NEW DELHI: A day after Congress announced that the nationwide ‘MGNREGA Bachao Sangram’ will be conducted from Jan 8 to Feb 25, rural development minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called the opposition party’s campaign a ‘Bhrashtachaar Bachao Sangram’ and accused Congress of spreading misinformation and falsehoods on Viksit Bharat- Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act.Addressing a press conference in the capital, Chouhan alleged that corruption was rampant in MGNREGA and claimed that ‘VB-G RAM G’ scheme is better and several steps ahead of MGNREGA. “MGNREGA had ceased to be a symbol of honest employment. More than 1.091 million complaints were registered through social audits conducted in gram sabhas,” he pointed out.The minister highlighted that contractors were carrying out work in the name of labourers, wages were withdrawn by showing machine-based work and the same roads were shown as ‘new’ year-after-year. He also highlighted that around 30% of workers were above 60; instances of 80-year-old “labourers” and fake attendance records were also found.“Over Rs 8.48 lakh crore has been spent on rural development so far under Modi govt, compared to only Rs 2 lakh crore during UPA regime,” Chouhan said. He also questioned if permanent assets were created in villages and the lives of villagers and workers truly improved because of money spent by the earlier regime.Chouhan said ‘VB-G RAM G’ is a “corruption-free, technology-driven and worker-centric reform”. The focus now will be on concrete development works such as water conservation, roads, schools, hospitals and natural disaster management. He said this is not the time for agitation but for cooperation and “Congress should stop misleading the nation and spreading falsehoods”.Meanwhile, Congress on Sunday announced the setting up of a coordination committee to “oversee, guide and monitor implementation of ‘MGNREGA Bachao Sangram’, with senior party functionary Ajay Maken as its convenor. The nationwide campaign will demand withdrawal of VB G RAM G Act, restoration of MGNREGA as a rights-based law, and right to work and empowerment of panchayats. Senior Congress functionaries Jairam Ramesh, Sandeep Dikshit, Udit Raj and Priyank Kharge are members of the panel constituted by party president Malikarjun Kharge.

MUMBAI: Former Australian skipper Meg Lanning was on Sunday named the captain of UP Warriorz ahead of the Women’s Premier League beginning January 9.The legendary Australian was the captain of Delhi Capitals for the first three editions of the competition, having led them to each of the summit clashes but finished on the losing end.

“The Capri Sports-owned UP Warriorz announced the appointment of Australian legend Meg Lanning as captain of the franchise ahead of the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season,” the franchise said in a statement.Lanning was signed by UP Warriorz for Rs 1.9 crore at the auction.As an Australian player, she is a seven-time World Cup winner which includes two ODI titles and five T20 titles.“As the UP Warriorz enters a new phase of their journey, Lanning’s appointment underscores the franchise’s focus on experience and composure at the leadership level,” the franchise said.UP Warriorz have undergone an overhaul ahead of this year’s WPL having finished third in the inaugural edition in 2023, fourth in 2024 and fifth in the 2025 iteration.“As the WPL enters its fourth season, it’s been incredible to see how the league has evolved, the quality of cricket, the competitiveness, and the emergence of exciting new talent continue to raise the standard each year,” Lanning said.“This is a talented group with a strong mix of international experience and Indian players, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead,” she added.Former India player and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who is now the head coach of UP Warriorz said, “Meg brings a rare combination of experience, clarity, and calmness that sets her apart as a leader.”The WPL will be held across two legs this year, with the first phase in Navi Mumbai from January 9-17 followed by the second at Vadodara from January 19 to February 5.

Mumbai: Air quality across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has deteriorated sharply since the start of the new year, with average Air Quality Index (AQI) slipping from the ‘satisfactory’ to ‘moderate’ — and in some pockets, even ‘poor’ — category over the last four days. Mumbai recorded an average AQI of 140 on Sunday, up from 106 on Saturday and significantly higher than 79 on Friday and 90 on Thursday. Thane city also saw a steady worsening, with its average AQI rising to 124 from 82 on Jan 1, while Navi Mumbai, which had recorded AQIs of 99 and 86 on Jan 1 and 2, respectively, deteriorated sharply to an average of 151 by Sunday. Environmental experts attributed the worsening air quality to a combination of unfavourable winter conditions and persistent dust pollution.Several localities reported pollution levels well above the city averages. In Mumbai, Byculla recorded the highest AQI at 184, followed by the area around the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 167, placing both at the higher end of the ‘moderate’ category. In Navi Mumbai, air quality slipped into the ‘poor’ category in some areas, with Nerul recording an AQI of 206 and Sanpada emerging as the most polluted locality at 215.AQI is a concentration of toxic particulate matter PM2.5 or PM10 in the air, whichever is higher. As per the Central Pollution Control Board’s classification, AQI readings of up to 50 is considered good, 51–100 satisfactory, 101–200 moderate, 201–300 poor, 301–400 very poor, and above 400 severe.Prolonged exposure to ‘moderate’ category air can cause minor respiratory discomfort, particularly among sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing lung or heart conditions. Breathing ‘poor’ air — such as the levels recorded in Nerul and Sanpada on Sunday — can cause breathing discomfort to most people, especially with prolonged exposure.Bhagwan Kesbhat, CEO of environmental organisation Waatavaran, said falling temperatures within the winter months cause pollutants to get trapped closer to the ground. “Without clear skies and adequate wind movement, dispersion becomes difficult and pollution levels rise sharply,” he said. Kesbhat added that the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have claimed to have taken steps to curb dust emissions from construction sites — which contribute nearly 30% of the city’s pollution load — but data over several years shows that the share of construction dust in Mumbai’s overall air pollution has largely remained unchanged.
