Mumbai: Man duped of Rs 14.65 lakh in ‘black paper to currency’ scam | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old Pune-based share market consultant was duped of ₹14.65 lakh by a man who impersonated as an official from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and under pretext to convert black paper into genuine currency notes using chemicals. The Matunga police have registered an FIR of cheating on the complaint filed by Akshay Khade, who is physically disabled and works in share market . Khade told police that he first met the accused, Arvind Baban Lambe, in 2017 and reconnected with him in 2024 through Facebook.According to the police, Lambe called Khade to Mumbai in November 2024 and introduced him to Vikas Shinde and another unidentified man at a hotel near Dadar railway station. The trio allegedly claimed they were RBI officials and demonstrated a process in which black paper dipped in liquid appeared to transform into ₹500 currency notes. To gain Khade’s confidence, the notes were deposited in a bank and confirmed to be genuine.Believing the claim, Khade paid ₹1.5 lakh in cash for the chemicals and papers. When the process failed at home, the accused later offered a larger deal, promising ₹47 lakh in exchange for ₹15 lakh. Khade allegedly arranged ₹10 lakh from friends and handed it over at Dadar station in December last year. An additional ₹3.15 lakh was transferred via NEFT, while another woman allegedly paid ₹50,000 directly to the accused. When the accused stopped responding, the matter reached the police. During questioning at Tulinj and Achole police stations, Lambe allegedly admitted to cheating and promised to return his money. Khade has now sought legal action against Lambe, Shinde and the unidentified accomplice. Police are verifying the allegations and financial trail.

Suspicious timing! Mystery trader makes $436,000 predicting Maduro’s capture by US – did the bettor have access to classified information?

Suspicious timing! Mystery trader makes $436,000 predicting Maduro’s capture by US - did the bettor have access to classified information?

What if someone knows what is about to happen and bets on it? This is just what many people are wondering after a mystery trader walked away with a payout of more than $436,000 from an online prediction market, after US announced the capture of Venezuela’s former President, Nicolas Maduro, according to CBS news.An anonymous user on cryptocurrency-based prediction platform, Polymarket, placed a wager of roughly $32,000 on Maduro’s removal from power shortly before US President Donald Trump publicly announced that US forces had ousted the former Venezuelan leader. The timing of the bet has raised serious concerns among legal and financial experts about whether the trader may have had access to inside information, and what it means for the integrity of such platforms.

Venezuela Orders Arrests as Maduro Faces U.S. Court & Diaspora Celebrates His Capture

Here’s what happened:

The bettor, whose account appeared to have been created in December, staked $32,537 on the outcome that Maduro would be “out by January 31, 2026.” The speculative bet was placed just before Trump posted on Truth Social at 4.21 am on Saturday announcing Maduro’s arrest. That single wager ultimately paid out more than $436,000, according to market data, prompting scrutiny over whether the trade was placed with knowledge of a classified US operation to seize Maduro and his wife. The bettor had also placed many other bets surrounding Venezuela.

The win sounds sus…

Experts told CBS news that several red flags point to the possibility of insider knowledge. “It clearly suggests that the bettor did have access to inside information,” said Dennis Kelleher, co-founder and chief executive of Better Markets, a non-partisan financial reform advocacy group. “This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information. It happened very late, right before the very event they were betting on happened; it was a relatively large amount of money; and it happened in a market that is not really regulated and where there is no transparency. The same Polymarket account also placed three additional wagers closely linked to US action against Venezuela: a $1,000 bet that the US would invade Venezuela by January 31; a $250 wager that Trump would invoke the War Powers Act against Venezuela by the same date; and a $146 bet predicting that US forces would land in Venezuela before the end of the month. “It was a new account only betting on issues around the Venezuelan president’s potential removal from office — there are a lot of telltale signs that make it seem like insider trading,” Stephen Piepgrass, a regulatory attorney at Troutman Pepper told CBS news.

Polymarket

Polymarket, a New York-based prediction market that recently secured a $2 billion investment from stock exchange operator Intercontinental Exchange, did not respond to requests for comment on the Maduro-related wagers. The platform is currently seeking regulatory approval to operate in the United States. However, company chief executive Shayne Coplan has previously acknowledged that insiders can influence prediction markets. Speaking to CBS news he said that insiders “having an edge to the market is a good thing”. “Obviously, you need to curate them and you need to be really clear and stringent on where the line is drawn and, like, sort of ethics, and we spend a lot of time on that. But it’s sort of an inevitability that this will happen, and there’s a lot of benefits from it. And, you know, people will adapt,” he told 60 Minutes’ Anderson Cooper. The controversy has also drawn attention to the broader regulatory gaps surrounding prediction markets. Oversight of such platforms falls under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which also regulates similar services such as Kalshi. Legal experts told CBS news that the Maduro wager could potentially violate the Commodity Exchange Act, which governs futures and options trading and prohibits betting on events related to assassination, terrorism and war. Kelleher warned that the episode exposes broader risks for everyday users of prediction markets. “Consumers and investors should know that these are totally unregulated, non-transparent markets and that the odds of losing money are incredibly high,” he said.

