Voter list row: Sonia Gandhi seeks time to reply; calls records decades old

NEW DELHI: Senior counsel appearing for Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday sought time from a Delhi court to file a reply in a revision petition challenging the inclusion of her name in the electoral rolls. The panel has cited that the records in question are several decades old. The court has now listed the matter for further hearing on February 7.The case is being heard by the Rouse Avenue Court, which had issued notices to the Delhi Police and Sonia Gandhi last month on a revision petition filed by advocate Vikas Tripathi. Tripathi alleged that Gandhi’s name was included in the voter list for 1980–81 before she formally became an Indian citizen. His complaint seeking registration of an FIR was earlier dismissed by an additional chief judicial magistrate.

The revision petition challenges that dismissal. During an earlier hearing, Tripathi’s counsel argued that the matter required reconsideration, claiming there were serious irregularities in the manner in which Gandhi’s name appeared in the electoral rolls before she acquired Indian citizenship. He alleged that the name was first entered in 1980, later deleted and then re-entered in 1983 based on an application filed in January that year. After hearing the submissions, Sessions Judge Gogne issued notices to the respondents, including Sonia Gandhi and sought their responses. The magistrate, while rejecting Tripathi’s complaint at the threshold, had held that it was based only on uncertified photocopies of old electoral records and lacked legal merit. The court had also observed that issues relating to citizenship and electoral rolls fall within the jurisdiction of the central government and the Election Commission of India and cannot be decided through a criminal complaint.Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had dismissed the allegations against her mother as false, asserting that Sonia Gandhi voted only after acquiring Indian citizenship. “Do they have any evidence? This is an absolute lie. She voted only after she became a citizen (of India). I don’t know why they are after her, even though she is about to turn 80. She has dedicated her whole life to serving the nation. She should be spared at her age now,” Gandhi said.

Gold price prediction today: Where are gold & prices headed in the near-term? Check outlook

Gold price prediction today: Where are gold & prices headed in the near-term? Check outlook
Gold may test the resistance at $4550. Dip buying is the favoured strategy. (AI image)

Gold price prediction today: Gold prices are expected to continue their rally as demand for safe haven assets picks up, says Praveen Singh, Senior Fundamental Research Analyst- Currencies and Commodities at Mirae Asset Sharekhan. Here’s his outlook on gold prices:Gold Performance:

  • Spot gold attracted safe haven bids on Monday, i.e., January 5 and surged more than 2.5% as the US President Trump capturing and removing Venezuelan leader Maduro heightened geopolitical risks that other countries with strained relations with could also be targeted.
  • The metal surged to $4456, highest in a week.
  • At the time of writing this article, spot gold was changing hands at $4445, up 2.65% for the day, while the MCX February contract at Rs 137,997 was up 1.65%.
  • Earlier, the shiny metal tumbled over 4% in the week ending January 2 on profit booking and margin hike related selloff.

Geopolitics watch:

  • Maduro’s forcible removal has ignited a fresh wave of geopolitical concern, especially among nations whose relations with the United States have historically been uneasy. Many view the episode through the long arc of US interventionism in Latin America—from early 20th‑century regime changes to Cold War–era interventions—raising fears that countries deemed unfriendly to Washington could face similar pressure.
  • The US operation in Venezuela serves as a stark reminder of Washington’s apparent revival of the Monroe Doctrine, first articulated in 1823 to oppose external powers’ influence in the Western Hemisphere and later invoked throughout the 20th century to justify strategic interventions.
  • The Venezuela Episode signals a clear message to contemporary rivals such as China and Russia: The Western Hemisphere remains firmly within the traditional US sphere of influence.
  • Geopolitical risks loom large: The US President Trump has threatened military action against Colombia as he accused the nation of selling cocaine to the US.
  • Trump has once again expressed interest in Greenland as a strategic region for the US interests.
  • US Treasury of State Marco Rubio, in a show on NBC on Sunday, called Cuba a huge problem.
  • Many Chinese social media users opined that the Venezuelan operation offers a template for how China could handle the Taiwan issue.

