic, but it also destroys our heritage”. He remarked that the same happened with the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, which were taken away during colonial rule.

‘Slavery Destroys Heritage’: PM Modi’s Big Message After Unveiling Sacred Buddha Piprahwa Relics

He asserted that “for India, the sacred relics are not merely artefacts; they are a part of our revered heritage and an inseparable part of our civilisation”.PM also reflected on India’s role in spreading the message of Buddha around the world with the sacred relics having travelled from India to different countries with significant Buddhist populations, including Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia and Russia, “where waves of faith and devotion arose” with people turning up to pay homage in large numbers.Speaking at the function organised at Qila Rai Pithora Cultural Complex where he inaugurated the exposition ‘Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One’, PM underlined that this “shared heritage of Lord Buddha is proof that India is not connected merely through politics, diplomacy and economy, but through deeper bonds. We are connected through mind and emotions, through faith and spirituality.”On the site of the exhibition which will be open to public from Sunday, PM said the space reflected India’s glorious history, where nearly a thousand years ago former rulers established a city surrounded by strong and secure walls. He recalled that the sacred relics returned to India after more than 125 years at the intervention of govt and the Godrej Group.Highlighting that Buddha’s Abhidhamma, his words, and his teachings were originally in Pali, PM Modi said, “We are striving to make Pali accessible to the common people. For this reason, Pali has been accorded the status of a classical language, which will make it easier to understand and explain the Dhamma in its original essence.”Striking a personal note, Modi said his birthplace, Vadnagar in Gujarat, was a major centre of Buddhist studies and Sarnath near Varanasi, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, was his karmabhoomi . Modi is MP from Varanasi. He also shared that during his travels to China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia, he carried saplings of the Bodhi tree.

Serial killer who called himself ‘king’: The shadows of ‘cannibal’ Raja Kolander | Lucknow News

Raja Kolander existed on the fringes of India’s criminal imagination — more myth than man. A self-proclaimed “king” and collector of human skulls, his name evoked terror, whispered even in police files. He left behind a trail of horror: human remains buried in fields, allegations of “cannibalism”, and a man who decided who lived and who died. Obsessed with power, Kolander was accused of targeting victims with chilling precision and allegedly consuming their “brains”, creating one of India’s darkest criminal sagas. But before the skulls, before the journalist’s murder, before the nation recoiled in horror, two young men vanished on a cold January evening in 2000.

Lucknow Headlines Today — The Biggest Updates You Need to Know.

Their names: Manoj Kumar Singh and Ravi Srivastava. For 25 years, their case drifted through the corridors of India’s criminal justice system — delayed, fragmented, and nearly forgotten. The breakthrough was neither a confession nor a dramatic eyewitness account. It was a simple brown coat, recovered from a village home in Prayagraj, that spoke the loudest. A Lucknow court has finally brought closure to this long, haunting story.

Raja Kolander

A Journey That Never ReturnedOn January 24, 2000, 22-year-old Manoj Kumar Singh, son of Shiv Harsh Singh, left Lucknow in his car, driven by Ravi Srivastava. Along the way, they picked up six passengers, including a woman, from the bustling Charbagh railway station area. It was an unremarkable decision, a routine choice made by thousands every day.Their last known stop was in Harchandpur, Rae Bareli district, where the vehicle paused for tea. Shiv Harsh Singh’s brother, Shiv Shankar Singh, would later testify in court that he spoke to Manoj and Ravi during this brief halt. Something felt off — one of the passengers appeared ill. That fleeting moment would become the last known sighting of the two men.The vehicle disappeared. So did its occupants.Shankargarh Forest: Where Fear Took FormThree days later, when Manoj and Ravi failed to return, a missing persons report was filed at Naka police station in Lucknow. A search ensued, but the trail had gone cold. The families’ worst fears were soon confirmed. The mutilated bodies of Manoj Kumar Singh and Ravi Srivastava were recovered from the dense Shankargarh forest area in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). Post-mortems confirmed murder. The vehicle was missing. The crime scene yielded almost no clues, and the investigation appeared stalled. The Brown Coat That SpokeThe case, which had remained shrouded in mystery for over two decades, might have continued to baffle investigators if not for one seemingly ordinary item: a brown coat. This unremarkable garment, recovered from the residence of Raja Kolander in Ram Sagar village, Prayagraj, would become the key that finally unlocked the truth. The coat was identified by Shiv Shankar Singh as belonging to Manoj Kumar Singh, the young man who had vanished on that fateful January day. Adding undeniable authenticity, the tailor’s label stitched inside matched a shop in Rae Bareli, confirming that Manoj had been wearing it when he left home.In the courtroom, the prosecution highlighted the coat’s extraordinary significance, describing it as “a silent witness that ultimately spoke the loudest.”Its quiet, unassuming presence had silently preserved the story of that tragic day, bridging the gap between decades of investigative dead ends and the eventual unraveling of a case that had haunted families and authorities alike. What seemed like a simple piece of clothing turned out to be the linchpin in exposing one of India’s darkest criminal sagas.