SIR verification: EC summons Mohammad Shami in Kolkata; cricketer seeks fresh dates
Mohammed Shami (ANI image)

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has asked Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to appear in Kolkata for a hearing under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The hearing has now been rescheduled after Shami cited professional commitments.Shami was originally called to appear on Monday at a school in Jadavpur along with his brother Mohammed Kaif for voter verification. However, the pacer could not attend as he is currently in Rajkot, representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Following his request, the Election Commission agreed to give fresh dates and the hearing will now be held between January 9 and 11.Officials said Shami is a registered voter of Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Ward 93, which falls under the Rashbehari constituency. According to the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer’s office, the hearing was required after discrepancies were found in the Enumeration Form submitted by Shami and his brother.“The Enumeration Form was incorrectly filled out by the cricketer and his brother, because of which they were called for the hearing,” an official said.Though originally from Uttar Pradesh, Shami has lived in Kolkata for several years due to his cricketing career. He moved to the city at a young age, trained under former Bengal Ranji captain Sambaran Bandyopadhyay and later earned a place in Bengal’s under-22 team. The development comes amid the Special Intensive Revision exercise in West Bengal, which has seen several celebrities being issued hearing notices, placing them on the same footing as ordinary voters. Apart from Shami, actor and Trinamool Congress MP Dev and actor couple Laboni Sarkar and Kaushik Bandyopadhyay, have also been called or identified during the process.Election officials said the SIR exercise is aimed at correcting voter records and ensuring accuracy. Aluminum Foil Health Risks: Do you use aluminum foil to store or bake food? Doctor explains when you need to be cautious |

Do you use aluminum foil or aluminium containers to store cooked food? If yes, you’re definitely not alone. Many of us wrap leftover rotis, cover curries, or pack lunch in aluminium foil because it feels quick, neat, and convenient. It’s been part of everyday kitchen habits for years, especially when we want to keep food warm, fresh, or easy to carry. But have you ever paused to wonder if this common practice is actually good for your health? Why vitamin deficiencies often show up on your face or hairWeight loss food for women: 7 high-protein foods women can find anywhereMost of the time, we think, “It’s just food storage, what could go wrong?” After all, aluminum foil is easily available, lightweight, and doesn’t break like glass. But the way we use it matters more than we realise.

Why does it matter?

The fish roasted with Al foil recorded unsafe levels of metals. As per a study published in December 2024 in the Food Bioscience journal metals leached from aluminium foil into Clarias gariepinus muscles roasted at high temperatures. “According to redundancy analysis, foil area had the most influence on metal leaching. The percentage weight loss of the foil after fish roasting indicates leaching of its metal contents into the fish,” the researchers said.Another study estimated the degree of aluminum leakage from aluminum foil during baking process. The researchers found that aluminum content in the baked food, comprising Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, mackerel Scomber scombrus, duck breasts, cheese Hermelín, tomato, paprika, Carlsbad dumplings, pork roast, pork neck, chicken breasts, and chicken thighs increased by 40 times.

Aluminum foil use pros and cons

Dr. Chhaya Vaja, Internal Medicine Expert, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Mumbai says there is a safety concern regarding these storage methods. Unfortunately, these methods can do more harm than good. These methods may lead to a plethora of health issues. Hence, it is necessary to store food the right way. “Aluminum tends to react with acidic and salty foods such as tomatoes, lemon, vinegar, pickles, and spicy gravies. When these foods are cooked or stored in aluminum foil or containers, some amount of aluminum may mix into the food. Excess aluminum intake over long periods may lead to bone problems, kidney strain, and nerve-related issues, especially in people with kidney disease, where the body cannot easily remove aluminum. Using damaged, scratched, or thin aluminum containers may also increase the chances of leaching. Wrapping hot food directly in foil and storing it for long hours can further raise the risk of aluminium exposure,” the doctor warns.

Safety measures

Dr. Chhaya urges us not to use aluminum foil or a container for daily cooking or long-term storage. She advises: Avoid wrapping or cooking acidic, salty, or spicy foods in foil. Use steel, glass, or ceramic containers for storing cooked food. If using aluminum foil for baking or grilling, place butter paper or baking paper between the food and the foil so that the aluminum doesn’t come in direct contact with the food. Don’t reuse disposable aluminum containers, and avoid cooking food at very high temperatures directly in foil.Adhere to safe storage methods instead of getting influenced by any trend on social media that promotes aluminum foil and container usage. Be attentive when it comes to your well-being, and don’t follow any food storage methods blindly. Try to take help from an expert when it comes to appropriate storage methods. This will help you to avoid health issues linked to wrong storage methods.