Data roundup:

  • US ISM manufacturing Index fell to 47.90 in December from 48.20 in November; the data trailed the estimate of 48.20; thus, contracted more than expected. Manufacturing contracted for the tenth straight month as it suffered the worst contraction since October 2025. ISM prices remained elevated at 58.50 while new orders and employment contracted.
  • China’s RatingDog PMI composite at 51.30 in December beat the prior reading of 51.2 as Services Index in December at 52 remained encouraging.

Upcoming data:

  • Major US data on tap this week include ISM services Index (January 7), JOLTs job openings (January 7), nonfarm payroll report (January 9) and University of Michigan sentiment and inflation readings (Jan. 9).
  • China’s PPI and CPI for the month of December will be released on January 9. China will update its forex reserves data on January 7; it will update its gold holdings also in the process.
  • Major Eurozone on the deck include Services PMI (January 6), CPI (January 7) and retail sales (Jan. 9).
  • UK’s services and composite PMIs will be out on January 6.
  • Richmond Fed President Barkin will speak on economic outlook and monetary policy at Raleigh Chamber Economic Forecast 2026:

Fedspeak:

  • Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said Monday that interest rates may be close to a neutral level for the US economy now. He added that incoming data should guide the central bank’s actions.

Dollar Index and yields:

  • At the time of writing this article, the US Dollar Index was trading at 98.60, up around 0.20% for the day.
  • 2-Year US yields were down by 1 bps to 3.46%, while ten-year yields fell 2 bps to 4.17%.

ETF holdings and COMEX inventory:

  • As of January 2, total known global gold ETF holdings stood at 98.84 MOz, down 0.1 MOz for the week, though holdings hover around the highest level since September 2022.
  • Registered COMEX gold inventory remained unchanged at 19.362 MOz for the seventh straight day as of January 2.

COMEX Gold delivery:

  • COMEX gold delivery amounted to 369 units in the week ending January 2, lowest weekly delivery volume since the third week of September.

CFTC data:

  • Updated CFTC data shows that investors are increasing their net longs in several commodities, most notably of which are gold, gasoline, copper and silver as they increase their net long positions on commodities currencies like Brazilian Real and Mexican Peso.

Gold Price Outlook:

  • Spot gold is expected to extend its rally on renewed safe haven demand. The Caribbean geopolitical situation will serve as an additional boost to the global central banks’ drive to increase gold’s share in their forex reserve holdings.
  • Risk will come from the US ISM services, JOLTs and nonfarm payroll data. In addition, the CME could hike margins further to curb speculative instincts. Commodity Index rebalancing induced selling is yet another risk. Five-day Index rebalancing will begin from January 8.
  • The metal may test the resistance at $4550. Dip buying is the favoured strategy.
  • Support at $4393/$4296.Resistance is at $4472/$4550.

Silver outlook:

  • Shaky looking silver caught fresh aggressive bids on Monday on geopolitical concerns.
  • Total known global silver ETF holdings remain elevated at 863.79 MOz, highest since June 2022. Spot silver jumped over 5% on January 5.
  • At the time of writing, the grey metal was trading at $77.63, up around 7% for the day. The MCX March Silver contract at Rs 247,455 was up 4.70%.
  • One-month silver lease rate at 8.52% remains elevated and is at the highest since October 23.
  • Healthy risk appetite is also boosting silver prices.
  • Silver may test the resistance around $80/$81. A surge to $85 is not ruled out should the US Dollar soften.
  • Support is at $75/$73.36/$72.50/$70. Resistance is at $78.69/$80.72/$85.

Risks include Index rebalancing selling, margin hikes and the US data as listed above; thus, dip buying remains the preferred strategy as the metal is quite extended at the current level(Disclaimer: Recommendations and views on the stock market, other asset classes or personal finance management tips given by experts are their own. Boeing-777 stuck in city for 5yrs, turns strip store for other planes | Nagpur News

Nagpur: It has been more than a five-year wait for a Boeing-777 aircraft to take off after it landed at Nagpur for a mandatory overhaul in February 2020. If ripoffs are a common practice at your neighbourhood car workshop, this was exactly what was done with the Boeing at the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) depot at Nagpur. A spare was taken off from this aircraft to fit into another plane, hoping it would be replaced with a new one soon. And gradually it was stripped of more spares and the aircraft lay grounded at AIESL’s (Air India Engineering Services Ltd) MRO depot at Mihan-SEZ here.It all began with a quickfix idea for another Boeing-777, which landed at the same time for a phase check that has a shorter turnaround. MRO engineers took out a spare from the first Boeing, which has a call sign of VT-ALL into the other plane, said sources. And then the Boeing became a strip store for spare parts. It takes around 30 days for an MRO to complete the C check mandated for the Boeing, but here it has been stuck for half a decade.