Brown coat: The silent witness

Witnesses And Courtroom RevelationsTwelve witnesses were examined. Shiv Shankar Singh provided a meticulous account of the victims’ last known movements and the suspicious passengers they had picked up. He testified that Raja Kolander, his wife Phoolan Devi, and others were present in the vehicle and later identified them in court.Amar Nath Singh, another witness, claimed he had seen the accused on the day of the incident and alleged that they confessed during police interrogation. The court concluded that the evidence pointed unmistakably to a premeditated crime involving kidnapping, robbery, and murder.According to the prosecution, the accused abducted Manoj and Ravi, along with their Tata Sumo vehicle, looted them, murdered them cruelly, and dumped their bodies in the forests of Allahabad to prevent identification and destroy evidence.“We examined 12 witnesses, including complainant Shiv Shankar Singh, who provided critical details about the last known movements of the victims and the suspicious passengers. The evidence pointed to a premeditated crime involving kidnapping, robbery, and murder,” said the counsel.Audacity And Horror: Why The Court Showed No MercyThe defence argued for leniency. Raja Kolander, they said, was now aged and had cooperated during the trial. Bachhraj Kol, they argued, had been a juvenile at the time and came from an impoverished background. The court rejected both arguments. The meticulous planning, the cold execution, and the ruthless concealment of the crime outweighed age or circumstance. The offence, committed with clear common intention, displayed audacity and danger that could not be ignored.A Professionally Executed Crime Meets Its VerdictRam Niranjan Kol, alias Raja Kolander, and his accomplice Bachhraj Kol were convicted for the abduction and murder of Manoj Kumar Singh and Ravi Srivastava. Special Judge Rohit Singh described the acts as a “professionally executed and organised criminal conspiracy.”Both convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 2.5 lakh each. Eighty percent of the fine will be compensated to the victims’ families, with the remainder going to the state government to cover legal costs. The prosecution had sought the death penalty, citing the brutality and convicts’ criminal history. The court declined, ruling that while the crime was heinous, it did not meet the “rarest of rare” criteria.“These are not ordinary individuals,” the judge observed, calling the convicts “undoubtedly dangerous and audacious,” while rejecting pleas for leniency.Legal ChargesRaja Kolander and Bachhraj Kol were found guilty under multiple IPC sections:

  • Section 364 (kidnapping with intent to murder)
  • Section 396 (dacoity with murder)
  • Section 201 (destruction of evidence)
  • Section 412 (dishonestly receiving property obtained from dacoity)
  • Section 404 (misappropriation of property of the deceased)

All offences were read with Section 34, establishing common intention.Raja Kolander: A Man Who Crowned Himself KingRam Niranjan Kol was not an ordinary accused.A resident of eastern Uttar Pradesh and a member of the Kol tribal community, he was once employed at an ordnance factory. Over time, he withdrew from conventional society and began constructing a private universe governed by power and punishment. He renamed himself Raja Kolander — king of all. His wife was named Phoolan Devi. His sons were called Adalat (court) and Zamanat (bail). Institutions of law were absorbed into his delusion of sovereignty.By the time Manoj and Ravi disappeared, Kolander’s name already carried a sense of menace.A Familiar Name In A Darker CaseBy 2012, Kolander was already infamous. He and his brother-in-law Vakshraj were convicted for the cold-blooded murder of journalist Dhirendra Singh. The victim had been lured, shot, mutilated, and buried.Police recovered 14 human skulls from Kolander’s farmhouse, shocking the nation. Allegations of cannibalism circulated widely, though never proven in court. His reputation as a serial offender and skull collector became ingrained in public consciousness, making him one of India’s most chilling criminals.Collector Of Skulls: Raja Kolander’s Reign Of TerrorRaja Kolander etched his name into the annals of India’s darkest criminal history, horrifying the nation with allegations of cold-blooded murder, cannibalism, and the grotesque collection of human skulls. Obsessed with power, he was said to stalk his victims with terrifying precision, and whispers of him consuming their brains turned him into a figure of nightmares. His crimes were not mere acts of violence—they were a chilling saga of fear, obsession, and horror that haunted communities for decades, marking one of the most sinister chapters in India’s criminal lore.Police investigations revealed a gruesome pattern: Kolander would allegedly kill people over trivial disputes, dismember their bodies, and dispose of the remains in lakes, rivers, or forests. In most cases, he reportedly kept the skulls as trophies, claiming he would “eat the brains” before hanging the heads in his home—a macabre collection that transformed his residence into a chamber of nightmares. What the Case Leaves BehindTwenty-five years after Manoj Kumar Singh and Ravi Srivastava left Lucknow, justice finally arrived — late, scarred, and incomplete, but arrived nonetheless. The Raja Kolander case is a reminder that some crimes are not solved by spectacle or notoriety but by patience, persistence, and evidence. Sometimes the truth does not scream. Sometimes, it whispers from a brown coat, a small detail waiting decades to be heard. And sometimes, evil leaves a trail that, no matter how buried, cannot escape the law forever.

His standout moment came in the 2025 Asia Cup final against Pakistan, where an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls clinched a five-wicket victory and earned Player of the Match honours. Earlier back-to-back T20I centuries against South Africa in late 2024 had already marked him as a clutch performer, pushing his overall T20I tally to 1183 runs in 40 matches at an average near 49. Varma also featured in recent ODIs against South Africa in December 2025, signaling intent for white-ball expansion, with five ODIs under his belt.

Delhi’s 25-year-old right-hander debuted in ODIs against West Indies in December 2024, quickly becoming a mainstay with 1110 runs in 24 matches at 50.45 average, featuring two tons and seven fifties at a strike rate above 82. Her 2025 highlight was the Women’s ODI World Cup, where she scored 308 runs in six innings at 51.33, including a match-winning 122 against New Zealand, before an ankle injury in the Bangladesh game ruled her out of knockouts. Rawal’s poise in partnerships, like her debut 110-run stand with Smriti Mandhana, and all-round contributions with wickets underscore her versatility. As 2026 unfolds, Uthappa’s endorsements position Varma and Rawal as key to India’s dominance, blending flair and reliability in high-stakes cricket.