Apple executives are ‘booking extended hotel stays’ in South Korea and the reason is Samsung and SK Hynix

Apple executives are 'booking extended hotel stays' in South Korea and the reason is Samsung and SK Hynix
Tech giants, including Apple, are reportedly camping out in South Korean hotels to secure crucial memory chip supplies. A global shortage, driven by AI demand, has sent RAM prices soaring, forcing companies to negotiate long-term contracts. This situation could lead to higher iPhone prices or reduced memory in future models.

Apple has stationed executives in South Korean hotels near Samsung and SK Hynix factories. The iPhone maker is desperately trying to secure long-term memory chip supplies amid a worsening global shortage. RAM prices have skyrocketed by as much as 300% since mid-2025, forcing tech giants to take extraordinary measures.According to The Korea Economic Daily, Apple’s purchasing teams have taken up semi-permanent residence at hotels in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. They’re positioned within striking distance of Samsung and SK Hynix’s semiconductor plants. The goal is to negotiate two- to three-year contracts for LPDDR5X RAM needed in upcoming iPhone models. A 12GB memory module now costs Apple approximately $70 per unit. That’s a staggering 230% increase from early 2025 prices.

Tech Giants camp out as memory suppliers hold all the cards

Apple isn’t alone in its Korean hotel marathon. Dell, Google, and Amazon executives have also established extended stays in the region. Local media describes this as a “semiconductor boom” for South Korea’s hospitality industry. Business hotels like the Doubletree and Nine Tree in Pangyo have seen surging demand for long-term accommodations. The memory manufacturers aren’t budging on long-term agreements. Samsung and SK Hynix are sticking to quarterly contracts. They anticipate continued price increases through 2027. Both, according to The Korea Economic Daily, are supplying server DRAM in Q1 2026 at a respective 60-70% rise over Q4 2025 supplies.

AI demand creates perfect storm for memory shortage

The crisis is a result of the unabated demand by AI companies for HBM3E-a stacked memory built by stacking DRAM chips. This type of memory is manufactured by stacking DRAM chips. Nvidia’s H200 AI accelerator requires eight HBM3E units each. Chinese customers alone have placed approximately $3 billion in new orders since receiving US export approval. This production priority has created severe shortages of standard server and mobile DRAM.According to industry analyst Jukan, memory now makes up more than 20% of smartphone production costs, up from around 15% a few quarters ago. One potential consequence of the shortage is that it could force Apple to raise the price of its iPhones or ship models with less RAM. The company’s efficient iOS architecture and higher profit margins, however, may make it better placed to weather the disruption than its competitors.

BMC polls: In R South, women-reserved seats trigger high-stakes family contests | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: It will be interesting to watch the contest in the lone electoral ward of the R South administrative division that was earlier held by the Congress but later slipped into the hands of the Shiv Sena following the disqualification of the sitting corporator over his caste certificate. Now reserved for women, the ward has turned into a battle between families, with the Congress fielding Ajanta Yadav, wife of former corporator Rajpati Yadav, against Vrushali Hundare, daughter of Shiv Sena (deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s party) ex-corporator Eknath Hundare, as both parties attempt to reclaim the seat.In the saffron-dominated division, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is aiming to retain its two seats by once again fielding candidates from families that have historically won here. The BJP, meanwhile, has reshuffled its slate — replacing five of its 10 candidates while retaining the remaining five or their family members — in a bid to maintain its dominance.