Nagpur Headlines Today — Key Stories You Shouldn’t Miss.

It was hoped the fresh spare would be arranged soon, but calculations misfired. The plane cannot fly back until an airworthiness release certificate (ARC) is issued. The delay, which was expected not to go beyond days, continued for months and then years. Aircraft after aircraft flew away with some spare or other taken off from VT-ALL, a source said. This certainly exposes problems in inventory management. It’s not normal to pluck out a crucial spare from one aircraft and use it in another, a source said. Earlier, AIESL was part of Air India, which the Tata Group took over in 2022. Cannibalising the aircraft did not matter so far, as both AIESL and Air India were part of the same group. The overhaul gained speed after Tata Group took over. However, the rollout dates were extended at least 3 times. Earlier, it was supposed to fly in November, but it was extended till December, and then January. The work continues at the fuel tank, said sources. The AIESL management did not respond to TOI’s query. Later, an official requesting anonymity passed the buck to Air India.

MICT vs JSK, SA20 2025-26, Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings?

MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings meet in the 15th match of SA20 2025-26 at Newlands, Cape Town, with both sides desperate to steady their campaigns after mixed early returns. Newlands’ true surface and quick outfield should again favour aggressive batting, but recent form and confidence levels could create a tighter contest than the squads on paper suggest.

The Cape Town come into this game under pressure after a heavy defeat to Paarl Royals, leaving them in the lower half of the table and still searching for rhythm with ball in hand. Joburg Super Kings have blown hot and cold in the early rounds; their batting depth has produced bursts of dominance, but inconsistency and middle-overs stagnation remain concerns.

The Cape Town, with a naturally aggressive top order and home advantage, may prefer batting first to post a total in the 170–185 range that lets their big-name attack hunt with scoreboard pressure. Joburg Super Kings, who traditionally back their chasing skills and depth, might lean towards bowling first if conditions hint at any early help, trusting their experience to track a target if the pitch holds true. On balance, JSK’s slightly deeper bowling unit and better early-table positioning give them a marginal edge, but MI Cape Town’s familiarity with Newlands and top-order quality keep this fixture finely poised ahead of a crucial evening in Cape Town.

Newlands Pitch Report

Newlands in Cape Town promises a batting paradise for the SA20 clash between MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings. The pitch typically features true bounce and even pace, allowing openers to play fluent drives early on. A quick outfield amplifies scoring rates, with first-innings totals often exceeding 170-180 under lights. Seamers may extract slight new-ball movement, while spinners could find grip in the middle overs as the surface slows mildly. Dew might aid chasing later, favouring captains opting to bowl first in this high-octane T20 encounter. Expect a run-fest.

More countries face $15,000 US visa bonds requirements! Trump admin adds 7 more nations — full list here

More countries face $15,000 US visa bonds requirements! Trump admin adds 7 more nations — full list here

The United States has tightened the noose for foreign travellers looking to enter the country. The Trump administration has now widened a visa rule that requires applicants from certain countries to post a hefty financial bond, adding 7 more countries to the list. The changes, were made without a formal which were reflected in a notice on the travel.state.gov website, came into effect on January 1. With this addition, the number of countries under this regulation has risen to 13, with 11 of them being in Africa.

Trump’s H-1B Visa Chaos: Jobs At Risk, Families Traumatised As Wait Pushed To Late 2026

The newly added countries by US State Department are:

  1. Bhutan
  2. Botswana
  3. Central African Republic
  4. Guinea
  5. Guinea-Bissau
  6. Namibia
  7. Turkmenistan

These join Mauritania, Sao Tome and Principe, Tanzania, Gambia, Malawi and Zambia, which were added to the list in August and October last year. The move has raised concerns that the cost of applying for a US visa has become unaffordable for many applicants. Under the policy, visa applicants from listed countries may be asked to post a bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. US officials argue that the measure is designed to discourage visa overstays and ensure compliance with immigration rules. However, even paying the bond does not ensure that a visa will be issued. The amount is refunded if the application is rejected or once the traveller proves they have followed the terms of their visa. The bond requirement forms part of a broader tightening of US entry rules under the Trump administration. Recent measures include compulsory in-person interviews for visa applicants from all countries that require visas, along with demands for extensive disclosures of social media use and detailed records of applicants’ own travel histories and those of their family members.

Kothari is survived by wife Neeta and Sourav, both of whom have established themselves in the game, and daughter Shreya.

Jay Shah’s 2036 Olympic blueprint for India: ‘8 Medals won’t cut it’

In 1990, it was Manoj lifting the World Billiards Championship title that helped in greatly popularising cue sports in India. That he won the title as a wildcard entry at the Bengaluru event added to his legend. Manoj would soon turn pro after this success, while 35 years later, son Sourav emulated him with a professional world title in 2025. Sourav had won the title as an amateur in 2018.In 1997, Manoj won the World Doubles Billiards Championship, and while future cueists would know him as a renowned billiards coach, the foray into sports began with table tennis at a club near his ancestral house in north Kolkata. Like any young boy, curiosity drew him to other sporting facilities there and saw the billiards table for the first time. Perhaps a dark room with a conical light illuminating the table created a magical effect on the young mind and he soon started playing it.He himself once stated that “I never began playing to become a champion”. Being a mechanical engineering student from Jadavpur University, the deflection of the ball and the curving made sense to him easily.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has a ‘test’ for Sam Altman, Marc Benioff and other CEOs betting big on AI Agents: Can an agent take …

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has a 'test' for Sam Altman, Marc Benioff and other CEOs betting big on AI Agents: Can an agent take ...
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman proposes a new test for advanced AI: can an agent legally grow $100,000 into $1 million? This “Artificial Capable Intelligence” benchmark, he believes, will reveal AI’s real-world planning and decision-making prowess. While tech leaders like Sam Altman champion AI agents, some, like Andrej Karpathy, caution against current “slop” in autonomous systems.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman recently shared what he sees as a key test for the next stage of artificial intelligence (AI). As companies race to build AI agents that can act independently, Suleyman said he is watching for a milestone he calls Artificial Capable Intelligence (ACI) on the path toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). He said that the test is simple in context but difficult in execution – whether an AI agent can legally take $1,00,000 and turn it into $1 million. He described the test as “modern turing test”, suggesting it will show how AI systems can plan, reason, make decisions and operate within real-word rules. “The next big milestone I’m watching for on our way to AGI: Artificial Capable Intelligence (ACI). Can an agent take $100k and legally turn it into $1M? To me that’s the modern Turing Test,” Mustafa Suleyman wrote in a post on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter).

Microsoft CEO ‘Thrilled’ About India’s Growing Data Centre Capacity, Details Meet With PM Modi

Suleyman’s comments come as several technology leaders including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff bet heavily on AI agents as the next major shift in enterprise software. Companies such as OpenAI, Salesforce, Microsoft and others are promoting agents that can carry out tasks with limited human input, from writing code to managing business workflows.Last year, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff called the rise of AI in the workforce a “digital labor revolution,” estimating that the software company has reached about 93% accuracy with the technology. In an interview with Bloomberg then, he revealed that AI is doing up to 50% of the work at Salesforce. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted that AI could soon automate up to 40% of the tasks humans currently perform. He also claimed that AGI could arrive before 2030.

OpenAI cofounder disagrees with CEO Sam Altman on AGI timeline

Recently, OpenAI cofounder and AI researcher Andrej Karpathy pushed back against the “agentic AI” hype, characterizing the current generation of autonomous AI systems as “slop.” Karpathy has directly challenged the notion that autonomous AI agents are on the cusp of delivering as promised, positioning himself in contrast to the optimistic timelines often suggested by figures like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.“I feel like the industry is making too big of a jump and is trying to pretend like this is amazing, and it’s not. It’s slop,” Karpathy said on The Dwarkesh Podcast.“They’re not coming to terms with it, and maybe they’re trying to fundraise or something like that. We’re at this intermediate stage,” he added.