-

Rajpati Yadav had won Ward No. 28 in the 2017 elections but was later disqualified over issues related to his caste certificate. Following his removal, Eknath Hundare, who had secured the second-highest number of votes, was declared the winner. With the seat now reserved for women, Ajanta Yadav is contesting on a Congress ticket, while Vrushali Hundare has been fielded by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Adding another dimension to the contest, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has also nominated a candidate from the ward, a move that could split the Sena vote and potentially benefit Ajanta Yadav.Another keenly watched contest is unfolding in Ward No. 25, which includes Thakur Village, Samta Nagar and Janupada. BJP candidate Nisha Parulekar-Bangera had narrowly lost to Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Madhuri Bhoir by fewer than 400 votes in the 2017 elections. This time, Sena (UBT) has opted for a cautious strategy by fielding Yogesh Bhoir, Madhuri Bhoir’s husband and a former corporator elected in 2012. The Mahayuti alliance has retained Parulekar as its candidate, despite both BJP’s Devang Dave and Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s Shekhar Shere vying for the ticket — underscoring internal friction within the alliance.Party insiders pointed out that Parulekar, also the only actor contesting the BMC elections this time, had lost in 2017 despite BJP dominance in the ward’s high-rise pockets, and added that she is not a local resident. Dave, who has long been associated with the party’s election management, issued a public statement announcing his decision not to contest, saying hewas respecting the party’s call despite the “pain and disappointment” felt by many supporters.Despite north Mumbai largely remaining a saffron stronghold, Mumbai Congress spokesperson Sureshchandra Rajhans expressed confidence that the party would win at least 12 of the more than 30 seats across three administrative divisions. Contesting for the first time from Ward No. 26, Rajhans is pitted against BJP’s Pritam Pandagale. He claimed that strong anti-incumbency sentiment on the ground would work in his favour. The R South ward is among Mumbai’s suburbanpockets witnessing rapid real estate growth, with high-rise buildings coming up in areas far from railway stations. This accelerated expansion, coupled with high population density, has placed enormous strain on infrastructure that has failed to keep pace. The effects are evident in worsening traffic congestion and shrinking roads struggling to meet rising demand. While rail and metro connectivity has expanded, last-mile connectivity remains a major concern.Several slum pockets and rehabilitation buildings continue to face challenges in accessing basic amenities, including adequate water supply, according to local politicians from both the ruling party and the opposition. The region is expanding not only vertically but also horizontally, with population growth driven by encroachments near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the development of large private land parcels.Highlighting the uneven distribution of resources, Charkop MLA Yogesh Sagar said newer private buildings, slum rehabilitation and cluster redevelopment projects are being granted higher FSI, but infrastructure upgrade has lagged. “Uneven waterdistribution remains a chronic problem in these suburban areas, as the BMC has not increased water supply in proportion to the growing population,” he said, adding that many rehabilitation buildings lack fire compliance and are occupied without occupancy certificates.Several of these newly developed pockets lie nearly three kilometres from railway stations or the Western Express Highway, placing further pressure on existing infrastructure. During peak hours, commuting remains a challenge due to traffic congestion and a shortage of autos and BEST buses.

Big call, poor returns: Arjun Tendulkar’s opening move backfires in Vijay Hazare Trophy | Cricket News

Big call, poor returns: Arjun Tendulkar's opening move backfires in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Arjun Tendulkar (PTI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Goa’s experiment of promoting all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar, son of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, to open the innings has failed to yield results in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.Arjun opened the innings for the third consecutive match and once again failed to make an impact with the bat. Opening against Punjab, he faced eight deliveries and scored just one run before being dismissed by Sukhdeep Bajwa.

Ian Bishop press conference: ‘Batters have always been seen as heroes and bowlers as villains’

Earlier in the tournament, Arjun opened the innings for the first time against Mumbai and managed 24 runs, before following it up with scores of 8 against Uttarakhand and 19 against Sikkim.

Arjun Tendulkar’s last four matches:

Match Batting Bowling
Goa vs Uttarakhand 8 0/54
Goa vs Mumbai 24 0/78
Goa vs Sikkim 19 0/49
Goa vs Himachal 1* 0/58

Recently, Yograj Singh, father of former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, claimed that Arjun is being coached incorrectly.Yograj said that while significant emphasis has been placed on Arjun’s bowling, the 25-year-old is, in fact, a proper batter. During a recent interaction, Yograj revealed details of his conversation with Arjun, alleging that the all-rounder did not get enough opportunities to bat before attending a camp at his academy. The 67-year-old added that after spending around a week batting at his academy, Arjun went on to score a century on his Ranji Trophy debut.“They are focusing on his bowling; I don’t know what is wrong with the coaches. Basically, he is a batter. When he came to my academy for a camp, I was asked to take care of him. One day, he was hit by a ball and I took him to the hospital. He was fine after that. I told him to put on his pads, but he said that they don’t give him the chance to bat,” Yograj said on Ravishh Bisht’s YouTube channel.Yograj also revealed that he had requested Arjun’s former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Mumbai Indians, to allow him to open the innings in a few matches, but the request was turned down.“I told him that I had never seen him bat, so we went to the indoor nets. He was on fire, hitting balls all across the park. I asked his coach, ‘Why don’t you give him the chance to bat?’ but he was making excuses. I also told him that he is a proper batter and he plays like his father. So, Arjun batted at my academy for a week and went on to score a hundred in the Ranji Trophy days later. Even when he was playing for Mumbai Indians, I had asked the management to make him open for a few games, but they didn’t listen,” he added.