Civic wars 2026: Thackerays reunite, alliances shift — Maharashtra’s BMC power game explained | India News

Civic wars 2026: Thackerays reunite, alliances shift — Maharashtra's BMC power game explained

NEW DELHI: The stage is set for the first electoral showdown of 2026 as elections for 29 local bodies in Maharashtra are scheduled for January 15. These elections were long overdue because of legal battles.According to the Maharashtra Election Commission, polls for these corporations were held on different dates between 2015 and 2018. Elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which governs Mumbai, and 17 other major cities were last held in 2017. Five municipal corporations, including Vasai-Virar, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli, went to the polls in 2015, while four others — Dhule, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar and Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad — had elected their mayors in 2018.Interestingly, many tectonic shifts were witnessed in the run-up to the elections. While the Thackeray and Pawar families ironed out alliances, many corporators from various parties jumped ship just ahead of the polls. What is at stakeThe BMC has a budget of more than Rs 74,000 crore — larger than the GDP of many states in the country and several countries across the world.Geographically, Mumbai, along with its suburbs, Pune and Nashik do not even constitute one-fourth of Maharashtra’s total area. However, this region is significant because of its wealth and the industries it hosts. Therefore, the corporations in these areas are highly important for political parties. It is thus inevitable that these elections become testing grounds for parties and alliances. The Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are the main contenders, but regional and smaller parties are also in the fray and determined to make their presence felt at the local level of urban governance. The BJP and Shiv Sena, constituents of the Mahayuti, are contesting 137 and 90 seats, respectively. The third Mahayuti ally, the NCP, is fighting independently and has fielded 94 candidates, meaning the party will take on its state-level partners in nearly 100 seats if no nominations are withdrawn. The opposition Congress has put up 143 candidates, while its new ally, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), led by former MP Prakash Ambedkar, has fielded 42 contestants even though it was allotted 62 seats in a pre-poll pact with the national party. The Rashtriya Samaj Paksh (RSP), a Congress ally, has fielded six candidates. The Shiv Sena (UBT), led by former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, is contesting over 150 seats, the NCP (SP) 11, and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) the rest.Thackeray brothers uniteIn the upcoming elections, the Thackeray brothers – Uddhav and Raj Thackeray – have decided to join hands after 20 years and are contesting the elections on the plank of “Maratha pride”.

.

“We will make sure that Marathi people get what they want,” Raj Thackeray said while announcing the alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

.

Natural allies

  • Both Sena (UBT) and MNS are “natural allies”. They derive their political legacy from the Shiv Sena, founded by the late Bal Thackeray, which was rooted in Marathi identity. Since then, the emotive issue of Marathi pride has remained central to both parties.
  • Since launching the MNS in 2006, Raj Thackeray has leaned heavily on an anti-North India stance as his political trademark. Uddhav, meanwhile, has championed the “Marathi manoos” narrative to advance his agenda.
  • Both parties performed poorly in the Assembly elections held in 2024. Ahead of the local body elections, the issue of Marathi identity—through opposition to the imposition of Hindi—has given both parties renewed energy to ignite Marathi pride among voters.

‘Pawar’ allianceMeanwhile, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP also announced that it will contest the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune local body elections together with the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction).“For the sake of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections, the ‘clock’ and the ‘tutari’ (trumpet) have united. The parivar has come together,” deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said while announcing the alliance. The announcement, however, came with a rider — the decision has been taken only for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, and family patriarch Sharad Pawar was not involved in the decision-making process.

.

This comes two years after Ajit Pawar, along with a group of senior leaders, split from his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined hands with the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. He had raised objections to Sharad Pawar continuing to lead the party despite his age.Ajit Pawar was sworn in as deputy chief minister under the new alliance. He favoured aligning with the ruling coalition, while Sharad Pawar’s faction insisted on remaining with the opposition. The Election Commission later recognised Ajit Pawar’s faction as the legitimate NCP, retaining the ‘clock’ symbol. Sharad Pawar’s faction, NCP (SP), adopted the ‘tutari’ (curved trumpet) symbol. Both factions contested elections separately. After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where his faction faced setbacks, Ajit Pawar acknowledged that turning his back on family had been a “mistake”.In the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, Ajit Pawar’s NCP increased its tally from just six Assembly segment leads in the Lok Sabha elections to 41 MLAs, defeating the senior Pawar’s nominees in 27 head-to-head contests; the latter won seven.NCP (SP) to join NDA?During the campaign, Shiv Sena minister Sanjay Shirsat floated speculation over the possibility of the NCP (SP) joining the BJP-led NDA government. He said that local-level adjustments could be a precursor to a broader political understanding.“In the coming future, there is a possibility that Sharad Pawar could join the NDA. Did anyone believe that he would join hands with Uddhav Thackeray? But he did, and they were in power for two-and-a-half years,” Shirsat said.“He opposed Sonia Gandhi and left the Congress, and then immediately made an alliance with them. It would not be surprising if he joins the NDA. If you study politics, this has been his career pattern,” he added. Will MVA disintegrate? The coming together of the Thackeray brothers and the senior and junior Pawars signals a silent end of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) — the opposition front that Uddhav Thackeray formed with the Congress and Sharad Pawar’s NCP in 2019 to keep the BJP out of power after the assembly elections. The opposition coalition performed strongly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning 30 of the 48 seats in the state. The glory, however, was short-lived as the MVA was decimated in the Assembly elections held later in the year, collectively winning only 46 of the 288 seats. In the run-up to the local body polls, the Congress has been left out of alliances after it refused to join hands with Raj Thackeray’s MNS, given his aggressive “outsiders” pitch against north Indians. The grand old party, which had earlier asserted it would contest the January 15 polls solo on all 227 wards, has now joined hands with Prakash Ambedkar-led VBA, allocating it 62 seats.Apart from the VBA, the Congress has allocated 10 seats to the RSP and two to the Republican Party of India (Gavai faction), unsettling functionaries of the party’s city unit, leaders said. The Congress move to chart its own course in Maharashtra is a bold gambit. The party, which had a fairly strong presence in state politics till 2009, has since seen its electoral fortunes decline. In the 2024 assembly elections, the Congress won only 16 of the 101 seats it contested. Its vote share stood at 12.42% — the lowest for the party in Maharashtra, though still higher than all other players except the BJP.However, this solo fight pits the Congress directly against the BJP, which has been the undisputed winner in recent electoral contests. The move also divides the opposition space in the civic polls, giving the BJP-led Mahayuti an advantage.Who won the last local body elections? The last elections in the municipal corporations were largely dominated by the BJP and the Shiv Sena, which formed governments in 15 municipal corporations, including Mumbai and Thane. The BJP secured a majority in 13 corporations on its own, including Pune, Jalgaon, Mira-Bhayandar, Nagpur and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The Shiv Sena achieved a majority in its stronghold, Thane. In Mumbai, they ruled as partners until the tenure ended in 2022.Who dominated municipal council polls? The BJP-led Mahayuti delivered a sweeping verdict after two rounds of the first phase of Maharashtra’s civic elections, winning presidents’ posts in nearly 207 of 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The BJP emerged as the biggest gainer with victories in over 117 local bodies, while the MVA was reduced to 44 posts.

.

Despite emerging as a distant challenger statewide, the Congress checked the BJP’s advances in parts of Vidarbha. Western Maharashtra saw Mahayuti allies battling each other as the Congress and NCP (SP) struggled to hold ground.Meanwhile, the BJP made gains in Mumbai and Konkan, encroaching into traditional Shiv Sena, PWP and NCP pockets. The Shinde-led Sena expanded its footprint beyond the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), finishing second across the state.

“This decision not only brings relief to the family but also serves as a clear example of the government’s sensitivity, respect for athletes, and fair approach,” Sarang said in a statement. He added that the chief minister had assured Kranti during a felicitation ceremony — held after India’s historic World Cup triumph — that her father’s job would be restored.Calling it a humane gesture, Sarang said the move had fulfilled Kranti’s long-cherished dream. “This decision has not only provided economic and social support to the family, but has also ensured that Kranti’s father can retire with honour in a police uniform,” he said.

How important is it for athletes to receive support from their government?

For Kranti, the moment completes a journey that began on a dusty ground outside her home in Ghuwara village. Initially allowed to field only when boys were short of a player, she taught herself pace bowling by watching others play. Spotted by coach Rajiv Bilthre, her talent blossomed rapidly, culminating in an India debut in May last year and a stunning World Cup campaign where she took nine wickets, including a match-winning spell against Pakistan.
